12 Tried-and-True Ways to Beat Creative Block

Creative blocks are *the* worst. Like trying to write a post for dear ol’ B+C, switching Spotify playlists every once in awhile, offering to wash the dishes or take out the trash, then returning to the post… See! Creative blocks can really drag you down. But have no fear because we got news for you. We have advice on beating creative block, all courtesy of a few of our favorite makers and artisans. Time to get inspired, folks!

1. Get outside: “Don’t just wait for the inspiration to come to you, but look for it. Go for a walk, see an art exhibit, read a book; do something that is somehow related to your craft or can bring you new ideas just by changing your setting.” – Rossella Manzini of Ross Lab

2. Brainstorm with others: “I find that talking to others about what I’m working on will often give me a fresh perspective. Don’t be afraid to ask for opinions or help!” – Lisa Willis of Missive

3. Keep a list of ideas: “I have an ongoing list of ideas that I jot down in my phone, whenever they come to mind. When I am in a rut, I revisit that list to see if any of them are still interesting to me, and if so, I start sketching or mocking up new prototypes.” – Anna Ritchie of Your Nest Inspired

4. Stay sweet and treat yo’self (sometimes literally!): “I go out and eat chocolate. Normally all I needed was a break. Leave your desk and get your head cleared!” – Melanie Abrantes

5. Look at your work through a different pair of eyes: “I like to watch my daughter explore and learn. Looking at the world through her eyes is refreshing and motivates me to find beauty in the everyday and to play!” – Jella Roson of Honey My Heart(Photo: Kira Kids)

6. Find a creative community: “Have a network of people you trust to look over your work, evaluate it and make suggestions. Your creative community can also help you sift through ideas to come up with something wonderful.” – Brittany Castellano of A Handcrafted Home

7. Sketch it out: “I’m a big fan of sketchbooks and I use them to record everything from rough design sketches to business plan ideas. When I’m feeling stuck or low on ideas I’ll flip through my sketchbook and read through my old notes and drawings. That often sparks new ideas or reminds me of something I didn’t have time to develop before.” – Casey Starks of Vitamini Handmade

8. Learn something new: “Learn something new! We love trying new things, researching specialized tools and checking out different cultures. All these things get you out of your comfort zone. If you are too comfortable you will be making/creaking/writing the same thing over and over.” – 1.61 Soft Goods

9. Meet other makers: “we’re really into getting inspired by, talking to, and experiencing other makers and what they have to offer. We try to travel around as much as possible. And wherever we go, we try to find someone doing their craft — whether that person is a jewelry maker, a bread maker or a boutique hotel owner. We’re always so inspired and filled with endless dreams the more makers we meet.” – Second Sun

10. Explore your city: “Our flavors are guided by the fruits of the season at the farmers’ market. I am truly inspired when I go to the market. If I need a creative break, I head there.” – Amy Deaver of Lemon Bird(Photo: DODOcase)

11. Check creative sources: “I have a library of design books that I turn to. I will flick through as many as possible and let it all go into the melting pot. If time permits, I’ll go to a museum.” – Ben Harris of Drop

12. Ignore the myth: “I try not to buy into the myth of the creative block. I think the more power you give it, the more power it has over you. Creative inspiration is everywhere if we believe it, and when we think rigidly about where inspiration comes from, it limits our ability to see things from new sides.” – Lionheart Prints

Hi there! It’s Sarah Sherman Samuel, interior designer and blogger. I recently moved from LA to Michigan, but a couple weeks ago I had to travel back to LA for work, and I got the chance to zip up north to partner with Cambria Estate Winery! I sat down with their winemaker, Jill Russell, to chat about the art of winemaking and the importance of female leadership at Cambria. I often get asked where I find inspiration and one of my main sources is by learning about a different artistry or craft. Nothing can dig me out of a creative slump quicker than delving into a new type of skill, and I did just that with an afternoon at Cambria.

I drove up from Los Angeles for the day, meandering through roads of open fields and vineyards, stopping for lunch in Los Olivos on the way while very excited for the day ahead. I haven’t been alone in the car sans one or two kids for a very long time, or have been able to do anything alone for that matter, so I really took it all in. Arriving at Cambria, Jill had a wine tasting all set up for me, complete with a beautiful cheese plate from Fromagerie Sophie with wine pairing notes, and we dove right in.

After the tasting, Jill took me on a full tour of the estate, and we dove deeper into the history of Cambria and what it is actually like to be a winemaker (and we tasted grapes, played in the dirt, and took a few Boomerangs…as one does).

Cambria was founded by wine icon Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke in 1986. Their daughters, Katie Jackson and Julia Jackson, grew up among the vines and continue the family business alongside Barbara. Jill was hired as winemaker in June 2017 to continue Cambria’s legacy of talented women winemakers. Cambria has strong women in leadership roles and out in the vineyards, and I thought it was interesting to hear that the female vineyard workers were sometimes preferred, as they were considered to have a more discerning eye and attention to detail when harvesting grapes.

So, what does a typical day look like for a winemaker? According to Jill… it is “Busy!”

From Jill: “During harvest, I arrive at the winery around 5:30am, check in with the teams and get to work calling picks, writing work orders for various fermentation activities including punchdown schedules, yeast additions, and so forth. I’m constantly walking the vineyards, checking the crushpad and making sure things are running smoothly for when grapes come in. Post-harvest, it’s all about the tanks and barrels – here I’m tasting wines, seeing how they’re progressing and running blending trials to determine the final blends for our wines.”

I was curious how one can get creative in the wine business since Jill mentioned that it is part farming, part artistry and part science. She explained how her favorite way to get creative is running new blending trials and the freedom of considering, “What happens if I try this? or this?” There are so many variables to get creative with. Her mind is always thinking of new methods or blends to test out.

As Jill talks about what she strives for in her winemaking, I can’t help but see the parallel in the work I do as a designer, as well as the work of other artists and makers across the board. For example, the search for that harmony or balance. I talk a lot about how I strive for balance in interior spaces —just replace flavors and tannins with visual weight, pattern, and colors, and she could have taken the words right out of my mouth. Then when it comes to “energy,” it is even more apparent. I always want whoever experiences my work to feel something, and feel the love and the story behind it. The same goes for the wine of Cambria. Jill wants the wine to make you feel the energy, and know that the wines you drink from them are lovingly made by a team of passionate wine lovers.

As a fan of Pinot Noir,Julia’s Vineyard has this amazing “Santa Maria Spice” as Jill explains, that isn’t the traditional sweet spice you may find in other red wines, but something a bit more savory like Chinese Five Spice. It really achieves that harmony in texture that Jill is so passionate about it! On the other hand,Katherine’s Chardonnay has this beautiful bright acidity and pretty citrusy floral notes. This isn’t your mother’s oaky, buttery Chardonnay (not that there’s anything wrong with those), but it truly tastes like the place. The tour of the estate and vineyards with Jill really illustrated how these single-vineyard wines are able to showcase the terroir they come from in the glass. This isn’t a blending of flavors from different areas, this is Cambria’s rocks, earth, fog, and wind all neatly captured in a bottle.

Interested in getting into the wine business? I asked Jill if she had any advice for someone who thinks he or she might want to work with wine. Her answer was the same that I often give to people interested in getting into design — and that is to just get working! She advises, “The best thing you can do is get a job at a winery, whether it’s a part-time gig at a tasting room or a full-on harvest internship. No matter where you start, you’ll learn so much about the industry and can start to forge your own path in where you want to work whether it’s in the vineyard, in the cellar, in operations, marketing or working with customers.”

Out of all the celebrity breakups I wasn't expecting, Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes definitely tops the list. They were clearly very close, and Shawn even admitted that all of his songs are about Camila, even the ones he released before they dated! (Okay, cute). The couple split at the end of 2021, but after a very buzzy summer following rumors that Sabrina Carpenter's Short 'n Sweet references their love triangle, Shawn Mendes revealed Camila is still one of his closest friends.

  • Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes dated from 2019-2021, then reportedly reconnected in 2023.
  • Shawn recently opened up about how Camila is "one of my closest best friends."
  • He also reveals she's still the first person he would call in an emergency.

What does Shawn Mendes say about Camila Cabello?

Roy Rochlin/Getty Images for MTV

In a new interview with The New York Times, Shawn Mendes reveals just how much Camila Cabello means to him, and that it “bugs” him that the internet thinks they're “against each other in a weird way.”

"[She's] one of my closest best friends...I have nerves just even speaking about it, just what people would say," he reveals. “But honestly, if something was to happen in my family and if something was to happen to me, she’d probably be the first person I call, to this day...Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way.”

The interview comes after Shawn Mendes spoke on his sexuality (something that, for some reason, has been a topic of conversation on the internet for years), and after the duo was in the spotlight following the release of Sabrina Carpenter's Short 'n Sweet, which seems to reference a love triangle between the three of them. Fans analyzed lyrics like "Oh I leave quite an impression" in "Taste" after Camila Cabello dyed her hair blonde, and "Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs" in "Coincidence" when Camila teased a lyric from "June Gloom" that says "If she's so amazing, why are you on this side of town?"

Have Shawn Mendes and Camila broken up?

Kevin Winter/Getty Images for dcp

This isn't the first time the pair has broken the internet, and one of my favorite moments was when they performed "Señorita" at the AMAs in 2019. The chemistry! The vocals! The audience reactions!

And in November of 2021, the pair made a joint statement (which was posted to their individual Instagram stories) announcing their breakup.

"Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the statement said. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. Camila and Shawn.”

Are Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello together again?

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes might have broken up, but they're definitely still in each other's lives. And there were rumors in 2023 that they had romantically reconnected. “They’ve practically moved in with each other,” an US Weekly sourcesaid last summer. “They each have their own places, but they’re spending every day they can together and traveling together.”

The pair has been spotted together more and more frequently, at Coachella, then at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, and even in the middle of New York City. The Us Weekly source also mentions that “it feels like a new relationship.”

However, according to a new source, the pair has broken up again — this time for good. “Shawn and Camila have a lot of history and they tested the waters again after coming back into each other’s lives," the source told The Sun. "In reality, both of them know they aren’t right for each other romantically and now they just want to move on.”

Despite the will-they-won't-they of it all, it seems like Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello will always be in each other's lives!

When did Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello date?

After being friends for years (and that steamy VMAs performance), Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello dated from 2019-2021.

How old are Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello?

JC Olivera/Getty Images

Shawn Mendes is 26 years old and was born on August 8, 1998, while 27-year-old Camila Cabello was born on March 3, 1997. There's just a one-year age gap between them!
