This Is Why Adults Take Young Girls’ Pain Less Seriously Than Boys’

Any former little girls who felt that their brothers or the boys in class got far more attention when they reported being in pain will feel vindicated (and annoyed) by the findings of a new study. Conducted at Yale University, the study found that adults are more likely to believe boys’ expression of pain than girls’. Here are the details, and the potential repercussions.

What the study found

Published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology in January 2019, this study is a repeat of another study that was published in 2014. In both, researchers showed a group of adults an identical video of a child receiving a finger stick blood test. Half the adults were told the child was a boy, and the other half were told the child was a girl. They were all asked to rate how much pain the child was in, and how far they agreed with certain stereotypes about the levels to which girls and boys experience pain. Adults who believed they were watching a boy rated him as being in more pain than adults who thought the subject was a girl — even though they were watching the same video. When the researchers took into account the self-admitted gender stereotypes, the effect vanished, which suggests it was these stereotypes that caused their responses.

“The findings of this study are fascinating but not necessarily surprising,” says Cordelia Carter, MD, director of the Pediatric Sports Medicine Center at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, who has researched how sex and gender affect health outcomes for young athletes. “I think that how children are taught to act — and how we as adults expect them to act — based upon their perceived gender has far-reaching implications for how we diagnose and manage pain.”

What are the repercussions?

Unfortunately, this bias against women doesn’t end with childhood. “This type of treatment most definitely continues into adulthood,” asserts Talin Evazyan, MD, clinical assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, who primarily treats women, particularly those with undiagnosed pelvic pain. “I see a lot of women in my practice who have had pelvic pain and headaches that have gone untreated and undiagnosed for many years because doctors assumed these were a normal experience of the female development, when in fact pain almost always has an organic source and root cause that can be managed or treated. A lot of ‘’female’ diseases are much less represented in the research community, and historically there has been less funding for disease processes that mostly affect females.”

Speaking of people who are left out of research, it’s worth noting that this study focuses on cisgender children identified specifically as male or female: Transgender and non-binary kids face biases that aren’t even being looked at. “There is a real dearth of data on transgender and non-binary children, and we are still figuring out best practices for taking care of this population of patients,” Dr. Carter explains. “I have not personally seen differences in care provided in this setting, but the real challenge is that there aren’t large numbers of children to study. This is likely the subject of active and ongoing research, but I am not aware of existing data on differences in care provided for this population.”

What happens next?

While the results aren’t exactly good news, Dr. Carter says that the fact these two studies happened in the first place shows that researchers are starting to pay more attention to gender disparities in pain treatments. “Seeing more and more studies that critically evaluate gender and sex differences tells me we are getting closer to improving care for all children,” she enthuses. That said, she thinks there is some way to go. ”This is still the beginning of the discussion. The more data we have that demonstrate sex- and gender-based differences in medicine, the easier it will be to marshal a strong argument for physicians to understand that an individual child’s gender may play a role in how he or she is treated, and that the optimal treatment might be different depending on his or her gender.”

Dr. Evazyan echoes this cautious optimism, adding, “Culture takes a long time to catch up to bias.” In terms of the medical community specifically, she says, “Empathy for all is implicit in the altruistic goals of the physician in training.” Doctors sometimes need to consider a person’s sex or gender when looking for the best way to treat them — but empathy should always be a part of treatment. However, she also acknowledges that, “As far as looking inward to our own bias in training, I would say the medical community could do a better job of discussing this and how it affects patient care.”

In the meantime, there are tools everyone can use to check their biases. “There is a terrific website called Project Implicit [run by Harvard University] that allows any individual to evaluate his or her implicit bias about all sorts of different patient or person-specific factors, including sex and gender,” Dr. Carter recommends. And in medicine, in particular, she says, “Many medical societies have committees dedicated to educating their members about the importance of diversity and understanding and addressing implicit biases because we know that this will allow us to take better care of our patients.” We’re not exactly happy to hear that girls really are believed less than boys when it comes to something as important as pain, but having studies explicitly identify cases of discrimination will hopefully make people within and outside the medical community more aware of how their perception of other people’s genders might affect the way they treat them.

In July 2017, a source seemingly confirmed what many fans had been wondering for months: that Tom Holland and Zendaya had been dating. Considering the two other sets of Spider-Man leads (Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield) both dated, it felt like this was one relationship that was bound to happen.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," the insider tells People. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

While not every girlfriend necessarily wants a bouquet, every couple definitely has to figure out each other's love languages so they can get to know each other better — and apparently A-listers are the exact same!

After going sober in 2022, Tom Holland announced on October 15 he was launching a non-alcoholic drink company called Bero. “When I got sober, I started exploring the world of non-alcoholic beers and realized there was space for me to fit in,” Tom says in an interview with Forbes. “My first year sober was really difficult, and had I had Bero, I think it would have been easier.”

“Zendaya hates beer, like, absolutely hates beer," he continues. And when she helped with the taste testing, a joke helped guide the overall brand. "She does not drink beer at all, and the first round of testing she was like, ‘Wow, these are really tasty’, and I was like, ‘Well, that's probably not a good sign.'"

After fans have been VERY loud about the supposed cast drama, Carlacia Grant (Cleo) made me laugh out loud when she posted her OBX 4 Instagram post — and seemingly called fans out in the comments. The roundup includes cast group pictures, a snap of Drew Starkey, and Morocco, and she captioned the post, "If I drop these are y’all gonna act right?"

Before long, the Instagram drama continued to unfold, and one cast member was the first to unfollow Rudy: Madelyn Cline. Needless to say, I'm shocked.

Why aren't Rudy and Madison friends anymore?

Rudy Pankow and Madison Bailey were best friends during season 1 (Madison called Rudy her "bestie," and said that in any situation, "he's the first person I'm going to call"). But rumors of a fallout came after the show went viral in 2020. Fans picked up on their onscreen chemistry and started shipping the actors in addition to shipping their characters JJ and Kiara (the internet shipped the fictional couple so hard, in fact, that the relationship was written into the show despite it not being the team's original plan).

"Madison and Kiara, and Rudy and JJ, are two different people," Madison said in a 2020 Entertainment Tonight interview after the relationship started picking up steam. "Let's keep the ships on the show. But as far as the show, I'm all for it."

After publicity for Outer Banks season 2 began, fans noticed Rudy and Madison didn't seem to have the same connection in public, and even appeared to avoid each other on set — a far cry from their adorable interactions during press for season 1.

Fans started outright blaming Rudy's girlfriend Elaine Seimek, who was originally a PA on the show, for causing a rift between the two actors. Madison herself shut down the rumors with a TikTok promising they all had no problems, while Rudy Pankow took to Instagram to defend his girlfriend.

"To those who are creating such displeasure and opinions about the one I love and my relationship, it’s time to stop," Rudy Pankow said in an August 6, 2021 post. "I want to express the importance to spread positivity and needing to know when it is unfair to express your own distaste for something or someone, especially when you can do it behind an anonymous identity. I was always told the best version of yourself is your most humbled self…I make this statement as my most humbled self and would be so grateful if we all would move forward in positivity and respect."

The Outer Banks cast drama rumors only intensified after a June 2023 dinner, when Madison Bailey and her partner Mariah Linney reportedly unfollowed Elaine on Instagram. Not to mention the fact Rudy Pankow isn't in any of the Outer Banks season 4 cast videos.

After JJ's death rocked the internet, creators Josh and Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke said that it was always the plan to kill JJ. "For a long time we had known that someone was going to die," showrunner Shannon Burke told Teen Vogue. "We thought it was going to be JJ all along."

However, the fact that JJ and Kiara have been dating for almost 2 years at this point, yet barely react to the other heading into danger has fans thinking Rudy asked to leave the show. And rumors that they filmed multiple endings to give Rudy the option to stay only adds fuel to the fire.

When new episodes of the show dropped in November of 2024, fans almost immediately clocked that Rudy and Madison appear to have used body doubles for a cuddling scene — while Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes (who dated from June 2020 to November 2021) were cozied up across the campfire.

Even though an anonymous source suggested Rudy and Madison aren't friends anymore, and that their chemistry onscreen in season 1 was because they'd fallen for each other IRL, a source told People the actors are not feuding.

But one DeuxMoi source just spilled some serious tea, telling the site that, "Rudy asked them to write him off because of the drama! Production got mad and they had to refilm episodes," they said. "They filmed episode 10 before the last episodes of the first half & Rudy didn't tell the cast so it threw them off. In the last episode you can see how mad everyone was at Rudy. It's a mess and it pissed off production but they are going to brush it off like it's ‘always been the plan.’”

They also revealed that apparently, the plan was to kill JJ off in the series finale, which honestly kind of makes sense.

When did Madison Bailey and Rudy Pankow meet?

Rudy and Madison first met after Rudy had booked the role of JJ and Madison was headed to a final audition. Despite the fact they had mutual friends, they didn't meet until they were on the same plane to Charleston. She told Harper's Bazaar in 2020 that she said hello when they crossed paths, then found a DM from him on social media. “He was like, ‘I knew you were Kiara the second I saw you,’" she said. "I was like, "Oh my God, did this guy three seats up really just DM me?’ He went and found our mutuals, found my page, and messaged me.”

Well, during press for Outer Banks season 4, when the cast was asked who would be most likely to fall in love with a stranger on a plane, Carlacia Grant (Cleo) answered with Madison, leading fans to believe she was confirming the romance rumors.

Rudy Pankow exited Outer Banks after season 4, and Madison Bailey finally spoke about what JJ means to her in the cast's official goodbye — and got emotional talking about how well Rudy brought the character to life.

"We all read the character on the page," she says. "And we know what you brought to it and you turned it out and really made something of it and paid respect to the depth of the character while bringing a lightheartedness that the show desperately needed."

My Facebook bio reads "I have a Narnia quote for every occasion," and the sentiment rings true. The hope and wonder found inside The Chronicles of Narnia played a huge role in shaping who I am as a writer and as a human. I'm a part of a Facebook group and keep up with some online forums, which means that I can spot clickbait or a fake poster from a mile away.

After Netflix acquired the rights to The Chronicles of Narnia in 2018, I was on the edge of my seat to see who would be involved. So, as you can imagine, when it was finally confirmed Greta Gerwig (who directed 2019's Little Women, the other story that has heavily influenced my life) would write and direct the next two movies in the Narnia universe, I told everyone.

Although the books are no stranger to controversy, I'm confident Greta Gerwig will handle them with grace and tact because she has a knack for bringing stories into the 21st century while still feeling true to their original heart.

We haven't gotten an official confirmation that Joseph Quinn is joining the Narnia movies, but near the end of a Vanity Fair game with his Gladiator 2 costars, Fred Hechinger guesses Joe's favorite movie franchise is Narnia — and everyone immediately starts acting suspicious. Making faces at each other, getting quiet, and being super awkward is not the way to act inconspicuous, you guys. It definitely reminds me of the Outer Banks cast trying not to spoil the OBX 4 ending, which doesn't help the situation.

Who else could be in Greta Gerwig's Narnia cast?

After a reunion with Brie Larson at the 2024 Golden Globes (they starred in 2010's Greenberg together), X users are hoping the Oscar winner will make an appearance! "She need to get in Narnia somehow," one user said when they retweeted a video of the reunion. The reunion in question features Brie hopping like a bunny over to Greta, who squeals as they hug. That's exactly how I greet my friends IRL.

"When [Brie Larson] gets the Best Supporting Actress nomination for playing the White Witch, wait," one user added.

Saoirse Ronan told The Wrap at the Sundance Film Festival that she's already asked to be in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies! The actress played the lead in two of Greta's films: Jo March in Little Women and the titular character in Ladybird. "We have that kind of relationship where I’m like 'So I’ll be in the next one!,'" she says. The actress also told The LA Times that "if [Greta] asks me, I’ll be in it."

However, it looks like we do have an idea of who we won't see in the cast. OG Narnia cast member William Moseley (Peter Pevensie) told Bleeding Cool he doesn't expect a call from Greta Gerwig: "I’m not part of that world anymore, which sometimes makes me sad because I love the world of Narnia and becoming a part of it."

"In terms of what I think about Greta Gerwig directing, I think she’s incredible," he continues. "Barbie was an amazing movie, and Little Woman was brilliant. Everything she touches turns gold, so I think Netflix is lucky to have her, and I’m sure she will embrace the challenge. I hope she enjoys it because it’s an incredible world to create, and I can’t wait to see what she produces."

Which Narnia story is Greta Gerwig adapting?

The specific Narnia movies the writer-director's making haven't been named, but a TIME interview claims Greta's adapting "the first book" in the series. The only hiccup is that they don't confirm whether they mean the first book chronologically (The Magician's Nephew) or the first book C.S. Lewis published (The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe). I'm thinking it'll be The Magician's Nephew since we've never seen that story onscreen.

“[The films] won’t be counter to how the audience may have imagined those worlds,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos tells TIME, “but it will be bigger and bolder than they thought.”

While we don't have official confirmation on which movie Greta Gerwig is adapting, we know she wants it to have even more of an impact than Barbie. "I want to make it feel like magic," she says. “C.S. Lewis said that the goal of writing fantasy — you know, something from his imagination — he’d say, let’s say you wrote about an enchanted forest. The goal would be that then every time you walk into a forest after you read it, you’d say to yourself, ‘maybe this is an enchanted forest.’ So that’s a tall order, but I guess re-enchantment of the world [is my goal].”

It looks like we can expect to come away from Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia movies with even more love for the world, more childlike wonder, and more courage and kindness towards each other — and I am totally here for it.

How long has Greta Gerwig wanted to make a Chronicles of Narnia movie?

Like the intentional planner she is, Greta Gerwig actually thought about directing a Narnia movie way before her involvement was ever confirmed. "I would say the land of Narnia is equally exciting and terrifying," she says on The Empire Film Podcast. "I have nothing really to report on it other than it’s something I was actually talking about before I made Barbie. So, that’s been sort of in my unconscious working its way through. But that has been a pattern. I wrote a draft of Little Women before I made Lady Bird."

Narnia, Little Women, Barbie — Greta Gerwig has a knack for turning our beloved childhood stories into something complex and emotional that resonates with us even more as adults!

“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia,” Greta tells BBC Radio 4. “I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by."

"As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly," she continues. "It’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”

Are these new The Chronicles of Narnia movies a continuation or a reboot?

We don't have any info yet on whether this adaptation will pick up where The Voyage of the Dawn Treader left off, whether it will be a remake of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, or if it will be a totally new story within the Narnia universe (similar to Prime Video's The Rings of Power).

I'm personally anticipating that it will be the first option because I would love to see Greta bring something like The Magician's Nephew (which has never been adapted) to life onscreen.

The Chronicles of Narnia revolves around the fictional land of Narnia, and the children in our world who find it. Time passes differently in Narnia than it does on earth, which means that even though around 50 years pass for the characters, they find themselves in a different decade or century every time they reenter the magical land.

Each book has themes like good vs. evil, family, and identity as the characters face different challenges and adventures. The coolest thing about these books is how open-ended C.S. Lewis wrote them — because your own personal experiences, life lessons, and worldview impact your imagination, you have a different experience every time you read them.

“It’s connected to the folklore and fairy stories of England, but it’s a combination of different traditions,” Greta Gerwig tells TIME. “As a child, you accept the whole thing—that you’re in this land of Narnia, there’s fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up. This Insane 'Wicked: Part Two' Theory Changes Everything

As a theater kid and movie fanatic, I simply cannot stop singing the Wicked soundtrack, checking out all the new Mattel dolls, and re-watching the Wicked trailer. And I absolutely wore Glinda's signature pink when the Wicked movie flew into theaters November 22. But while this was definitely the movie event of the year, it's only part one of the story.

Just like the Broadway musical is split into two acts, Wicked is going to be in two parts. But good news Ozians: the Wicked: Part 2release date just got bumped up!

Is Dorothy in Wicked: Part 2?

Any fan of the musical knows that Wicked features moments from The Wizard of Oz, and during part 1, you can see Dorothy walking to the Emerald City with the scarecrow, cowardly lion, and tin man. But one theory suggests we'll actually get to know Dorothy for one very good reason: a new Wizard of Oz movie is coming.

"Considering we’re having so much Wicked excitement how would you feel about the thought of Universal actually making a Wizard of Oz remake retelling with the themes of Wicked we already know," one Reddit user asks. "Sorta like now is having sympathy towards the wicked witch now, and maybe going in extremely similar way to the original Wizard of Oz but clearly taking a new turn to it with our new pov of the characters."

Plus, director Jon M. Chu teased that we'll see even more of her than we have before! “In movie 1, it was important to let Dorothy be how you want her to be. I didn't want to step on your images of whatever version of Dorothy you wanted her to be,” he tells ScreenRant. “But the presence is important because that plays a significant role in what will happen and how they intersect...But you'll have to see movie 2 to know how far we go with her.”

Act II of the musical is all about Oz's response to Elphaba becoming the "Wicked Witch of the West." Glinda becomes beloved public figure "Glinda the Good," but realizes just how much her dreams have cost her as Elphaba is gone and Fiyero, now Glinda's fiancé, is determined to find Elphaba no matter the cost.

Wicked: Part Two will feature songs like "As Long As You're Mine," "No Good Deed," and "For Good" (as well as some new ones) — and Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey are going to absolutely slay.

Jon M. Chu told Entertainment Weekly that part 2 is all about "consequences," and how lonely it can be after you make an important choice like we see Elphie make in part 1. "Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn't what you expect it to be," he says. "There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2. They're asking, 'Is this the right decision that you made?'"

And even though Act II of the musical is pretty dark, Jon promises movie 2 will feature some of the same lightheartedness we saw in movie 1. "There is lots of lightness in the movie," he continues. "There's a lot of fun parts. We've not forgotten about that, but there's a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity]."

The Wicked movie has had a long road to get to its release! News of the movie adaptation originally broke in 2016, with an intended release date of 2019. But the COVID-19 pandemic, and a few behind-the-scenes details, pushed the movie to 2024 instead.

"As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it," director Jon M. Chu tweeted in April of 2022, announcing the story would arrive in two installments.

"With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters."

Did they finish filming Wicked Part 2?

The good news is that, even though we have to wait a year to see Wicked: Part Two, filming is already done! On January 26, Cynthia Erivo shared a breathtaking photo of her silhouette as Elphaba flying on a broom. "I’ve been trying to think of what I’d say when this day finally came, and I’m failing miserably, because honestly there aren’t enough words to fully express what this experience has meant to me," she says on Instagram.

"The universe will take things away to make space for the grand gifts it has waiting for us," she continues. "THIS moment, this film, these people, this cast, this crew, this director, my Glinda, were the Grandest gift I could ever have asked for, and I am eternally grateful for the chance to bring you This Elphie.
