11 Back To School Essentials For Surviving And Thriving In College

best back to school prime day deals

I fear there’s no other feeling like shopping for your college dorm. When it was finally my time to enter the world of dreaded 8AM lectures and wacky cafeteria lunch breaks with friends, all I could think about was curating the cutest room possible. And while cuteness surely is an important factor, practicality is, too. There are certain items I truly couldn’t live without that made navigating the first semester of college (and the semesters beyond) so much easier.

These 11 back-to-school items undoubtedly shaped my experience in a positive way, and if you’re someone shopping for college essentials (for yourself or your recent grad), now’s the perfect time to snag ‘em. Scroll on to see why I love them and recommend they’re a staple in every college kid’s life!

Amazon

Amazon Echo Dot 5th Gen

The Amazon Echo Dot does it all – it plays music, answers questions, sets alarms, and even pairs to different devices like lightbulbs, TVs, and phones to make daily routines easier. I definitely overused mine for playing my favorite songs at the time (oh, 2018 college era, how I miss you!), and the audio quality was just impeccable, even for such a small space like a dorm.

Amazon

ZeroWater 10-Cup Ready-Pour 5-Stage Water Filter Pitcher

Knowing I was going to be staying in an older dorm (I'm talking built in the early 1900's), I was absolutely set on getting a filtered water pitcher to stay hydrated and healthy. The hydration component is especially important for any college-goer in a hot climate. This pitcher holds 10 cups worth of water, all while filtering out harmful minerals, metals, and more for an ultra-pure taste.

Amazon

Eudele Shower Caddy 5-Pack

If you're lucky enough to have an in-suite dorm shower, these stainless steel bathroom organizers will save you the legwork of lugging a bulky toiletry tote back and forth. You won't have to make any holes to set them up, since they rely on a strong adhesive material to hold to the shower wall (dorm-friendly AF). This set comes with 2 caddies, 2 soap holders, and 1 toothbrush holder that can surely handle all your fave products!

Amazon

Roku Express HD Streaming Device

Missing the latest episode of your favorite TV shows is so not cool, even in between the college chaos. Stock up on this convenient streaming package from Roku to make sure you (and your new college pals) are entertained during every hangout! I really like the Roku set-up because it's easy to kickstart yourself, you can customize which platforms are included, and it's very affordable.

Amazon

Keurig K-Express Coffee Maker

No college morning is right without coffee. I'd fire this lil' baby up before every 8AM and even on late weeknight study sessions, and it truly saved me. I highly recommend the Keurig because of how easy it is to use – just pop in the compatible K-Cups, press a button, and voila: a hot, steaming cup of yummy coffee comes to the rescue. This model is also great because of its compact size, which you can slide between books on your desk or atop a dresser with minimal mess.

Amazon

JBL Tune Buds Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds

You truly could not catch me on campus without a pair of earbuds, and though I had to settle for (gasp!) the wired Apple headphones during my degree-getting era, I wish I'd had these wireless JBL buds handy. These boast several different noise cancelling modes to suit any sort of situation, from the library to the student union. They also have a battery life that gives you a whole 48 hours of listening time, so you can be sure they won't die out during a hyper-focused study sesh or workout.

Amazon

Dash Tasti-Crisp Electric Air Fryer Oven

Who needs cafeteria food when you have a whole air fryer, am I right? (Sorry, mom and dad – I still frequented the food hall despite my unhealthy attachment to this appliance.) So yes, the air fryer was my dorm room savior after long nights out with friends. I could heat up frozen fries or tots with ease, and I even found myself using it to conveniently heat up leftovers when I had them. This 2.6-quart-sized model is the perfect size for a small dorm room and shouldn't cause any problems in the way of housing rules, since it doesn't use an actual flame to function. Don't be surprised if your RA comes knocking on your door to snag some delicious air-fried snacks.

Amazon

Arslo Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle

Like I said, hydration is key to conquering the day as a college kid. I wouldn't leave my dorm without a full, ice-cold bottle. I especially love any kind of insulated bottle like this, since the contents will stay that way for a long time. This one is shoppable in different sizes like 18, 24, 32, and 40 ounces to suit your personal needs. It comes complete with a set of straws and lids, so it supports however you like to sip!

Amazon

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9500 Electric Toothbrush

I'm not sure why, but I really got into my oral hygiene game in my college years. This electric toothbrush was (and continues to be) a game-changer for me! It has 5 brushing modes and 3 intensity levels to customize your brushing experience. I also adore that it comes with a compact carrying case, which came in handy when I wanted to leave my dorm for weekend visits back home. It's genuinely lasted me years, so I'd say it's a very apt investment.

Amazon

Ozzptuu Bedside Storage Caddy

Depending on your specific dorm set-up, you may have to hoist your oh-so glamorous twin-sized bed up a bit to make room for other furniture and appliances. I certainly chose to do so, and a beside caddy like this made all the difference when I needed something like lip balm or earplugs in the middle of the night. This one is fitted with plenty of pockets for your phone, chargers, pens, pencils, books, and practically whatever you want to put in it. It hangs off the bed railing with two study hooks!

Amazon

Levoit Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Like it or not, you've gotta keep your dorm room clean. This cordless vacuum kept things so nice and tidy for me all throughout my college years (even when I moved from the dorms to an apartment), and I couldn't recommend it more. In addition to the traditional roller attachment, there's a few more brushes that you can use to tackle hairy spots and dusty corners, plus it's impressively flexible so you can reach every other nook and cranny. It's fairly compact, too, so it'll fit nicely within your closet for safe-keeping.

As memorable as Rory’s white sweater, Lorelai’s love for coffee, and Luke’s love for Lorelai are, NOTHING is more memorable than Gilmore Girls’ dialogue. The show's fast-paced nature and witty banter solidified it as a singular piece of media, and also meant scripts were basically twice the length of regular drama scripts at the time. From recognizable moments in the series to lines that consistently make us laugh out loud no matter how many times we rewatch, here are the best Gilmore Girls quotes of all time.

"Oy! With the poodles already." — Lorelai Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

This might just be the most iconic Gilmore Girls quote of all, and it captures everything we love about the show: it's a little confusing, a little quirky, and oh-so-memorable. Not to mention the fact it's totally quotable.

"No, it's National Baptism Day. Tie your tubes, idiot." — Paris Geller

Warner Bros. Television

Paris Geller never fails to provide a sassy one-liner, and this one is, without a doubt, her best. This quote comes when, after Rory and Paris run into their dorm literally dripping rainwater, a classmate asks them if it's raining. Classic.

"Where you lead, I will follow." — Carole King

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

Gilmore Girls truly wouldn't be the show we know and love without its iconic opener. The Carole King song highlights Rory and Lorelai's loyalty & love, and the fact they'd truly do anything for one another.

"He kissed you and you said thank you? Well that was very polite." — Lorelai Gilmore

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

One of my favorite GG moments is when Dean and Rory share their first kiss in Doose's Market...and then Rory says "thank you" and runs out of the store. Her conversation with Lorelai is both hilarious and genuine, and it feels like the kind of conversation I would have had with my mom if I were in Rory's position.

"People can live a hundred years without really living for a minute." — Logan Huntzberger

Warner Bros. Television

Logan might come off as a playboy, but this Gilmore Girls quote is incredibly profound. It's important to live every day to its fullest (although we don't recommend jumping off a high surface with an umbrella).

"I live in two worlds. One is a world of books." — Rory Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

Oh Rory, the great reader. Just like Harry Potter's Hermione Granger, Rory inspired a whole generation of young women to read more, and we love her for that! (I'm also convinced if she were a teen in 2024, Rory would love Sarah J. Maas).

"No men. Just lots and lots of Chinese food." — Paris Geller

Warner Bros. Television

There's nothing left to say here, except to share our 10 Quick Chinese Recipes You Can Make At Home.

"Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals?" — Rory Gilmore

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

Rory Gilmore is ALWAYS reminding us where to put our priorities. (Although she still looks very, very pretty).

"This is a jumbo coffee morning. I need coffee in an I.V." — Lorelai Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

As the sun starts rising later, and setting earlier, I'm definitely going to need more coffee. Because during Daylight Savings Time, every morning is a jumbo coffee morning.

"It takes a remarkable person to inspire all of this." — Richard Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

Not only does this Gilmore Girls quote hype up Lorelai the way the single mom/beloved inn owner deserves, but it also finally gives us (and Lor) a really beautiful moment with Richard. They share a lot of the same wit and mischief, and he doubtlessly sees a lot of himself in her.

"I smell snow." — Lorelai Gilmore

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

Gilmore Girls is definitely a fall show, but thanks to this iconic quote from Lorelai, I also think of her when it snows.

"We’re almost there and no where near it, all that matters is that we’re going." — Lorelai Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

Lorelai might be talking about a literal journey (AKA the roadtrip to Harvard), but this is also a great reminder about the journey of life. All that matters is that you're moving!

"WHY did you DROP out of YALE." — Jess Mariano

Warner Bros. Television

This GG quote shows how much Jess cares for, and understands, Rory. And it's been immortalized thanks to the internet.

"I'm so hot I may hit on myself tonight." - Sookie St. James

Warner Bros. Television

Sookie's never one to sugar coat things (well, except dessert), and that includes talking herself up! Let this be a lesson for us all.

"Life's short, talk fast." — Lorelai Gilmore

Warner Bros. Television

Gilmore Girls in a nutshell.

"It's like my life isn't even real to me unless you're there, and you're in it, and I'm sharing it with you." — Luke Danes

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

There are very few Gilmore Girls quotes that sum up our favorite show like this one. GG is all about spending time with people you love. If you ask me, there's nothing sweeter.

Jeremiah Brent x Crate & Kids launched a kid's room and nursery collection this week with a color palette to swoon over. Inspired by Viennese design from the 1930s and various motifs, colors, and patterns collected from his travels, Brent chose to use rich and sophisticated colors like Bordeaux, mauve, camel and cobalt to create rooms that parents love and babies can grow into. Here are 2025 color trends from the collection, plus more nursery colors designers are coveting this year.

Color Trend: Mauve

Jeremiah Brent x Crate & Kids

The dad to 9YO Poppy and 6YO Oskar (with husband Nate Berkus) focused on materials that aren’t traditionally seen in baby and kids spaces so parents can use them throughout the home as they get older. Featured above are Jeremiah Brent x Crate & Kids Rachel Canopy Full Bed, Chestnut Red Treasured Side Table, Vine Table Lamp, and the Heirloom Organic Cotton Velvet Quilt and Sham. Materials are sustainably sourced from FSC-certified wood and organic cottons.

Color Trend: Bordeaux

Jeremiah Brent x Crate & Kids

The Embrace Brown Swivel Glider, Memoire Armoire Cabinet, and 12th Street Rug can be used beyond the nursery, such as in an office or guest room. The rug and crib feature that same curvy corners hinting to the vintage inspiration.

Color Trend: Camel

Jeremiah Brent x Crate & Kids

Camel accents are also on trend to complement the richer tones of Bordeaux and cobalt as shown in the collection's Treasured Stroller Blanket.

Color Trend: Browns and Greens

Babyletto

So long traditional pastels: A camel-colored curtain panel complements that greens and browns in this nursery designed by Babyletto. I just love how this Babyletto Bondi Crib compliments the colors!

Color Trend: Moss + Sage

Etsy

"I’m still big fan of moss that is a cooling unisex color and acts as a gentle and inviting background for natural blonde tones of wood accents and furniture," says Natália Severdia, founder and principal designer of Bay Area and Lake Tahoe-based Interior Studio Natália. This Etsy Watercolor Forest Wallpaper is such a cute take on the color for a nursery!

Pottery Barn

"However a shade darker palette, including muted dark sage with walnut toned wood, accented with woven natural textures of jute and rattan, is appealing as well," adds Severdia. This wall mural is a more traditional take on mossy greens and woods from Chris Loves Julia x Pottery Barn collection.

Cribs are getting the color treatment too with a hint of nature-inspired greens to pair with natural woods. The Nestig Palm Crib is a great example of that!

Color Trend: Muted Terra Cotta

Etsy

"We're seeing a shift from the traditional pastels to more gender-neutral, earthy tones," says Amanda Leigh, cofounder of LA-basedHouse of Rolison. "Soft sage greens, warm taupes, and muted terracottas are becoming popular, creating a calming yet sophisticated environment." Accents like a crib canopy are a perfect way to incorporate these colors!

Nestig

Muted colors paired with a deep Bordeaux paint on the ceiling makes a stunning impact in this nursery design from Nestig. The earthy Willow Crib is such a nice way to ground the more colorful room.

Color Trend: Deep Blues

Sandberg Wallpaper

"There’s also a resurgence of deep blues paired with natural wood accents, offering a serene yet stylistic vibe," says Taylor Hahn, cofounder of House of Rolison. This Sandberg Starry Sky Wallpaper is ADORABLE, unexpected, and a sign of richer tones to come.

Color Trend: Taupe

Etsy

“For 2025 nursery color trends, expect a shift toward calm, sophisticated, and nature-inspired tones," says Johanna Constantinou, interior trends expert at Tapi Carpets & Floors. "Soft colors are likely to dominate, creating a soothing environment that reflects the growing desire for organic and eco-friendly spaces." This soft, vintage-inspired nursery gallery wall is perfect for creating that calming environment.

Oilo Studio Nola

Colors like taupe and nature-inspired colors like moss and sage create a serene and peaceful nursery. "Earthy tones like warm beige, soft taupe, and muted terracotta are also gaining popularity for those looking to create a more grounded, gender-neutral space," she echoes. A nursery chair, like this one from Oilo Studio Nola, is a fantastic way to incorporate these tones.

It Ends With Us is no stranger to controversy. The book, and its movie adaptation, follows the story of Lily Bloom (played by Blake Lively in the film), who finds herself in a domestic violence relationship when she falls in love with Ryle Kincaid (actor & director Justin Baldoni).

Over the last year, the project has created online conversations around everything from Lily's outfits to Brandon Sklenar's (who plays Atlas Corrigan) red carpet anxiety. And the latest chapter in the drama appears to be between Baldoni and Lively.

Internet users are speculating that there's been a creative control struggle between Baldoni and Lively throughout the process, especially now that rumors are swirling Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds hope It Ends With Us scores Lively an Oscar nomination. The actress also served as producer and was involved in everything from the script to the inclusion of Taylor Swift's "My Tears Ricochet."

What happened between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively?

@deadline#JennySlate on working with #JustinBaldoni, who served as both scene partner and director to the actress in #ItEndsWithUsMovie♬ original sound - Deadline

Fans first noticed something seemed off when it was revealed Blake Lively, Brandon Skelnar, Jenny Slate, and Colleen Hoover don't follow Justin Baldoni on Instagram (even though he follows them). Baldoni didn't take photos with the cast at the New York City premiere, and he also hasn't done any of the viral press with his costars. Plus, the fact that Baldoni's onscreen sister Jenny Slate dodged a question about him only makes this whole situation more odd.

When an Instagram user called Lively's behavior "disappointing," her brother-in-law Bart Johnson replied (via People), "I’m really sorry you feel that way. I’m sure you have a huge heart and want the best. I can promise you the truth has not come out yet. Blake worked harder on this film than anything I’ve seen her do my entire life. Because it meant so much to her."

"The message is in the book. And in the movie. Not in short clips / interviews," he continues. "She is the reason the message / this movie/ is getting out. Were mistakes made? Yes. I make mistakes in life. But they aren’t under a microscope. Anyway, I respect your views. I got nothing but love for you."

The Hollywood Reporter reveals the cast and crew might have wrapped with two different cuts of the movie, citing creative differences between Baldoni and Lively, and sources told Page Six the studio went with Lively's "more feminine cut." (THR reports Lively commissioned Shane Reid, a Deadpool & Wolverine editor, for It Ends With Us, although the final project is credited to editors Oona Flaherty and Robb Sullivan.)

But the supposed feud might go deeper. A set source just revealed to People that not only have Blake and Justin been at odds, but apparently "the principal cast and [author] Colleen Hoover will have nothing to do with him."

"All is not what it seems," the source continues. "There is much more to this story."

Sources told The Daily Mail Baldoni was "chauvinistic" and "borderline abusive" during the filming process.

“The tension was so obvious,” an It Ends With Us on-set source told Page Six. “Once she was done with the scene she was really impatient, said, ‘Am I done? Can I go?,’ and as soon as they said ‘yes,’ there was like a Blake-size hole in the wall...She was so outta there.”

There are rumors Justin Baldoni made Blake Lively feel uncomfortable in her postpartum body (she gave birth to fourth child Olin in February of 2023; the movie began filming in May of 2023), and that he asked an on-set trainer how much she weighed before filming a scene where he has to pick her up. Baldoni reportedly has back problems and wanted to make sure he didn't injure himself. Lively also reportedly felt like the actor & director lingered too long during a kissing scene.

But throughout the whole press cycle, Justin Baldoni has been the only member of the cast raising awareness for domestic violence, and praising the strength of DV survivors.

During the premiere for the film, Baldoni told ET, "This is a night for all the women who we made this movie for...If a Lily Bloom in real life can sit in this theater and maybe make a different choice for herself than was made for her, maybe she sees herself on that screen and chooses something different for herself, that's why I made the movie."

Will Justin Baldoni direct It Starts With Us?

In addition to this video from set, where Lively and Baldoni look like they're in a visionary standoff, Baldoni just revealed he probably won't step back into the role of director if 2022's It Starts With Us is also adapted.

"I think that there are better people for that one," he tells Entertainment Tonight at the August 6 NYC premiere. "I think Blake Lively's ready to direct, that's what I think."

Blake Lively/Instagram

Amid the internet frenzy, people are coming to Baldoni's defense, praising his vulnerable Man Enough podcast. AnIt Ends With Us extra even recounted how kind and attentive he was on set.

And while Lively has always been praised as an "unproblematic queen," fans of the book wish official press for the movie centered on domestic violence awareness as much as Baldoni's one-on-one interviews do. Instead, she's filmed funny baking videos, promoted her Betty Buzz and Blake Brown brands, and encouraged viewers to "wear your florals" to see the movie.

She finally touched on the themes of the movie in an August 13 Instagram story, providing a link to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, while The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Justin Baldoni has hired PR crisis manager Melissa Nathan amid the It Ends With Us drama. Nathan represented Johnny Depp during the 2022 Amber Heard trial.

On September 10, a source told People that Blake Lively felt "surprised," "vulnerable and upset" about all the It Ends With Us drama. "During the promotion of the movie, not one day went by when she was not in the news in an unfavorable light. She's just not used to this kind of drama."

Check back here for updates on the situation.
