Book club night has always been the most sacred date in my calendar. Seriously, what could be better than diving into a new book and chatting about it with your best reading buddies over copious amounts of snacks and booze? This month’s reads are all about those hot and heavy days of summer. From escaping into the magic of a first kiss to confronting the painful realities of today’s society, we’ve got the reads that will keep you and your book besties talking into the wee hours of the night.
The Wrong Side of Right by Jenn Marie Thorne ($12): When the AC is on full blast and your iced coffee is melting faster than you can sip it, we know you’re looking for 100% escapism. Jenn Marrie Thorne brings it in her fun, romantic novel about a girl who discovers her long-lost father is running for President of the United States… and oh yeah, his rival’s son is pretty cute too. We recommend pairing this with the Amanda Bynes classic, What a Girl Wants.
Beach Read Book Club
Movie Starby Lizzie Pepper by Hilary Liftin ($15): We’ve got no shame when it comes to devouring beach reads and celebrity culture, and this book totally does it for us. Satisfy juicy, celeb-inspired book club cravings with this faux memoir about a girl-next-door starlet who gets the hell away from her cult-loving husband.
Pop Culture Book Club
Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari ($17): Whether your days of swiping left on dates are long behind you or you’re still deep in the dating trenches (#solidaritysister), this collection of essays is sure to inspire A LOT of discussion ’round the book club table. Make sure you stock up on extra wine to supplement all the bad date stories.
News-Junkie Book Club
Between the World and Meby Ta-Nehisi Coates ($14): If the blurb on the cover from literary great Toni Morrison wasn’t enough to persuade you, then reading any of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ essays in The Atlantic should do the trick. With racially charged incidents like #WhatHappenedtoSandraBland happening all too often (that is to say, at all), this book, written as a letter from Coates to his young son, is essential for understanding the racial problems in our society.
#GirllBoss Book Club
The Achievement Habitby Bernard Roth ($15): If your book club devoured Lean Inand #Girlboss, then this title is totally up your power-reader alley. Let your five-year plan take a mini-break and put your brain to work with exercises designed to challenge your perspective and strengthen your goals.
Literary Fiction Book Club
The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez ($11): Ever since it debuted a few months ago, this gorgeous novel has been racking up rave reviews. If your dream for a passion-filled summer hasn’t quite panned out, live vicariously through the tragic trials and tribulations of these hopeful, recent-immigrant families as they search for stability in their new country.
Memoir Book Club
Wondering Who You Are by Sonya Lea ($8): Sonya Lea’s husband went into the ER for an emergency surgery and woke up with 23 years of his memories wiped clean. Gone were any recollections of his relationship or his kids, or any semblance of his old personality. This painful, honest memoir recounts Sonya’s experience of rebuilding their relationship and explores what it truly means to love someone.
Historical Book Club
The Church of Marvels by Leslie Parry ($13): Circus tricks, tragic accidents and a lunatic asylum, all set in 1890s New York City: Yep, this book has it all. It’s weird, it’s wonderful and it’s entirely engrossing. You’ll want to move up your book club date to talk about this one, because it’s going to be ALL you can think about.
#Throwback Pick for Your Book Club
Cat on a Hot Tin Roofby Tennessee Williams ($10): Tennessee Williams knows how to bring on the heat! Whether you’re digging up your dusty high school copy or it’s your first time reading this irresistible play, get ready to pick a side and pour one out for the tragically sexually unsatisfied Maggie.
