2 Ways for City Dwellers to Make More Out of Awkward Spaces

Live in a city apartment? Chances are, you’ve got a few spaces that you don’t quite know what to do with. They’re definitely not closets, and they seem like rooms… but still, something’s off. We all have them, and I’m excited to share how I transformed two of mine into cozy, colorful spaces for hanging out.

a brand new series

my Pinterest board.) Today, we’ll tackle the den and the “porch.” I’ll refer to it as a porch throughout this post, but let’s be real — it’s a glorified platform that happens to be attached to my apartment. These final two pieces of the puzzle show how just a few easy steps and coordinated style notes can truly transform even the smallest of spaces.

If you’ve been following the series, than you know that my husband David and I have a thing for all things blue, green and teal, and love finding ways to bring the outdoors in. Five years ago, we decided to leave New York for San Francisco, specifically in search of a city that celebrates the natural beauty that surrounds it. So, when we found an apartment with a porch that opens onto a small den that leads into the kitchen, we were SOLD. Or whatever the equivalent of “sold” is in renter’s terms ;) The thing is, the porch door opens into the apartment, making it difficult to figure out what to do with this little amount of space.

Follow along to see how a few small style moves totally transformed these two tiny spaces.

First thing’s first: You need to define your space, and decide what you want to make out of it. If it needs to be a space for storage, make it that way. If you love the idea of having a cozy TV-less nook that’s separate from the living room, do that. If you get a dog, you’re going to need a place for his stuff as well. For us, we wanted all three of those things in one — and we wanted to be able to leave the door open on nice days. Oh, and this room is basically an extension of the kitchen, so that needed to be taken into account as well. We took the color of the dining chairs and found the closest paint shade possible for the walls, then riffed off of that color to bring the rest of the room together in a coordinated way.

IS IT A DEN, A STORAGE AREA OR A DOG HOUSE? ALL THREE!

Paint

As you can see in the before and after shot above, the move that packs the biggest punch is painting those beige walls. We used a deep teal from Lowe’s HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams paint collection (specifically GS 20 Intense Teal SW 6943).

Update your lighting.

mini pendant light. The hammered quality on the glass makes the light these give off slightly dappled, which adds warmth to the room.

If you can’t update the lighting that’s hard-wired into your apartment, consider adding string lights. A strand or two of these babies is an easy to warm up the vibe of a room without having to contact an electrician.

3. Choose larger statement pieces as decor. It may seem counter intuitive, but large pieces of art or decor can actually make a small room or space feel larger. Behind the couch, we hung up a tapestry I found in India more than 10 years ago. It actually hung in my college bedroom senior year, and I rediscovered it at my parents’ house this past Christmas. I knew it would go perfectly with the color palette of our apartment. We also found this pair of vintage wooden skis at Alameda flea market. They’ve been leaning against the wall of this room for about three years — now they’re finally on the wall! Gotta love mixing the old with the new.

Coordinate your textiles.

throw pillows to add to the mix, as well as this cozy throw from Lowe’s.

Patterned rugs FTW.

wooly graphic black and white rug? I love it! And Turkey does too.

Be smart about storage.

dresser is a great way to organize more than just clothes — this one houses table linens, paper plates and napkins, extra bike parts and odds and ends that belong to our pup, Turkey. We’ve also designated a zone on the top of the dresser for the dog-related things we need to access on the daily.

Add shelving.

wall-mounted shelf. It’s a great addition to a cozy corner!

8. Bring the outdoors in. If you’ve got a door you can open, open it and literally bring the outdoors in. Since this door opens into the room, we chose to use a lightweight bench as our coffee table. It’s super easy to move when we want to open the door, which conveniently brings us to the outdoor portion of this home transformation ;)

So, you signed a lease for an apartment that boasts outdoor space. And guess what? That sun-drenched porch would be better described as a landing or a glorified balcony. Well, fear not — we’re going to show you a few simple ways to breathe life into what little outdoor space you have.

OUTDOOR SPACE YOU CAN ACTUALLY HANG OUT IN

It’s a little unfair that the before shot was taken on an overcast day and the after shot on a sunny one, but hey — weather’s weather, and this updated porch is a whole lot brighter! When it comes to outdoor space, it’s tough to update when you’re a renter because you can’t refinish the wood or add anything permanent. So, this is all about adding pops of color and styling your little heart out.

1. Make brightly-colored planter boxes. You need to figure out how exactly you’re going to add color to your space. Because I’m a renter and our porch was built with unfinished wood, painting the actual porch was not a possibility. We had to figure out how to add pops of color without making any permanent changes. Planter boxes to the rescue! We created boxes that would work atop a porch railing, hanging off the edge of the balcony or in a window. Check out the video below to see how it’s done.

Materials:
wood cut to desired size

— sanding block

— paint brushes

— paint

— drill

— screwdriver

— flowers

— soil

Instructions:

1. Figure out what size window boxes you have space for. Get each piece cut to size at Lowe’s. You’ll need four long rectangles and two small squares for each box.

2. Sand all pieces of wood.

3. Grab three long rectangles of wood and drill holes that are a ½ inch each from all four corners of the wood. That’s four holes per piece. When drilling, place a buffer piece of wood underneath, so you don’t damage your work surface.

4. Use a drill or screwdriver and screws to attach the long pieces of wood to the short, thick end pieces. Leave a gap at the top of the box so you can slide the base piece in.

5. Once you’ve screwed in the wood to make the perimeter of the box, slide in the bottom piece and screw down into the thick ends of the box.

6. Drill four holes in the base piece of wood for draining.

7. Paint with your favorite colors using outdoor paint.

For paint, we used a few colors from Lowe’s HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams collection: FF 07 Tame Teal SW 6757; FF 16 Jay Blue; GS 20 Intense Teal SW 6943; and FF 09 Amaryllis SW 6591.

We love how they look sitting right on top of the railing, especially against that bright blue sky.

You can also use these plant hooks to hang your planter boxes off a railing, window or balcony.

Turn barstools and a tray into a café for two.

bar stools — two small wooden ones at a slightly lower height than the bright yellow metal one in the middle.

Top the yellow stool with a tray, and boom — a café table is born. A sweet little breakfast scene, coming soon to an Instagram near you.

Add large potted plants.

large resin planters at Lowe’s, and used Rust-Oleum spray paint to paint them colors that coordinate with the space. It’s no secret that rain has not been showing up around these parts. If you’re a California dweller, it’s important to remember to water your plants — even the outdoor ones. We stocked up on a couple of old fashioned watering cans, available in silver, red and green.

We also recommend considering cacti and succulents instead of water-hungry plants. They look just as lovely and happen to be drought-friendly.

Choose an unusual doormat.

allen + roth semicircle doormat. Its shape makes me think of sunshine and rainbows, and who doesn’t love those things? It’s a perfect accent for a sunny outdoor space.

And there you have it: two rooms totally transformed with just a few small but impactful changes. Three cheers for coordinating color palettes, patterned textiles and sunny afternoons.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Rita Suzanne, a marketing strategist for health and wellness businesses who learned to network, connect with other entrepreneurs, and build her business online and IRL.

What's an unexpected business challenge that you've had to face and how did you overcome it?

The hardest thing for me was my sister passed away and I ended up taking custody of my nieces. I ended up being a single mom of four kids. This is the thing that transitioned my whole entire life. I stopped doing web design and started my podcast Mom Owned and Operated. I wanted to reconnect with other moms and figure out how they were able to run their businesses and raise a family and take care of themselves because I wasn't able to do all three at the same time. Through that journey, I realized that I really needed to connect with other people and how important it was for my business. It helped me to create that community that I was yearning for that I didn't realize that I needed.

What's a recent small win for your business?

For me, the win was just pivoting back to something that I actually wanted to do. Also, I’ve started to say no to things that I no longer want to do.

Who is a woman in business that you look up to and why?

I have always admired and looked up to Amy Porterfield [author of Two Weeks Notice]. I listened to her all the time when I was starting out. I think that she's amazing and I love her stuff. She just seems like a very genuine person.

Is there a resource that has made an impact on you as an entrepreneur?

I listen to a lot of audio books. One of my favorites that has been huge for me is You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was told when I first started my business, by a friend who was a business coach, that I have a mindset problem. Ten years ago, I had no idea even what “mindset” was. Sincero’s book helped me to see what she meant by “mindset” and helped me adjust that mindset and fix some of the things that I didn't realize were broken.

How has the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program helped propel your business forward?

There are a lot of things that I have loved about it. There are local networking and training opportunities, and that has been great, and the online training is very valuable. It's a great resource. I find that marketing needs a three-tiered approach, meaning you need to network it locally, socially, and then also have a very comprehensive online approach to your marketing. One of the Verizon Small Business trainings that I took was all about taking advantage of your local resources. I found that to be extremely valuable because often people think they need to just focus on social media. I don't think that people focus enough on their local community.

It was the TV character arc heard round the world: after learning her boyfriend's dad didn't think she had what it takes to be a journalist, Rory Gilmore 1. Dropped out of Yale. 2. Stole a yacht and stopped talking to her mom. 3. Grew into the kind of journalist who didn't have pitches prepared and didn't ask good questions. But, according to one Reddit theory, Gilmore Girls actually hinted Rory wasn't cut out for the career at the very beginning of the series.

Warner Bros. TV

"Do you guys remember how in S1, at Chilton, Rory was given a very mundane journalistic task about the paving of the parking lot, and she wrote a piece on how everything and everyone becomes obsolete?" one Reddit user asks. "Even though the teacher was praising her, I thought it was the weirdest journalistic angle. It's so... literary and philosophical. Then it dawns on me - well, of course! She isn't a journalist. She is a writer."

As a writer myself, I totally relate, understand, and approve this theory. Journalism uses an objective, straightforward part of your brain, while creative writing requires so much creativity and imagination to breathe life into something other people would find obsolete (like that parking lot piece).

Neil Jacobs/Netflix

A Year in the Life shows us that Rory truly shines in the creative writing world because while her story on waiting in lines leaves something to be desired, she comes alive writing a novelized version of her and Lorelai's life. "She really does appear to have so much fun writing Gilmore Girls," the Reddit user continues.

Despite making many mistakes, leaning into her love of writing isn't actually one of them. She just needed to find the right kind of writing to really shine. Because let me tell you, when you do find that sweet spot, where your soul comes alive and your typing can barely keep up with your brain, you truly feel most like yourself.

Warner Bros. TV

TBH, this is just further confirmation that she deserves to be with Jess Mariano. Who pushed her to be the best version of herself? Who wrote a book and came back just to tell her? (That's right — Jess). It's all very Laurie and Little Women to me!!! And the fact that Rory immediately lets her guard down and spills her guts shows just how comfortable she is with him.

"It's the fact that Rory hasn't seen Jess in four years, but within ten seconds of him sitting down — without him even really ASKING her anything — she is sharing all her deepest fears," Facebook user Victoria TP says. "One conversation, and she's more vulnerable and honest with Jess than she is with any other person in her life."

Netflix

I mean, just look at that final yearning, longing stare!!! I can hear the wedding bells.

We love a good beauty hack, from time-saving tips to discovering new beauty finds that make us feel confident and glowy for the season.

The B+C edit team recently swapped out our summer lip routine for City Beauty’s new plumping gloss, City Lips Sparkling Cider, and City Lips Night Oil, a smooth exfoliator that hydrates your lips while you sleep. I’m literally obsessed with it! They’re both Leaping Bunny-certified (AKA cruelty-free), and made without irritants or harsh chemicals. Plus, they plump more and more over time.

We all agreed the color looked great on our respective skin tones and the plumping factor didn’t sting like other plumping glosses. “I seriously can't believe it doesn't tingle when you apply it!,” said Jasmine, our staff editor. Read on for our full review of the City Lips Sparkling Cider plumping gloss and City Lips Night Oil, plus other City Beauty products!

Mallory Levy, Editorial Social Lead

The Cider lipgloss is great to have on hand in your car or on your desk for those last-minute touch-ups before your next Zoom call. “I love the soft sparkle. It’s not too flashy for work or casual outfits,” says Mallory. “It’s a great daytime shade to wear on no or light makeup days so I don’t look dead on Zoom calls.” LOL. It looks great layered on top of a base shade too. “I wore it on my anniversary and my husband loved it, “ says Mallory, who celebrated her first wedding anniversary. “He never notices my makeup!” She also found it less sticky than other lipglosses, which is a bonus when you have long hair on windy days.

Jasmine Williams, Staff Writer

Jasmine, who tends to avoid color on her lips, loves the color for fall. “I usually rely on clear lip oils whenever I wear makeup, but I can't get over how much Sparkling Cider reminds me of a golden sunset.” SAME. “Considering it's a plumping lip gloss, I'm shocked at how moisturizing it is. I only needed one coat to get the job done, but the smooth application made me add a few more.”

We all agreed there was no tingling effect, which was awesome. “It's not super sticky like some lip glosses tend to be,” adds Jasmine. “I can see myself reaching for Sparkling Cider no matter which fall outfit I choose to wear.”

Meredith Holser, Affiliate Writer

“I love the plumping component,” says Meredith. “I can definitely tell it’s working when I put it on, but it’s not overly distracting or painful. Plus, I notice a difference in the volume of my lips after applying!”

The color is also an ideal match for Meredith’s skin tone and lip color, though a bit more shimmery than the lip products she typically uses. I personally love the shimmer and it’s not too overwhelming. Meredith also really liked the City Lip Lip Oil. “The scent is very unique, almost floral,” she says. “The oil is definitely thicker than other lip oils I’ve tried, which is nice for the long-wear since you’re meant to apply it at night and let it soak in.”

Theresa Gonzalez, Branded Editor

As someone with naturally thin lips, I love the lip oil too and agree it feels weightier than other oils, which is part of its appeal. The gloss color is super pretty over my neutral base, especially for a fall look.

As the only (tired) mom on the edit team, I appreciated the Lid Lifting Treatment and was surprised how quickly I noticed a lift! I applied it at night and in the morning with a small dab on my lids, and I felt that I looked visibly more awake! It nourishes your skin too to soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It makes a great primer for eye makeup too.

Want to try it yourself? Upgrade your lip routine this fall with City Beauty’s new City Lips Sparkling Cider plumping lipgloss, and City Lips Night Oil!

If we learned anything from the Great Ticketmaster Fiasco of 2022 (complete with Senators quoting lyrics to each other during the ticket platform's legal hearing?), is that it's way too hard to get concert tickets these days. John Medina/Getty Images

Taylor Swift's portion of an Eras Tour concert is three hours long, but there are openers too! In total, you'll be in the venue for around five hours. For my concert day (the stadium is over an hour from my home), I started getting ready at 10am, and left around noon to accommodate public transportation, traffic, and lines. I was in my seat at exactly 6:30!

Internet fans rejoice! The one date we've been waiting two years for has finally arrived: Andrew Garfield and Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Date. The two stars first connected in 2022 on the GQ Men of the Year Awards red carpet, which Garfield attended and Dimoldenberg hosted. Fans honed into their chemistry immediately and, just like Dimoldenberg, started begging for the We Live in Time actor to make an appearance on her Chicken Shop Date web series.

And when they ran into each other again on the 2023 Golden Globes carpet? It was rom-com levels of adorable! "We must stop meeting like this," Andrew Garfield joked. And I think Amelia Dimoldenberg — who is the last word in confidence and boldness — clearly made him nervous because it didn't take long for him to start tripping over his words. "I only ever want to see you," he says, then grabs her hand and laughs as he clarifies he wants to see her "in these kinds of situations."

“'I only ever want to see you' would simply make me pass away, she’s so strong," one TikToker said in the comments, while another asks "why did this have ME blushing." Same y'all.

But the plot thickens because during the long-awaited Chicken Shop Date, Andrew Garfield actually tells Amelia Dimoldenberg they could have gone on a real date (you know, without all the lights, camera, action).

“Don't, like, bring out a ring or get down on one knee, I'm not in the mood today," Dimoldenberg jokes at the beginning of the video. "It's been vibey to the point where you've been avoiding me for two years because the vibes were too much for you to handle, so I'm actually surprised you're here."

After playing a game of "Snog, Marry, Avoid" with Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, and herself (he picked her to avoid), Garfield says, "This is called flirting Amelia. This is actually a first date." Does this prove men never really stop teasing the girls they like?

"I actually believe, maybe, we could've [gone on a real date]," he adds, "without all of this." Um hello?! I need these two to go on a real date ASAP.

The Chicken Shop Date comes after Amelia Dimoldenberg told Drew Barrymore she'd recently kissed someone. "I'm feeling really good about being single at the moment, but that's because I kissed someone recently," she said. When Barrymore presses for more info ("With tongue?"), she adds, "Yeah, with tongue."
