Say Bye to Expensive Uber Rides With This Real Time Meter App

Getting an Uber home after a long night definitely beats taking the bus. But that quick ride can be slightly less relaxing when you have no idea how much the trip is going to cost you. And after word got out about that 20-minute, $362 ride one 26-year old took on Halloween, we were starting to seriously reconsider hailing a classic taxi. But now you can have the best of both worlds with Meter For Uber, an app that breaks down the cost of your Uber trip for you in real time. So long, mystery fare.

Meter For Uber, which is available for both Android and iOS users, uses city-specific pricing breakdowns and your phone’s GPS to meter rides within 5% of the total fare. When you open the app you first choose whether you’re in an Uber X, Uber XL, Uber BLACK or Uber SUV. The app then takes into account the current surge-pricing rates (if there is one), distance traveled and time lapsed in order to provide a fare estimate in real time, just like a standard taxi meter would. While Meter currently only works with Uber, the company has plans to incorporate Lyft estimates in a future version of the app.

“I felt it was important to make Meter for Uber in order to gain more transparency into Uber’s prices,” Meter For Uber creator Jonathan Osacky told The Daily Dot. “The first version took me eight hours to build and it looked awful. But I got really good feedback from a lot of people so I kept working on it.” Hey, even if it isn’t the most beautiful thing to look at, it’ll definitely help make that bank account of yours a whole lot better.
