5 Races That Could Decide the Future of Women’s Rights

For so many Americans, the stakes in this November’s midterm elections frankly couldn’t be higher. And this is especially true for American women, who comprise the majority of registered voters.

Hopefully, for voters who weren’t able to recognize the stakes of the 2016 election, events of the past two years have shown them the critical, arguably even life-or-death nature of voting.

In the past two years, women have watched Congress repeatedly try to repeal the Affordable Care Act and pass health bills that would potentially allow pregnancy and sexual assault to be treated by insurers as pre-existing conditions. We’ve watched state governors and legislatures work to defund Planned Parenthood and enact dangerous legislation to restrict abortion and reproductive rights. We’ve watched the Trump administration propose global and domestic gag rules on women’s health providers, and fulfill a campaign promise of nominating judges with anti-choice records to the Supreme Court and courts across the country.

It’s no coincidence that in recent years, US maternal death rates — which are the highest in the industrialized world — have been on the rise, concentrated in regions where laws have made reproductive health care virtually inaccessible. And if the conflict at the Supreme Court and revelations of #MeToo have shown us anything, it’s that women’s rights in this country are at a crossroads. This November, the outcomes of some key races across the country could dramatically impact the lives and futures of American women.

President Trump and his anti-women record and platform may not explicitly be on the ballot this November. But through electing state legislators, governors, and Congress members who will stand up for women’s rights, we can counteract some of the most dangerous aspects of his agenda, and pave the way forward for women across the country to live safe, healthy, and equitable lives. Here are the races to watch for:

U.S. Senate: Beto O’Rourke vs. Ted Cruz

In a once long-shot race to represent Texas in the US Senate, El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke is now polling within the margin of error against incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, and even leading Cruz by two points in one September poll. Pollsters have recently shifted the race from “likely Republican,” to “leans Republican,” to “toss-up.”

Both candidates are notably men, but this race is particularly significant for women’s rights, among other key issues such as immigration, health care, and criminal justice, because of how deeply O’Rourke and Cruz differ in their positions. Where Cruz has been recognized by progressive group American Bridge as one of the 15 worst members of Congress for women’s rights, O’Rourke’s platform includes a section dedicated to women’s health, where he pledges to protect and expand access to abortion, birth control and emergency contraception, and maternal care, and to address Texas’ highest-in-the nation maternal death rates.

Cruz’s record includes leading the charge against the Affordable Care Act and its guidelines and protections that specifically helped women, vigorously opposing Planned Parenthood and abortion rights, and voting to confirm Trump’s anti-choice judicial nominees. If O’Rourke is able to flip Cruz’s seat blue, he would be a reliable, much-needed pro-choice vote that could save women’s health and lives.

Georgia Governor’s Office: Stacey Abrams vs. Brian Kemp

Speaking of polar opposite candidates, Democrat Stacey Abrams is running a competitive race against Trump-endorsed Brian Kemp, a Republican notorious for running a campaign ad in which he appears to threaten his daughter’s prom date with a firearm. If elected, Abrams would be America’s first Black woman governor. According to Real Clear Politics, the race is neck-and-neck as of the beginning of September.

Compared to the rest of the US, where 90 percent of counties across the country lack an abortion provider, in Georgia, 96 percent of counties lack a provider. And where Kemp has said he’s running to be a “pro-life governor” and praised Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban earlier this year, in Georgia’s legislature, Abrams worked to fight a 20-week abortion ban and has pledged to protect and expand reproductive rights and health care access as governor.

Abrams has also drawn wide attention for her campaign’s commitment to deep, intersectional organizing, and her focus on the interconnected nature of issues like civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, gun violence, and poverty.

In addition to her commitment to key issues that disproportionately affect women’s health, opportunities, and living standards, Abrams’ campaign could also shatter a crucial glass ceiling for women of color across the country.

Iowa Governor’s Office: Fred Hubbell vs. Kim Reynolds

In another competitive, high-stakes gubernatorial race, Democrat Fred Hubbell is running to unseat Republican incumbent Gov. Kim Reynolds. If Reynolds’ name sounds familiar, you likely heard about her earlier this year when she signed into law the most extreme anti-abortion law in the country, known as the fetal heartbeat law. If it hadn’t been put on hold in court, the law would have banned abortion in the state at about six weeks — before most women even know they’re pregnant.

In contrast, where Reynolds has spent her time as governor steadily attacking funding for Planned Parenthood and other women’s health organizations in the state, Hubbell formerly served as the chair of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa, and has pledged to protect funding for women’s health if elected.

Reynolds’ record on women’s rights has consequences that reach far beyond Iowa. For example, in signing the fetal heartbeat bill, Reynolds set a precedent for other governors to sign radical anti-abortion laws. In recent years, more than a quarter of all restrictions on abortion enacted since Roe v. Wade were passed between 2011 and 2016, and nearly all on the state-level. This wave of mounting threats to women’s reproductive rights across the country is not only enabled but ultimately led by anti-choice governors like Reynolds.

Average polling by Real Clear Politics shows the race is close, but polling from September shows Hubbell up five points.

Congressional District CA-45: Katie Porter vs. Mimi Walters

In California’s 45th district, Elizabeth Warren-protege and consumer protection attorney Katie Porter is running as the Democratic nominee to unseat Republican incumbent Mimi Walters. In a huge year for women candidates, Porter and Walters, both women, differ vastly on the issues — especially where women’s rights are concerned — and polling in the district, which has voted for Republican representatives since its nascence in 1983, indicate a nail-biter that could decide which party takes the House.

Walters, who has voted in line with President Trump 98.9 percent of the time, was a leader in launching a 2015, multi-million dollar investigation of Planned Parenthood meant to stigmatize and discredit the organization. In contrast, Porter’s platform includes protecting funding for Planned Parenthood and access to birth control and abortion, and fighting for a Medicare-for-All system.

Porter has also been vocal about her personal experiences with domestic violence, a prevalent issue among US women. If elected, Porter has spoken about aiming to destigmatize survivors’ experiences and advocate for their rights. In addition to gaining a crucial vote for women’s health, Porter’s victory in this race could also amount to some much-needed representation of survivors as well as working mothers of young children in government.

US Senate: Jacky Rosen vs. Dean Heller

Across the country in states like North Dakota, Florida, and Tennessee, crucial US Senate races are being recognized as toss-ups. Key Senate powers such as confirming Supreme Court nominees, making crucial decisions about the budget, and passing meaningful federal legislation are at stake, and as we’re seeing with the contentious confirmation process of Brett Kavanaugh, who controls the Senate is pivotal to women’s rights and dignity in this country.

In Nevada, Democratic Congress member Jacky Rosen is running a competitive toss-up race against Republican incumbent Dean Heller, who has dismissed an allegation of attempted rape against Kavanaugh as a “hiccup” in the confirmation process, and consistently voted to ban any public funding for abortion care.

In addition to her platform of protecting and expanding women’s health care and endorsements from NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood, and EMILY’s List, Rosen also lists addressing the gender wage gap for American women on her platform. In the Senate, Rosen would be a vote to protect funding for Planned Parenthood, reject Supreme Court nominees with anti-women records, and, in direct contrast with Heller’s harmful record on equal pay and the minimum wage, fight for economic equity and opportunity for women.

Among the many competitive races for US Senate, Rosen’s chances of winning and her dramatic contrasts with Heller on key women’s rights issues make this a crucial race for American women to watch.

Any Hunger Games fan will agree that one of the best parts about Catching Fire is that it offers a whole new look at Haymitch Abernathy's character. The mentor (played by Woody Harrelson in the film franchise) won the 2nd Quarter Quell, and the brief mention of his Games totally captured fans' attention, leading to fan art, fanfiction, and even some viral short films. Well, we're finally getting the full story thanks to a brand new Haymitch Hunger Games book, just in time for spring 2025!

Here's everything we know about Sunrise On The Reaping, coming March 2025.

Who's narrating the audiobook?

Cam McLeod/Paramount

It was confirmed on February 3 that Yellowstone actor Jefferson White will narrate the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook.

“It's an honor to be a small part of a world I’ve loved for so long — Suzanne Collins is a genius and it's equal parts exhilarating and terrifying to be back in Panem," he told People.

See The Official 'Sunrise On The Reaping' Cover

Amazon

The Sunrise on the Reaping cover was unveiled the morning of October 16 and it's just as beautiful as we hoped! It continues the tradition from the other books of a bold background color with gold and white accents, and I'll admit I was surprised when I first saw the snake and the mockingjay. The snake is obviously a nod to President Snow, and we know that both Lucy Gray Baird and Katniss Everdeen are two songbirds the President was never able to shake. Will Haymitch Abernathy become one as well?

In the original books, Haymitch starts out as an angry man with no friends or family who always has a drink in his hand, but by the end of Mockingjay, he's a wise, caring father figure for Katniss — and I'm betting Sunrise on the Reaping will show us plenty of those character traits as he has to make his way through the Hunger Games.

One detail on the cover that concerns me is the fact the snake and the songbird are connected, and that a sun sits between them. David Levithan, Scholastic's vice president, publisher, and editorial director told TODAY that just like the other covers, this one features "one of the central themes of the series: how conflicting forces can be connected by their common nature, the songbird and the snake springing from the same source."

When is Sunrise on the Reaping coming out?

Lionsgate

Sunrise on the Reaping will hit stores on March 18, 2025.

What is the Sunrise on the Reaping going to be about?

Scholastic/Instagram

The new Hunger Games book is called Sunrise on the Reaping. According to the official announcement, the story will take place 24 years before The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the 50th Games' reaping. While fans had hoped the story would chronicle Haymitch's victory, it wasn't confirmed until October 16. Read the full synopsis below:

"As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight ... and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena."

Yes, you can pre-order the book now!

What happened in Haymitch's Hunger Games?

Lionsgate

As a Quarter Quell, the 50th Hunger Games had a twist. Just like the 75th Hunger Games pulled the tributes from the existing victors, the 50th required double the tributes, meaning Haymitch (who was 16 years old at the time) was one of 48 tributes, not 24.

The arena was a breathtaking landscape with a forest, snow-capped mountains, and beautiful flowers. But Haymitch quickly realized the beauty was a trap, and that everything in the arena was poisonous. He was able to outsmart the rest of the competitors, but after he used the forcefield against the other remaining tribute to secure his victory (a move that offended the Capitol), President Snow retaliated by killing his family and his girlfriend.

Is Sunrise on the Reaping about Haymitch?

Murray Close/Lionsgate

Yes, Sunrise on the Reaping is about Haymitch Abernathy and his win during the 50th Hunger Games.

Lauren Graham's new TV show on Tubi, The Z-Suite, follows an advertising CEO named Monica, and her faithful friend Doug (Nico Santos), who get cancelled, fired, and replaced by a whole new Gen Z social media team after an ad campaign gone wrong. So naturally, when I sit down with the two stars in New York City, I have to ask what their most-used app is.

"I think mine is probably a New York Times games and cooking," Lauren Graham tells Brit + Co exclusively. "I'm new to Instagram and I'm still working it out."

And when it comes to Gen Z slang, "I 'sus' every now and then," Nico says. "I still don't get cheugy."

"Somebody my age the other night said they liked my 'fit,' and I was like, 'Hold on,'" Lauren jokes. "I'm one of those boring people who still will write out entire words in a text because it's just is offensive to me to shorten everything until I'm not even sure what I'm doing."

Yes, Lauren Graham is truly as funny as you'd hope in real life, and The Z-Suite is the perfect way to show off that humor.

Keep reading to see why Lauren Graham's The Z-Suite is the ultimate winter comfort watch — and how Lorelai Gilmore would fit into the picture.

Lauren Graham & Nico Santos say 'The Z-Suite' is the perfect winter TV show.

"It's a fun world. It's easy viewing in a fun, comforting way," Lauren says of the new series, which premiered on Tubi February 6. "It's speaking to a moment in our culture, but without kind of taking a side or being too militant about it. We haven't kind of seen these generations interact, and I don't know, it's fun."

"It's a comedy for everybody certainly, but if you look at our cast, it's I think one of the most diverse casts you'll see out there, which I think is really important," Nico says. "We're telling the story through this lens and just sort of giving the other people a chance to tell their story as well."

And working behind the scenes created a "creative and fun" environment for the cast.

Tubi

Gilmore Girls fans have been wanting more from Lauren Graham ever since the GG finale, her 6-season hit Parenthood, and the Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life Netflix revival came in quick succession. Despite the fact she's found TV gold multiple times, Lauren admits choosing the perfect project is "probably less of a science than people think."

"There's so much that goes into what kind of job you're looking for versus what kind of job comes to you," she says. "I try to think in terms of, is this something I feel I can add to, like can I bring something that maybe is not on the page? And then is this far enough away, because in TV especially, you tend to get offered what you've already done, and so for this to even have a little bit of stretch, which I think it does, was really just a fun opportunity."

"For me it's all about the comedy in the scripts," Nico Santos adds. "That's my background and if I don't laugh reading a script, then I'm like, I'm not gonna do it."

"That is a huge part of it too," Lauren agrees. "Who the creator is and, in speaking to Katie [O’Brien], Nico knew her already, but I just thought this is someone I want to spend my days with, and that's really probably the most important decision, or a piece of the decision is, does this seem like it's going to be creative and fun?"

And one of Lauren's favorite parts of bringing the character of Monica to life was fleshing her out beyond the stereotypical "mean" boss archetype. "You know, the sort of like a tough older boss — I hate saying older, but I relative to the rest of everybody, yes!" she laughs. "I just wanted there to be kind of a reason behind her drive and a heart there, even though it is a pretty broad comedy. We talked about that and tried to find those moments where she's softer."

"There are moments that aren't really grounded and very sort of ridiculous, but it's also very important to infuse that sort of craziness with being grounded," Nico says. "So I think it's creating that balance and that's what makes the character so likable, I think."

Lauren Graham also loved the community aspect of filming 'The Z-Suite.'

Tubi

With the Gen Z, virtual workplace of it all, there will be some The Z-Suite viewers who have never worked in an office, including myself (and Lauren apparently). But seeing all the characters together creates a community that I totally didn't expect when I sat down to watch.

"Any opportunity to be with the community and be working and be back to anything resembling normal is a real gift," Lauren says. "It was fun too, it's like playing in a new kind of place, and I found after a little initial awkwardness that I really could walk into my office and take charge and that was like a new kind of a channel to walk into."

"I just like being a part of an ensemble," Nico says. "On my previous job with Superstore, it's like ensemble comedy and we did that for so long. So that's an environment where I really thrive, so I love it."

And in the spirit of past projects, I can't help but ask how they think Crazy Rich Asians' Oliver and Gilmore Girls' Lorelai would fit into the picture?

"Lorelai would not do well," Lauren Graham says. "She would be bored by the world of the office and I think would relate way more to the Gen Z people cause in her mind, she's always kind of one of the kids. But the office culture, she'd bring them coffee and then leave."

"Oliver would be a client," Nico Santos says. "He'll come to the ad agency with some asks."

Babe wake up, Knives Out 3 is officially on its way! It's been almost two years since we saw Benoit Blanc solve his second case in Netflix's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The film (which stars Janelle Monae, Madelyn Cline, and Kathryn Hahn) followed a case of secret identities, intrigue, and also received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, NBD. On May 24, 2024 Netflix confirmed that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is coming, and on June 10, they confirmed filming began outside London!

Here's everything you need to know about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, including a first look at the characters.

Your first official look at Josh O'Connor in 'Knives Out 3'

John Wilson/Netflix

All I've been able to think about since the first set pictures leaked (see below) is "move over Fleabag Hot Priest!" Our first official look at Josh O'Connor (whose character name we still don't know) and Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc features the duo inside a cathedral with a seriously gloomy atmosphere. I'm willing to bet this is the middle of Benoit's investigation — and I'm hoping Josh is there every step of the way. Who knows; maybe that black jacket will be the new Chris Evans white sweater.

Our first look at Josh O'Connor on the set of Knives Out 3 totally confirmed my personal hope and theory the movie would be set around a graveyard, and it's also the second time Josh has played a priest. He starred in 2020's Emma as Mr. Elton!

Your first look at Benoit Blanc in 'Knives Out 3'

Netflix

Benoit Blanc is debuting a brand new look in the new Knives Out movie. The black and white filter goes perfectly with the Wake Up Dead Man title, and is also reminding me a bit of Frankenstein.

What is the movie Wake Up Dead Man about?

Lionsgate

Daniel Craig narrates the official Instagram announcement, saying, "In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed." The title Wake Up Dead Man definitely sounds scary, so I wouldn't be surprised if the story took place around a graveyard.

I'm expecting it to be extra spooky after actor Josh Brolin (who you'll recognize from Dune and as the voice of Thanos) told New York City Comic Con that the story "scared" him.

"I read it and I was just like, 'God, this is so well written. We just don't read things like this anymore,'" he said during the panel (via People). "It turned out that it was a cast, a lot of people who I had worked with, a lot of people who I loved and hadn't met yet, like Andrew Scott and Josh O'Connor, and people like that...Then doing it turned out, I mean, still one of my favorite jobs that I've ever had."

"I can't say what I played," he continued. "It scared me, which I wanted to be scared."

Is there going to be a Knives Out 3?

Image via Netflix

Yes, we're getting a Knives Out 3! Netflix bought the rights to at least two more Knives Out movies following the success of the first film in the fall of 2019. And on May 24, the official Instagram account confirmed the third movie, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will be hitting our screens soon. The movie will feature Benoit Blanc's "most dangerous case yet."

When is Knives Out 3 coming out?

Netflix

Knives Out 3 is coming in 2025. While we don't have a specific release date yet, the title and graphics for Wake Up Dead Man is definitely giving spooky Halloween vibes. Hopefully we can add it to our list of our Favorite Halloween Movies!

Will Wake Up Dead Man be on Netflix?

Yes, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be available to stream on Netflix.

Who's in the cast of Knives Out 3?

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Our first Knives Out 3 cast members are here! In addition to Daniel Craig, we'll see Challengers' Josh O’Connor and Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny. Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church are also in the cast of Wake Up Dead Man.

Considering the franchise has Madelyn Cline, Chris Evans, Janelle Monae, and Ana de Armas, I knew Netflix wouldn't disappoint!

Is Knives Out 1 connected to Knives Out 2?

Lionsgate

Knives Out 2 is a standalone sequel to the first Knives Out movie. So Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc helps with each case, even if the rest of the characters don't know each other. I'm expecting Knives Out 3 to follow that same format.

6. Teriyaki Mushroom Mini Bao Buns

I looove bao buns, and the fact that TJ's just made them mini has me so excited for my next grocery run! TJ's says each bite in this $5 bag is "mighty flavorful," thanks to the inclusion of three kinds of mushrooms, carrots, onions, spring onions, and an "aromatic" teriyaki miso sauce. They're extremely easy to prep in the microwave – I could easily see myself grabbing a couple for a quick afternoon snack.

Trader Joe's

7. Dark Chocolate Bark

If you were wondering where the sweet stuff was, it's right here: in the shape of some dee-licious chocolate. This $5 dark chocolate bark houses tons of tiny puffed quinoa seeds and dried raspberry pieces that make each bite wonderfully crunchy and a lil' fruity.

'Tis the season for love — Hailee Steinfeldand Josh Allen are engaged! The 27-year-old actress (who you'll recognize from Pitch Perfect 2 and Hawkeye) and 28-year-old Buffalo Bills quarterback were first romantically linked in May of 2023, and "have been head over heels from the start," according to a People source. "Their families are thrilled."

This celebrity couple has the final word on romance if you ask me: trips to Paris, baby showers, and serious PDA (in Cabo no less). But nothing gets more romantic than Josh's proposal on November 22, 2024. An arch covered in roses and a grassy hill with flowers and vases filled with sand. When asked how it felt to play football as a fiancé, Josh said it "felt good. Felt free."

Keep scrolling to see Hailee Steinfeld & Josh Allen's oh-so-romantic engagement post — and some key moments that led to it.

Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen shared a kiss during the NFL Honors.

NFL on FOX

On February 6, during the NFL Honors, Josh Allen won the 2025 Most Valuable Player, and he briefly celebrated before going onstage by giving Hailee a kiss! "You've been my rock, you are my best friend," he told her in his acceptance speech. "I would not be standing on the stage if it weren’t for you."

Hailee, who looked overjoyed during his acceptance speech (you can see tears in her eyes!), also look gorgeous in her strapless & fitted black gown, diamond necklace, and engagement ring. The ring features a round-cut jewel that's equal parts classy and romantic. Hailee always looks good, and I truly can't wait to see what she looks like on her big day.

What kind of engagement ring does Hailee Steinfeld have?

Hailee Steinfeld's engagement ring features a round-cut gem that "appears to be about a three-and-half to four-carat round brilliant diamond set in a thin platinum solitaire setting,” Olivia Landeau, founder and CEO of The Clear Cut, told Brides. “Her engagement ring is timeless and traditional. She opted for a classic ring versus following trends. If her diamond is natural, the ring is estimated to cost anywhere from $70,000 to $150,000, depending on its quality.”

Did Josh Allen get engaged to Hailee Steinfeld?

Yes, Josh Allen & Hailee Steinfeld are engaged! The couple made a joint post to Instagram to celebrate, and Josh captioned the photo, "♾️ 11•22•24 ♾️." The Summer I Turned Pretty's Conrad and Belly have nothin' on Hailee Steinfeld & Josh Allen's eternal love! ;)

"The biggest congratulations ❤️," Hailee's Pitch Perfect costar Rebel Wilson commented. Chad Micheal Murray was also excited for the couple, commenting, "Congrats brother!"

Is Hailee Steinfeld in a relationship in 2024?

Yes, Hailee Steinfeld has been with Josh Allen since the summer of 2023. When they were first linked, a source told People that "it's new, but they are having fun."

And that fun clearly turned into something much more! Josh went Instagram official in October of 2024 (with photos from a Paris trip Hailee posted in April), and the comments flooded with fans and friends showering the couple in love. "Babe wake up, Joshy just hard launched Hailee," one user said, while another added, "thank you for making Hailee happy!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼."

In the October 18 edition of her Beau Society newsletter, Hailee joked that after she and Josh gifted each other the Miyabi Kaizen chef's knife last Christmas, "he told me there's an old wive's tale that if you gift your significant other a knife you have to pay for it, otherwise it signifies the severing of a relationship. So we exchanged quarters so we didn't have that bad omen." This just proves how well they know each other!

Are Taylor Swift and Hailee Steinfeld still friends?

Yes, Taylor Swift and Hailee Steinfeld are still friends. 9 years after Hailee starred in Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" music video, Taylor liked Hailee and Josh's Instagram post (which she doesn't do often), and her BF Travis Kelce commented, "Congratulations!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻."

When is Hailee Steinfeld getting married?

The couple hasn't told us their wedding date yet, but stay tuned for news on the big day — and wedding photos!

Congrats to the happy couple! Loving all the celeb love? Read up on Shaun White & Nina Dobrev's engagement, too!
