Why Aerie’s New Body Positive Campaign Is a Total Game Changer
When it comes to taking a stance against airbrushing, American Eagle’s lingerie and apparel brand Aerie is proving to be a prime example of how to do it right. Last year they released a totally photoshop-free ad campaign with Emma Roberts as part of their ongoing “Aerie Real” campaign. Now, following in Emma’s footsteps, the new ads feature Barbie Ferreira, a stunning 19-year-old model from New York.
The size 12 model who has dubbed herself a “curve model” as well as the “Queen of In-Between” is a refreshing take on the Victoria’s Secret sorts of bods that send to dominate this space. In a video ad accompanying the image Barbie shared on her Instagram, she tells the camera, “Not being retouched in the images is something that’s really important to me… Knowing that that’s what I look like without anyone’s perception of what my body needs to look like.”
While #aeriereal has certainly been a commendable initiative since its launch in 2014, it’s refreshing to see the brand feature a model rocking a different silhouette than the four other slim models highlighted in the current campaign. It’s easy enough to forgo photoshop on an itty bitty celeb or a sample size model, but seeing a woman who’s actually the size of most women in America flaunt her bod unapologetically has so much power to make other women feel empowered to do the same.
