10 Easy Food Swaps That Will Give You More Energy

Do you grab a green juice or superfood snack after working out because it’s trendy or has become a healthy habit? Chances are, you already know what you eat has a massive impact on your energy levels, even if you’re not an expert on the science of why. Neka Pasquale, founder of Bay Area-based healthy food chain Urban Remedy, reminds us that food can and should be used as fuel to power us up each day. “When we eat foods that promote inflammation, our bodies are taxed to the point of fatigue. This is what causes you to feel tired, sluggish, or bloated — it might even be the reason why you feel like you need a big cup of coffee or caffeine boost to get through the day.”

According to Pasquale, who has seen major success with her company by helping people eat and live healthier, chowing down on smaller, plant-based, organic meals is a surefire way to give yourself a boost. Wonder why? These foods are filled with phytochemicals and support vibrant health and higher energy levels. “I believe that a better way to eat for energy is to enjoy plant-based foods that are as close to their natural state as possible,” she explains. “Some of my favorites sources include organic fruits and nuts; superfoods like cacao, hemp, goji berries, and chia; and healthy fats and powerful spices like coconut oil, turmeric, garlic, and ginger.” Pasquale also says to make it a point to reach for vibrant-colored veggies — they’re chock full of powerful antioxidants.

Now that you know which foods belong in your shopping cart and on the table, what should you avoid? Pasquale cautions against sugar and processed foods. “Cut foods that contain the whites (white flour, sugar, potatoes), high-fructose corn syrup, and omega-6 oils (soybean, corn, and sunflower oils). Do your best to ditch foods with preservatives, GMOs, processed meats, and sugar-rich drinks, such as soda or highly sweetened coffee drinks,” she advises. You probably already know you feel crappy when you eat them, but did you know that these types of foods can cause free radical damage and stress on your entire nervous system? “Eating low-glycemic foods will clear your mind and help brain function, which will ultimately benefit all aspects of your day,” Pasquale promises.

Before you beat yourself up for unhealthy food choices you might’ve made recently, Pasquale says to remember that we’ve all been there. “You can break the cycle by making small strides to stick with a balanced diet that includes fat, protein, and fiber. This kind of eating will ensure you have a constant and even flow of energy throughout the day.” Not sure where to start? Here are Pasquale’s top 10 recommended food swaps:

1. Go for green tea instead of a sugary coffee drink. “Green tea is filled with antioxidants, balances blood sugar, and gives you a nice caffeine boost; coffee drinks are high in calories and sugar, so they give you a quick buzz with a big crash.” We’ll take the tea, thank you.

2. Instead of popcorn, choose a handful of organic nuts. “Popcorn is high on the glycemic index and raises blood sugar levels. Almonds, on the other hand, contain healthy fats, which make you feel satiated and balance blood sugar levels for sustained energy.”

3. Swap fruit juice for green juice. “Fruit juice can raise blood sugar levels, while fruit-free green juice will boost your energy without all the sugar. Even more, it has cleansing properties.”

4. Instead of a donut or muffin, treat yourself to avocado toast. “Donuts and muffins are made with refined white flour, which raises blood sugar levels and is usually devoid of nutrients. Avocado toast contains healthy fats, which will keep you feeling full.”

5. Sub zoodles or spaghetti squash for noodles. “Zucchini noodles are very low in calories and carbs, while traditional pasta is high in carbs — this can promote weight gain and bloat when you don’t need the extra energy.”

6. Enjoy plain yogurt with fresh berries instead of sugary yogurts. “A plant-based yogurt with fresh fruit contains healthy fats. Add fresh berries for antioxidants and fiber, which will keep blood sugar balanced.” Think yogurt is just for breakfast? Reconsider it as an afternoon power snack. Yum!

7. Load up on cauliflower, rather than potatoes. “Mashed potatoes are full of carbs and raise blood sugar levels in the body, while cauliflower is super low in carbs and creates a rich, creamy version that still satisfies.” Cauliflower pizza, anyone?

8. Order a veggie burger instead of beef or bison. “Veggie burgers are better for the planet and good for your waistline.”

Despite the fact that paparazzi love to see (and often follow) celebrity couples, Freddie just revealed how he and Sarah have been able to keep things low-key. When Oldish's podcast co-host Randy Spelling asked how they stay out of the public — and how intentional they have to be to keep a low profile — Freddie said it's "by choice," and that "you can control it to a certain degree."

"I don't know how deliberate [others] are in trying to avoid that BS," he said on the podcast. "I know how easy it's been for us because I don't go anywhere. I don't go to parties. People don't see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places. We have our restaurants that we like, and they're not super trendy in places where paparazzi hang out. So we're good at avoiding it."

Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.


Why Your Flexibility Stalls

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! Following our beloved Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Dan and Amy Sherman-Palladino's next series is Étoile, which is set at two world-famous ballet companies in New York City and Paris. When both companies run into some trouble, the decide to swap their most talented stars in a last-ditch effort to save themselves.

And based on the first set leaks from New York City, it looks like Étoile will definitely be packing on the drama. This short clip shows Luke Kirby standing outside Lincoln Center in a serious conversation (probably about the fate of his ballet company, TBH).

"Well, guess that plan for early retirement will have to wait," Dan and Amy said in a joint statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). "Instead, we’ve decided to embark on an international journey with an unbelievable group of players and the most talented ballet dancers in the world. We will sleep when we’re dead."

But this isn't the first time ASP has forayed into the world of ballet! Her ABC Family series Bunheads (which premiered on June 11, 2012) follows Michelle (Sutton Foster) who moves to her hometown of Paradise and starts working at her mother-in-law's dance studio The Paradise Dance Academy. The best part is that the role of Michelle's mother-in-law is played by Emily Gilmore herself, Kelly Bishop!

Who's in the Étoile cast?

So far, we know that Étoile will star Luke Kirby, Gideon Glick, Camille Cottin, Simon Callow, Lou de Laâge, and David Alvarez. Yanic Truesdale, who played our favorite Gilmore Girls concierge Michel, has also joined the series as a recurring character! I'm so excited to see Yanic working with Amy Sherman-Palladino again — it's like a Gilmore Girls reunion!

What does Étoile mean?

Étoile translates to "star," and there are so many different connections here! We have the ballet stars themselves, but you also wish upon a star and reach for the stars when you're working towards a dream. If you ask me, Étoile is the perfect name for this series.

How many episodes does Étoile have?

The first season of Étoile will have eight episodes total, but considering Prime Video ordered two seasons, we'll definitely be getting more episodes.

The speculated lineup is honestly wild. Starbucks teased that the holiday menu will hit stores on November 7.

Per rumors around the Starbucks holiday menu, the Eggnog Latte, Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, Irish Cream Cold Brew, and Gingerbread Loaf won't be returning to cafes for 2024. We're especially sad to see the Toasted White Chocolate Mocha not included, though the official menu lineup has yet to be released!

When is Starbucks Red Cup Day 2024?

Though there's no official word out about Red Cup Day for 2024, our best guess – based on the Red Cup Days of years past – is it'll return mid-November. In 2023, Red Cup Day fell on November 16. In 2022, the coffee chain held the event on November 17. Both dates landed on the third Thursday of November, so we predict it to hit on November 21 for 2024. Red Cup Day is when Starbucks customers can get a free reusable red cup when they order a seasonal drink off the holiday menu.
