20 Grammys Looks That Will Be Seared into Our Memories ‘Til the End of Time
Now that Hollywood has had its say regarding current events at the SAG Awards (seriously, though, did you hear these speeches?), artists and musicians are up to bat, with the Grammy Awards set to air on February 12 at 8/7c. While we can’t say for sure how politically charged the air will be by then (though at this rate, we’ve got a pretty good idea!), the one thing we DO know for sure is that the looks coming down the red carpet are sure to garner some major attention (it IS the Grammys, after all). Take a gander at 20 of the night’s craziest looks to date below to get a handle on just HOW wild things are bound to get, but be warned: These aren’t ensembles you’ll soon be forgetting.
Olivia Newton John
Nearly 10 years after the debut of her hit film Grease, “Physical” singer Olivia Newton John was a little less Sandra Dee and a little more Tiffany-meets-Laura Ingalls Wilder. (Photo via Ron Galella Ltd./WireImage/Getty)Jennifer Lopez
As if anyone could ever forget the infamous green Versace frock J Lo donned to the 2000 Grammy Awards. Fun fact — this outfit alone more or less launched Google’s “image search.” — (Photo via Scott Gries/ImageDirect/Getty)3. Shakira: Back in 2000, Shakira gave latex lovers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera a run for their money in these red flared bottoms with sequin/diamond embellishments and an ice-skater-esque bedazzled cutout bodysuit up top. LeToya Luckett
Before Bey was breaking the internet with her pregnancy photos (and fueling rumors about her own Grammys appearance), she was just one fourth of a little known quartet named Girls Tyme (which later became Destiny’s Child), along with bandmate LeToya Luckett. Needless to say, competition must have been stiff in that group, but LeToya made sure all eyes were on her at the 2000 awards with plenty of cutouts, peekaboos and fringe. Forget Angie’s thigh: In 2011, Toni showed off the whole leg, hip and then some in a Richard Tyler gown that left little to the imagination. She reportedly told publications of the look, “I decided that before I got married and had babies, I’d wear this.” Hey, if you’ve got it, flaunt it? (Photo via S. Granitz/Getty)Sheryl Crow
Borrowing what appeared to be the overcoat from JT’s infamous denim-on-denim look (which he recently discussed) the year prior, Sheryl covered up an otherwise scandalous lace-up romper on the 2002 carpet. Bootsy Collins: Funk musician Bootsy Collins was a vision in head-to-toe cheetah print at the 2002 Grammys, throwing a few purposefully placed stars in for good measure. (Photo via Dave Hogan/Getty)
OK Go
We guess we know where Lady Gaga gets her inspo from… two full years before she showed up to the 2009 VMAs in a faceless Alexander McQueen red lace gown meant to shock the world, OK Go members donned their own suit versions on the Grammys carpet. MIA
In all fairness, singer/rapper MIA WAS pregnant for the 2009 Grammys when she rocked this, erm, interesting Manish Arora frock, but it didn’t make it any less confusing. 12. Hayley Williams: It’s not exactly a gown and it’s not exactly streetwear, but somehow, whatever it is seems to work for Paramore’s leading lady. Maybe it’s the edgy red ‘do? (Photo via Jon Kopaloff/Getty)
13. Nicki Minaj: Taking a cue from Bootsy, Nicki went wild at the 2011 Grammys, throwing in a hair-raising bride of Frankenstein ‘do for good measure. (Photo via Jon Kopaloff/Getty)
14. Lady Gaga: By 2011, Lady Gaga didn’t even bother to walk the red carpet, choosing to be carried down it instead — and in a see-through green egg-shaped pod, no less! (Photo via C. Flanigan/Getty)
Nicki Minaj
Remember when Nicki Minaj showed up to the Grammys in angry priest garb? (Hey, someone had to dethrone Gaga as the most outlandish of them all after the egg pod showing, areweright?) (Photo via Steve Granitz/Getty)16. Rihanna: Jean Paul Gaultier was responsible for this uber-risqué white and sheer number Rihanna rocked back in 2011. Riri pulled it off as only she could (though TBH, we don’t know HOW girl maneuvered in this without pulling a Janet Jackson at the Superbowl… or worse). (Photo via Jon Kopaloff/Getty)
17. Jacqueline Van Bierk: If you didn’t know Jacqueline Van Bierk’s name before, we bet you were Googling it after seeing… well, this on last year’s red carpet! (Photo via John Shearer/Getty)
18. Lady Gaga: As if Gaga needed any excuse to wear something totally unconventional on the red carpet, last year’s David Bowie tribute proved all the ammo she needed to rock this custom Marc Jacobs ode to Ziggy Stardust. (Photo via Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty)
19. Dencia: If newcomer Dencia’s aim was to get herself noticed at the 2016 Grammy Awards, girl can check one off the list as mission accomplished. It was impossible NOT to stare at the Pepto-Bismol pink jumpsuit the singer showed up in, complete with Hello Kitty leg embellishments. (Photo via Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty)
