14 Reasons to Break Up With Black, According to Instagram Style Bloggers

There’s a reason black has long been the go-to shade for It girls, editors, and lazy girls alike — it’s effortless and always chic. While the dark and dramatic shade will always have a place in our closets, lately bright, colorful clothing has been on our sartorial radar. And we’re not the only ones thinking this way — Instababes everywhere are ditching dark duds in favor of vibrant shades. The proof? It’s all in the pics below.

1. Ultra Bright Accessories: Donning head-to-toe color is a bold move — we get it — which is why brilliantly hued accessories are so key. Enliven any neutral look without going OTT by adding a sunny yellow bag (or printed scarf) to the mix. It’s really that simple.

2. Fiercely Fuchsia: Break up a monochromatic ensemble by playing with the palette a bit. Opting for different variations on a single hue allows you to create a sense of visual intrigue and dimension while ensuring you don’t get swallowed up by your look.

3. Gone Green: Pantone’s color of the year for 2017, Greenery, is eye-catching enough on its own, but when paired with shades of electric blue and neon pink, it takes on a whole new ‘tude. Brunch dates and afternoon strolls will never be the same.

4. Red Hot: Listen up, ladies! All-red-everything is an up-and-coming trend that should definitely be on your radar — it will be EVERYWHERE come fall. But why wait until September to give the show-stopping style move a try? Tap into spring’s good vibes by rocking head-to-toe red RN. Weave in graphic elements and varying silhouettes to prevent the outfit from feeling flat.

5. Posh Purple: Architect and Colorindex founder Monling Lee is making color great again with her knack for pulling together punchy outfits that heavily rely on high-octane hues. Exhibit A: This perfectly purple #OOTD that has us ready to ditch neutrals for good.

6. Rainbow Bright: Model and trendsetter Irene Kim takes the bold-and-bright thing to a whole new level, pairing technicolor stripes and an orange leather crop top with bubblegum pink locks.

7. Orange Opulence: Sara of Collage Vintage knows how to work a little color. The blogger babe dressed down a dreamy orange slip with raw edge denim and funky gold platforms for an unexpected ensemble that makes the transition from day to after-dark an effortless exercise.

8. Pretty in Pink: Power pink is a thing, people, and it doesn’t have to be Wednesday in order for you to bust it out. Be it your BFF’s bachelorette or a casual coffee date, a punchy pink frock will always be a good option. Slip it on with a pair of statement ankle boots and stunner shades, then proceed to rack up the style points left and right.

9. Fabulous Flora: While Bali would be the best place to sport bright botanicals (can we have Miranda Makaroff’s life, please), they’re just the thing to enliven any urban ensemble. Trick out navy culottes with a ruffled red and blue off-the-shoulder blouse, or throw on a vibrant floral skirt, lace-up sandals, and a plunge-neck cami for a night out on the town.

10. Yellow After Dark: LBDs are great and all, but sometimes you just need to hit reset on your after-hours arsenal. Sunshine yellow offers an unexpected twist on traditional GNO attire and is guaranteed to garner a few extra double taps. Do like Pandora Sykes and opt for a dramatic silhouette and OTT accessories for maximum impact.

11. Ombre, Obviously: Red and pink pairings are essential this season — just as lady-about-town Camila Coelho. The blogger babe’s two-tone robe instantly adds panache to a just-your-average turtleneck and jeans combo, creating an off-duty ensemble that’s fit for everything from gallery browsing to trips to the spa.

12. All the Colors: If there’s one thing we’ve learned about the spring ’17 season, it’s that maximalism is the new minimalism — and Jennifer Lake is living proof. Between the rainbow bright bag, cheery yellow blouse, and pom-tastic earrings, her colorful composition just might inspire us to part ways with neutral palettes for good.

13. Weekend Blues: Pairing two impactful colors can be intimidating — it’s a lot of look — but as Jenn of Cranberry Tantrums illustrates, taking the plunge is totally worth it. A commanding cobalt blue coat grounds the getup, while fiery red accessories bring the heat for a look that’s straight-up fire.

14. Perfect Pastels: ICYMI: Color is kind of Courtney Quinn’s thing. Take style cues from the master herself by ditching snoozy work separates in favor of showstopping pastels (the bolder the better). Between this stunning set and that go-get-’em attitude, you’ll have no problem commanding the boardroom.

Some outfit combos are effortlessly chic, and others, well, look like your closet had a full-blown identity crisis. Now don’t get me wrong – I am all for playing with “unconventional” outfit pairings. Ignoring fashion faux pas and experimenting with varying textures, patterns, colors, and silhouettes can be very fun, but only as long as it works. These 6 “weird” outfit combos, however, do not.

Avoid throwing off your whole look by taking note of these 6 “weird” outfit combos that just look wrong.

1. Flare Jeans + Sneakers

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch High Rise Vintage Flare Jeans

This is one outfit combo I wholeheartedly believe should be worn separately: flare jeans + sneakers.

New Balance

New Balance 530 Sneakers

Pairing flare jeans with sneakers (especially more technical or athletic styles) truly ruins the whole ‘fit. While flare jeans are definitely more retro, sneakers have a modern feel that easily clashes. Plus, you don’t want to add more bulkiness at your ankles and make your look, well, look sloppy.

Free People

We The Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans

Instead, save your flare jeans to wear with heels or tall boots, and rock your fave walking sneaks with trendier jean styles like mom jeans or barrel jeans.

2. Socks + Sandals

Doublesoul

Doublesoul Bekah High Socks

If you know, you know. Socks and sandals can be super cool, but only really when you’re kickin’ it at the campsite. Otherwise, it can make your outfit look conflicting, because while sandals are meant to be breathable, socks add an unnecessary layer of bulk that fully defeats their purpose.

3. Denim + Denim

Anthropologie

Mother The Loop De Loop Denim Jacket

Hear me out: denim on denim can definitely be done in a very stylish way. I love rocking a Canadian tux every once in a while, but only when I know for sure that the washes of denim I’m wearing are matching!

Urban Outfitters

BDG Shelly Boxy Denim Chore Jacket

If the shades of denim you’re wearing don’t match or complement each other, your ‘fit can really lack balance, and people won't be able to tell whether you’re wearing it confidently or ironically.

4. Turtlenecks + Shorts

Quince

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Fisherman Turtleneck Sweater

This “weird” outfit combo is weather confusion at its finest. While turtlenecks give off a cozy, cold-weather vibe, shorts scream summertime. This extreme contrast can make your look very bare-bones and generally odd.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch Sloane Tailored Shorts

If you really want to wear these pieces together, opt for a lightweight turtleneck top to wear with tailored shorts for warmer weather – the less-bulky layers will make more sense together. Plus, you’ll be more polished.

5. Tights + Jorts

Target

A New Day Viney Floral Tights

This throwback look has not aged well – though we used to see a ton of people wearing tights or leggings underneath their jean shorts in the early 2010s, it just looks tacky nowadays.

Free People

We The Free Tippi Denim Shorts

The combo can often look outdated and overly layered, as if you couldn't commit to wearing just shorts or just tights. It’s just confusing – opt to wear one or the other!

6. Flip Flops + Cargo Pants

Target

Shade & Shore Palmer Square Toe Flip Flops

It’s giving Justice and Limited Too vibes… but those stores are in our past for a reason! Flip flops and cargo pants also boast a sense of confusion because while flip flops are inherently laidback and beachy, cargo pants are bulky and often made to be more functional (something flip flops are totally not).

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch Baggy Cargo Pull-On Pants

Since cargo pants take up more room on your silhouette, they can also highlight an obvious imbalance if you’re wearing low-profile flip flops.

When you wake up and get dressed in the morning, the last thing you want to do is make yourself look older. Yet, certain colors have a way of adding years to our appearance without us even realizing it.

While some shades can enhance natural beauty and give you a vibrant glow, others might just make you appear more mature.

Here are the colors that may be aging you so you can steer clear (and have an excuse to give your closet a refresh).

Scroll to find out which colors are actually making you look much older!

1. Neutral Beige

Askar Abayev

Open up TikTok, and you'll find that neutral colors, especially beige, are totally "in" among younger generations. From camel wool coats to tan accessories, these warm hues are considered classic and refined.

However, they also have the potential to make you look older than you are. Shades like beige can wash out your complexion, giving you a flat or lifeless appearance.

To avoid getting bogged down by your own clothing, try mixing beige with bolder and richer tones, like navy or deep jewel shades.

2. Too Much Gray & Black

RF._.studio

We all know that black is generally considered the most flattering clothing color. Its darkness helps smooth out our silhouettes and hide imperfections that lighter colors, like white, would immediately call attention to.

But even though both black and gray are extremely versatile and easy to mix and match, wearing too many dark hues can create harsh contrasts and cast sharp shadows on your face that inadvertently highlight fine lines and wrinkles.

The key is to soften your outfits whenever you can by incorporating warmer tones. If you're wearing a black or gray blouse, for instance, layer a brighter cardigan or blazer on top.

Also, the type of black hue you choose does matter. Those with fairer skin tones should opt for a softer charcoal black, which results in a less jarring contrast.

3. Soft Pastels

SHVETS production

Now that we're rounding the corner on spring, you may have plenty of pastel garments in your closet just waiting to be worn. Unfortunately, you might want to think again.

Even though pastels give off a fresh aesthetic, they're not always the best choice if you're going for a youthful look. The lighter tones can emphasize eye changes as you get older– such as pigmentation of the eyelids and a duller appearance of the sclera or the white part of your eye– and make your eyes appear sunken.

That's why it's advised that you stick with slightly deeper or richer tones to complement your complexion.

4. Monochromatic Outfits

Polina Tankilevitch

Finally, monochromatic outfits are also back in style, but wearing the same color from head to toe might make you look more mature.

The key to appearing youthful is being thoughtful about contrast. You can still look sleek while mixing in different shades. Pairing a cream sweater with deeper tones, like a mocha skirt or boots, will add a lot more depth.

And if you ever feel like your outfits are falling flat, remember that accessories are your best friend. A bold scarf, baseball cap, fun purse, or statement necklace will instantly help your look feel more dynamic and lively.

Bridgerton is known for its romantic storylines, the insane chemistry between its couples, and its beautiful costumes. But it's also known for its needle drops, AKA orchestral covers of iconic rap and pop songs. They bring a contemporary flair to the show but also fit right into a regency ball. After season 3 FINALLY included "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift (not to mention the fact "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull was also there), I have quite a few songs I need to hear in season 4. Let's break 'em down (with spoilers!! You've been warned).

Here are the 10 songs we need to hear in Bridgerton season 4, Netflix!

1. "That's So True" by Gracie Abrams

StillMoving.Net for Netflix

The internet went absolutely crazy over "That's So True" — and posted endless edits of TV characters running during the bridge. So I'm gonna need to see Benedict and Sophie run to one another while this plays in the background, K?

2. "Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan

Netflix

Nobody throws a party like the Bridgertons, and nobody creates party music like Chappell Roan. I could totally see this song being added to Bridgerton season 4's music during a big, empowering scene...or during a more upbeat moment in the masquerade ball.

3. "Taste" by Sabrina Carpenter

Gavin Brown/Netflix

"Taste" is all about Sabrina's love — and the other woman in his life. Since Benedict is torn between Sophie and the Woman in Silver, this could be a clever way to play up Sophie's double identity! (I know what you're thinking: What about "Espresso"? Feel free to add multiple Sabrina songs, Netflix).

4. "Love Story" by Taylor Swift

Liam Daniel/Netflix

With the star-crossed-lovers of it all, what could be more fitting than Taylor Swift's "Love Story," which is all about a Romeo and Juliet-esque romance?

5. "Messy" by Lola Young

Gavin Bond/Netflix

Sophie is constantly overworked and used by her step-mother, and "Messy," which essentially talks about the idea of never being good enough, is a perfect fit the moment Sophie doesn't know what to do.

6. "Symphony (feat. Zara Larsson)" by Clean Bandit

Liam Daniel/Netflix

I know, I know. This became one giant meme and can't be taken seriously anymore. But you can't deny this is the PERFECT party song for Bridgerton season 4.

7. "Sailor Song" by Gigi Perez

Liam Daniel/Netflix

This haunting and ethereal song has been on repeat — and I can just hear it playing while Benedict daydreams about Sophie. (Or when they finally have their first kiss 👀).

8. "Champagne Coast" by Blood Orange

Netflix

This is another emotional song that I've been obsessed with. Netflix, it's perfect for any and all montages and flashbacks, just in case you were wondering.

9. "Birds of a Feather" by Billie Eilish

Liam Daniel/Netflix

I love the women of Bridgerton — and when Penelope, Eloise, and Kate inevitably welcome Sophie into the family, this would make the perfect background song.

10. "Diet Pepsi" by Addison Rae

Liam Daniel/Netflix

Bridgerton loves a steamy scene...and the people love Addison Rae's "Diet Pepsi." I'll leave it at that.
