Celebrity throwback photos offer a sort of hybrid of the two reactions: Obviously none of us were young Susan Sarandon (unless Susan is reading this!), but many of us grew up watching her in movies, so memories of our earlier lives can be tied up in past images of her, or any other star.

Today a boy (now man) I loved (still do, tons, just in a different way) sent me this photo. Age 22. Morning time. Feeling that uniquely 22 combo of pretty fucking pleased with myself and full scale self-hatred. But what I remembered most keenly was how totally unaware I was of the world around me. Whether I was in Brooklyn or Poland or Ecuador, the realities of people I did not know, who were not me, were not real to me. They were characters in a play. For me, it honestly took becoming a public person and being held accountable by viewers and readers to really understand and begin to engage in an intersectional (and therefore whole) approach to life and work. That was my particular path and I am very grateful, especially to every single person who took the time to educate me (even when it felt "bad.") Now I feel that the ONLY use for fame is to spread messages with meaning, and right now the most urgent thing I can think to say is that our country needs to talk about, and change our entire ingrained approach to, race. What gets me excited is how loudly the 22 year olds (and 12 year olds) I meet are speaking. They understand. They are ready. They aren't going to walk oblivious through the world like this little lady did.
