Here’s Why You’re Probably Seeing Semicolon Tattoos Everywhere
Every single tattoo has a special meaning or story behind it. Whether the ink signifies a lifelong commitment equivalent to a ring, is representative of a friendship bracelet, highlights your pride or you know, was just the result of a drunken night out, the body art always has a tale. A trending tatt that’s full of meaning revolves around punctuation and it has one of the most impactful definitions we’ve ever heard.
The semicolon is popping up on wrists and other body parts worldwide thanks to The Semicolon Project. The non-profit, founded in March 2013 by Charlee Chandler and Matthew Wills to inspire and provide public awareness toward Mental Health, is geared toward everyone that “self-harms, is suicidal, depressed, has anxiety, is unhappy, going through a broken heart, or just lost a loved one.” After starting as a one-day event the movement has developed into a community of people sharing their stories and connecting with one another through their own personal struggles. And of course showing off those semicolons.
The popularity of these tatts — perm + temp — is obviously much more significant than sharing a love for the grammar accessory. In sentences it represents that the person writing wasn’t done with their statement and that’s exactly what this tattoo means. You are the author and the sentence is your life and your life isn’t over yet. Empowering + meaningful tatts FTW!
