12 Names You Won’t Believe Are Hot Again

Most of the vintage names that have gained in popularity this year have obvious charms — Tobias, Clementine, sweet Adeline, Matilda and spunky Mabel — that might elicit coos from admiring older relatives. But there are others on the rise that feel more mid-century than antique, and which could completely shock your mother-in-law or Gran, who still associate them with their own in-laws or Grans. Scroll on for creative baby names that are making a fierce comeback.

1. Harold: In style limbo for decades, this name is inching back into favor, no doubt helped by its friendlier nicknames Harry and Hal — or even more by the fact that it’s the full name of One Direction’s Harry Styles. Harold “Happy” Hogan is Tony Stark’s bodyguard in Iron Man. In his former life, Harold ranked as high as Number 12 in 1917.

2. Aileen: This Irish variation of Helen rose almost 50 places this year, continuing an upward trend since 2012, and sister name Eileen is on the upswing as well. Could it be from the Aileen Morgan character on Homeland, or memories of the adorable film actress Annie of 1982, Aileen Quinn? Or a growing love for the een/ine sound?

3. Allan: Allan, one of the three spellings of this name, had a big bounce this year, up 65 places — something of a surprising resurgence, though still nowhere near its peak of #115 in 1940. Two recent bearers were the Allan Shore character played by James Spader on Boston Legal and Allan Hyde on High School Musical. The Allen spelling also saw a slight uptick.

4. Lucille: Perhaps it’s not so surprising, what with Lucy, Luke, Lucas and Luca so red hot, that Lucille is joining their club. A French name that has long lost its accent and once seemed to be the exclusive property of Lucille Ball, it has regained its appeal to baby namers, climbing 59 places last year, into the Top 300. Maya Rudolph has a daughter named Lucille, and it’s been celebrated in many songs.

5. Gerald: Gerald, nn Jerry, was such a ubiquitous Gerald Ford-and-earlier-era dad name for so long that seeing it suddenly rise up 50 places comes as a surprise. It was a Top 20 name in the 1930s, and though it’s recorded in history as presidential, Gerald Ford was actually born Leslie.

6. Ann: Though Ann has lost her position as a prime all-purpose, go-to middle name, as she was for much of the 20th century, she’s started to be used more as a first name again. Most of the more memorable bearers of the name, however — from Anne Boleyn to Anne Bronte, Anne Frank, Anne Hathaway and Anne of Green Gables — wear the e-ending spelling.

7. Robin: Guess what! American boys have reclaimed the name Robin this year — it’s up 76 places, to bring it into the Top 1000, possibly thanks to Robin Thicke, the memory of Robin Williams and maybe even to Batman’s sidekick. Robin is still well used for boys in England and is number 21 in Switzerland and 53 in France.

8. Myra: Myra, a 17th century poetic invention that was popular here at the turn of the last century, lost much of its luster over the years. Its most famous bearers include a great British pianist, a notorious British criminal and Gore Vidal’s ahead-of-its time Myra Breckinridge. Myra is now regaining some of its sheen, up almost 400 places since 2010.

9. Wayne: Surf’s up! Wayne is one of several old beach boys — along with Craig and Dean — that made it back onto their boards this year. Wayne increased 41 spots, still an impossibly long way to go before it reaches its 1941 high of #37. Wayne Gretzky and Wayne Rooney are inspirational sports heroes. And Wayne Newton is a perpetual Vegas mainstay.

10. Paula: It’s 1963 and the catchy “Hey Paula” sung by Paul and Paula is playing non-stop on the transistor radio. Flash forward to 2016, and the name Paula joins Pauline and Paulina as names on the rise, climbing over 100 places last year, represented in today’s entertainment world by Paula Abdul and Paula Patton.

11. Vaughn: V names for girls — Violet, Vivienne, Vera — have made a strong comeback, and are now joined by the smooth, sophisticated Welsh boy Vaughn, maybe as a rhyming replacement for Sean. It’s still more familiar as a surname, as in Vince and Sarah (Vaughan).

12. Zelda: Zelda is one of the fastest rising girls’ names of the year — a fact that may seem strange to your Great-Aunt Alma, who’s probably not familiar with computer/video game culture, and still dates the name back to Jazz Age Zelda Fitzgerald.

Oscar-winner, Michelle Yeoh just opened up to BBC Radio about her struggles with infertility amid her decades-long career. Fertility and motherhood are obviously complex, emotional topics — we've seen plenty of discourse play out in this space the last few months alone — so when Michelle described her inability to conceive as "a failure," our collective hearts broke for her.

Here's what the Wicked star had to say about why she felt like "a failure" — and the unexpected relationship that "blessed" her.

cdn.ex.co

On BBC Radio's Woman's Hourpodcast, Michelle shared her story of infertility — both how it hurt her, but also how she was able to come to terms with it over time. In discussing what she calls a "shattered mirror moment," Michelle explained that her lack of children wasn't for "lack of trying." She said that she loves children, babies, and even has six godchildren, but she simply wasn't able to bear a biological child.

"I believe that it's a woman's choice — it's your choice whether you want to have children, and shouldn't be imposed on you. Just because you're a woman, you should have a child — that should not be the case," she said. "But as a very personal thing, I wanted — I always wanted to have children."

She elaborated that in her first marriage with Sir Dickson Poon, it was a "very clear path about having children." When she couldn't conceive, she went to get fertility treatment "to aid in the process" — and she made it clear that the process was a very painful one for her. When describing her attempts at conception, she said, "And I think the worst moment to go through is every month you feel like such a failure."

"And then you go, why? And I think at some point you stop blaming yourself. I go, there are certain things in your body that doesn't function in a certain way. That's how it is," she continued. "You just have to let go and move on. And I think you come to a point where you have to stop blaming you."

While she may have practically moved on from her dream of carrying biological children — of that, she said, "I'm 62. Of course I'm not going to have a baby right now," — Michelle can't seem to help thinking of it still. She said, "Sometimes, honestly, I still think about it."

Getting to this place of peace and understanding for her fertility scenario came with a series of heartbreaks, though, as Michelle explained this likely ended her first marriage. Although she believed they loved each other, she knew in the next decade of the relationship, she ultimately couldn't give her ex-husband the family that he wanted. Now, she feels like it was "very brave" for the former couple "to admit" that they shouldn't "drag this out."

Thankfully, the end of her marriage didn't mar the love shared there — Michelle said she's actually godmother to Sir Dickson Poon's eldest child. And she even got remarried! Though her new husband, Jean Todt, proposed the very first month they were together, Michelle waited to marry until about 20 years later.

As mentioned before, Michelle is surrounded by plenty of beautiful children in her life — one of which is her granddaughter via her stepson, Nicholas Todt. In regards to that, Michelle noted, "Then you feel you're still very, very blessed because you do have a baby in your life.”

And as for having a little one in her life outside of children? Let's just say she has a golden boy of her own — and yes, I'm referring to the Oscar she won in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Needless to say, Michelle is definitely not a failure. 🙌

The biggest baby name trends of 2019 include names from new sources around the world and in nature, trends reflecting modern spirituality and nonbinary ideals, an F and a U, and a goodbye to a longtime favorite group. Here are Nameberry’s predictions for the 12 leading trends shaping baby names in 2019, along with name examples for each trend.

1. Biggest Big Picture Trend – Global Names: As the world gets smaller, the pool of names becomes larger, with new names from ever-more-diverse origins entering the global lexicon. At Nameberry we’ve added thousands of new names from around the world: Maori names and Xhosa names, ancient Greek names and South American Indian names, Korean names and Israeli names. With the appetite for meaningful and unique names expanding all the time, parents are looking for original choices with deep roots.

Example names: Acacius, Aroha, Cyrene, Jedda, Kiran, Lautaro, Lior, Niabi, Sena, Walken

2. Newest Gender Bend – Nonbinary Names: Parents who want to raise their children free of gender stereotypes are looking for names that are truly gender neutral. That means no names that end in son like Madison and no names that were originally boy or girl names that have migrated to the other side, such as Charlie. And if the names also embody a gender-free ideal such as Justice, all the better.

Example names: Briar, Campbell, Finley, Journey, Justice, Laken, Revel, Robin, Royal, Story

3. Hottest Direction in Baby Naming – East: Names related to Eastern religions and non-European mythology have taken over from biblical names and saints’ names as spiritual favorites. The mainstreaming of yoga, meditation, and non-traditional spiritualism underpins the trend, along with a search for meaning that transcends the name’s surface qualities such as style and sound.

Example names: Asherah, Bodhi, Kali, Lakshmi, Manu, Osiris, Raiden, Rama, Tanith, Zen

4. Coolest New Color Names – Muted Hues: All color names for babies are, well, colorful, but we’re beginning to see a shift in tone as vibrant shades like Scarlett and Ruby and Poppy are giving way to softer pastels. Grey/Gray is starting to replace Blue as a first and middle color name du jour, while popular Violet has been joined by other vintage pale purplish hues. Another prediction: More Crayola names for boys.

Example names: Ash, Fawn, Grey/Gray, Ivory, Lavender, Lilac, Mauve, Moss, Olive, Sage

5. Richest New Nature Names – Rare Gems: For a long time, the most popular jewel names have been those usually assigned to girls — Ruby, Pearl, Amber — all of which came into favor at the turn of the last century, along with flower and other nature names. But one of the most interesting new areas to be mined is the more unusual gem names which can be not only for girls but also for boys (or sometimes both).

Example names: Amethyst, Emerald, Garnet, Jasper, Jet, Onyx, Opal, Peridot, Sapphire, Topaz

6. Latest Vintage Trend – Old-School Nickname Names for Boys: We’re seeing charming vintage boy nickname names like Archie and Alfie and Freddie beginning to join their sisters Millie and Maisie and Josie, but more surprising to us is the nascent revival of early 20th-century faves like Johnny and Jimmy and Billy on birth certificates, names which once were confined to comic strips and old radio and TV shows. Even more startling is the reappearance of some generic/badass appellations now appealing to the hipster sensibilities of celebs and others.

Example names: Ace, Billy, Buddy, Buster, Hank, Ike, Jimmy, Johnny, Sonny, Spike

7. Most Fashionable Consonant – F: For a letter that had been sitting quietly in the shadows for decades, F has suddenly rocketed forward, particularly for boys, and particularly for boys’ names of Irish descent. And then there’s the whole Family Fran, which started to take off after the election to the papacy of Pope Francis and led to the revival of several surprising half-forgotten Fran names. Fashion-forward names starting with F include the following.

Example names: Faye, Felix, Fern, Finnian, Flora, Florian, Frances, Frankie, Frederick, Frost

8. Coolest Vowel – U: U finally gets its turn in the spotlight this year. As a first initial, U is the least-used letter of the alphabet, and it hasn’t featured in any major baby name trends in… forever. But now u — and its “oo” sound — features in many newly stylish names. Is it the influence of little Prince Louis? His unexpected name may have simply upshifted the trend to major.

Example names: Eulalie, Hugo, Jude, Juniper, Louise, Luca, Luna, Reuben, Tallulah, True

9. Trendiest Name Length – Three Letters: Four letters might be a marker of name popularity, a la Number 1 Emma and Liam, but minimalist three-letter names are the sleek, sweet names of the future.

Example names: Hal, Ida, Jem, Kit, Koa, Liv, Lux, Rex, Rio, Van

10. Wildest Middle Name Trend – Animalia: Parents who want to add a touch of fierceness or individuality to more conventional first name choices are turning to the animal kingdom for the wild vibe. As in many other trends, celebs have led the way, starting with Mariel Hemingway’s daughter Langley Fox back in 1989 to the number of more recent starbabies bearing Bear as their middle name.

Example names: Bear, Falcon, Fox, Hawk, Koala, Lion, Lynx, Otter, Tiger, Wolf

11. Trendiest Trend-Related Trend – Celebrity Surname-Names: Celebrities have influenced baby names since the days of Shirley Temple, and surname-names such as Morgan and Carter have been rising since the conservative 1980s. Now those two trends have combined into one megatrend: Celebrity surnames for baby girls and boys. Goodbye, Shirley; hello, Temple.

Example names: Beckham, Bowie, Ellington, Hendrix, Jolie, Ledger, Lennon, Lennox, Monroe, Wilder

12. Trend Ready to Jump the Shark – Em- Names: We predict that baby namers are about to become all Emmed-out when it comes to baby names in 2019. After all, we had Emily in the Top 25 for 35 years, at #1 for 12 of them. Then came Emma, in the Top 25 since 1998, and still reigning in first place. A number of dueling Em- names followed in their wake, and we predict that the consensus is about to be that enough Em is enough.

Example names: Ember, Emerson, Emery, Emilia, Emily, Emma, Emme, Emmeline, Emmett, Emmy
