These Chocolate Chip Cookies Can Help Ease Anxiety

While what you eat can help reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes, the foods you consume can also ease anxiety. Registered dietitian, TODAY show nutrition and health expert, and self-proclaimed science nerd, Joy Bauer has devoted her career to uncovering the healing power of food. “The stat is that over 40 million Americans suffer from some form of anxiety. And to think that there really are nutrients and powerful ingredients that can help you is pretty amazing and remarkable," Bauer told Brit + Co in an interview at Yountville Live in California. If you want to naturally relieve anxiety, find out which foods to add to your diet below. Plus Bauer shares her chocolate chip cookie recipe that can help ease anxiety (yes, really!).


Chickpeas

"Chickpeas are a slow burn carb and will help to steady your blood sugar. They have tryptophan, an amino acid that is converted to serotonin in the brain, which is known to ease anxiety. Chickpeas also have folic acid, a B vitamin that is as a mood regulator," Bauer explained.

"Vitamin C found in oranges, guava, peppers, and strawberries has been shown to help people feel less frazzled before exams and oral presentations. But it's not like you can have an orange and suddenly you feel better. You have to regularly have vitamin C-rich foods each day," Bauer told us.

Chia & Flax Seeds

"Chia seeds and flax seeds are plant-based sources of Omega 3 fats. And Omega 3 fats have been shown to help with depression and anxiety. So much so that psychologists are including them in regular treatment," Bauer said. "And the nice part is you can basically put those into anything. Flax seeds have to be ground. Chia seeds you can eat whole. Put them in smoothies, on your oatmeal, or into pancakes or muffin batter. I like to put them on my yogurt. You can throw them into the cookies," she added.

Salmon

"Salmon, because Omega 3 fats and vitamin D work together to help you feel a little less anxious," Bauer added.

Chamomile

"Chamomile is the most studied and well-documented medicinal plant in the world. It helps to ease muscle tension and make you feel more relaxed. It sort of eases the worries of the day. And that's what's so great about having naturally decaffeinated tea before you go to bed," Bauer elaborated.

Chocolate Chip Chamomile Cookies Reciipe

(Makes about 26 cookies)

Recipe Notes: Add a tablespoon of flax or chia seeds in the batter for some extra calming powers. You can also easily make this recipe vegan by subbing the egg for a flax egg (1 tablespoon of flax + 3 tablespoons water) and maple syrup for the honey.

Ingredients:

  • nonstick oil spray
  • 1 cup creamy almond butter
  • 1 (15-ounce) can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 chamomile tea bags (open tea bags, and use the dried tea leaves)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (or canola oil)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Mist a baking sheet with nonstick oil spray or line with parchment paper and set aside.

2. Purée chickpeas in a food processor and then add to a large mixing bowl with remaining ingredients (except chocolate chips) and combine. Fold in the chocolate chips. Alternatively, you can toss all ingredients (except chocolate chips) into a food processor, and pulse until chickpeas are pureed and everything is well combined. Do not over mix.

3. Scoop the cookie dough into balls (about 1 heaping tablespoon each), and place on prepared baking sheet. Gently press down on each cookie with the back of a fork—in two different directions to make a criss-cross pattern (if the batter is too sticky, mist the fork with oil spray).

4. Bake for about 15 minutes. They're extra delicious served soft and warm.

As much as we used to look forward to taking a sick day in grade school, there's nothing fun about having cold or flu-like symptoms as an adult. Sure, you may get to miss work for a few days, but the body aches, fever, and sore throat combination are awful. It's even worse if your period decides to join the party!

There's so many different OTC (over-the-counter) cold medicines and supplements out there...which leads us to wonder: does Emergen-C actually work, or not? Since we're unsure, we turned to Board-certified family medicine physicians Dr. Laura Purdy, MD, MBA and Dr. Jennie Stanford, M.D., FAAFP, DipABOM to help answer our burning questions!

What's the difference between cold and allergy symptoms?

Having seasonal allergies can be confusing when they coincide with cold season. Between kids being back in school and the weather changing, the fall/winter seasons seem to bring on sneezing, coughing, and more. But, how can you tell when you're merely dealing with allergies or something else?

"Colds are viral infections. Symptoms include a sore throat, cough and feeling tired," says Dr. Purdy. Dr. Stanford further explains that viral infections have "traditionally been Rhinovirus species, but it may also be Adenovirus species and others." Colds can also be accompanied by a fever in some cases.

On the other hand, Dr. Purdy and Dr. Stanford both agree allergies are specifically caused by allergens or irritants. "Common Symptoms include sneezing and itchy eyes," says Dr. Purdy. According to the CDC, around one quarter of adults deal with seasonal allergies (raises both hands), so it's not weird if you get confused about when it's time to switch from Claritin to Dayquil.

How should people relieve cold symptoms before heading to the pharmacy?

Before you head to CVS at the first sign of sneezing and a sore throat, there are a few things Dr. Stanford suggests you do. "Optimizing our immune systems by focusing on overall health and wellbeing can help reduce the risk of infections, including the common cold. This includes eating a healthy diet, being physically active, getting enough sleep, and keeping stress in check," she says.

Unfortunately, Gallupreports that 57% of people feel they're not getting the proper amount of sleep they need. But, this doesn't mean you should ignore your lack of rest just because others are struggling too. Take it from someone whose insomnia impacted their mental health and a nasty bout of the Flu followed by Covid-19 two years ago! "Properly treating other health conditions can also help prevent acute illnesses, like the common cold," says Dr. Stanford.

However, it's not unusual to get a cold because Dr. Stanford says they're the "result of germs spread from contact with others." Taking precautions just helps your immune system work the eliminate the viral infection faster.

Do elderberry and Vitamin C fight off colds?

This is where things get a little tricky. Though elderberry and Vitamin C have been hailed as supplements that combat colds, not everyone agrees on their effectiveness. Dr. Stanford says, "While the evidence for Vitamin C in treating colds is mixed, sufficient research suggests that taking vitamin C supplementation can shorten the duration and reduce the severity of cold symptoms." But if you're thinking about relying on Vitamin C supplements, Dr. Stanford is less likely to encourage you to take them because they haven't been proven "to be effective in preventing common cold symptoms."

She also doesn't think you should take elderberry as if that'll also fight off a viral infection. "Elderberry is not effective in preventing colds, and evidence is insufficient to suggest that it is effective in treating the common cold," she explains.

Do you recommend relying on Emergen-C to help combat cold symptoms?

So, what's the verdict on taking Emergen-C once it's confirmed you have a viral cold? The brand has several products that range from gummies to drink mixes, all aimed at supporting your immune system — but does that mean they're safe to take? According to Dr. Purdy, they are! "Emergen-C contains Vitamin C which is great for a good and healthy immune system and recovery. It also contains other good for you ingredients that help with your immune system like vitamin E and Zinc."

However, it's valid to want to know if there's a difference between Zicam and Emergen-C. According to Dr. Stanford, there is! "Similar to Vitamin C, evidence suggests that zinc may be effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold symptoms, but it is less likely to be effective in preventing the common cold," she explains. Plainly put, think of the two like this:

  • Zicam = Zinc
  • Emergen-C = Vitamin C

She even says, "Studies suggest taking both zinc and vitamin C could be beneficial!"

Can certain teas help soothe sore throats associated with colds?

Drinking warm tea can help alleviate cold symptoms, though you shouldn't think they're your only defense against viral infections. In conjunction with cold medicines, "throat coat teas really help soothe inflammation and help manage symptoms," says Dr. Purdy. The reason for this is that most "throat support products are indicated to ameliorate sore throat and similar symptoms, often by numbing agents, temperature, and other factors," Dr. Stanford explains. In short, don't be afraid to use tea as a form of hydration while you're sick!

Dr. Purdy says other things you can use to help alleviate your symptoms are a humidifier, nasal spray, and drops. Take it a step further by taking a "steam shower" to "provide some much needed relief."

Espresso martinis are great as their own thing, but why not make a pumpkin twist on them? This recipe makes the ultimate dessert drink. To create it, combine 1.5 oz Ketel One Vodka, .5 oz coffee liqueur, .75 oz pumpkin allspice syrup*, and 1 oz coffee concentrate** in a shaker with ice, and shake vigorously. Strain it into a chilled martini glass and garnish half of the cocktail with some shakes of pumpkin spice and espresso powder!


For the *pumpkin allspice syrup:

  1. Boil 2 cups of water with 1 tbsp pumpkin spice on high for 5 to 7 minutes. Reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes and remove from the stovetop.
  2. In a jar or bowl, measure out the reduced liquid, it will be less than 2 cups because of evaporation during the boiling process.
  3. Measure out the same quantity in sugar for a 1:1 ratio, and add the sugar to the pumpkin spice liquid. Mix until dissolved, and keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

For the **coffee concentrate:

  1. Mix 1 cup of cold brew (or store-bought iced coffee) and mix with 1 tbsp instant espresso powder.

Yummy Thanksgiving Appetizers can be as cute as they are scrumptious — like these Baked Eggs in Butternut Squash Rings recipe form Lisa Steele, author of The Fresh Eggs Daily Cookbook. Here's how you make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 large butternut squash
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh sage for garnish
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Wash the squash and cut crosswise into six 3/4- to 1-inch slices. Scoop out the seeds and hollow out the middle of each slice to allow room for an egg.
  2. Arrange the squash on the baking sheet and brush each ring with olive oil inside and out, then season with salt and pepper. Bake on the center rack of the oven for 20 minutes, until the squash has softened. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and gently crack and slide 1 egg into the center of each squash ring. Season with salt and pepper, drizzle with olive oil, and return to the oven. Bake about 8 minutes, until the egg whites are set and the yolks are firm but not fully set.
  3. Use a spatula to slide the squash rings onto plates. Top with Parmesan, garnish with fresh sage, and drizzle with olive oil.
