A Girl Named Ezra: 55 Boy Baby Names Becoming the New Girl Names

We all know about the once-male baby names like Madison and Addison, Harper and Alexis that have become popular girls’ names. Then there are the newer names crossing the gender divide toward the girls’ side. These may still be more widely used for boys, but have now moved into the Top 1000 for girls: Sawyer, Hunter, Ryan, Dallas, Royal and Ellis are the most notable.

More obscure than these, but way more newsworthy, are the boys’ names below the Top 1000 that are being used for sizable numbers of girls. We don’t mean word names like Rebel and Timber that are not intrinsically gendered or nicknames such as Billie and Joey that have long been used for girls or established unisex names such as Rowan or Robin. We’re talking about deeply traditional boys’ names that are being used, in many cases, for literally hundreds of baby girls.

In a few cases, there are powerful celebrity influences nudging these boys’ names girl-ward, such as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds naming their first daughter James or Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher naming their little girl Wyatt. We’ve starred the names that are being used more often for girls thanks to a celebrity.

Most fascinating are those gender-shifting names that have been traditionally used for boys since Biblical or Roman times… or at least since 1880 in the US. Some names in this group may be international choices that have not be widely used in the US until recently for either gender, but that are conventional male choices in their native cultures. These classically male names, with the number of girls who were given them in the US in 2015, include:

  • August, 242
  • Spencer, 237*
  • Ezra, 205
  • Tyler, 202

If you go below 20, you get lots of boys’ names given to a handful of girls: There were reportedly 18 baby girls named David in 2015, along with nine named Henry and five named Maximus and Oscar. But to give you an idea of how rare that is, there were the same number of baby girls named Maleficent and Ziyi.

So what does this mean, in the larger sense? We don’t foresee Ezra and James becoming the Addison and Madison of the future, or even advocate that parents of girls rush over to the boys’ list to find fresh and edgy names for their daughters. But the growing numbers behind this phenomenon are evidence that gender is becoming as fluid a concept with names as it is in other areas of life, and that’s a development we wholeheartedly support. But it will take parents naming their sons Sarah and Serena for us to achieve true gender parity.

If the 2017 parent was limited to only 100 possible baby names, what should they be? Which names strike that perfect balance of being supremely stylish but not trendy, distinctive yet not weird, creative yet down-to-earth?

I was already excited for Christopher Nolan's next epicafter hearing Tom Holland was involved — but then when we learned Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, and even more of our favorite stars were going to costar? I didn't know I could feel so much excitement. Universal recently revealed that the new movie will be an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. And after Gladiator 2, the ancient world has never been hotter.

Here's everything you need to know about Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey cast before the new movie sails into theaters July 17, 2026.

Meet 'The Odyssey' Movie Cast

www.tiktok.com

#greenscreen okay but let’s talk about this CAST🔥🔥🔥 #oppenheimer #theodyssey #annehathaway #annehathawayedit #zendaya #tomholland #zendayatomholland #robertpattinson #lupitanyongo #christophernolan

Matt Damon

Matt Damon is known for roles in Good Will Hunting and Jason Bourne, and he just starred in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Tom Holland

In addition to the Spider-Man films, Tom Holland recently starred in The Crowded Room and Cherry, both on Apple TV.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway had a great 2024 with The Idea of You, and we'll see The Princess Diaries actress in Colleen Hoover's Verity movie soon!

Zendaya

We saw Zendaya in Dune 2 and Challengers last year, and in addition to joining The Odyssey cast, she'll return as Rue in Euphoria season 3.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong'o totally made us cry during The Wild Robot and A Quiet Place: Day One, and she'll probably do the same in The Odyssey TBH.

Robert Pattinson

Mickey17 and The Batman Part II are two of Robert Pattinson's upcoming movies, in addition to another job with Zendaya called The Drama.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron recently starred in FastX as well as Netflix's The School for Good and Evil and Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Who does Tom Holland play in The Odyssey?

While we have The Odyssey cast list, we haven't gotten confirmation on which roles the actors are playing...yet. (Although to be fair, we also don't know if this will be a classic adaptation or a reimagining). However, fans are already speculating who we'll see in each role!

I'd love for Robert Pattinson to star as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Zendaya would be amazing as Athena, while Lupita Nyong'o would definitely stun as Circe. Who knows — maybe we'll see some unexpected casting choices too! Charlize Theron as Zeus and Matt Damon as Poseidon? Yes please.

Who is the villain in The Odyssey?

There's more than one villain in The Odyssey, but one role that definitely stands out is Poseidon. The sea god does everything he can to prevent Odysseus from returning to Ithaca during his sea voyage. TLDR; this definitely isn't your average vacation cruise.

Since May, name enthusiasts around the world have been pouring over the Social Security Administration’s list of the most popular names for 2015. Though the high-ranking boy’s names from last year are mostly classic, timeless choices, a few new trends have emerged. In recent years we’ve seen cool names ending in –s, like Silas and Elias, rise for the guys. We’ve also seen an upswing in lively “o” ending names like Milo and Leo. We’ve also taken notice of another trend: Names that end in “i” are increasingly being used for boys. From Eli to Kenji, there’s a lot of variety in “i”-ending baby names to explore!

1. Levi: Levi is the most popular boys name right now ending in the letter “i.” Currently ranked at number 42, Levi is up over 100 spots in the last 10 years. Levi is a Biblical name with a cool cowboy edge, in part due to the Levi Strauss jeans association. Sheryl Crow and Matthew McConaughey both used this cool name for their sons.

2. Eli: Eli comes in next, ranking at number 53 in popularity. Eli is a Hebrew name meaning ascended. While popular on its own, Eli is also commonly used as a nickname for Elijah and Elias, both of which are also in the top 100. A few other cool names leading to the nickname Eli include Elia, Elio, Elian, Eleazer and Elisha.

3. Giovanni: Giovanni is the classic Italian form of John, meaning God is gracious. Giovanni comes in at number 130, making it a usable and familiar but not overly heard name in the US. Giovanni easily pairs with the Italian names for girls like Isabella, which is still topping the charts. Fashion designer Gianni Versace’s full given name was Giovanni.

4. Kai: Kai is definitely a name to watch, having climbed 60 spots in the last five years. Currently ranked at 145 for boys, Kai is also number 895 for girls. In addition to its cool sound, Kai is used in several different cultures and therefore has many meanings. The Hawaiian meaning is sea.

5. Malachi: Malachi is a Hebrew name meaning my messenger. Malachi re-entered the top 1,000 in 1987 at number 992 and currently ranks at number 162. There are numerous Malachi’s in film and literature, including the evil Malachi Boardman in Children of the Corn.

6. Bodhi: Bodhi first entered the charts in 2010 and quickly rose in popularity. Bodhi is currently the most popular it has ever been, at number 499. Bodhi is a tree name and a Sanskrit name meaning awakening and enlightenment and has become a celebrity fave, used by Oliver Hudson, Amy Brenneman and Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green, among others.

7. Esai: Esai is a Spanish name possibly derived from Esau or Esaias. Actor Esai Morales, who pronounces his name EE-sye, helped introduce many people to this great name. Esai has never been in the Top 1,000.

8. Dimitri: Dimitri is a Russian form of the Greek name Demetrius, meaning follower of Demeter. Dimitri has never been too popular in the US, peaking in 1992 when it reached number 502. Today Dimitri ranks at 905 for boys, having made an appearance in the Twilight saga. It is also spelled Dmitri and Dhimitri.

9. Kenji: Kenji is a Japanese name meaning second son. Kenji Kishimoto is one of the lead characters in Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me book series.

10. Nikolai: Nikolai peaked last year at number 478, the most popular it has ever ranked. Nikolai is one of the many attractive forms of the name Nicholas, meaning people of victory. It has been worn by important Russian cultural figures such as writer Gogol and composer Rimsky-Korsakov.

Emma Stone made waves when she showed up to the A Real Pain premiere in September with a wig (fans are convinced she shaved her head for Yorgos Lanthimos' new movie Bugonia) — but she made an even bigger statement when she showed up to the 2025 Golden Globes with a chic new pixie cut! The bold hair choice is equal parts chic and edgy, and basically confirms 2025 will be a year of vintage style. I'm totally here for it!

Keep reading to see Emma Stone's brand "nutmeg" new pixie cut.

Emma Stone rocked a chic new hairstyle on the Golden Globes red carpet.

Emma Stone paired her new 'do with a strapless, bright red, custom Louis Vuitton dress, complete with a belt featuring a bow detail. Considering red was THE color of 2024, I think this was the perfect shade to welcome the new year, and it complements her auburn hair and natural lip super nicely!

"Emma Stone’s gorgeous Nutmeg Pixie! 💃We wanted to keep her natural and close to her own color, and just like natural hair, cameras and lighting will change how its photographed," hairstylist Tracey Cunningham says on Instagram. "I glossed her with @schwarzkopfusa vibrance allover 8-0/10 + 7-55/10 + 7-57/10 + 9-7/10 with 6 vol for 20 mins and then on top I layered another gloss 0-77+0-55+0-77 with 6 vol for 5 mins. And afterwards she washed it out to with @olaplex No 4 and No 5!"

Emma Stone reportedly shaved her head for her new movie.

At the premiere of A Real Pain, Emma Stone showed off the edge of her wig to Kieran Culkin's wife Jazz Charton, but it's not the first time in 2024 Emma's hair (or lack thereof) was the center of attention.

The actress was seen walking around London in August of 2024 with a beanie hiding her buzzcut, and all the secrecy has really got me wondering — will her hair in the movie be a totally new color? Or will it feature funky patterns? Only time will tell.

What kind of hair does Emma Stone have?

Despite being known for her red hair, Emma Stone is actually a natural blonde. "Weirdly, I identify myself with
red hair a bit more," she told Elle Canada in 2013. "I felt like myself for a while when I first dyed it blond, but the grass is always greener, you know? – or always redder or blonder on the other side...Studios are paying to change it, so it’s a fantasy to have all these different hair colours."

“When I dyed my hair red again, my best friend since I was 11 walked into my apartment and said, ‘You know, you look funnier as a redhead — you looked like such a b—ch when you were blonde,’” Emma joked in a 2011 interview with NJ.com.

What do you think of Emma Stone's new pixie cut? It wasn't the only memorable moment from the awards show, either. Demi Moore's acceptance speech brought us to tears and Zendaya showed off her new engagement ring! 2025 is already off to a very good start.
