13 Short + Sweet Baby Names

Mini names are having a moment. Mia and Ava rank in the US girls’ Top Ten, and baby names like Max, Leo, Ian and Eli are all popular for boys. It’s a minimalist approach to naming children, and a stylish one too. So which little creative baby names are the next big thing? Scroll on for the rising stars of this category, in three letters or less.

1. Ivy: This name is as botanical as Violet, and every bit as vintage too. Poison ivy might give some parents pause, but now the name is more associated with Beyoncé’s Blue Ivy. At Number 129, Ivy is more popular than ever. Ivy is also associated with the number four, via the Roman numeral IV.

2. Ada: Ada is close to glamorous Ava, but has a different vibe. Pioneering mathematician Ada Lovelace is a worthy namesake, and the name is a cousin to the very popular Adeline/Adelaide names, too. Ada currently ranks Number 357, but was a Top 100 choice around the year 1900.

3. Mae: Sweet and simple, this name brings to mind springtime. Sometimes short for Mary or Margaret, it’s also spelled May — as in the merry month. Screen legend Mae West was born Mary Jane. Today, Mae stands at Number 589, a rise of nearly 400 places since 2010.

4. Liv: Liv owes something to the popularity of Olivia, but it’s more than a nickname. It’s also a Scandi staple with Old Norse roots. In modern Scandinavian languages, Liv means life. Unheard in the US until the last few years, it currently stands at Number 720. Another imported mini name possibility? Luz, the Spanish word for light.

5. Noa: Old Testament Noah is the top name for boys in the US. Noa isn’t just a feminine form of the popular pick — it’s a feminine name in the Bible, used for a daughter of Zelophehad. A long-time number one name in Israel, Noa is now up to Number 762 in the US.

6. Ann: Anna is Frozen, Ana is español, and Anne is Green Gables. Three-letter Ann is as traditional and spare as Claire or Jane, but even shorter. As of 2015, Ann is the least popular of the Ann- names, but is gaining in use, up to number 893. Fellow mini Ana is also on the rise, while the longer Anne and Anna have slipped.

7. Asa: If you’re crushed that Ezra and Asher are so popular, this name of an Old Testament king could be for you. It’s more traditional than Ace, but less expected than Eli. Asa currently stands at Number 531.

8. Ari: A-i mini names Ali and Avi rank too, but Ari is a particularly appealing choice. With separate roots in Hebrew and Norse, Ari could mean lion or eagle. It’s also short for any Ari- name. Entourage’s Ari Gold made the name widely familiar, and it is now up to number 402 — a new high.

9 + 10. Max and Dax: Max, of Where the Wild Things Are fame, has been huge. Jax followed Max, and now it is Dax’s turn. We first met Dax as a character in The Adventurers, a 1970s bestseller by Harold Robbins. That’s how actor Dax Shepard got his name. Dax currently ranks number 549.

11. Bo: If three letters make a cool mini name, is just two letters the coolest of them all? In the late 1970s, Bo was part-Bo Derek, part-Dukes of Hazzard. Now it’s more popular than ever at number 616. The only other two-letter name to rank is another mini name for boys: Ty.

12. Sam: Minimalist baby namers with an eye to tradition can skip Samuel, Joseph and Benjamin, and name their sons just Sam, Joe and Ben. Jon also ranks in the US Top 1000, but other options, like Tom, Dan, Cal, Gus, Ike, Rob and Ned remain rare. Sam is at number 554.

13. Rex + Rey: Boy names that rule, like King and Messiah, are on the rise. Factor in the mini names trend, and it’s no surprise we’re meeting boys called Rex, the Latin word for king, and Rey, the Spanish equivalent. Rey is also the name of the (female) hero from the new Star Wars series.

Unique baby names are hard to come by these days, but parents looking to stand out from the Emmas and Jacks are looking for inspo everywhere resulting in some truly original and sometimes crazy names. In fact, you probably don't know anyone with these trending names of 2020 but that may soon change.

Soon you may see Falcon and Williston on friends' birth announcements or maybe your own? (This one from Minted is super sweet.)

We browsed through Nameberry's most unusual baby names for boys and girls and here are 16 rare, exotic - dare we say crazy? - baby names that are among the hottest so far for 2020.

Hanan, up 1000 Percent: Think of Hanan, which means graciousness, as the modern version of Hannah. It's up a whopping 1000 percent in July 2020.

Williston, up 1000 Percent: Not just an oil town in North Dakota, this fresh take on William is taking the maternity ward by storm. Willis (as in) is also up there with a 36 percent rise in July.

Flavio, up 702 Percent: This Latin name for "yellow" or "blond" is gracing birth certificates of blondie babes across the U.S.

Massey, up 603 Percent: This unisex name is on the rise for girls and boys. You could also mix it up with variants like Massie, Masey, and Masie.

Messiah, up 301 Percent: This bold name is trending for girls and means "expected savior or deliverer." Basketball star Allen Iverson likely started the trend with his little one.

Rosaria, up 218 Percent: The Spanish name for "rosary" is trending hard and we like it for a twist on the classic Rose.

Cricket, up 168 Percent: This unisex name is becoming hugely popular for boys. We like it for babes with summer birthdays!

Callen, up 90 Percent: This unisex Gaelic name is trending for girls and means "rock." Yay for strong girl names!

Bruin, up 90 Percent: Whether you're a sports or nature fan this name could be for you. Of English/Dutch origin, the name means "bear or brown." Bear as a boy's name is also up, thanks to celeb moms Alicia Silverstone and Kate Winslet, who both have Bear cubs.

Sabien, up 87 Percent: Move over Damien, there's a new baby name in town. You can also go for the French variation Sabin for a tres chic twist.

Falcon, up 81 Percent: Give your bird a cool name like Falcon and who knows how far she'll soar. Eagle is also up (61 percent) for boys and girls.

Rani, up 81 Percent: For boys, Rani means "my song, my joy" and for girls it means "queen, she is singing." Cute for your little dancing queen!

Lyrical, up 81 Percent: More than 1,000 girls and boys are named "Lyric" each year in the U.S., but this longer musical number is topping the charts this month.

Bas, up 76 Percent: Consistently in the top 10 in the Netherlands, this cool twist on Sebastian is trending for boys in the U.S.

Gem, up 66 Percent: Meaning "precious stone," this shorter version of Gemma is looking strong for short and sweet baby names.

Rorke, up 66 Percent: Meaning "illustrious and mighty" this Irish name is having a 2020 moment and we're loving it.

The holidays are the perfect time for all kinds of surprises, and Gilmore Girls fans are convinced two of the show's stars are giving us a present tomorrow, December 3. When both Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) and Scott Patterson (Luke Danes) posted from Stars Hollow, fans picked up on the connection faster than you can say "coffee coffee coffee!" And all signs point to a very special Gilmore Girls cast reunion.

Here's everything we know about Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson's Gilmore Girls surprise.

  • Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson starred as Lorelai and Luke on Gilmore Girls from 2000 to 2007.
  • The show is known for its obsession with coffee, and Lauren, Scott, and Sean Gunn teased a special announcement coming December 3, 2024.
  • Fans think it could be a reunion between the actors (and their characters).

Lauren Graham/Instagram

Lauren posted this shot of Luke's Diner in a snowy Stars Hollow, teasing she's "got something brewing" that she'd announce on December 3. And when Scott made an almost-identical post that he was "back at #LukesDiner for something really special," fans flooded his comments with everything from "KING LUKE WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?" to "I’m ready for whatever this is ☕️ 😍."

And on November 26, another member of the Gilmore Girls family teased the collab too: Sean Gunn. "Kirkʼs 63rd job? Find out on 12/3 📦☕," he said on Instagram. And in the words of one fan in his comments: "WHAT is going on."

Considering all three actors tagged Walmart in their post, I was expecting a Luke's Coffee x Scotty P's Big Mug Coffee collab, but it looks like it could be something even better: a reunion!

"I think this has already accidentally aired on Hulu, Lauren and Scott are in a commercial as Luke and Lorelai, where she says 'coffee coffee coffee!' and he pulls out a Walmart shipping box full of brew lol!" one Reddit user says. "I was very surprised when I saw it but it was cute!"

This totally make sense in my headcanon of Gilmore Girls in 2024. Because you can't tell me Lorelai wouldn't totally be obsessed with grocery delivery. Paying someone else to do a chore for her AND avoiding Taylor Doose at the market? Well that's a win-win baby.

Here's hoping we see Alexis Bledel as Rory again too!

What do you think about this potential Gilmore Girls reunion? Tune in December 3 to find out what this is all about and read up on 24 Cozy Gilmore Girls Gift Ideas For Anyone Who'd Rather Be In Stars Hollow.

The biggest baby name trends of 2019 include names from new sources around the world and in nature, trends reflecting modern spirituality and nonbinary ideals, an F and a U, and a goodbye to a longtime favorite group. Here are Nameberry’s predictions for the 12 leading trends shaping baby names in 2019, along with name examples for each trend.

1. Biggest Big Picture Trend – Global Names: As the world gets smaller, the pool of names becomes larger, with new names from ever-more-diverse origins entering the global lexicon. At Nameberry we’ve added thousands of new names from around the world: Maori names and Xhosa names, ancient Greek names and South American Indian names, Korean names and Israeli names. With the appetite for meaningful and unique names expanding all the time, parents are looking for original choices with deep roots.

Example names: Acacius, Aroha, Cyrene, Jedda, Kiran, Lautaro, Lior, Niabi, Sena, Walken

2. Newest Gender Bend – Nonbinary Names: Parents who want to raise their children free of gender stereotypes are looking for names that are truly gender neutral. That means no names that end in son like Madison and no names that were originally boy or girl names that have migrated to the other side, such as Charlie. And if the names also embody a gender-free ideal such as Justice, all the better.

Example names: Briar, Campbell, Finley, Journey, Justice, Laken, Revel, Robin, Royal, Story

3. Hottest Direction in Baby Naming – East: Names related to Eastern religions and non-European mythology have taken over from biblical names and saints’ names as spiritual favorites. The mainstreaming of yoga, meditation, and non-traditional spiritualism underpins the trend, along with a search for meaning that transcends the name’s surface qualities such as style and sound.

Example names: Asherah, Bodhi, Kali, Lakshmi, Manu, Osiris, Raiden, Rama, Tanith, Zen

4. Coolest New Color Names – Muted Hues: All color names for babies are, well, colorful, but we’re beginning to see a shift in tone as vibrant shades like Scarlett and Ruby and Poppy are giving way to softer pastels. Grey/Gray is starting to replace Blue as a first and middle color name du jour, while popular Violet has been joined by other vintage pale purplish hues. Another prediction: More Crayola names for boys.

Example names: Ash, Fawn, Grey/Gray, Ivory, Lavender, Lilac, Mauve, Moss, Olive, Sage

5. Richest New Nature Names – Rare Gems: For a long time, the most popular jewel names have been those usually assigned to girls — Ruby, Pearl, Amber — all of which came into favor at the turn of the last century, along with flower and other nature names. But one of the most interesting new areas to be mined is the more unusual gem names which can be not only for girls but also for boys (or sometimes both).

Example names: Amethyst, Emerald, Garnet, Jasper, Jet, Onyx, Opal, Peridot, Sapphire, Topaz

6. Latest Vintage Trend – Old-School Nickname Names for Boys: We’re seeing charming vintage boy nickname names like Archie and Alfie and Freddie beginning to join their sisters Millie and Maisie and Josie, but more surprising to us is the nascent revival of early 20th-century faves like Johnny and Jimmy and Billy on birth certificates, names which once were confined to comic strips and old radio and TV shows. Even more startling is the reappearance of some generic/badass appellations now appealing to the hipster sensibilities of celebs and others.

Example names: Ace, Billy, Buddy, Buster, Hank, Ike, Jimmy, Johnny, Sonny, Spike

7. Most Fashionable Consonant – F: For a letter that had been sitting quietly in the shadows for decades, F has suddenly rocketed forward, particularly for boys, and particularly for boys’ names of Irish descent. And then there’s the whole Family Fran, which started to take off after the election to the papacy of Pope Francis and led to the revival of several surprising half-forgotten Fran names. Fashion-forward names starting with F include the following.

Example names: Faye, Felix, Fern, Finnian, Flora, Florian, Frances, Frankie, Frederick, Frost

8. Coolest Vowel – U: U finally gets its turn in the spotlight this year. As a first initial, U is the least-used letter of the alphabet, and it hasn’t featured in any major baby name trends in… forever. But now u — and its “oo” sound — features in many newly stylish names. Is it the influence of little Prince Louis? His unexpected name may have simply upshifted the trend to major.

Example names: Eulalie, Hugo, Jude, Juniper, Louise, Luca, Luna, Reuben, Tallulah, True

9. Trendiest Name Length – Three Letters: Four letters might be a marker of name popularity, a la Number 1 Emma and Liam, but minimalist three-letter names are the sleek, sweet names of the future.

Example names: Hal, Ida, Jem, Kit, Koa, Liv, Lux, Rex, Rio, Van

10. Wildest Middle Name Trend – Animalia: Parents who want to add a touch of fierceness or individuality to more conventional first name choices are turning to the animal kingdom for the wild vibe. As in many other trends, celebs have led the way, starting with Mariel Hemingway’s daughter Langley Fox back in 1989 to the number of more recent starbabies bearing Bear as their middle name.

Example names: Bear, Falcon, Fox, Hawk, Koala, Lion, Lynx, Otter, Tiger, Wolf

11. Trendiest Trend-Related Trend – Celebrity Surname-Names: Celebrities have influenced baby names since the days of Shirley Temple, and surname-names such as Morgan and Carter have been rising since the conservative 1980s. Now those two trends have combined into one megatrend: Celebrity surnames for baby girls and boys. Goodbye, Shirley; hello, Temple.

Example names: Beckham, Bowie, Ellington, Hendrix, Jolie, Ledger, Lennon, Lennox, Monroe, Wilder

12. Trend Ready to Jump the Shark – Em- Names: We predict that baby namers are about to become all Emmed-out when it comes to baby names in 2019. After all, we had Emily in the Top 25 for 35 years, at #1 for 12 of them. Then came Emma, in the Top 25 since 1998, and still reigning in first place. A number of dueling Em- names followed in their wake, and we predict that the consensus is about to be that enough Em is enough.

Example names: Ember, Emerson, Emery, Emilia, Emily, Emma, Emme, Emmeline, Emmett, Emmy

It's a busy week astrologicallywith December in full swing, and we can make progress on many fronts if we have the desire and will. With the Sun (representing our egos and personas) and Mercury (symbolizing our minds and communication) both in Sagittarius, we're feeling philosophical and open to broad perspectives. There is an eagerness to learn and expand our consciousness. However, be mindful of a tendency to be stubborn or act as if we have all the answers — no one appreciates a know-it-all. Practice active listening and choose your words carefully.

So what does this all mean for your weekly horoscope? Read on to find out!

What's happening astrologically during the week of December 1-8, 2024?

Codi Foster

The Sun opposes Jupiter until December 17, creating a tendency to procrastinate or overindulge. Don’t let these impulses overshadow the meaningful progress you can make, especially while Mercury forms a beneficial trine with Chiron, the wounded healer and shaman of the zodiac. This alignment supports deep psychological work and provides access to our inner psyche. Sudden revelations may occur. Writing in a journal can be enlightening, meeting with a therapist can accelerate healing, and an astrology reading may offer valuable insights into the blocks hindering your growth and how to overcome them. If you are willing to put in the effort, you’ll have ample opportunities for both joy and transformation this week.

Mars will join Mercuryin retrograde, from December 7 through February 24, 2025. During this retrograde period, we’ll benefit from slowing down, consciously practicing patience, and ensuring we get plenty of rest. For those prone to a short temper, it’s especially important to be self-aware. Sagittarius season often encourages bluntness, but fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) need to be particularly cautious with their words. Take the high road, avoid unnecessary confrontations, and remain kind and thoughtful. Don’t hesitate to stand up for yourself for others, as you might feel more courageous than usual. With both personal planets in retrograde, it is really important to plan ahead, review our work, exercise caution, be mindful, patient and have a sense of humor.

Rachel Bacchi

Finally, Venus forms a trine with Uranus, culminating on December 7. You might feel inspired to try something new, as your desires could push you to seek unique and exciting forms of stimulation, pleasure, and enjoyment. Creativity is heightened, allowing you to explore and express your artistic side in fresh ways. Experiment in the studio, garden, kitchen, or even the bedroom — this energy aligns perfectly with Sagittarius' adventurous spirit.

Aries (March 21 – April 20)

Now is your time to shine and share your wealth of life experience with the world around you, Aries. If you’re a teacher, you can effectively impart your knowledge and wisdom to your students. As a parent, the lessons you teach your kids will have a lasting impact. At work, you might record the perfect video or write a compelling proposal. Publishing or producing projects is favored this week. Let your imagination soar, and don’t hold back — your world may expand exponentially.

Taurus (April 21 – May 21)

Feeling a lots of feelings right now, Taurus? It’s a little early, but this is a great week to write your holiday cards. You’ll feel inspired to connect with loved ones on a deep, meaningful level. Taking your time to write from the heart can spark healing. Connect with elders and be playful with children. Consider planning a yoga retreat or ski trip with family and friends. However you decide to embrace these big feelings, do whatever you can to nurture meaningful connections for yourself while you've got all this love swirling around.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

You've got a lot of big ideas, and right now is such a good time to embrace them, no matter where you are — but especially at work. Collaboration within your career will amplify your creative energy. Brainstorming with others can help you refine ideas and find solutions. And while you're at it, take on leadership roles when possible — your natural communication skills will shine. However, don’t rush; take your time and double-check your work before submitting final projects. PS: Your intimate relationships will thrive as you engage in heart-to-heart conversations outside of work, too!

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

You’re likely to feel energized and ready to tackle a variety of tasks this week. It's definitely great to get into gear and lean into that energy, but don't neglect your softer, sensual side while you do so. Pay attention to your dreams — they’ll carry significant messages. Connect with your partner and be willing to be vulnerable to deepen your bond. If you’re single, focus on building a stronger relationship with yourself. Refine your self-care routine and ensure you’re nurturing your mind, body, and spirit equally. You can do it!

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Your words have power this week, and you’ll excel at advocating for causes you’re passionate about. Channel your energy toward creative goals or community projects — you’ll likely inspire those around you. If you don’t already have a community, seek one out. Consider joining a book club, cooking class, or art group to connect with like-minded individuals. It's the perfect time for you to harness all that excitability that colors your days.

Virgo (August 23 – September 21)

This week, focus on nurturing yourself and reflecting on the meaning of “home.” Is it simply a place, or something you hold in your heart? Explore questions about your lineage and how you were nurtured. Balance home and work life by setting plans to maintain harmony throughout the holidays. Create a magical, peaceful space by cleaning or decorating your home, and connect with loved ones, such as your mother or grandmother.

Libra (September 22 – October 22)

Your world is expanding, and growth opportunities abound. Conversations with others — whether neighbors, clerks, or friends — might shift your perspective. Make plans for a journey or enroll in a class to broaden your horizons. Deepen relationships with siblings through meaningful conversations, paving the way for a fulfilling connection. Just don't let indecision keep you from embracing this energy to the fullest!

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

It's a really, really good time to tackle your financial responsibilities this week, Scorpio. Meet with a financial planner to assess your resources and plan for future growth. Avoid impulsive spending if you receive unexpected windfalls. Stick to a holiday budget to avoid financial stress later. Communicate clearly with loved ones about your goals and balance your dreaming with realistic planning. This will go a long way!

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Nobody has to tell you this twice: you're fiery to the max, Sagittarius. Choose your words carefully and ensure you’re communicating with sensitivity, especially with loved ones. While your enthusiasm is contagious, it may overwhelm more sensitive individuals. Channel your energy into clear-cut projects or physical activities, like dancing or working out. You also wanna pay attention to your dreams — they may reveal valuable insights from your subconscious.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

While you're usually the more grounded, in-the-moment person, don't forget that your dreams hold important messages. Before bed, set the intention to remember them and prepare to record them upon waking. Jungian theory suggests every dream character represents a part of yourself — listen to these messages. Oh, and music can also help unlock your inner wisdom this week. Take time to enjoy or create music that uplifts your soul.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

You're typically pretty connected with your community, but acts of service will be deeply and especially fulfilling this week. Group activities are definitely highlighted for you right now — be sure share your knowledge and take on leadership roles in the appropriate settings when you can. Balance your external efforts with quiet contemplation and spiritual practice to stay grounded. Focus on what makes you feel safe and extend that to others in your community.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

This is a good week for you to take time to pause and set your intentions, Pisces. Clear communication is essential at work, so pay attention to how you express yourself (and maybe add an extra emoji or two to that Slack message), double-check and refine your projects before submission., and practice presentations to ensure success. And though work is a centerpiece of your week, be sure to balance your professional life with moments of quiet reflection, as these will inspire you and deepen your connection to the spiritual realm.

Black Friday is here, with thousands of retailers flaunting their best deals of the year. We're shoppers at heart, so you know we've already scoped out 2024's offerings! Given that the list of stores and brands hosting Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year is essentially endless, we're weeding out only the best deals from the places you love to spend (and save).

From beauty faves like Dieux and Kiehl's to home goods from Amazon and Walmart, these are the Black Friday deals you simply can't miss.

What is Black Friday?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving that typically signifies the start of holiday shopping season, though many retailers have started to launch their Black Friday deals earlier year over year. A lot of the deals that stores and brands offer during Black Friday outpace their other sales events (such as Memorial Day and Labor Day) in terms of savings.

When is Black Friday 2024?

Gustavo Fring / PEXELS

Black Friday will land on November 29, 2024.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cottonbro Studio / PEXELS

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving that highlights savings and deals online as opposed to in-store offers. It's one of the busiest times of year for online shopping.

When is Cyber Monday 2024?

Anna Shvets / PEXELS

Cyber Monday will land on December 2, 2024.

When's the best time to shop for holiday gifts?

Vlada Karpovich / PEXELS

We're big believers that it's never too early to start shopping for holiday gifts. The sooner you shop, the better, so you can check everyone off your list ahead of the busy holiday season and have some peace of mind once the real festivities start! Plus, if you're shopping online, starting early gives you ample time to wait for items to be shipped and delivered to your door. If deals and savings are what you're looking for, Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer some really great opportunities.

What's the best thing to shop for during Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

The best thing to shop for during Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday promotions really depends on what your needs are as well as the items you're scoping out to treat yourself (or the people you're gifting for the holidays). Typically, big-ticket items like home appliances, tech products like earbuds, laptops, TVs, and tablets, and luxury self-care tools are heavily discounted during this time.
