WTF: This Wildly Popular New Toy Is 2016’s Furby + Tamagotchi Combo
Before kids were walking around staring at their smartphones, they were walking around staring at their Tamagotchi screens. Well, the digital pet craze that swept the world in the early aughts is back. Not that they were ever totally gone; earlier this year Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were spotted on the red carpet with matching ones. Now, thanks to advances in technology, Tamagotchis are better than ever. Meet Hatchimals.
Hatchimals ($60) bring back the idea behind Tamagotchis, only now they are 3D — you can touch them and play with them, and they will respond to you! According to CNN, these things are high tech AF. If you tap on a penguala/bearakeet/burtles/draggles/owlicorn’s egg, it will tap back. If you stroke the egg, it will light up and make sounds. Sound like another nostalgic toy you know that starts with an “F” and ends with an “urby”?

After you play with it for a little while (about half an hour) it will break the egg open with its beak and lift off the top of the egg. It really does hatch. Man, kids these days don’t even know how lucky they are.
