6 Essential Bras Every French Girl Owns

Deconstructing the Parisian woman’s world-renowned style is no easy feat. Between that hint of attitude, her less-is-more beauty habits, and the laissez-faire nature of her lazy-girl strands, choosing garments that channel her innate confidence is key — but how? To find out, we asked our very own French-American muse, Adrienne Gaskell, of the Parisian lingerie line Simone Pérèle. In addition to priceless French-style pointers — like saying yes to lace and embracing sheer brassieres — we learned that the secret behind the French woman’s sly smile has to do with what she’s wearing underneath. These are the six bras every French girl owns that will put the twinkle in your eye tout le temps.

Black Lace Demi

1. Gaskell reveals, “Lace is as essential to the French girl’s lingerie wardrobe as perfume is to her beauty routine — and an all-over black lace bra is always needed. The secret to wearing an all-lace bra? Wear it for yourself, unapologetically, and with confidence. Paris style queen, Caroline de Magret, summed it up when she said, ‘Wear a black bra under your white blouse, like two notes on a sheet of music.’ Avoid a black push-up or opaque T-shirt bra under a white T-shirt, as this presents ‘too much bra’ and detracts from the edgy elegance of a delicate lace number. Otherwise, black lace under white is a go!” Brit + Co Pick: Blush Lingerie Sheer Desire Demi ($58)

Triangle Bralette

2. La Parisienne’s go-to bra of the moment is the lace triangle bralette. It exudes natural sexiness and a cool factor that doesn’t try too hard. The bralette lends itself perfectly to pops of color and touches of lace under your outfit. Wear a white lace bralette under your white tee to instantly elevate your look. It’s chic and yet totally French-cool (i.e., ‘not trying too hard’). Bralettes are also a great way to play with color. Wear shades that make you feel beautiful and laces that feel divine against your skin. You should never feel intimidated or uncomfortable in your lingerie… Au contraire, lace is intimate, feminine and reflects your unique personal style.” Brit + Co Pick:Anine Bing Stretch-Lace Soft Cup Triangle Bra ($80)

SleEk Seamless Bra

3. “Every French girl has a seamless bra for those curve-hugging outfits (think: body-con dress),” Gaskell continues. “It’s all about creating a smooth and seamless silhouette. But in true Parisian style, even her most seamless bra always has a little edge. For a fresh take on the T-shirt bra, look for stylish touches like satin or hints of lace, in feminine neutrals like blush, or colors you love. You’ll feel pretty and still achieve the effortless and seamless look your outfit calls for.” Brit + Co Pick: Thirdlove Satin Demi Bra ($76)

Sexy Plunge

4. “French girls love the occasional reveal of a sexy low-cut décolleté, which she’ll often balance with a pair of high waisted jeans and undone hair. Seduction is all about flirtation… hinting at what’s to come!” reveals Gaskell. “Nab a bra with a low plunging neckline and rock it under a button-down or plunge top or wrap dress. Reveal a hint of scalloped lace under your look for a little extra ooh la la. French girls love to reveal a peek of lace.” Brit + Co Pick: Implicite Espiègle Plunge ($59)

Bold statement bra

5. Gaskell lets us in on another French style commandment, saying, “For the French, lingerie is about artfully covering the body, hiding just enough to tease the senses. What you cover, how you cover it, and with what is the key to the game of seduction. Lingerie is about adorning the body, so go ahead, take pleasure in the process. Be bold, but most of all, wear pieces that you feel amazing in, and wear it with total confidence.” Brit + Co Pick: Simone Pérèle Java Sheer Plunge ($105)

elegant push-up

6. When she doesn’t go for a strapless style, elegant push-ups pair best with lower necklines in evening. “The secret to wearing a push-up like a French girl is simple: Don’t wear it to reveal cleavage. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s more about creating that va-va-voom silhouette than it is about showing skin. Look for details like lace, embroidery, and sexy strapping to wow with that hourglass shape on date night.” Brit + Co Pick: La Perla Marble Mood ($315)

Some outfit combos are effortlessly chic, and others, well, look like your closet had a full-blown identity crisis. Now don’t get me wrong – I am all for playing with “unconventional” outfit pairings. Ignoring fashion faux pas and experimenting with varying textures, patterns, colors, and silhouettes can be very fun, but only as long as it works. These 6 “weird” outfit combos, however, do not.

Avoid throwing off your whole look by taking note of these 6 “weird” outfit combos that just look wrong.

1. Flare Jeans + Sneakers

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch High Rise Vintage Flare Jeans

This is one outfit combo I wholeheartedly believe should be worn separately: flare jeans + sneakers.

New Balance

New Balance 530 Sneakers

Pairing flare jeans with sneakers (especially more technical or athletic styles) truly ruins the whole ‘fit. While flare jeans are definitely more retro, sneakers have a modern feel that easily clashes. Plus, you don’t want to add more bulkiness at your ankles and make your look, well, look sloppy.

Free People

We The Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans

Instead, save your flare jeans to wear with heels or tall boots, and rock your fave walking sneaks with trendier jean styles like mom jeans or barrel jeans.

2. Socks + Sandals

Doublesoul

Doublesoul Bekah High Socks

If you know, you know. Socks and sandals can be super cool, but only really when you’re kickin’ it at the campsite. Otherwise, it can make your outfit look conflicting, because while sandals are meant to be breathable, socks add an unnecessary layer of bulk that fully defeats their purpose.

3. Denim + Denim

Anthropologie

Mother The Loop De Loop Denim Jacket

Hear me out: denim on denim can definitely be done in a very stylish way. I love rocking a Canadian tux every once in a while, but only when I know for sure that the washes of denim I’m wearing are matching!

Urban Outfitters

BDG Shelly Boxy Denim Chore Jacket

If the shades of denim you’re wearing don’t match or complement each other, your ‘fit can really lack balance, and people won't be able to tell whether you’re wearing it confidently or ironically.

4. Turtlenecks + Shorts

Quince

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Fisherman Turtleneck Sweater

This “weird” outfit combo is weather confusion at its finest. While turtlenecks give off a cozy, cold-weather vibe, shorts scream summertime. This extreme contrast can make your look very bare-bones and generally odd.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch Sloane Tailored Shorts

If you really want to wear these pieces together, opt for a lightweight turtleneck top to wear with tailored shorts for warmer weather – the less-bulky layers will make more sense together. Plus, you’ll be more polished.

5. Tights + Jorts

Target

A New Day Viney Floral Tights

This throwback look has not aged well – though we used to see a ton of people wearing tights or leggings underneath their jean shorts in the early 2010s, it just looks tacky nowadays.

Free People

We The Free Tippi Denim Shorts

The combo can often look outdated and overly layered, as if you couldn't commit to wearing just shorts or just tights. It’s just confusing – opt to wear one or the other!

6. Flip Flops + Cargo Pants

Target

Shade & Shore Palmer Square Toe Flip Flops

It’s giving Justice and Limited Too vibes… but those stores are in our past for a reason! Flip flops and cargo pants also boast a sense of confusion because while flip flops are inherently laidback and beachy, cargo pants are bulky and often made to be more functional (something flip flops are totally not).

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch Baggy Cargo Pull-On Pants

Since cargo pants take up more room on your silhouette, they can also highlight an obvious imbalance if you’re wearing low-profile flip flops.

I don't know whether to treat my period acne as guests or annoying pests. I'm familiar with balancing my hormones, but even that seems to be a great mystery when painful breakouts appear on my forehead or chin. Even relying on a face wash fromFarmacy Beautyisn't always a match for their stubbornness.

But esthetician Danielle Gronich wants to dispel the idea hormonal acne's impossible to treat. Plus, she's exposing the truth about ingredients that could be causing flareups 👀. Known as The Acne Guru, Gronich has over 10 years of experience treating cystic acne, and is the founder of both the San Diego Acne ClinicCLEARSTEM Skincare.

What's the biggest myth about hormonal acne?

Taylor Nicole/Dupe Photos

I love relying on TikTok to find cute matcha drink recipes to remake, but I know some of the skincare advice shared on the app shouldn't be followed. But there's one thing in particular Gronich isn't a fan of.

"The biggest myth about hormonal acne is that you have to be on birth control in order to solve it. This myth is all over social media, but I believe it comes from the medical world not really understanding hormones and having to rely on prescriptions to override them."

Would you believe me if I told you she's not wrong? I've been on birth control off and on since I was teenager, but I've yet to see it get to the root of my acne problem!

What are different types of hormonal acne?

Anna Nekrashevich/Pexels

Did you know not all hormonal acne stems directly from your period? According to Gronich, "there are many different triggers" for it with "the most common ones being stress and high sugar or processed foods" because they "impact our hormones." However, that's not all!

"Also extremely common is PCOS, estrogen dominance, progestin-related acne from certain birth control controls like the hormonal IUD, and then there is another type of hormonal acne caused by the vitamins and supplements we take," she adds. Going a step further, Gronich says "certain vitamins and supplements can spike testosterone or interfere with other enzyme processes that throw off our hormones."

I guess this is why my doctor always recommends I consult with her before taking random tablets so I'm not disrupting anything in my body!

Why do I see breakouts on my forehead, cheeks, or chin sometimes?

Polina Tankilevitch/Pexels

Remember the face mapping tool we were introduced to years ago? There's truth to them which is why Gronich created a Pore-Clogging Ingredient Checker for you to get more insight about what you're putting on your skin. But back to what your breakouts are trying to tell you!

Given Gronich's experience, she knows "different areas of the face can represent different parts of the body." She sees "hormonal acne most on the chin and jawline" because "we have the deepest hair follicles there." Want to know what this means for our body's reaction to certain foods and products?

"Dairy has insulin-like growth factor hormone so many people who consume dairy regularly get hormonal acne right on their chin. Some people are taking too much vitamin B 12 which throws off their hormones and you see it on the jawline," she says.

Then there's our relationship with using a ton of beauty products. Gronich is firm about telling "people to remove pore-ingredients from their skin care ad makeup" because "acne that's all over your face" is the direct result of "something that's being put all over your face." Not being aware of what we're using "will flare with our PMS cycle, so we accidentally think it's hormonal," accodring to her. But nope!

"...it can also just be caused by those hidden pore-clogging ingredients," she states.

Okay, how do I treat what feels like hormonal acne?

Yan Krukau/Pexels

No matter your skin type, there's a few ingredients you can use to treat hormonal acne over time. "People can treat their hormonal acne with mandelic acid, and spot treatments like sulfur," Gronich shares. She also says, "Benzoyl peroxide can be a useful tool as well but must be used carefully so as not to over strip the skin. Don't take this advice lightly because I accidentally created more issues when I used this haphazardly.

If you don't want to use Benzoyl peroxide, she says you try "ice rolling." The amount of times you can use this tool depends on your skin type. "...if you are oily, you can use these treatments every day."

How do I treat dark spots left over from hormonal acne

Ron Lach/Pexels

Gronich's tips for treating dark spots are making me rethink my shower habits because I've been doing the opposite of what's considered helpful for my skin. She says, "Avoid using hot water in the shower as it continually inflames the skin and further damages the delicate scar tissue!" Furthermore, you can "use anti-inflammatory products," according to her.

"Serums that contain hyaluronic acid can be very helpful, as well as gentle massaging to activate circulation which stimulates our wound healing response in the skin. Red light therapy can also be fantastic for scarring, along with professional micro needling treatments," she remarks.

The best things you and I can do are being mindful of what we eat, supplements we take, and what we put on our faces. Also, a lot of patience goes a long way when treating hormonal acne.

When you wake up and get dressed in the morning, the last thing you want to do is make yourself look older. Yet, certain colors have a way of adding years to our appearance without us even realizing it.

While some shades can enhance natural beauty and give you a vibrant glow, others might just make you appear more mature.

Here are the colors that may be aging you so you can steer clear (and have an excuse to give your closet a refresh).

Scroll to find out which colors are actually making you look much older!

1. Neutral Beige

Askar Abayev

Open up TikTok, and you'll find that neutral colors, especially beige, are totally "in" among younger generations. From camel wool coats to tan accessories, these warm hues are considered classic and refined.

However, they also have the potential to make you look older than you are. Shades like beige can wash out your complexion, giving you a flat or lifeless appearance.

To avoid getting bogged down by your own clothing, try mixing beige with bolder and richer tones, like navy or deep jewel shades.

2. Too Much Gray & Black

RF._.studio

We all know that black is generally considered the most flattering clothing color. Its darkness helps smooth out our silhouettes and hide imperfections that lighter colors, like white, would immediately call attention to.

But even though both black and gray are extremely versatile and easy to mix and match, wearing too many dark hues can create harsh contrasts and cast sharp shadows on your face that inadvertently highlight fine lines and wrinkles.

The key is to soften your outfits whenever you can by incorporating warmer tones. If you're wearing a black or gray blouse, for instance, layer a brighter cardigan or blazer on top.

Also, the type of black hue you choose does matter. Those with fairer skin tones should opt for a softer charcoal black, which results in a less jarring contrast.

3. Soft Pastels

SHVETS production

Now that we're rounding the corner on spring, you may have plenty of pastel garments in your closet just waiting to be worn. Unfortunately, you might want to think again.

Even though pastels give off a fresh aesthetic, they're not always the best choice if you're going for a youthful look. The lighter tones can emphasize eye changes as you get older– such as pigmentation of the eyelids and a duller appearance of the sclera or the white part of your eye– and make your eyes appear sunken.

That's why it's advised that you stick with slightly deeper or richer tones to complement your complexion.

4. Monochromatic Outfits

Polina Tankilevitch

Finally, monochromatic outfits are also back in style, but wearing the same color from head to toe might make you look more mature.

The key to appearing youthful is being thoughtful about contrast. You can still look sleek while mixing in different shades. Pairing a cream sweater with deeper tones, like a mocha skirt or boots, will add a lot more depth.

And if you ever feel like your outfits are falling flat, remember that accessories are your best friend. A bold scarf, baseball cap, fun purse, or statement necklace will instantly help your look feel more dynamic and lively.

No matter how much you love reading, classic books can feel incredibly intimidating. The language can be hard to understand and the story can be hard to follow. Sometimes I've had to reread the same page multiple times to figure out what's going on. But with prestige TV and more grounded storytelling, book-to-movie adaptations like Wuthering Heights and Anne With an E are giving us new looks at stories that have been around for hundreds of years. And now we can add East of Eden to the list!

Adapted from John Steinbeck's 1952 novel, the story serves as a recreation of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, marked by family relationships and generational betrayal. Netflix is bringing us a limited series, and the best part is that it'll be led by We Live in Time actress Florence Pugh. Whether East of Eden is one of your favorite books, or you've never picked it up, this is one TV show you're going to want to tune into.

Here's everything we know about Florence Pugh's East of Eden, coming to Netflix soon.

'East of Eden' on Netflix brings the "shocking" story to a new generation.

Amazon

East of Eden follows "the multi-generational Trask family saga explored from the perspective of the standout female character Cathy Ames," according to TUDUM. The story ranges from the Civil War to World War I and mainly revolves around brothers Adam and Charles, and Adam's sons Caleb and Aaron.

This Great American Novel deals with everything from guilt and freedom to love and acceptance, with the consistent desire for greatness that a lot of Americans feel at one point in their life or another.

Universal Pictures

The seven-part TV show will be written by Zoe Kazan (She Said), whose grandfather Elia Kazan wrote the script for the original 1955 movie adaptation. “In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan told TUDUM. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound, and free — that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen.”

“Zoe’s thoughtful and artistic vision pays homage to her grandfather's revered film adaptation while beautifully honoring and introducing new audiences to a true canon of American literature,” Peter Friedlander, Netflix's Vice President of Scripted Series said. “She is an inspiring, creative force and we can not wait for everyone to see what she and Jeb, alongside the brilliant cast led by Florence Pugh, bring to screen.”
