Expert Tips for Finding Products, Tools + Styles That Work for *Your* Hair

As with everything in life, if you want to be the best, you have to master the basics. It makes sense that when it comes to your hairstyle, you’ve got to start small before you create Pinterest-worthy looks. For a complete education on styling your own hair, you’re going to want to get your hands on The Art of Hair($12) by New York hairdresser Rubi Jones. This gorgeous book covers everything from how to stock your product drawer to how to create 40 different types of ponytails, buns, braids, twists and curls. We chatted with Rubi about the building blocks of a great coif — figuring out what products, tools and styles work for your hair type.

Find the Right Products for Your Hair

Anyone who’s used the complimentary toiletries at a hotel knows that products are so not one-size-fits-all. “I would always invest in shampoo, conditioner, a flat iron, at least one good brush and a professional blow dryer,” Rubi suggests. “My favorite styling products vary in price range, and my favorite curling irons are only $30, but skimping on the products and tools above makes a huge difference in your hair.” To determine what products are best for you, Rubi says you need to pay attention to what works with your natural texture instead of fighting against it. For some, the other “must-have” tools might be a large detangling comb, a Mason Pearson brush and a blow dryer — but for you, it may just be coconut oil on your own two hands.

Learn How to Blow out Your Own Hair

We know what you’re thinking: I can never blow out my hair as well as my hairdresser can! True, it’s tricky, but Rubi swears you can get very close to a salon-quality blowout by following two essential rules: 1. Get yourself a good blow dryer and hang on to the included nozzle. 2. Pre-dry your hair. “Pre-drying is essentially doing most of the drying without a brush — and no, it doesn’t involve flipping your head upside down! You use the brush to smooth and finish or to add a wave.”

Take the Time to Find an Exceptional Stylist

One of the other essential investments you need to make is in a good cut and color. “A good haircut is the foundation for good hair,” Rubi attests. “You could be doing everything else right, but if your cut isn’t the best, it will show. Finding a good hairstylist is like dating — invest the time in finding the best person for you and your hair.” We all know how hard it is to find The One, so we’re following Rubi’s helpful tips on finding the stylist of your dreams.

Protect Your Locks With Prep + Braids

There are 11 unique braid tutorials in The Art of Hair, so it’s not a surprise to hear that Rubi loves braiding her hair. She says it’s a great way to give your hair a break from all that styling or get it through the growing-out phase — she’ll leave a braid in for days! But if your hair woes include breakage and brittle ends from too much heat styling, it might be because of how you’re doing your hair, not how often you’re breaking out the flat iron. “The problem is usually not using any product before styling to protect your hair from the heat,” Rubi tells us. “You want to layer product into your hair at every styling step, instead of using them to lacquer your hair into place at the end. It will result in less heat to achieve your style and more long-lasting looks.”

Don’t be Afraid to Experiment

Mastering The Art of Hair may sound a little serious, but Rubi emphasizes that hair is meant to be FUN, and she loves that people are trying new looks these days. In line with her advice about products that work with your hair, she’s noticed that more and more people are embracing their natural hair. “I like that most people have put down the flat iron. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good flat iron, but the super flat ‘00s hair kind of became a crutch for a lot of people with frizz or curls.” As a bonus, Rubi shared with us her steps for getting an incredible, retro blowout.

Whether you’re rocking those natural curls or are looking for ways to add va-va-voom height to your fine hair, be sure to pick up The Art of Hair and get styling!

Do you feel like you’re stepping into a time capsule or experiencing a wave of déjà vu lately? It’s no coincidence. As we embrace fall for 2024, fashion and beauty echo the bold yet relaxed vibes of the '90s — a decade profoundly influenced by Saturn in Pisces from 1993 to 1995. This resurgence is more than just a revival of retro aesthetics; it’s a nod to the celestial energies that shaped that era.

Whenever Saturn, the planet of structure and discipline, meets the romantic sign of Pisces, magic is bound to happen. Saturn’s time in Pisces encourages introspection and creativity, stirring a cultural shift now that's currently resurfacing in our beauty and style choices — hairdos included. This planetary influence seems to have set the stage for a revival of '90s trends, blending that era's grunge and romantic elements with a contemporary twist.

Looking around, you’ll notice a nostalgic flair in the current hairstyles, which combine the gritty allure of '90s grunge with an updated, romantic sensibility. Women are channeling the spirit of the era through their choice of fashion and hair, from power suits to oversized knit sweater dresses to the iconic "Rachel Haircut."

As a former hairstylist turned astrologer and beauty expert, I’m here to guide you through this nostalgic transformation by blending beauty advice with cosmic magic. Let’s illuminate your inner and outer beauty with a sprinkle of astrological insight! With that in mind, here's what you can expect for fall hair trends in 2024.

Fall 2024 Haircuts

This season, the French Bob — popularized by celebrities like Winona Ryder in the ‘90s — makes a stylish return with a chic, sophisticated edge. The Lob, a favorite of Julia Roberts, continues to bridge classic and contemporary with its timeless appeal. Salma Hayek’s daring Pixie cut and baby bangs from this era are also back, bringing a bold, youthful vibe. The Shag, reminiscent of the rock-and-roll spirit seen in the '90s, and “The Rachel Haircut,” which initially debuted during Saturn’s transit in 1995, are making notable comebacks. Let’s dive deep and look at the haircuts making their mark this fall.

French Bob

Channeling the chic and playful vibes of the '90s with a sophisticated edge. Wearing this flirty cut with your favorite barrette (butterfly clip) can go a long way from work to events.

Lob

The long bob (AKA Lob) remains a timeless favorite, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary. This low-maintenance cut is perfect for busy moms or those who want to give bobs a chance without commitment.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Micro Fringe

Bringing a bold, youthful touch reminiscent of the era’s daring looks. These bangs are risqué, yet you can wear them proudly with the right attitude and pomade.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

The Shag (AKA The Wolf Cut)

Embracing the layered, textured appeal of the 90s with a blend of rock-and-roll and romance. This haircut is ideal for those with natural waves that need a boost. Use a diffuser and leave-in product for the best results.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

The Rachel Revival Haircut

I’m calling this “The Rachel Revival Haircut.” It's a mature take on the iconic Rachel, adding a polished twist to a classic favorite. The trendsetter Aquarius, Jennifer Aniston, reawakened this timeless haircut earlier in 2024, and it's definitely making an official comeback this fall! Fun fact: this original haircut was debuted by Aniston when Saturn was in Pisces on Friends in April 1995.

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Long Layered Haircut

This haircut balances nostalgia with modern elegance, offering a versatile and timeless choice. Long hair has been an American girl’s staple, but tresses must be healthy and well-maintained. Schedule routine haircuts with your stylist to ensure health and longevity for your locks. Also, invest in a hair treatment mask and use it every other week.

Fall 2024 Hairstyles

Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

The hairstyles for fall 2024 are a vibrant nod to the '90s, as well, channeling the duality of grunge and romance, reflecting iconic trends sported by celebrities of the time. Drew Barrymore embodied the carefree spirit of textured waves, while Pamela Anderson brought Hollywood glamour to the forefront with her voluminous updos. Kate Moss personified the bedhead grunge look with effortless style. These timeless hairstyles are set to make a striking comeback this fall, blending '90s nostalgia with modern flair.

Textured Waves

Loose, tousled waves that evoke the carefree spirit of the 90s grunge scene. The secret to working an effortless look is to use a salt spray.

Sleek Half-Updo (With Gel)

This polished yet relaxed style is a major throwback to the glossy finishes popular in the ‘90s. Use a paddle brush to achieve a sleek look and manage flyways.

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

The Pamela Updo

Voluminous and glamorous, reminiscent of the 90s Hollywood glamour that combines practicality with retro chic. From the office to a fall gala, this hairstyle will turn heads.

Sleek Single Braid

This minimalist and refined style echoes the decade’s sleek and structured trends. Apply a hair serum to dry hair to give it a glossy finish.

Bedhead Grunge

To achieve this look, embrace the effortlessly undone aesthetic that defined '90s grunge. Use a pliable leave-in product and apply it to towel-dried hair. Twist random locks and allow them to air dry.

Fall 2024 Brunette Trends

Netflix

Fall 2024’s color palette embraces deep, rich browns, echoing the earthy tones popular during the early '90s under Saturn in Pisces. This revival mirrors the iconic brunette looks of that era, including Winona Ryder’s natural elegance in Reality Bites, Julia Roberts’ striking deep brown in The Pelican Brief, and Salma Hayek’s dramatic espresso in Desperado. These shades — rich brown with baby lights and bold espresso — capture the sophisticated essence of fall 2024’s color trend. Let’s explore the range of brunettes that can capture your essence this season — and don’t forget to use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner to preserve your new color!

Rich Brown with Babylights

A look that holds onto the memories of summer while transitioning into autumn. It is a warm and multi-dimensional color that includes highlights for dimension.

Truffle Brown

This look will channel Emily in Paris vibes. It's a classic, tasteful, and yet low-maintenance color that will keep you on your A-game this fall.

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images

Chestnut

A classic, warm brown with a natural shine. This is the perfect color for those who like to rock a shade that emanates intoxicating shades of red, gold, and copper.

Espresso Brown

This is your go-to shade for an alluring yet endearing tone. It is deep and dramatic, offering a bold contrast.

Ebony

An ultra-dark hue that brings a sense of mystery and depth.

Saturn’s influence brings a wave of introspection and transformation, so it’s no wonder the 90s are making a stylish comeback. This fall, let’s embrace the past with a renewed sense of style, celebrating the nostalgia and sophistication of the season’s trends!

Celebrities really aren't that different from us. They experiment with their fashion, they have their tried-and-true party recipes, and they get serious celebrity crushes. And we can actually thank Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter Apple (and her celeb crush on Timothée Chalamet) for the GOOP founder's return to the big screen. Marty Supreme marks the first time Gwyneth Paltrow has been in a movie since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, and as soon as Apple heard about the Dune star's involvement in the new movie, "she pleaded with her mom to accept," according to a Daily Mail source.

We don't actually have an official synopsis for the movie yet, but Variety reports that the fictional movie could be inspired by the life and career of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, who passed away in 2012. Here's everything you need to know about the film, including the beloved rapper making his film debut.

See The First Set Photos From 'Marty Supreme'

The first leaks from Marty Supreme show Timothée Chalamet with a brand new haircut and a mustache. (I was wondering why he cut all his hair off!). He is barely recognizable and my first thought when I saw these photos was "Oh!" His trousers + button down + tie combo is vintage, but I definitely want a pair of red leather gloves for fall 2024.

And can we get Timothée in a sweater vest for the rest of time?

What is the new ping pong movie?

Marty Supreme Plot

Timothée Chalamet's new movie Marty Supreme is a ping pong movie, and word on the street is it's inspired by the late Marty Reisman. On July 15, A24 confirmed Timothée's casting on X (formerly Twitter) with a photo of a ping pong ball with "Marty Supreme" written on it above three stars and "Made in America."

The style of A24's ping pong ball looks similar to real-life ping pong balls used in the 1960s, which definitely supports the idea Marty Supreme could take place in the 60s or 70s. And this isn't the first time we'll see Timothée Chalamet in a vintage biopic! The actor is starring as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, which hits theaters this Christmas.

Who's in the Marty Supreme cast?

Marty Supreme Cast

In addition to Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator just joined the cast of Marty Supreme. Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein are writers, as well as producers alongside Timothée Chalamet, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas.

When is Marty Supreme coming out?

Marty Supreme Release Date

We don't have an official release date for the movie yet. Stay tuned to see when Marty Supreme will hit theaters!

The hardest thing about having thin hair, is when you're trying to style your short, thin hair. It can be incredibly hard to style, especially you're always looking for new ways to add volume, only for it to fall flat... literally. Well, as a former short hair girly myself, with seriously thin hair, I've got the hacks and hairstyles for all the volume you could ever need.

Plus, I consulted the experts, Julius Michael(celebrity hair stylist) and Wes Sharpton (hairdresser at Hairstory) to get their professional opinions on which hairstyles are best for short and thin hair, as well as any pro tips they have for ways to add volume. So keep reading for all the best — and easiest — hairstyles to add volume to your short, thin hair!

Textured Side Part

Instagram/@juliusmichael1

Celebrity hairstylist Julius Michael gave us tips on how to achieve this cute, side part hairstyle that adds a lot of texture! He first, starts by adding texture to the roots with his Voloom hair iron, and then he finishes the style with a 3/4 inch curling iron to create soft waves. His number 1 tip for short, thin hair? Don't be afraid to experiment! He also embraces flyaways because they keep the hair naturally beautiful and not so frozen and stiff!

Layered Bun

Shai

A messy bun with with face framing pieces and layers, is the easiest way to fake volume. If your hair is flat like mine, and it just doesn't hold volume, then just throw your layers into a messy bun and pull out face-framing pieces. This will not only flatter your face shape, but it also gives the illusion of volume. Sometimes I like to put my hair up in a bun, and slowly start yanking out a few layers throughout the hair to give it a lived-in look. We're not looking for sleek, because that will make the hair look flat. The messier, the better!

Loose Waves

Claire Craig

Loose waves look incredible with short hair! And the key to gaining volume? Texture, texture, texture! To get this texture, you're going to want to buy a texture spray, and spray it all throughout your hair. Then scrunch it, flip it upside down, and really tossle it. This will give it volume, and ensure it doesn't look thin.

Textured Pixie

Wes Sharpton

Wes Sharpton, hairdresser at Hairstory, gave us an expert tip if you happen to have short hair that is also fine and curly. He says that you can mix wax and oil and form the coil with a diffuser hair dry to help give the hair some body and texture. This style looks especially good with short hair, styled like above in a super cute textured pixie cut!

Voluminous Curls

Dominique Goncalves

These voluminous curls are achieved by tightly curling the whole head of hair. But the real trick is to tease the roots with a brush. When I had short hair, this was my secret weapon. I would style it with heat, then tease my whole head at the root to ensure it looked full, and didn't fall flat in 30 minutes. Top it off with some hairspray to really hold it all together!

Fun Bow/Scrunchie

Cora Pursley

A good hairstyle that makes your hair look full, even when it's messy, is to use a scrunchy. Tease up the roots once more, and throw it into a low bun with a fun scrunchy. I love the one above, because the large bows make the hair look large and full. This is a lazy-girl approved hairstyle that still makes your hair look put together!

Blunt, Textured Bob

Ajaila Walker

A blunt bob has to be one of my favorite hairstyles ever, but it can be seriously hard to style if you have thin hair. A tip for this is to sleep in little braids or buns. I would take my short hair and twist it up with a clip just a bit before I went to bed, then when I woke up, I had the cutest waves that made my hair look so much more full and voluminous. The messy look, like above, is a 10/10, I'm obsessed with this style.

Claw Clip

Pexels/İlknur Çelik

The easiest style for short-haired girlies with thin hair? Claw clips. These will save your life, especially when your hair gets in that odd, inbetween phase where it's not too long and not too short. You just get a cute claw clip and clip it up into a half-up half-down hairstyle. I like to purposefully push the claw clip up, so it gives a bit of volume in the back of my hair. And voila! All you need for an easy hairstyle to give volume to your otherwise thin, flat hair!

Scream 6 was one of the hottest movies of 2023, and we've been looking forward to Scream 7 since the credits started rolling! I'm super excited to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott, but it also looks like Friends star Courteney Cox is in talks to return to the slasher franchise, too. Here's everything we know about the new movie.

When is Scream 7 coming out?

Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Release Date

Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026. This is an unexpectedly perfect release date because nothing sends a shiver down my spine like winter (and Ghostface of course).

Scream 6 was such a fun spring movie because outside of Halloween season, anytime around summer feels like the perfect time for a scary movie!

Is Sidney going to be in Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Cast

Yes, Sidney Prescott will be in Scream 7! “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” franchise lead Neve Campbell says on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The actress was not involved in Scream 6 due to salary inequity. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream,'" she told Variety ahead of the sixth movie's release. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Who else is in the cast of Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

In addition to Neve Campbell, we could also reportedly see Courteney Cox reprise her role as Gale Weathers, via Variety. However, we won't see onscreen sisters Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega in Scream 7. It was announced in November 2023 that Melissa would no longer star in the franchise following her posts on the Isreal-Hamas war, while Jenna's absence has been attributed to Wednesday season 2 scheduling conflicts.

What is Scream 7 going to be about?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Plot

We don't have an official plot for Scream 7 quite yet, but I'm feeling confident we'll see Sidney Prescott and (hopefully) Gale Weathers take down another Ghostface. Scream 6 co-writer Guy Busick has the sole writing credit on this new script, as well as Melissa Barrera's 2024 movieAbigail.

Is Scream 7 confirmed?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Scream 7 is officially happening! After Scream 6 (which was released in March 2023) became the highest-grossing movie of the whole franchise, a sequel was announced in August of that year. Kevin Williamson, writer for the original 1996 Scream, will direct.

Who do you hope to see in Scream 7? Check back here — and our Facebook! — for the latest news on your favorite movies.
