We don’t know about you, but with everything going on in our world post-election, we could TOTALLY use a dash of the warm and fuzzy right about now (subway therapy, anyone?). The Hallmark channel has cable-viewers covered, but Netflix is giving us a little holiday love too (above and beyond Gilmore Girls, which you should totally watch with your mom on Turkey Day). Check out the nine best holiday flicks you can stream this instant below!
1. Scrooged: Topping our list is Scrooged, the hilarious (if ever-so-slightly dated) 1988 retelling of Charles Dicken’s 1843 classic tale, A Christmas Carol. Businessman Bill Murray is a modern-day Ebenezer, firing staff members on Christmas Eve, shunning love in favor of success and being, well, an all-around grump. But that’s before the ghosts of Christmas past set him straight with a series of hijinks — toaster to the head, anyone? (Photo via Scrooged/Paramount Pictures)
2. White Christmas: Those longing for the classics (It’s a Wonderful Life, the original Miracle on 34th Street) will likely be sold on this 1954 musical about a group of entertainers that set out to save a failing lodge when it takes a hit due to the winter weather — or lack thereof. You can’t really go wrong with Bing Crosby, after all. (Photos via White Christmas/Paramount Pictures)
3. Love Actually: If you’re anything like us, you’ve seen Love Actually more times than you can count. And yet, each Christmas, you still feed oddly compelled to watch this modern-day favorite of interlocking story lines every. Single. Time it’s on. Is it the rush you feel when Sam finally tells (or rather shows) his crush Joanne how he feels by showing up to the airport she’s leaving from? Do you get the chills when Aurélia says yes to Colin Firth? Are you delighted by Hugh Grant’s perfect turn as British Prime minster? We may never be able to pinpoint the exact reason for our love of this film, but luckily we won’t need to, since it’s now streaming on Netflix to rediscover over and over again. 4. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe: If there’s any flick that can get us through — even dare we say, excited for — the winter months ahead, it’s this tale of four curious children that discover a fairy-tale world of ice and wonder inside an ordinary-looking cupboard. Despite the evil snow queen (Tilda Swinton) that runs it, Narnia offers visuals we can’t help but be stunned by. (Photo via Walt Disney Studios)
5. While You Were Sleeping: Just about everyone can relate to the devastating schoolgirl crush CTA worker Lucy has on her favorite commuter, but not everyone can relate to what happens next, when she saves his life and, finding herself in the wrong place at the wrong time whilst her beloved is in a coma, pretends to be his significant other to pacify his family over the holidays. Heartfelt and funny, this one’s an oldie, but a goodie. (Photo via Buena Vista)
6. Miracle on 34th Street: Mara Wilson might be all grown up and doling out advice about not being perfect nowadays, but back in 1994, she was just a little girl taking on the legendary role of Susan, the daughter of a department store’s special events director who comes face to face with Santa himself in the remake of Miracle on 34th Street. 7. 12 Dates of Christmas: In a nutshell, this ABC Family (now Freeform) original is like Groundhog Day for Christmas — except with Amy Smart and Saved by the Bell’s Zack Morris (er, we mean Mark-Paul Gosselaar) as its stars. (Photo via ABC Family)
8. Ernest Saves Christmas: If we can’t have National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at our fingertips (aw, rats!), this has to be the next best thing: Both have that campy, goofy quality and that old-school (1988) feel. The premise is simple enough — get a replacement for aging Santa— but with Ernest as the main character, shenanigans are bound to ensue, and they do. (Photo via Buena Vista)
9. Christmas With the Kranks: Starring Mr. Santa Clause himself, Tim Allen, and Dan Akroyd as a perturbed neighbor, this film about a family that decides to skip Christmas is the perfect lighthearted view to pop-in before you head off to mingle with your own (or your significant other’s) family.
