12 Things to Do Before a DIY Apartment Makeover

As 2016 kicks off, we’re all abuzz thinking about ways to refresh, reset and revamp in the new year. On our list, alongside finding a new creative project, working out and cooking more often is the dreamy home makeover. But we’re not talking about a serious renovation that’s only possible when you own your home — we’re talking about things you can actually do yourself without breaking the bank.

How do you transform your space without just tossing everything you own? If you’re a renter, how can you customize your home without saying goodbye to your security deposit? In partnership with Lowe’s, we’re pumped to launch a nine-part series that centers around the home. My home, in fact!

First, a little more about me. I’m the Executive Creative Director here at Brit + Co, and I’ve been here with Brit since day one. For the last four years, we’ve come up with thousands of ideas to help all y’all live more creatively. Gallery walls, furniture hacks and about a million pieces of wall art have flooded your social channels thanks to the creative team I lead. But here’s the catch: I haven’t made the time to practice what I preach and personalize my own apartment! That’s where our partner Lowe’s comes in — their commitment to coordinated style makes it easy to transform your space while also working with your own personal style.

My husband and I moved to San Francisco just about five years ago and we have yet to paint a wall or put up more than three pieces of art, and you can forget about figuring out how to store all of our odds and ends. The thing is, aside from the beige walls, our apartment is actually pretty awesome. It clocks in right around 1200 square feet, has a small outdoor space, two full bathrooms and is rent-controlled. So, it’s time to give it some love. Over the next few weeks, watch as we turn this blank canvas into a colorful and pattern-filled space that matches my (and my husband’s) personality.

Lowe’s is filled with hidden gems that go way beyond hardware. They’ve got everything you need to bring your personal style to life in your home, including tools to help you coordinate your look and tips for transforming, modernizing and personalizing your space while still keeping your favorite things intact. And you can forget about anything cookie cutter. Lowe’s Coordinated Style celebrates the art of thoughtfully mixing, matching and layering pieces around a certain design theme or color palette. After all, your home is an ever-evolving space that should be open to adding new pieces as time goes on.

To start us off, here are 12 things that everyone should do before a major apartment (or home) makeover. Happy home-making! :)

1. Get Inspired: All good makeovers start with inspiration. Thumbing through interior design magazines and home decor books is a great place to start. We also recommend going for a walk! Look around at window displays to see what’s trending, check out what colors and patterns seem to be popular and take plenty of photos.

2. Create a Pinterest Board: You’ve gotta create a Pinterest board! Use this to collect ideas as well as products you actually want to purchase. It’s a great way to see everything come together before you buy or DIY. My board is made up of a mix of super swoon-worthy interiors as well as products and materials that will help me bring these ideas to life. As I go through each room in my apartment, I’ll keep adding inspiration to this board, so be sure to follow it!

3. Make a Plan, Room by Room: As tempting as it might be to just throw some paint up on the wall, resist the urge to be impulsive. This often results in unfinished work, which is sometimes more frustrating than a completely blank space. It’s also important to make a plan so that your home transformation is just as cohesive as your Pinterest board! And don’t forget to take photos.

4. Seek Out Design Help: Don’t go it alone! There are tons of resources both online and offline that help you take on every project in your home. When I started to think about colors for my home, I had no idea where to start. Lucky for me, Lowe’s features an amazing collaboration between HGTV and Sherwin Williams. They’ve created a bunch of booklets that double as mood boards, showing you groups of colors that work together nicely based on your personality, mood and unique sense of style.

5. Pile on the Paint Chips: Speaking of wall colors, we are big fans of piling on the paint chips. Pick out colors you’re drawn to, colors you like as accents and colors you want to surround yourself with. Play with them in your home, experiment with different color combos and groupings. You’re bound to come up with a palette you love.

6. Test Out Wall Colors: Before you get set on your entire plan, take a few colors for a test run. Paste up paint chips or apply actual swatches of paint to the wall, and let it sit for a week. See what you end up loving and hating and you’ll figure out what makes the most sense in each room. And don’t be surprised if you end up hating your favorite color! This is another place where Lowe’s pre-curated color boards really come in handy. You want to make sure your whole home flows, and that starts with the paint colors.

7. Evaluate Your Light Fixtures: When you’re a renter, lighting is not usually the best-looking scene. Look up right now. Yeah. Pretty bad, right? The overhead light in my living room doesn’t even have a shade. Seriously. Evaluate your light fixtures and figure out what is actually possible to change. For some people, updating ceiling lighting is nearly impossible without serious construction, so it’s best to look for a mix of floor lamps and table lamps. If you can’t change your fixtures, decorative light bulbs can help amp things up.

8. Clean Your House: That’s right. You’ve gotta clean your house. Not only is it a good idea to get it spic and span before you do things like move furniture around and paint, but it’s also a good time to purge. Get rid of things you don’t use, move seasonal things to storage and put away your clothes!

9. Don’t Forget About Storage: Possibly the least sexy thing on the list is storage. But it’s an important thing to solve if you want to capitalize on your space. An organized space is a more creative one — we promise.

10. Stock Up on DIY Materials: Spray paint? Yes please. Wood for building a window box? OH yes. Hit up your local Lowe’s and stock up on all the DIY basics you’ll need to transform your space.

11. Find Ways to Bring the Outdoors In: No matter how small your space is, it’s important to find ways to bring the outdoors in. Succulents and cacti are great foolproof options for those of us without green thumbs! When the Lowe’s Style Team compiled their inspiration for 2016, greenery was at the top of everyone’s list.

12. Collaborate With Your Roommates: In my case, my roommates are my husband David and my dog Turkey. Don’t forget about them, even if you tend to be the decor decision-maker in the house. When choosing paint colors, David and I literally walked around our apartment while holding a bunch of paint chips. And… we may or may not have chosen a bunch of different shades of blue and green. What can I say? We have a color type ;)

Alright, ready to transform this apartment? Stay tuned! And be sure to follow Lowe’s on Pinterest for all sorts of home inspiration.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Therise Edwards, founder/CEO of Teshley Solutions, an education consultancy firm that helps students and families navigate the complexities of the education system K through 12.

What is an unexpected business challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?

I wouldn't call myself a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) expert, but I ended up having to know a lot more about it than I ever anticipated. FAFSA is what administers Pell Grants, which is what a lot of colleges base their financial aid on. I knew about the application changes, and some were excellent, but they made a series of critical errors and a lot of parents were scrambling. It was not my intent to have this as my area of focus; it just became a necessity.

What's a recent small win for your business?

Recent small wins are my collaborations. I formed partnerships with one organization that focuses on students with special needs. I hosted a webinar with the executive director of that organization. I formed a partnership with members from an insurance company on planning and paying for college. That was my first corporate sponsorship. And I've got a series of events coming out because others actually reached out to me. One of them I met through another networking platform, but I got to that platform from one of the sessions that I did with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program.

How did you start to collaborate with external partners?

Just changing my strategies and my approach, and just being more secure and more emphatic in making connections. It ends up being this continual cycle.

Is there a woman in business that you admire or that you look up to?

I have two. Leontyne Anglin, who runs a nonprofit called Beyond Expectations. She works with a small pool of students, but she just gives them enormous exposure and opportunity. She's brilliant with collaborating with individuals and businesses and really bringing the students what they need. And then the other on a bigger scale is Cate Luzio, founder and CEO of Luminary, who taught her Business Plan Bootcamp through the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. She is just a dynamo. She is just so supportive of women entrepreneurs. She's awesome.

How did the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program help propel your business forward?

All of the collaborations and partnerships with the exception of one all came from joining the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. I’ve taken all of the free classes and the one on projections and pricing, something every entrepreneur struggles with, was very helpful. There have been so many of them. Sometimes you're completely ignorant in a category so you take the class and it's like, okay, that's good to have. But then sometimes you sign up for it and it's like, oh, yeah, I did know 90 percent of that, but this other 10 percent is going to be very, very helpful.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

They're all colorful, festive, and so much fun to wear to any and every holiday get-together you've got going this year.

Christmas party games are a fun way to connect, relieve some holiday stress, and bring some holiday cheer, way better than zoning out in front of the TV or navigating tricky political conversations. Whether you're hosting a holiday party or hosting the big day (or eve), here are some ROFL Christmas games for adults and kids to experience real holiday joy, perhaps create some new traditions, and take the best IG shots of the season.

Here are 20 exciting Christmas party games you can play with the whole family!

Shutterstock

Christmas Charades

Play charades with a holiday twist! Write down Christmas-themed clues (e.g., decorating a tree, Rudolph, Mariah Carey, building a snowman...) and have teams act them out. Keep it simple for kids, especially ones learning to read, or add some pop culture references (Buddy the Elf, anyone?) for adults-only parties.

Shutterstock

Name That Carol!

Play short snippets of Christmas songs and have guests guess the title. To up the challenge, use instrumental versions or hum the tune. For kids, you can turn this into musical chairs with holiday music!

Shutterstock

Christmas Trivia

Create trivia questions about Christmas movies, traditions, and songs. Bonus points for the most obscure facts! Here's a few to start:

  • Which country started the tradition of putting up a Christmas tree? (Answer: Germany)
  • In the song Twelve Days of Christmas, what is given on the 7th day? (Answer: Swans a-swimming)
  • Which country celebrates “Feliz Navidad”? (Answer: Spain or Latin American countries)

Shutterstock

Guess the Holiday Scent

Use candles, essential oils, or holiday-themed spices like cinnamon, peppermint, or pine. Blindfold guests and have them guess the scent. Throw in some unexpected surprises like egg nog, maple syrup or Scotch tape.

Shutterstock

Snowball NBA

If you're lucky enough to have a White Christmas, set up buckets outside labeled with different point values. Guests toss real snowballs, or “snowballs” like white cotton balls or small foam balls if you're playing indoors, into the buckets for points.

Shutterstock

The Awkward Gift Wrap Race

Find awkwardly shaped items around the house, like a basketball or stuffed animal, and provide rolls of wrapping paper. The fastest (and neatest) gift wrapper wins!

Shutterstock

Ornament Relay

Hand out spoons or chopsticks and teams have to race to get ornaments from one side of the room to another.

Shutterstock

Candy Cane Hunt

Similar to an Easter egg hunt, hide candy canes around the house or yard and let guests hunt for them. Wrap a few with dollar bills to up the ante .;)

Shutterstock

Holiday "Who Am I?"

Stick Christmas-themed names or characters (e.g., the Grinch, Jude Law, Holiday Armadillo, Charlie Brown) on players' foreheads. Guests ask yes/no questions to guess who they are. It's a great ice breaker for new friends!

Gingerbread Decoration Contest

Anything with a ticking clock adds a certain element of hilarity to it. Give your teams gingerbread houses with icing and decorations. Let the creativity flow, and award prizes for categories like “most festive” or “funniest" or "worst construction."

RDNE Stock project

Here are more Christmas games to play this season:

Jingle Bell Toss: Set up your college-era Solo cups into a bowling pin formation at opposite ends of the table. Each players tries to get large jingle bellsinto the opposite side’s cups. The first player to get a bell in each cup wins.

Human Hungry Hungry Hippo: Pair up, stand in a circle, and hand out plastic candy canes. Toss shatterproof Christmas balls in the middle of the circle. One person stands, holding the feet of the other person on the floor. The person on the floor tries to collect more balls with the candy cane than the other teams for a human version of Hungry Hungry Hippo!

Christmas Pictionary: Like charades, but on paper. Use pop culture references like "Hallmark Holiday Movie" or holiday-themed phrases like "Silent Night" for teammates to guess.

Left-Right Christmas Story Game: Make up a holiday story that includes the words "left" and "right" often. Guests pass a wrapped gift or object left or right as the words are mentioned, and whoever holds it at the end keeps the gift!

Christmas Bingo: Downloadbingo cards with holiday symbols or themes. Mark them off as they’re called out. First to yell “Bingo!” wins.

Reindeer Ring Toss: Use inflatable reindeer antler hats (or make your own) and toss rings to see who can "decorate" the reindeer.

Christmas Cookie Taste Test: Bake or buy a variety of holiday cookies. Blindfold guests and see who can identify the most flavors correctly.

Christmas Movie Emoji Quiz: Create a string of emojis that represent Christmas movies and have guests guess the titles.

Snowman Building Contest: If there’s snow, go outdoors for a snowman-building competition! If indoors, use toilet paper to “wrap” someone as a snowman.

Holiday Scavenger Hunt: Make a list of Christmas-related items like a red ornament, mistletoe, or a stocking and have guests search for them in teams.

Christmas Karaoke: Set up a karaoke machine or app and sing along to holiday classics. Bonus points for best singer or most dramatic performance!
