7 Fad Diets We’d Like to Leave Behind in 2016

We’re all about getting healthy. Not only does it make your body feel good to eat well and exercise regularly, but it’s also great for your mental health. Unfortunately, sometimes people take their efforts a little too far in the name of wellness. What are we talking about? Fad diets. The worst thing about fad diets is that they’re pretty much always ineffective. Even if you lose some weight while on one, you’re very likely to gain it back because of the drastic difference between the diet and how you normally eat. In general, it’s better to make small, lasting changes to improve how you eat — that way you can enjoy the results long term! Curious which diets we saw this year that don’t stack up to science? 1. Negative Calorie Food Diet: You may have heard that some foods have “negative” calories. The idea here is that these foods — like lettuce, celery and grapefruit — have such low calorie values that your body burns more calories digesting them than the number you’ve ingested. This diet involves focusing on these negative calorie foods in order to reduce the total amount of calories you’re eating and, thus, lose weight. The problem? There’s no such thing as a negative calorie food. In theory the idea of these foods makes sense, but there’s no scientific evidence that they are real. While you’ll certainly benefit from eating more fruits and veggies, there’s no reason to focus on negative calories since they don’t actually exist!

2. Juice and Smoothie Cleanses: Anytime you hear the word “detox” in relation to a diet, it’s probably a clue to stay away. Your body doesn’t need any help clearing you of “toxins” — that’s what your liver is for! Juice and smoothie cleanses are less popular than they have been in years past, but we still see people trying them, especially diets where all meals are replaced by replacement smoothies. With a juice cleanse, your body is getting almost no protein. With a smoothie cleanse, you’re likely not getting enough fruits and veggies. Plus, these diets aren’t sustainable for a long period of time, meaning that their results will be reversed as soon as you start eating normally. Instead of going all-out on the smoothie and juice thing, include one per day in your well-rounded diet, which should include meals that consist of real, solid food!

3. Fruititarian: We know what you’re thinking, but yes, this is actually a diet that people try. The concept is simple: You only eat fruit. There’s a huge social media community around this trendy fad diet, making it way more popular than you’d expect. Just check out the #fruititarian hashtag on Instagram. It’s virtually impossible to eat only fruit all the time, so many fruititarians focus on eating mostly fruit, but add in some plant-based protein to keep themselves healthy. Still, eating such large quantities of fruit seriously ups your sugar intake and can cause major digestive issues. If you don’t want to spend all day in the bathroom on the reg, we’d say skip this trend.

4. Raw Food Diet: Here’s the deal with the raw food diet. Again, it’s awesome to include as many fruits and veggies in your daily meals as you can, but not all the food you eat needs to be raw and completely unprocessed. Eating only raw foods can cause digestive problems, which may or may not go away over time if you continue with the eating style. Plus, getting enough nutrients is a major challenge. There are many sources of plant-based protein, but if you’re not able to eat things like cooked legumes or protein powder, you’re mainly just left with nuts and seeds. Similarly, it’s challenging to get adequate amounts of other key nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and zinc from only raw and vegan foods. If you’re really interested in testing this out, try incorporating one completely raw meal per day and balancing it out with some cooked foods to make sure you’re getting all the good stuff your body needs.

5. Baby Food Diet: This diet where you literally eat only baby food is one of the craziest fads we’ve ever seen. It’s been around for awhile, and we’d really like to see it disappear with 2016. Because the diet consists of mainly blended or pureed fruits and veggies, it has many of the same issues as juice and smoothie cleanses. What’s more, studies show that actually chewing your food can contribute to satiety, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll feel unsatisfied after following this diet for any prolonged period of time.

6. Gluten-Free: Listen, if you’re not celiac or gluten-sensitive, this diet probably isn’t going to do much for you. It’s true that cutting out bread, pasta and pizza may help you lose weight, but not if you replace those foods with gluten-free alternatives. Gluten-free products often are less healthy than the real thing, since the focus is on making them taste as “real” as possible. Plus, whole wheat products provide a ton of dietary fiber, which is known to be important in the weight loss process. In short, there’s no reason to follow this diet unless you have a medical reason to.

7. Ketogenic Diet: The ketogenic diet has long been used by athletes to achieve peak performance. Essentially, you cut out carbs, reduce protein intake and eat very high levels of fats. The diet’s name refers to the state of ketosis, a medical term for when your body is running on only fat. It’s true that your body will burn fat in this state which will cause you to lose weight, but because the diet is so extreme it can wreak havoc on the way your body processes food and can actually become less effective over time. Yet again, if you adhere to this diet and then return to your normal way of eating, you’re highly likely to gain back any weight lost.

Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.


Why Your Flexibility Stalls

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! If you're an One Tree Hill fan, there's a good chance you're a die-hard Lucas and Peyton shipper, but IRL Chad currently has three children with wife, Sarah Roemer: a son who's nine, a daughter who's six, and another daughter who just turned one.

The reason Chad Michael Murray always brings his fam to set is actually really simple. “I want to be there," he tells Variety of why his family is inseparable. "I got to be there for my daughter’s first steps. I got to take her trick or treating for the first time. And she crushed it!"

The actor really views his family as a unit, and proudly calls them "The Pack," which sounds exactly like something Austin Ames from A Cinderella Story would call his family. But don't worry — even though the family was with him on the set of The Merry Gentlemen, which follows a group of guys who stage a steamy revue to rescue a local venue, the kids don't have any innocence lost.

“It’s not gratuitous by any means," he continues. "We threaded the needle on that film. You go too far and you’re making one movie, you go too under, and it doesn’t work at all. It’s in the perfect space where people won’t feel wrong having it on the TV in the background. It’s the sweet spot, and I’m really proud of that."

Chad and his wife recently celebrated their 10th anniversary on September 19, and he posted the sweetest tribute in honor of the special day. "We’ve jammed more into this 10 years than I ever could’ve imagined. It’s truly astounding," he says on Instagram. "It’s been the Best decade of my life by far- sharing each and every moment with you. We’ve grown this little pack together and seen so much of the world as a family. I’m so grateful for you Sarah. Every day is a better and much brighter day with you in it:)"

"I hope and pray for at least 50 more anniversaries with you," he continues. "Till we’re old and gray… new hips, new knees, our elbow skin will be touching the ground, all the kids will think we’re senile but really we’re just f-ing with them… coz that’s what you do when you’re old and together:) I love you Sarah- Happy 10th Anniversary❤️❤️❤️"

In addition to his new holiday flick, the One Tree Hill actor recently made headlines for commenting on his potential return to the One Tree Hill sequel series that's (hopefully) coming to Netflix soon. We know Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles are involved, but will we see Lucas join Brooke, Peyton, and Rachel? "No clue," he says, although he hopes it “comes together for the fans.”

“I mean, this fandom that has grown, I mean, literally, I was just in Halifax a week ago and, sure enough, I’m running into 11, 12, 13-year-old kids who are in love with Tree Hill,” he continues. “They’re seeing it on Hulu and they’re going, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ It’s stood the test of time and I think to have some new stories, whatever iteration of the show that’s created, I want it for the fans.”

Like most millennials, Miley needs help staying up-to-date on all things Gen Z, including (and maybe especially) when it comes to memes. Luckily, apparently Maxx keeps her in the loop by sending her what he sees online — a time when their eight-year age gap really seems to come in handy. She told Harper's Bazaar, “He looks at life really differently than I do. He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters."

The Grammy-winner went on to explain that Maxx even uses his Gen Z-ness when it comes to their dog (OMG they have a dog together?!). She said, "Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit. I’m like, Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this? And he’s like, On Reddit it says blah, blah, blah."

She went on to explain that Maxx is "very similar" to her. She said, "We just don’t take life too seriously." This all plays into their ability for the two musicians to collaborate on creating, meshing their personal and professional lives pretty seamlessly. According to the article, Maxx helped write the song "Something Beautiful" on her upcoming album, which is apparently the title track...I'm not crying, you are!

While so many couldn't intertwine their careers with matters so personal, Miley clearly feels differently. She said, “I worked with my dad forever. That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other. I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
