OMG Can You See: The History of the U.S. Flag In One Glorious Infographic

Our signature hues are red, yellow and blue here at Brit HQ — but this week, we’re all about the red, white and blue thanks to a little coast-to-coast celebration we like to call… 4th of July BBQ city, baby! Long after the tray of RWB Jello shots have been downed and the Uncle Sam ‘staches have been Instagrammed, we need something more permanent to keep the spirit of our great nation going.

How about a gorgeously designed patriotic print, eh??

This infographic disguised as art shows 48 different versions of our star spangled stunner in her storied evolution from 1767 to the present.

Look closer — each comes with a mini history lesson underneath it that fills you in on how many colonies or states were official when that flag was first sewn and flown.

Betsy Ross would approve.

This poster is shareable here, but the real-life version sounds similarly spectacular. Each is made on archival recycled stock and pressed using a lithographic press with veggie-based inks in Queens.

Prints start at $29 on PopChartLab. Oh, say, can we see the ultimate host/ess gift for the history buff whose beach house you’re crashing in this summer!

Which rendition of the flag would you fly today? What other infographics have caught your eye lately? Tell us in the comments below!

Mix And Match Art Styles

Think beyond the print and consider original artwork as part of your lasting art collection. Combining different art forms not only adds visual interest but also lets you explore unique textures, colors, and dimensions. Pair a thought-provoking painting with a whimsical sculpture to create a collection that sparks conversation. There’s creativity in building your art collection – have fun with it! The key is finding an element, perhaps a color palette or a theme, that ties them all together.

Seducción by Artista Enzo, Spain, 2023Acrylic on Wood, 19x19in

Set The Mood With Placement

Give your artwork the space it deserves to make it really shine. Landscape pieces in the dining room can create a serene vibe while bright and energetic artwork in a home office can inspire creativity. Let your art guide the mood and function of a room. Consider size, style and theme of the artwork when deciding where to display it too. Large, bold pieces can make an amazing focal point in a living room while smaller pieces grouped together make a great gallery wall. Singulart will create a collection based on your preferences to help you curate the perfect gallery wall too. Browse their curated picks too!

Out of the dark VII by Ute Laum, Germany, 2023 Acrylic on Canvas, 39x39in

Play With Color + Texture

Consider your existing color scheme at home and choose art pieces that complement or contrast them. Bold, vibrant artwork can breathe new life into a neutral room, while textured pieces can add depth and playfulness to a minimal design. Want to give a piece you love the spotlight? Enhance the impact of your art with accent lights or natural light (just make sure to protect it as directed).

Gasa (Rainbow) by Kurtis Brand, United States, 2022 Cotton on Canvas, 50x48in

Rotate And Refresh

What’s fun about a personal art collection is that you can swap it in a new space for an instant refresh. Consider changing art with the seasons or moving art from one room to the next to give it more exposure in a high-traffic space.

Once you’ve begun to curate art pieces that resonate with you, it’s essential to take good care of your purchases so they’ll stand the test of time and continue to bring you joy.

Here are a few tips on how to preserve your art for a lifetime:

  1. Avoid hanging artwork in direct sunlight or in a space with extreme fluctuations in temperature. Sunlight can cause fading overtime, so explore UV-filtering framing options and be mindful of how the light can change in your space throughout the year.
  2. Keep a microfiber cloth or soft, clean brush on hand for routine dusting and cleaning of your art. Avoid any chemical cleaning solutions or water that could damage the work.
  3. Research the art trends associated with your work and learn more about the creator behind the art so you can take pride in the pieces you’ve curated and feel super knowledgeable about them.

Treat your art with love and care, and let your imagination run wild to create a collection that is truly a reflection of you and your creativity!

The girls were reading this year — and reading a lot of romance books at that. And while you may think all romance books are some variation of sex and happily-ever-afters, there are way more different types of stories you can read, from "fated mates" to "friends-to-lovers." According to Tempt's co-founder and COO, Anna Baidachnaya says there are actually six very clear trends with the romance books that everyone loved this year, too — and they may shock you! We know romantasy books reigned supreme, but they didn't have all the fun.

Keep scrolling to see which trends won the popularity contest!

The top romance trends readers kept reaching for — plus which books to read to get the best of them!

1. Fated Mates

Amazon

Baidachnaya says, "2024 was a year of shifting fantasies. At the beginning of the year, women leaned into escapism, and Fated Mates reigned supreme. These stories of love destined by fate offer reassurance and hope, a comforting reminder that some things are meant to be."

Our top picks for fated mates romance books:

The God and the Gumihoby Sophie Kim

It's clear something strong exists between them, but there's more to "Bear" than he's willing to share.

3. Werewolves and Shape Shifters

Amazon

"As the year moved forward, we noticed a shift in preferences. By spring, the mystical allure of Werewolves and Shape Shifters captivated audiences. These tales resonate with listeners navigating personal transformations, offering an intriguing mix of wild passion and self-discovery," says Baidachnaya.

Our top werewolves and shape shifter picks:

Brideby Ali Hazelwood

Amazon

Zodiac Rising by Katie Zhao

Amazon

3. Alpha Males

Amazon

"Alongside this, Alpha Males swept listeners off their feet, embodying strength, passion, and stability in uncertain times. These rugged, dominant heroes captured hearts month after month, holding their ground as perennial favorites," adds Baidachnaya.

Our top picks where alpha males really shined:

4. Enemies to Lovers

Amazon

Baidachnaya says, "Toward the end of the year, modern and relatable themes took the spotlight. Enemies to Lovers, with its tension and emotional payoff, emerged as a late-year darling, showing how rivalry can transform into irresistible romance."

Books where enemies to lovers fell in defied the odds:

Colleen Hoover stans, listen up! While the announcement that Anne Hathaway would lead CoHo's Verity movie broke the Brit + Co group chat, it has nothing on the announcement that was made today: she'll be joined by the one and only Dakota Johnson. And we freaked out. Dakota is a master at intrigue and suspense, and I can't think of anyone else who'd be able to draw us into the story like she will.

Verity follows it-girl author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and her husband Jeremy, who hire Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) to finish the remaining books in Verity's series. But as Lowen starts to take a closer look at their lives, she comes to the horrifying realization that not all is as it seems. While It Ends With Us is Colleen Hoover's most popular and widely-known title, Verity is regarded as one of the wildest — and I'm sure the movie is going to be the same.

You already know Anne Hathaway, meet the rest of the Verity cast before the movie premieres!

1. Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford

John Nacion/Getty Images

The Princess Diaries' Anne Hathaway leads the new movie as Verity Crawford, author, wife, and (apparently) secret keeper.

2. Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh

Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

Dakota Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a down-on-her-luck writer who's confident working for Verity is her big break.

The actress is also starring in Celine Song's upcoming rom-com Materialists, and told Brit + Co just how much she loved working with "big idiots" Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.

3. Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

We'll also see Trap's Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford, Verity's husband.

The Verity movie isn't the only Colleen Hoover book adaptation in the works! Read up on the latest news on Regretting You, starring Allison Williams and McKenna Grace.
