7 Nutritionist Tips for Surviving Halloween Candy Season

Hello, October. And hello, Halloween season! While prepping swoon-worthy group costumes and planning our next-level nail designs for the holiday has us ranking ‘ween up there with July 4th fun, all those calorie-laden treats and sugar-bomb overloads aren’t exactly the #BestThingEver. But we’ve got you covered. We tapped top nutritionists on how to stay healthy and outsmart candy cravings this time of year (and hey, don’t forget pumpkin soup and fresh apples from the orchard are also delicious seasonal treats!). Read on and fear that omnipresent office candy bowl no more.

1. Create a goal for November 1. File this under genius: “If you feel out of control around candy, ask yourself how you want to feel when the holiday is over,” says Rebecca Scritchfield, RDN author of the upcoming book Body Kindness. Imagine it’s November 1. How do you feel about the choice you’re about to make or avoid? Do you feel happy and energized by it? Don’t be harsh on yourself, but picturing your future self can oftentimes help curb of-the-moment decisions made without forethought. Note: “Be careful about setting what I call a ‘dead person’s goal,’ like ‘I’ll never eat a single piece of candy.’ As long as you’re alive and well, your goal should be about the actions you want to take, not complete abstinence. You’ll end up overeating something else and miss out on the spirit of the season.”

2. Remember — not all chocolate is equal. “Instead of the low quality ‘chocolate-like’ candy you might find at your office, arm yourself with a bar of 85 percent dark chocolate to help fight the urge. In addition to antioxidants, dark chocolate also has a great deal of fiber, making a few squares a win-win,” says Kayleen St. John, RD, Executive Director of Nutrition and Strategic Development of Euphebe. This win-win is certainly a “why yes” for us! And may we present: 11 healthy chocolate recipes you’ll love more than chocolate cake.

3. Portion out your leftover candy. “If you weren’t able to dole out all of your Halloween candy, try making your own 100-calorie packs with the remains,” say The Nutrition Twins, Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, and authors of The Nutrition Twins’ Veggie Cure. These little pre-portioned packs can help curb overeating while satisfying a hankering for something sweet. Their wise advice: “Commit to having just one bag on days when a candy craving hits. You can make 100-calorie packs from four Hershey Kisses, two Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups miniatures, two mini Nestle Crunch bars, four Tootsie Roll midges, four rolls of Smarties, three Laffy Taffy candies, two fun-size Milk Duds, two mini York Peppermint Patties, or four Jolly Rancher hard candies.” Mmmmm… where should we start?

4. Enjoy your favorites. *Praise emoji* to this rule! “Of all the types of Halloween candy, narrow it down to your top three choices of your absolute favorites. If any of your choices are truly seasonal treats, like candy corn, consider bumping it to your top spot. Only eat from your top three list through the season. Why eat something that isn’t your favorite?” offers Scritchfield.

5. Make some DIY treats at the office. Why didn’t we think of this, oh, in July? “If you’re constantly faced with Halloween candy at work, bring in your own treats,” suggests St. John. “Halve a few bananas, stick Popsicle sticks in the bottom and freeze them. Once frozen, dip in melted dark chocolate and refreeze. Your office will thank you for the tasty and indulgent-feeling treat.” Heck, these are so good, you might just want to whip up a batch at home.

6. Save your wrappers and keep them with you. Again, why didn’t we think of this sooner? “They’re a visual reminder of exactly how much you’ve eaten. There’s no forgetting that you scarfed an entire bag of Snickers minis last night if you’re faced with the proof,” advise The Nutrition Twins. And if you slip up and overindulge, remember there’s no need to sweat it. Be kind to yourself, throw on your favorite YouTube barre workout and move on!

7. Make a pact with yourself (or roomies or boo!) to only eat candy when you’re happy. “Most people overeat sugary candy when they are tired, bored, stressed, or anxious. Not exactly the best time to enjoy it,” cautions Scritchfield. “When you’re happy, you’re likely to set a realistic boundary and stick to it. Usually, a handful or one ‘fun size’ bar is enough to give you the taste you crave. Don’t let the calories or sugar ‘scare’ you when you practice moderation.”

While everyone’s hunting down the next hot sneaker for the summer, French girls are already wearing them. Seriously, it feels like French girls don’t follow trends — they create them — and I couldn’t get enough of it while I was in Paris this spring. While I walked 30+ miles around the city (and shopped a lot), I couldn’t help but notice which sneakers real French girls sported in 2025...and they didn’t disappoint. Here’s the coolest sneaks I saw — and what I’m definitely adding to my cart ASAP!

Scroll to see which sneaker brands all the French girls wore in Paris!

Gola

Gola

Gola Classics Women's Cyclone Sneakers

Gola sneakers are definitely making waves in America, but their presence is way more dominant in Paris. I saw Gola displays at every mall and store I walked into — and they always looked SO cute. Each Gola display always had chic colors and silhouettes. I love this deep red color for summer, but if you're looking for something brighter, I'd try this gorgeous yellow pair!

Autry

Autry

Autry sneakers were everywhere in Paris. While they have plenty of slim styles that resemble popular Pumas and Adidas styles, I loved the chunkier silhouettes like these. I was devastated when they were out of my size in this metallic pair at Galleries Lafayette. But don't worry — I added them to my cart the second I landed back home!

Faguo

Faguo

Faguo White & Beige Low-Top Tennis Shoes

Faguo is a French brand I'm honestly mad I've never seen before. Not only do they have really cute sneakers, but they also have adorable clothes, too (my husband brought this one home). Really though, these sneakers were in so many chic boutiques and department stores. I'd definitely swap your worn out Stan Smiths for this stylish pair of Faguos!

Alohas

Alohas

Alohas Tb.490 Rife Sea Pink Leather Sneakers

I've seen Alohas here and there before, but it was clear they were major in Paris. This sustainable brand "only produces what you actually want to buy" in order to reduce waste. So that means they create limited stock that you can buy on-demand, otherwise you've got to pre-order your shoes. Love that!

Adidas

Adidas

Adidas Samba OG Shoes (Cream White/Violet Tone/Sand Strata)

So I saw these Adidas Sambas and bought them immediately...I couldn't help it! Sambas are obviously THE shoe of the decade, but this colorway just called out to me the moment I saw it. This style felt like a fresh, unique take on the very popular style that I just couldn't pass up. And while my very American self bought these, let it be known that the French girlies definitely still love their Sambas.

Vejas

Vejas

Vejas V-90 Leather White California

Vejas had their moment in the U.S. around 2018, but it's evident that they never stopped being cool in Paris. They're honestly the ultimate white sneaker with the perfect touch of color and personality. I love the suede accents on this pair — they honestly look almost denim-esque, which is perfect for all your summer vibes.

After cutting a significant amount of drink and food items from menus earlier this year, Starbucks is discontinuing another fan-favorite bakery item: the Double Chocolate Brownie. Gasp! Say it isn’t so! But alas, it seems to be… so. Chatter among Starbucks employees sadly say that the brownie will leave menus super soon.

Here’s everything we know about the famed Starbucks brownie being discontinued.

they’re discontinuing the brownie 😭😭😭
byu/riffexxx instarbucks

An internal monthly report sent to Starbucks employees at the beginning of April reportedly detailed the brownie’s discontinuation, according to an employee on a Reddit thread: “stores will be getting their last shipments in mid-late April and once those sell out [it's] done,” they said.

Brit + Co reached out to Starbucks for an official comment on the news. Starbucks confirmed that the Double Chocolate Brownie will be removed from the Starbucks menu in the U.S. in May in order to focus on premium offerings rooted in customer trends and preferences.

Starbucks

The news comes amid a slew of changes at Starbucks – the chain is reducing the size of the menu by 30% and revamping the employee dress code (of which many workers are disgruntled about). Starbucks cites a “focus on fewer, more popular items, executed with excellence” for the ongoing changes, which will allow the company to “make way for innovation, help reduce wait times, improve quality and consistency, and align with our core identity as a coffee company.”

Starbucks

Several baristas sounded off with frustration in the Reddit thread that surfaced the brownie’s demise:

“Bruh why the brownie and not the madelines?” one person wrote. “Like I rarely sell a Madeline but we keep selling out of brownies!! Now I have to explain to a LOT of customers that their favorite little treat has been discontinued.”

“Why don’t they get rid of the other things that DON’T sell, like the VB scone or ginger cookie?” another user commented. “We can’t even keep the brownie on the shelf because people love it.”

“Brownies are classic, and this is just bad business,” one more Redditor said.

Starbucks

The Starbucks Double Chocolate Brownie is just one of 6 items on the ‘Treat’ section of their menu, which includes three cake pop flavors and two cookies. The brownie itself is described as “rich” with “generous chunks of semisweet chocolate.” It always makes a great mid-day treat with some strong coffee, so make sure grab it before it's gone if you're a sweet treat fanatic!

Once the Double Chocolate Brownie disappears from Starbucks menus in May, you can luckily still get a similar chocolate fix via the chain's Chocolate Cake Pop or Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Starbucks

Many more Starbucks employees and customers were quite sad to hear about the brownie’s disappearance:

“Noooo :( They keep getting rid of things I love!” one Redditor commented. “RIP the protein boxes, chocolate cookie crumble frappuccino, and now my beloved brownie.”

“But brownies and coffees together are elite? Poorest choice ever,” another user said.

“Not quite what was meant when people said Starbucks needed a smaller menu,” one person declared. “This is so dumb.”
