Want to Get Fit? Follow This Pro Athlete Meal Plan

You’ve heard time and time again: A healthy lifestyle requires diet and exercise. But striking that perfect balance is tricky. Even if you’re doing an awesome job of nailing those whole-body workouts, you might still be wondering where all those hard-earned muscles could be hiding. To help you out, we’ve enlisted the expertise of nutritionist Cynthia Sass, who has served as a sports nutrition consultant to competitive athletes and four professional teams, including the New York Yankees.

Cynthia’s main secret? Quality over quantity. She believes that anyone can eat like a pro athlete or Olympian, as long as you’re sensible about what you’re putting in your body. “One common mistake is thinking that since you’re burning more calories with training, you can eat whatever you want,” says Cynthia. “While exercising does allow you to eat more, the quality of what you eat is still vital in order to get the most from your training.”

Think about the type of exercise you’re doing too. Building strength? You need protein. Going the distance with endurance training? That’s where carbs come in. “Even weekend warriors or recreational athletes can fuel themselves with nutrient-rich, whole foods, including lean protein, good fats and plenty of plant-based foods,” she says.

As an example, Cynthia has put together a delicious, nutritious meal plan that’s designed specifically for women who are trying to build muscle or doing lots of strength-training activities like Pilates. Most of the recipes come from her new book, Slim Down Now: Shed Pounds and Inches With Real Food, Real Fast. These will help you stay energized, replenish nutrients and support recovery during your training. Let’s go!

Cynthia Sass’s Nutritious Meal Plan

1. Breakfast: Almond Oatmeal

Ingredients:

— 1/4 cup vanilla flavored pea protein powder

— pinch of ground cinnamon

— 1/4 cup dry, old-fashioned rolled oats

— 1/2 cup fresh sliced strawberries

— 2 Tablespoons sliced almonds

— 1/2 cup 100% green juice

Makes 1 serving

Directions:

Stir pea protein powder and cinnamon into oats. Pour hot water into oats and stir (Note: do not add cold water and heat in the microwave), starting with 1/4 cup, then adding one Tablespoon at a time until oatmeal is your desired consistency. Add berries, top with almonds and serve the green juice on the side.

2. Lunch: Salmon Avocado “Tacos”

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

— 1/2 cup quartered grape tomatoes (about 16)

— 1/4 cup minced yellow bell pepper

— 1/4 cup minced white onion

— 1 teaspoon minced garlic

— pinch of cayenne pepper

— 1 Tablespoon minced fresh cilantro

— 1 teaspoon minced fresh jalapeño

— 2 Tablespoon fresh squeezed lime juice

— 3 large outer romaine leaves

— 1/2 cup cooked quinoa

— 3 ounces cooked or canned wild salmon, cut into 3 pieces

— 1/4 ripe avocado, diced

Directions:

In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, garlic, cayenne, cilantro, jalapeño and lime juice. Toss together and marinate in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. Fill romaine leaves with quinoa, top with salmon and vegetable mixture, and garnish with avocado.

3. Post-Workout Snack: Sassy Superfoods Smoothie

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

— 1 cup vanilla almond milk

— 2 Tablespoon almond flour

— 2 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

— 1/2 Tablespoon chia seeds

— 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

— 1 scoop unsweetened pea protein powder

— 1 cup (loose) chopped kale

— 3/4 cup frozen cherries

— handful of ice cubes

Directions:

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

4. Dinner: Black Bean Almond Ginger Satay

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

— 1/4 cup minced yellow onion

— 1/4 cup organic low sodium vegetable broth

— 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

— 1/4 cup minced red bell pepper

— 1/4 cup shredded purple cabbage

— 1/4 cup minced white button mushrooms

— 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger

— 1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric

— 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper

— 2 Tablespoons almond butter

— 1 cup black beans

— 1 Tablespoon sliced almonds

Directions:

In a medium pan over low heat, sauté onions in broth until translucent. Add garlic, bell pepper, cabbage and mushrooms, and sauté for two to three more minutes.

Add ginger, turmeric, crushed red pepper and almond butter, and stir until sauce is uniform. Add beans to heat through. Top with sliced almonds and serve.

Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.


Why Your Flexibility Stalls

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! We haven't gotten an official confirmation that Joseph Quinn is joining the Narnia movies, but near the end of a Vanity Fair game with his Gladiator 2 costars, Fred Hechinger guesses Joe's favorite movie franchise is Narnia — and everyone immediately starts acting suspicious. Making faces at each other, getting quiet, and being super awkward is not the way to act inconspicuous, you guys. It definitely reminds me of the Outer Banks cast trying not to spoil the OBX 4 ending, which doesn't help the situation.

After a reunion with Brie Larson at the 2024 Golden Globes (they starred in 2010's Greenberg together), X users are hoping the Oscar winner will make an appearance! "She need to get in Narnia somehow," one user said when they retweeted a video of the reunion. The reunion in question features Brie hopping like a bunny over to Greta, who squeals as they hug. That's exactly how I greet my friends IRL.

"When [Brie Larson] gets the Best Supporting Actress nomination for playing the White Witch, wait," one user added.

Saoirse Ronan told The Wrap at the Sundance Film Festival that she's already asked to be in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies! The actress played the lead in two of Greta's films: Jo March in Little Women and the titular character in Ladybird. "We have that kind of relationship where I’m like 'So I’ll be in the next one!,'" she says. The actress also told The LA Times that "if [Greta] asks me, I’ll be in it."

However, it looks like we do have an idea of who we won't see in the cast. OG Narnia cast member William Moseley (Peter Pevensie) told Bleeding Cool he doesn't expect a call from Greta Gerwig: "I’m not part of that world anymore, which sometimes makes me sad because I love the world of Narnia and becoming a part of it."

"In terms of what I think about Greta Gerwig directing, I think she’s incredible," he continues. "Barbie was an amazing movie, and Little Woman was brilliant. The specific Narnia movies the writer-director's making haven't been named, but a TIME interview claims Greta's adapting "the first book" in the series. The only hiccup is that they don't confirm whether they mean the first book chronologically (The Magician's Nephew) or the first book C.S. Lewis published (The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe). I'm thinking it'll be The Magician's Nephew since we've never seen that story onscreen.

“[The films] won’t be counter to how the audience may have imagined those worlds,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos tells TIME, “but it will be bigger and bolder than they thought.”

While we don't have official confirmation on which movie Greta Gerwig is adapting, we know she wants it to have even more of an impact than Barbie. "I want to make it feel like magic," she says. “C.S. Lewis said that the goal of writing fantasy — you know, something from his imagination — he’d say, let’s say you wrote about an enchanted forest. The goal would be that then every time you walk into a forest after you read it, you’d say to yourself, ‘maybe this is an enchanted forest.’ So that’s a tall order, but I guess re-enchantment of the world [is my goal].”

It looks like we can expect to come away from Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia movies with even more love for the world, more childlike wonder, and more courage and kindness towards each other — and I am totally here for it.

Like the intentional planner she is, Greta Gerwig actually thought about directing a Narnia movie way before her involvement was ever confirmed. "I would say the land of Narnia is equally exciting and terrifying," she says on The Empire Film Podcast. "I have nothing really to report on it other than it’s something I was actually talking about before I made Barbie. So, that’s been sort of in my unconscious working its way through. But that has been a pattern. I wrote a draft of Little Women before I made Lady Bird."

We don't have any info yet on whether this adaptation will pick up where The Voyage of the Dawn Treader left off, whether it will be a remake of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, or if it will be a totally new story within the Narnia universe (similar to Prime Video's The Rings of Power).

I'm personally anticipating that it will be the first option because I would love to see Greta bring something like The Magician's Nephew (which has never been adapted) to life onscreen.

The Chronicles of Narnia revolves around the fictional land of Narnia, and the children in our world who find it. Time passes differently in Narnia than it does on earth, which means that even though around 50 years pass for the characters, they find themselves in a different decade or century every time they reenter the magical land.

Each book has themes like good vs. evil, family, and identity as the characters face different challenges and adventures. The coolest thing about these books is how open-ended C.S. Lewis wrote them — because your own personal experiences, life lessons, and worldview impact your imagination, you have a different experience every time you read them.

“It’s connected to the folklore and fairy stories of England, but it’s a combination of different traditions,” Greta Gerwig tells TIME. “As a child, you accept the whole thing—that you’re in this land of Narnia, there’s fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up. It doesn’t even occur to you that it’s not schematic. I’m interested in embracing the paradox of the worlds that Lewis created, because that’s what’s so compelling about them.”

Why yes, there is! The Hollywood Reporterconfirmed last week that the Game of Thrones movie is in the early stages of production. According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys first announced that a GOT film was in the works at Warner Bros. during a 2025 preview event, where he told reporters, “When we announce at HBO we're developing this story or that story, keep in mind it's developing.”

Bloys continued, “We’ve got two shows at the moment, including Game of Thrones [prequel House of the Dragon]. I think the movie is the same idea. They’ll develop an idea, we'll see if it's good. We'll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. That’s the point of development: you see, is there a story that's worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.” We are sooo excited!
