How to Accessorize With Every Length of Necklace

Finding the ideal staple necklace can be challenging enough without factoring in *how* to wear it. To make it easier, we compiled a guide to the most common styles of necklaces, how to wear each one, and what (if any) other accessories to pair with it. Collar: This style measures 14 inches, fits tightly around the neck, and goes best with crew necks and v-necks. Try rocking a collar necklace with your favorite leather jacket.

Choker: Measuring approximately 16 inches, the choker sits tightly against the base of the neck and should be worn with v-necks and round necks. “This length can really be worn easily from day to night," says Emily Goldstein, designer of celeb favorite jewelry line EF Collection. "Wear with a tee and jeans [and then change into] a cocktail dress.”

Princess: This 18-inch style rests gently on the collarbone so particularly pops when worn with a v-neck cut. “I find that this length is great for everyday [wear],” says Goldstein “It looks awesome layered with shorter necklaces.”

Matinée: Falling anywhere between the collarbone and the bust, this 20-inch necklace should be worn with a round or crew neck cut top to avoid neckline competition.

Opera: Dropping as low as the bust or below, this 24-inch length pairs well with a plunging v-neck. Goldstein loves this combo because "the necklace length complements the neckline and [it] almost looks like they were made for one another!”

Rope: Falling below the bust and beyond, this length generally ranges between 30 and 34 inches. According to Goldstein, this style is perfect for formal evening attire, but you could also dress it down by wearing it with a round neck tee, casual denim, and other necklace layers.
