Weight Training 101: 2 Celeb Trainers Share a Beginner’s Guide to Pumping Iron

As we saw with Cara Delevingne’s recent fitness transformation from supermodel to action hero goddess, a basic set of dumbbells can go a long way when it comes to pumping up your bod. If the closest you’ve come to lifting weights is lugging the groceries home after work, though, you may not know exactly where to begin. Girl, we gotchu. The truth is, you’re probably already doing more than you might think!

Take it from celebrity trainers David Kirsch, who has worked with such megababes as Heidi Klum, Kate Upton, Kelly Ripa, and Harley Pasternak, whose client list runs the gamut from Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga to Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry.

The Preparation

We asked the trainers to give us the lowdown on how to get started with our very own at-home small space gym we could even squeeze into our tiny apartments, beginning with equipment — or lack thereof. All you really need to get going, Kirsch says, is a positive mindset. “For me, the idea of exercise is countering potential excuses that people come up with for not working out,” he shares. “You don’t need the perfect dumbbells or exercise mat. It’s great if you have it, but if not, [use] what you have!” Case in point? On a recent vacay, Kirsch used an 8oz. water bottle as weight substitute. That’s not the first time he’s gotten creative either. “[When] my girls (six-year-old daughters Emilia and Francesca) were younger, I’d use them as weights,” he laughs.

“[In almost] everything that you do, you’re moving your body, [and if] you’re moving your body, you’re exercising,” Kirsch says. Even everyday activities, such as mopping, can help you to build muscle. “Mopping, [for instance], works your arms, biceps and triceps.” Swiffering too, y’all ;)

No matter what you choose to bulk up with, make sure it’s suitable for you and your needs. As Pasternak says, no one size fits all, and what works for one person might not work as well for someone else. He points to factors such as “…your injury status, your coordination [and] your exercise history” when determining what type of weight to use. “Maybe you’re someone that’s played other sports that have strengthened you in different ways,” he says. That might make you a candidate for a slightly heavier weight. Overall, Pasternak recommends that beginners start with anywhere from no weights (using their own body instead) to 10lb. weights. Kirsch, for one, says he also prefers solid dumbbells to those that are plated. “I feel safer,” he says.

You’re almost ready to begin, but before you go lifting those bad boys willy nilly, Pasternak recommends seeing a trainer, or, at the very least, pulling up a Youtube video to check out correct weight-lifting form. Both men also strongly advocate setting up shop in front of a mirror to check that your body is properly in line and to help get you prepped for your workout. “I find it motivational,” Kirsch says. “It helps you establish that mind/body connection, which is so, so important.”

The Equipment

All you REALLY need is a basic set of dumbbells ($21). Almost too easy…

The Exercises

Once you’re all geared up and good to go, you can go ahead and get started with one of these tried and true exercises as shared by Kirsch and Pasternak. Do them in order or mix it up – both men wholeheartedly agree that mixing up your routine is key. “I would probably train each muscle once a week,” Pasternak says.

Try Shoulder Presses: “I’d probably start with a lighter weight [here],” Kirsch begins. Then, once you’ve checked your form, maintain a natural grip on the dumbbell. “Hold [them] at shoulder width distance at shoulder height,” he says. With your knees slightly bent, Kirsh says to extend your arms and then retract them, “really focusing on your shoulders” as opposed to your abs. Repeat for 10-15 reps. (via Kirsch)

Try Single-Arm Dumbbell Rows: Beginning in a lunge position, place your left knee forward and extend your right leg all the way back. Keeping your arms down, hold the dumbbell in your right hand. Place your left forearm on your left thigh for support, then slowly pull your right arm back in a controlled manner, dragging your elbow along your ribs. Switch so that your right knee is forward and your left leg is all the way back. Hold the dumbbell in your left arm and repeat above process. (via Pasternak)

Try Situps With Dumbbells: “Lie on an exercise mat or a towel and have your legs straight out,” Kirsch says. From there, holding a three-pound dumbbell and your arms out over your head, sit up. Those who aren’t quite as strong or with lower back issues can do an easier variation of this exercise by keeping your knees bent and doing crunches over full sit ups. (via Kirsch)

Try Dumbbell Side Bends: Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width. Hold a dumbbell or a jug of water in your right arm. Bend your left arm so that your fingers touch your left temple. From there, tip over (like a teapot) while sliding the dumbbell up your body. Switch sides, doing an equal number of reps on each. (via Pasternak)

The Results

While you might not see results right away (Pasternak and Kirsch estimate one to several months), Kirsch says you’ll begin to feel better almost immediately. “[Clients] immediately start feeling more positive and optimistic and even looking at food in a different way,” he tells us. That’s a good thing, because according to Pasternak, how you eat can be just as key to achieving your dream results as your actual workout. “It really depends on your diet more than anything,” he says.

But don’t rush full speed ahead in an effort to combat those cheese fries. “Move at the same pace as you move [in] everyday life,” Pasternak suggests. “If something feels wrong, painful or uncomfortable…[stop]. Exercise is not supposed to feel wrong.” We definitely hear that.

Happy birthday Rory Gilmore! Like the true Gilmore Girls fall gal she is, Rory's birthday is in the best autumn month: October. The bookworm would turn 40 on October 8 this year, and this milestone birthday had me thinking about Rory's 16th birthday. On a recent rewatch, I noticed one thing about the scene I'd never seen before: when Alexis leans over to blow out the candles on Rory's birthday cake, her boa almost catches on fire until Keiko Agena (who played Lane Kim on the series) saves it at the last moment!

What episode is Rory's 16th birthday?

Warner Bros. TV

In "Rory's Birthday Parties" (Gilmore Girls season 1, episode 6), Rory's turning 16 and both Lorelai and Emily have very different ideas of how they can celebrate. Emily and Richard throw Rory a posh get together, complete with all the Chilton students who don't actually like her, while Lor gathers the residents of Stars Hollow for a laidback party.

Sookie makes a delicious cake with Rory's face on it, and when Rory leans over the blow out the candles, there's a moment when her feather boa (and a bit of Alexis Bledel's hair) get a little too close to the fire. Good thing Keiko Agena swoops in to save the day!

Warner Bros. TV

This is one of my favorite Gilmore Girls episodes because it perfectly balances the zaniness of Stars Hollow (seen in Sookie's hilarious birthday cake) with something everyone can take part in, even if we can't visit Lorelai and Rory ;).

When is Rory Gilmore's birthday?

Warner Bros. TV

Rory Gilmore's birthday is October 8, 1984! That technically makes her a part of Gen X, but you know she's still our millennial queen!

What's Rory Gilmore's zodiac sign?

Warner Bros. TV

Rory Gilmore is a Libra, which makes SO much sense! She craves peace and harmony, but sometimes her inability to choose sides really gets her into trouble. Rory could honestly pro/con list her life until the end of time, but thankfully she has folks in her corner to eventually get her out of her own head.

How old was Lorelai when Rory was 16?

Warner Bros. TV

Lorelai had Rory when she was 16 years old, so on Rory's 16th birthday, Lorelai is 32.

In what episode does Rory turn 17?

Warner Bros. TV

Since Rory's 16th birthday party is in season 1, her 17th birthday would be in season 2. We know that Lorelai and Max were supposed to get married at the end of summer, which means season 2, episode 3, "Red Light on the Wedding Night," in which Lorelai calls off the wedding, would take probably place around the end of August, while episode 10, "The Bracebridge Dinner," is around Christmastime. My guess is Rory's 17th birthday is around episode 6 or 7.

Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.

Why Your Flexibility Stalls

Brit + Co

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

Brit + Co

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

Brit + Co

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

Brit + Co

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

Brit + Co

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! You might never get your legs behind your head, but your older self will thank you for it. Check out The Best Time to Stretch During Your Workout for more!

Miracles happen once in a while, which is apparent because The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works at Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's been 20 years since we last saw Mia, Lily, and Queen Clarisse (and since all three took part in one of the greatest birthday party scenes in film history. Tons of snacks! Karaoke! Mattress surfing!).

The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 remain heartfelt, uplifting, and empowering, and we'll never get tired of them. Plus, the resurgence of Y2K pop culture just makes dressing up like Mia more fun than it already was. While much of this reported film (including the cast) is still rumor-only, we do have a few tidbits to share and will keep updating as news is released.

Who's in The Princess Diaries 3 cast?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Anne Hathaway finally confirmed her return to the world of Genovia with an Instagram video in early October. But will Chris Pine be joining her?

"I don't know anything," the actor said on The Today Show on October 8. "Call Disney. Call Bob Iger. The answer is honestly I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic."

Chris' character Nicholas Devreaux, and his relationship with Mia in Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was a lot of millennial and Gen Z viewers' first enemies-to-lovers relationship, and it's safe to say we've never been the same. While Chris Pine claims he has no clue whether he'll return, his recent haircut (which is very similar to Nicholas') has fans calling his bluff.

"I need Chris Pine to return as Nicholas Devereaux looking like this in Princess Diaries 3, and I will not be taking questions at this time," one X user tweeted, while another agrees, "oh he's definitely already taping the 3rd movie as we speak and you can't convince me otherwise."

Julie Andrews and Raven-Symoné have also been a part of the franchise, but there's no word on whether they'd return either. In December of 2022, Variety reported that Julie Andrews doubts that she'll be able to return to the franchise, but we're still holding out hope!

Stay tuned for the official Princess Diaries 3 cast list!

When is the Princess Diaries 3 release date?

Walt Disney Studios

Rom-com fans will be thrilled to know Adele Lim, who worked on Crazy Rich Asians (one of the best rom-coms of the 21st Century) will direct. We don't have a release date yet, but it appears pre-production has begun. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl and Quantum Leap writer Aadrita Mukerji is working on the script, and producer Debra Martin Chase (who worked on the first two films) is returning to produce. We're all in favor of women behind the scenes, so this news gets two thumbs up from us!

Anne Hathaway (whose new movie The Idea Of You is streaming on Prime Video now) recently revealed the movie's development is going very well. “We’re in a good place,” she tells V Magazine. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

What has Anne Hathaway said about Julie Andrews?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

In her recent cover story with Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway talks about how working with Julie Andrews changed her life forever. “She respected that [fans] had a relationship to her work that spanned their entire lives and made it a beautiful experience for them,” she says of Julie stopping to sign autographs every day during The Princess Diaries. “I don’t know that I was always capable of that. So I’ve learned that I want to handle myself in a way that I’m going to be proud of at a later date.”

Anne also has a major appreciation for howThe Princess Diaries franchise as a whole turned her life upside down. "This was the film that changed my life," she says. "It felt so big at the time, and it wound up being so big, and it's kind of just gotten bigger as my life has progressed...So this is a total fusion of life and work, and all the things, and I'm just so proud to be in this movie."

What is The Princess Diaries 3 about?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

We don't have an official script, but according to sources, the film might continue the storyline from the previous two movies. Based on the books by Meg Cabot, both films follow Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), an awkward high schooler who learns she is next in line to be queen of Genovia. Makeovers, royal balls, romance, and tons of fun follow.

Gary Marshall, the director of the first two movies who passed away in 2016, told People that one idea he shared with Anne Hathaway was to set The Princess Diaries 3 in the big city: "It looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan." As someone who lives in New York City, I might be biased, but setting the story in Manhattan would be INCREDIBLE. Would Mia hang out at the Met? Would the movie feature any nods to The Devil Wears Prada? Anne Hathaway, if you need another background extra, hit me up!

Where can you watch The Princess Diaries 3?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

It's TBD whether this film would release in theaters or on streaming, but you can watch both The Princess Diariesand The Princess Diaries 2on Disney+ now ;).

What's the Princess Diaries cast saying?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Don't fret, Princess Diaries fans, Chris Pine is TOTALLY on board for a Genovian reunion. "Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it," Pine told Entertainment Tonight. "Give me a phone call or an email."

The actor (and our personal crush) played Lord Nicholas Deveraux in 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Deveraux rivaled Anne Hathaway's Princess Mia Thermopolis for the throne, becoming her friend and love interest.

Recently, Hathaway toldPeople that the a third installment in the franchise was still in development and far from production, but it was "thrilling" to "see the level of excitement for it." However, while the movie industry gears turn slowly, she is still very much advocating for the long-awaited three-quel.

While I love a good lipstick, sometimes you need something that's a little more understated and a lot more hydrating — that's where tinted lip balms come in. These are absolutely perfect for the coming colder months, giving you an opportunity to add a little color to your face, while also being practical and moisturizing in the face of harsh, chilly winds. So if you've ever thought to yourself, "The best tinted lip balm doesn't exist," get ready! Here are all the tinted lip balms we're obsessed with right now!

What's the most popular tinted lip balm?

Amazon

From what I've seen, Burt's Bee's Tinted Lip takes the cake! It was mentioned so many times on Reddit that I lost count. Meant to offer 8 hours of hydration, it's formulated with beeswax and is free of parabens, petrolatum, SLS, and phtalates! You can also find shea butter in the formula which adds to the moisturized feeling this claims to give.

If you're still not convinced, take a look at what customers are actually saying about this tinted lip balm.

What are people really saying about it?

Burt's Bees

You can count on customers to give their honest opinions, especially if those reviews are coming from Reddit. Here's what stood out to me about this tinted lip balm:

  • "I love Burt’s bees tinted lip balm. I use it all the time year round."
  • "Burt's Bees is my ride or die, so much so that I keep spare tubes in my backpack, purse and at home haha."
  • "Just tried Burt’s bees lip balm in shade Hibiscus…loved it!"
  • "It's got a nice amount of color and shine to look put together but it doesn't look like you are trying hard.

I've mentioned how much I love Summer Fridays before, but it hadn't dawned on me to give their lip butter balm a chance yet. You and I may be looking for the best tinted lip balm, but Maybelline's version of it is considered a 'balmy blush' for the lips. As far as I'm concerned, it still does everything we're looking for. It glides on like a lipstick, but it offers a buttery feel that leaves behind a touch of color that makes it look like your lips are blushing...hence the name.

Let's just say it'll get you through a full of classes, work, and happy hour with you friends.

This lip balm is made with acai extracts and avocado oils without the aid of petrolatum, parrafins, parabens, synthetic fragrances, silicones, or mineral oils. Whew! Try saying that in one breath!

Don't be alarmed by the name because this is still a conditioning and nourishing lip balm. It's just a little shinier than most formulas! I personally love the heart-shaped center because it feels like a nod to the care that e.l.f. usually puts into it's products.

You're essentially going to to get a 2-for-1 deal because this lip balm because the outer portion of it provides the sheer color you're craving while the interior is full of ingredients like Vitamin E. How fun is that?
