How to Date Someone Who Has a Very Different Lifestyle Than Yours

Eileen is a Korean-American photographer who lives in Paris with her boyfriend, a French native. Aside from cultural and familial divides, the pair — on paper — seem to have very little common. Professionally, the couple also lead very different lives. “I’m freelance so I can organize my day however I want to. I can take a vacation in the middle of the week,” Eileen says. “He has a classic office job, a nine-to-seven type of profession. It was really hard for him to understand why I didn’t work on some days, and he saw it as laziness at first.”

Opposites have been attracting through the ages: the introvert and the extrovert, the artist and the logician, the world traveler and the homebody. As French-Swiss author and political thinker Madame de Staël once said, “In matters of the heart, nothing is true except the improbable.” In the early, electric stages of getting to know someone, these differences can be enticing, but all too often, these same lifestyle differences can end up driving a couple apart.

According to Rachel A. Sussman, a New York City-based licensed psychotherapist who specializes in relationship counseling, “Research does show that the more a couple has in common, the greater the probability that the relationship is going to work out. Yet, I’ve seen couples who are opposites handle it really well.” She is quick to add, “I’ve also seen couples who are opposites handle it really poorly.” However, there are ways in which two very different people can mitigate the divide and actually find happiness.

1. Accept who they are. “The most important thing is, you’re not going to change your partner,” Sussman says. “And you should not get into a relationship to try to change someone.” In the example of the creative and the stable office worker she says, “Obviously there are things that you admire and like about each other off the bat. Now, when things go wrong, the [office worker] will say to the artist, ‘You’re not starting work until five o’clock tonight? What are you doing all day?’ and maybe shame them about how they handle their finances. That’s when it becomes a problem and when I get called in.”

2. Show respect. “The couples that handle it well keep a respect for each other’s lifestyle choices,” Sussman says. And having a sense of humor about your differences helps — however, one that is always respectful and never mean-spirited.

3. Maintain interest. Acceptance doesn’t mean your disparities become trivial or no longer require attention; rather, they become an ongoing opportunity to learn about and from one another. “If it’s going to work, you’ve got to keep that dynamic of having an interest and curiosity about the other person as opposed to looking at it as a problem,” Sussman says.

4. Find common ground. When conflicts arise, it’s important to remember what you do share. For couples who seek her services, Sussman says, “I try to get them to focus on what they have in common first. Make a list of what you have in common and is working for you.” Sussman also suggests making a separate list of what isn’t working, and while you and your partner are hashing out those issues, also taking some time for self-examination. “Ask yourself, ‘Why is that a problem?'”

5. Don’t accuse. “Listen, don’t be defensive. If you want to bring up something about your partner’s lifestyle that’s bothering you,” she tells us, “bring it up in a non-judgmental way, and don’t accuse them.” A good tool to utilize during these uncomfortable discussions is what Sussman calls “I”-statements such as “I feel,” “I’m worried,” or “I’m concerned.” And if these disagreements get heated, as they often do, don’t be afraid to cool off and revisit later. “You can say, ‘This isn’t going well. Why don’t we take a step back and both think about what we’ve said to each other, and let’s talk tomorrow,'” she suggests. Writing a letter to one another can also be a great method to communicate your points if talking is hard. However, Sussman cautions that the letter should be motivated by finding a solution rather than used as a self-serving tool to double-down on your argument.

6. Have empathy. You have to understand and empathize with your partner’s limitations.A common issue Sussman sees in her office is when an introvert is dating an extrovert, and it sometimes results in a clash over just how much socializing is too much or not enough. “Introverts charge their batteries by staying at home, and extroverts charge their batteries by interacting with other people, and it’s very important for them to remember that,” Sussman says. “Some introverts also have social anxiety, so you have to have compassion for each other’s position.”

7. Set rules. It also helps for two people to lay out ground rules that both feel comfortable adhering to. For example, the introvert will accompany the extrovert to two large group socializations a month, and the extrovert won’t push their partner for more. In another example, the artist will respect their partner’s sleeping schedule by maintaining set quiet hours, and the office worker won’t make comments about the artist’s schedule.

8. Know your partner will evolve over time. “You are supposed to change over time. That’s a good thing, but that being said, relationships can get in trouble over that,” Sussman says. “I’ve had a lot of couples say to me, ‘He or she is not the same person as when I met him or her 10 years ago,’ and what I always say is, ‘Well, you’re not supposed to be the person you were 10 years ago. But do you have what it takes to work through this?’ And again, it’s can you have empathy and compassion for each other’s positions? Can you put yourselves in each other’s shoes?”

As for Eileen, the creative, and her corporate job-holding boyfriend, despite their differences, they’re staying the course. “I think the key to being in a relationship with someone so different from you is constant communication,” she says. “Trying to help the other see it from your perspective and vice versa.”

Millie Bobby Brown's name has been on everyone's lips between the premiere of TheElectric State and shutting down negative comments from body shamers. Plus, she's still been reveling in the new marriage glow with her husband Jake Bongiovi, and she didn't mind revealing why she didn't let age stop her from becoming his wife "so young." Her appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddypodcast left us buzzing with newfound respect for the actress because her charm and levelheadedness about her marriage confidently says, "I'm secure with my relationship status — are you?"

Listening to Alex Cooper's interview with Millie Bobby Brown was like hearing two besties catch up which is why Call Her Daddy is one of the best podcasts ever. They covered topics such as Millie's life as a child actor, her life with "25 farm animals," and her marriage!

Knowing what fans and listeners alike are curious about, Alex asked about the turning point in Millie and Jake's relationship that signaled the actress had found her forever person. "We're been together for four years, so I guess maybe when we moved in together," Mille said.

She also said, "We had dogs together, and we were taking care of our animals, and we started living this day-to-day life, and I thought, ‘Oh, I really don’t think I could ever see you as anything else. I don’t want to be with anyone else ever again. I don’t want to date, I don’t want to meet anyone, I want you.'"

To prove she wasn't looking at their relationship with rose-colored glasses on, Millie recalled things she and Jake aligned on. "When we started talking about politics and how we want to raise our kids...we started talking about really, really big things that I’d obviously never spoken about...But to be able to even think about those things, I was like, ‘S---. Okay, maybe I do want to be with him forever.'"

But she didn't know if Jake was thinking about her or marriage the way she was. "We talked about marriage, but I didn’t really know when it was going to be. And then, when he proposed, I was like, it makes sense. Everything aligned.”

Concerning their age, Millie opened up about her and Jake's parents. She said, "His parents got married really young — they’re high school sweethearts," before sharing her "parents got married really young...they were 19."

For the lovebirds, it didn't seem like an odd thing to do based on the examples they had. "We had really great role models growing up, so we didn't see any different. We didn't get jaded by all the other stuff, you know?”

e.l.f. No Budge Retractable Eyeliner

This is by far the best drugstore eyeliner out there. Designed with a convenient retractable (no-sharpen!) tip, it's super easy to take on the go for any touch-ups. Plus, the color payoff and wearability of each shade is insanely impressive.

Amazon

If you're looking for an eyeliner that, no matter the circumstances, does not budge, this $5 is the perfect pick-me-up. You can find it in a handful of different colors to suit your makeup needs.

Promising review: "I can’t believe I’ve been trying to make felt tipped eyeliners work for so long. Usually I put on felt tipped eye liner and it barely shows up, maybe my eye lids are watery or oily. So naturally within a hour or two it doesn’t even look like I’ve put on eye liner. This is not the case with this elf eye cream retractable liner. It actually shows up right away, it also lasts for hours. Even after 8 hours there was still some on my eyes, although I did need to re apply in some spots. It also didn’t smudge. For it to last at all and not smudge is amazing for me."

Amazon

Nivea Body, Face, & Hand Moisturizing Cream

Though some people may see this $10 tinned cream as truly "old school,"many others still hold it near and dear for its ability to moisturize and heal dry skin in need of nourishment.

Amazon

The thick, non-greasy formula is chockfull of provitamin B5 that really sinks deep into the skin. The best part is it's really gentle, so you can use it on your face, body, and hands.

Promising review: "Nivea is a great product. My parents always had a tin of it around. I've continued the tradition. It is a wonderful thick cream that moisturizes well. Great value for the price, as a little goes a long way. Softens rough skin."

Amazon

Versed Sweet Relief Night Mask + Face Balm

B+C Affiliate Writer, Meredith, truly cannot get enough of this stuff from Versed. It's a thick, moisturizing face balm that really nails down the 'slugging' skincare trend without totally swamping your skin. It is fairly oily and shiny after one application, so she recommends using it only at night – and you'll wake up with a glowy complexion!

Amazon

Its $10 (was $18) formula is loaded up with bacuri and kokum butters and apricot kernel oil that are all dedicated to protecting the skin barrier. Though these ingredients may sound intimidating, the product is still wonderfully gentle overall for any skin type.

Promising review: "I have very sensitive skin and LOVE this as an overnight moisturizer. It's thick but a little goes a long way. The winter where I live is very dry. I use it every night before bed, my skin feels great in the morning! It's neutral smelling but I prefer that."

Amazon

Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo

This $7 (was $10) shampoo will set all your hair growth goals so right. Amazon

e.l.f. Cosmetics Glossy Lip Stain

This $6 (yes, $6!) lip stain is unlike most lip stains in the way that it boasts a fun, glossy formula. Where some leave-on lip stains may dry up and make your lips look crusty AF (hate that), this one nourishes your pout, all the while leaving a nice wash of color behind.

Amazon

This e.l.f. product stole the heart of B+C Affiliate Writer, Meredith, for its natural look, comfortable wear, and undeniable affordability. Its low price of $6 makes it so easy to try out the lip stain trend without going all-in! There are also so many shades to pick from, so you're sure to find one that suits you perfectly.

Promising review: "This was the first time buying any thing that was being called a lip stain. I didn’t want to spend a lot since I wasn’t sure if I would like them or if they worked the way people said they did. This goes on very easy and I have only used it a few times now, but it did last for a number of hours and did not come off when I ate or drink anything. I have thinner lips, but I like at this at least helps them show up more and when I don’t want to wear a lot of color, this is a soft neutral."

Amazon

Method Pure Peace Body Wash

This $8 body wash smells like heaven, truly. With notes of peony, rose water, and pink sea salt, it's perfectly feminine and clean and feels like a total treat in the shower or bath. Though fragranced, it's still gentle on the skin and provides a good amount of moisture after each use!

Amazon

This body wash from Method also boasts a unique biodegradable formula made with plant-based cleansers that contains zero parabens or phthalates to ensure healthy skin 24/7.

Promising review: "I was hesitant to buy this as I was not sure about how the scent would be. I am pleasantly surprised.
It has a simple rose smell, but it's mild and lacks that perfumey, cloying sort of smell that can happen with floral scents. Very simple, like I'm rubbing roses on myself. Not super strong, it lingers but doesn't feel like it's following you around all day either."

Amazon

Essence Lash Princess Mascara

This $5 mascara definitely doesn't feel like it's $5. It undeniably volumizes and lengthens your lashes in a few simple swipes, all without those pesky clumps you might expect from a more affordable product.

Amazon

The brush itself features an easy-to-use conic shape that lets you access the entirety of your lashes for a cohesive look, too!

Promising review: "What a little hidden gem this is. I first saw this on a you tube video and decided to try it. The bottle is adorable, but the contents will blow you away. It's probably the best mascara or one of the best that I have ever used. It was very inexpensive so even though the woman on the you tube video was saying how great it was, I wasn't expecting it to be all that great, but was still curious. I'm really glad I bought it, because it is the best mascara from a company no one probably even knows of because it is not mainstream. Buy it! I think you will love it!!"

Amazon

Promising review: "It glides through my hair effortlessly, detangling without pulling or causing breakage. The bristles are gentle yet effective, making it perfect for both wet and dry hair. Plus, the color is so pretty! If you struggle with knots or just want a great everyday brush, this one is a must-have!"

Some men may not like posting their significant others on social media, butAaron Taylor-Johnson definitely isn't one of them. He recently celebrated his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson's birthday, highlighting what he finds so special about her in his eyes on Instagram. They may have a controversial age-gap relationship, but their marriage is beyond a PR stunt. Frankly, they could give some of us a much-needed lesson in the ways of maintaining a long-term relationship... 👀

Anyway! Here's what Aaron Taylor-Johnson had to say about Sam Taylor-Johnson in his loving birthday tribute!

See the sweet and spicy way Aaron Taylor-Johnson celebrated Sam Taylor-Johnson's birthday!

Cindy Ord/Getty Images

Sam Taylor-Johnson's nearing her golden years as she turned 58 this week! We're sure all birthdays are a big deal, but we especially appreciate the way Aaron Taylor-Johnson praised his wife on Instagram. His caption reads: "💕Happy Birthday gorgeous! ❤️ Love spending every moment with you 💚💛"

Instead of choosing his favorite picture of her, Aaron posted a lengthy carousel of his wife. Pictures include Sam doing an impressive split (we're jealous!), taking photos on a yacht, enjoying a steamy smooch with him, and being highlighted by the sun's golden rays. Aaron even made sure to throw in the classic "sunglasses on vacation" photo that's almost feels mandatory for couples to pose in.

It didn't take long to find Sam's response to Aaron's beautiful PDA post in his comments. "❤️❤️I love you ❤️❤️," is short, sweet, and to the point as she seems to know how cherished she is.

Aside from her husband's grand gesture, Sam has been reposting more "happy birthday" posts on Instagram stories so we think she's happily soaking up all the genuine love in her life. We can only hope our friends and families will commemorate our birthdays in a similar way this year!

I’ve been poked and jabbed with many skincare tools in my time (you can thank my facialist), but I’ve never really delved into the world of at-home treatments – until now. I’m a huge fan of red light therapy because it’s not only quite relaxing to me, but it is very beneficial to my skin. It can help aid all sorts of skincare woes, from inflammation to scar healing. I’ve been sitting on the bench watching influencers and everyday beauty-lovers try the viral Solawave wand, so I decided it was finally time to try it out.

Read on for my review!

First Impressions Of The Solawave

Meredith Holser

The Solawave wand claims to “reduce the appearance of fine lines, dark circles, blemishes, and puffiness” using a combination of non-invasive science-backed red light, microcurrents, and warmth to target them. I really was drawn to its non-invasive quality, and based on the many TikToks I watched of people using the Solawave, it looked way too easy to be true.

Meredith Holser

On first impression, I liked how compact the Solawave wand was. It wasn’t nearly as bulky like other red light therapy masks I’ve tried, which is especially pleasant since I could take it on-the-go. The red light component of the Solawave even turns to the side so that it fits nicely in the included carrying case (a true makeup bag must-have).

The process of using the Solawave turned out to be just as easy as I initially thought. After a quick charge of 10 minutes, a single press of a button, and 5 minutes worth of moving the wand in an upward motion all around my face, the routine was complete.

The Process Of Using The Solawave Wand

Meredith Holser

The Solawave delivers its treatment in several ways: red light, a vibrating microcurrent, and gentle heat. I honestly didn’t expect the red light to be as strong as it was, considering how small the wand is. I found that the light was vibrant and strong, and since I had to hold it up right against my face to use it, I felt confident that my skin was receiving a thorough red light therapy treatment.

The vibrating microcurrent felt really relaxing on my face. According to Solawave, these currents help “boost your skin's ability to absorb serums and creams.” I most consistently used it in conjunction with the Solawave Skin Therapy Activating Serum, which is recommended to amplify the wand’s performance, but I really didn’t observe much absorption from it. I only noticed a nice level of absorption when I used the wand with my trusty Kiehl’s Ultra Face Cream – with this power duo, my skin felt even more hydrated than if I had just used the face cream on its own.

Finally, the warmth of the wand also felt supremely relaxing. This higher-temperature treatment claims to play a big role in rejuvenating the skin, and boy, did I feel rejuvenated. My only bone to pick with this aspect of the at-home treatment was I found the heat got more and more intense with sustained use (more than 3 minutes), and became a bit distracting from the overall experience. It wasn’t necessarily hot to the point that it’d burn me, but when I found it unpleasant, I knew it was time to turn off the wand.

Generally, the Solawave is super easy to use and provides a pleasant at-home skincare experience. Since it’s non-invasive, it’s pretty low-risk to use it yourself, which I am all for!

The Results!

Meredith Holser

Now, let’s talk about the results. I feel like my face looks quite the same before using it as it does after, but that may be due to the length of time I've been using the Solawave wand. More than anything, I wanted to use it to target the fine lines around my mouth and eyes. I wanted to see some lift! I haven’t observed a massive change in those zones yet.

Meredith Holser

That being said, I still observe that my skin is glowier and more awake after using the wand for a few minutes. I definitely prefer using the Solawave with a layer of moisturizer than the included serum since it helps my skin absorb that good, good moisture.

The Verdict On The Viral Solawave Wand

Amazon

Solawave 4-in-1 Radiant Renewal Wand

The latest iteration of the Solawave wand currently retails for $169 on Amazon, which can be a little jarring, depending on your skincare budget. The way I see it, that amount of money is what I’d be paying for a single facial treatment out of the house (ew, leaving the house?!). So, being able to self-administer similar treatments consistently for the one-time price of the tool is definitely worth it in my eyes. Sure, it may not perform at exactly the same caliber as your professional facialists’ microdermabrasion tool or red light mask, but given the product’s claims and price, there’s endless value in doing it yourself.
