These Retro Pop Tarts Will Take You Back to the ’90s

What better way to celebrate National Dessert Day than a throwback to the ’90s with one of my favorite childhood snacks: Pop Tarts. When I think of the ’90s, the vibrant colors and patterns of retro fashion cross my mind; so I had to incorporate them into these sweet pops of delight. These easy-to-bake-and-decorate homemade Pop Tarts will brighten anyone’s day. You won’t even need to feel guilty because it’s National Dessert Day!

Ingredients:

For the Pop Tarts:

  • store-bought pie crust/pastry
  • filling of choice (e.g. Nutella, jam, etc.)
  • egg wash

For the glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • food coloring (in desired colors)

Instructions:
1.To make Pop Tarts:Line a baking tray with parchment paper, then using store-bought (or homemade) pie crust, roll and cut out rectangles with a pizza cutter or knife. If you’re using pastry sheets, you can skip the rolling part! Mine were approximately 4 x 2 inches, but you can make them as large or small as you like. Transfer rectangles onto the baking tray, evenly spaced out; then place in fridge to chill.

2.Roll and cut the rest of the pie crust into the same size rectangles. Remove previous tray from the fridge and place a spoonful of filling (I used a mixture of Nutella and Jam) in the center of each rectangle, spreading it out but leaving enough space around the edges for sealing. Place the extra rectangles on top of the filled ones, pressing the dough around the edges with your fingers, then sealing with a fork.

3.Using a fork or toothpick, poke holes on the top of the Pop Tarts. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes before baking.

4.Pre-heat oven to 350º Fahrenheit. Brush the tarts with egg wash, then bake for 25-30 minutes, or until they are a nice golden brown. Transfer onto a cooling rack to cool completely before decorating.

5. To decorate:Whisk confectioners sugar, milk and vanilla until nice and smooth. Add more milk for a thinner glazing consistency. Divide icing into 4-5 separate small bowls, depending on the number of colors you want to use. With a spoon, glaze the base colours of the Pop Tarts. You can use more than one color to create a more colorful and textured surface. Leave to dry for 10-15 minutes. Put the rest of the glazing in small piping bags and pipe on ’90s-inspired patterns.
