How to Do Laundry Without Ruining All of Your Clothes

We spend a lot of time worrying about whether or not we have the “right” clothes. Maybe you’re guilty of over-ordering from your favorite online boutique so you can try everything on in the privacy of your own home, or maybe you just spend a little more time than you’d like to admit browsing Pinterest for seasonal trends to make sure you’re following them without looking like you’re trying too hard. Even those of us who don’t cop to being “fashionable” have been at fashion’s mercy at least once in a while, and we have a closet full of clothes to show for it. (It may also be time to offload some of that clothing, but that’s a topic for another time.)

Once you go through the effort to collect that wardrobe, though, are you taking good care of it? Somewhat ironically, cleaning your clothes can often damage them. You may have mastered Laundry 101 somewhere around your sophomore year of high school, but the devil is most certainly in the details here, and everyone could use a refresher in the basics. Keep reading for tips on how you can successfully launder all those fab fashions without totally destroying them. You — and your wallet — will thank us!

  • Do I have to sort my laundry? To sort or not to sort is one of the most oft-debated questions in the world of laundry. What have we determined? You don’t need to, but doing so will reduce the likelihood of you bleaching out your clothes or damaging the fabric, because it will force you to use different water temperatures and cycles based on color and whether or not the pieces are delicates. But if you’re in a rush and willing to risk a less-than-perfect result, you can probably skip the sort.
  • When should I use different water temperatures? Use hot water for your whites and anything super dirty (you know exactly where those nasty gym clothes belong) and cold water for bright or dark colors that tend to bleed, as well as delicate fabrics. Warm water should be used for most other clothes: jeans, knits, synthetic fibers, and anything that falls somewhere between whites and darks on the color spectrum.
  • How much detergent do I really need? We know it seems like the more soap, the better, but the truth is thatexcess suds in your clothes can lead to bacteria buildup. Resist the urge to top out on detergent and instead follow the product’s recommendations for a standard load (an average load is between six and seven pounds). If you’re working with more clothes than that or if you have hard water, you can add a little extra detergent to the cap. Otherwise, practice moderation.
  • Is there a certain order I should use to fill my washer? Yes! First clothes, then water, then soap. Older detergent formulas included phosphates, which meant that clothes needed to be added at the end, but no more!
  • How should I use bleach? If your whites are starting to look a little gray and ragged, use approximately 1/2 cup of bleach on top of your normal detergent. Reserve specific loads for bleach, and do not mix these clothes with non-white items while you wash. Feel like your whites are constantly needing a little extra TLC? Studies have shown that bleach doesn’t speed up fabric deterioration, so you can use it regularly on your whites.

  • What makes something a delicate? Delicates include lingerie, washable silks, lace, cashmere, thin knits, and pieces with sequins. Anything labeled or tagged as “hand-wash only” or “delicate” also falls in this category (duh).
  • Can I wash all of my delicates together? If you’re ambitious enough to take on the cleaning of your own delicates (most of us just send ’em out!), you should avoid the rookie mistake of throwing them all into the washing machine together. Sort by type or fabric to avoid damage. Combining lace and sequins in the same load, for example, can cause snagging. Generally speaking, the more you sort your items, the more likely they are to wind up in the correct water temperature and cycle.
  • Do I have to take dry-clean-only clothes to the dry cleaner? They say rules are made to be broken, but if you’re going to go wild and handle your dry-clean only clothes at home, you should definitely follow some insider tips. It’s risky, but you can try cleaning wool, silk, cotton, linen, and durable polyester at home. To do it safely, turn the items inside out, put them in a mesh bag, and use a mild detergent. Once you pull them out of the washing machine, do not put them in the dryer. Instead, lay them flat out to dry as soon as the wash cycle is finished. All that being said, though, your best bet with dry-clean-only clothes is still to take them to a trusty professional.
  • What fabrics should I never put in the washing machine? Suede, leather, velvet, taffeta, and rayon don’t belong in your at-home washing machine. You should also avoid washing anything made with fur or down.

Other random tips: Get ready for a lightning round of random laundry suggestions: Zip your zippers all the way to avoid snagging. Wash button-down shirts with the buttons undone. Put socks in the washer first so they don’t get tangled in other garments (say goodbye to hours of sock hunting).

When I moved into my first home, I noticed an interesting trend: my guests kept gifting me cleaning supplies. I turned to my BFF and asked, "Should I be offended?" After all, I’d always thought of myself as tidy and organized — but deep cleaning? That wasn’t exactly my thing.

Granted, I was going through a major life change and cleaning my home wasn't a top priority, but I clearly got the hint. During a recent visit, my mom shared a few game-changing tips for cleaning my washing machine and dishwasher (spoiler: all you need is vinegar!). Since then, I've picked up more tricks to tackle the tub, oven, and beyond.

So, here’s a comprehensive cleaning guide to help you kick off the holidays and 2025 with a clean slate and home.

Monthly: Clean Your Washing Machine

Rachel Claire

There's this common misconception that washing machines are always clean just by running loads of laundry. I learned the hard way, not true. Over time, detergent residues, fabric softener, and minerals from the water build up in your washing machine, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Yuck! To keep your clothes and linens smelling fresh and truly clean, a monthly deep clean is a must.

How to Clean It: Once a month, run an empty hot water cycle with a cup of distilled white vinegar. This will help break down any buildup inside the drum, as well as eliminate any bacteria. For front-loading machines, don’t forget to clean the rubber gasket around the door where mold loves to hide. I just did this and it was frankly, gross, but so satisfying in the end. Wipe it down with a mixture of vinegar and water, and let it air dry.

Monthly: Clean Your Dishwasher

You and your partner may argue over how you load the dishes, but have either of you actually cleaned it? Dishwashers, like washing machines, build up icky grime over time from food particles and soap scum, causing a stink and making your dishwasher work less well. A quick monthly clean can keep it in top shape.

How to Clean It: Pour a cup of vinegar inside and run a hot water cycle with no dishes. Afterward, sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run another cycle. This combo will help remove lingering smells and make your dishwasher sparkle.

Biannually: Clean Your Oven

Liliana Drew

If you're not using your oven for big meals all the time, twice a year is usually enough cleaning it will need (whew!). Otherwise, every few months will do the trick. Cleaning off all that baked-on grease and food residue with a biannual clean will keep it working more efficiently and ready for your next festive feast.

How to Clean It: Create a thick paste with baking soda and water, then apply it to the inside of the oven, avoiding heating elements. Let it sit overnight, and then wipe away the grime. Finish by spraying a little vinegar to tackle any remaining residue. You can also try a store-bought oven cleaner that works in minutes like Easy-Off.

Every 3 Months: Clean Hard To Reach Places

Shutterstock

Sometimes, it’s the places we don’t see that need the most attention: under the fridge, behind the couch, and in vents. A thorough dusting every three months will keep allergens at bay.

How to Clean: If you don't already have a robot vacuum, use a standup vacuum with a hose attachment or a microfiber cloth to reach these spots. For vents, remove covers and gently wash them in warm, soapy water. Replace disposable filters every three months too.

Weekly: Tub and Shower

Kaboompics.com

My least favorite room to clean: bathrooms, which tend to build up mold and mildew quickly due to all the moisture. A quick weekly clean can prevent buildup, while a monthly deep clean will ensure everything stays sparkling and germ-free.

How to Clean: I recently discovered Rejuvenate Soap Scum Remover for my shower glass doors and it works great. For your tub and shower, you can use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar as a natural scrub. Spray the surfaces with vinegar, sprinkle baking soda over them, and scrub with a brush or simply use your favorite all-purpose cleaner like Method or Meyers. Rinse well. Also, keep a squeegee in your shower to reduce buildup over time.

Weekly: Bed Sheets

Tatiana Syrikova

There's nothing better than climbing into your bed with freshly cleaned sheets. You should wash your bed sheets once a week, or every two weeks at most. If you sweat a lot in your sleep or suffer from major allergies, try to clean more often than that.

How to Clean: When washing your sheets, use a paraben-free and dye-free detergent like Seventh Generation or Arm & Hammer Free & Clear, especially if you have sensitive skin and wash your pillowcases and bed sheets at the same time to keep dirt at bay.

Seasonally: Windows

Nathan Fertig

Cleaning your windows every fall and spring can make a huge difference in brightening your home with more natural light and help you enjoy a better view. You won't regret it!

How to Clean: Use your favorite glass cleaner or put a few drops of dish soap in a warm bucket of water. First, wipe the frames with a dry cloth or a brush to remove dust and debris. Then using a sponge, start from the top and work down to lift off dirt, fingerprints, and grime. Use a squeegee for a streak-free finish, and a clean microfiber cloth (to prevent lint) to dry any remaining water droplets around the edges.

Here's to a happy, healthy clean home! My last two tips: Bring in air-purifying plants to naturally clean your indoor air and pretty up your home. And for pots and pans that still show burnt marks, I found a sprinkling of Bar Keepers Friend with a nice scrub does the trick!

Now that Halloween is officially over, it’s time to lean into all things holiday cheer. My favorite way to get into the Christmas spirit is decorating my space to match all the cookie decorating parties, gift wrapping sessions, and holiday cocktail hours to come this winter. But I’m one to do this on a budget – I often hit the thrift store for Christmas decor. When I’m not there, I’m scouring Amazon for pieces that are cute, but still take it easy on my wallet.

These are the best Amazon Christmas decorations I found that don’t cost an arm and a leg, but rival styles you’d find at more upscale stores like Anthropologie and Nordstrom:

Amazon

Peiduo Small LED Light Birch Trees

These tiny trees lit by twinkly LED lights are perfect for topping your mantle or dinner table. I think they add just the right amount of whimsy to your space, no matter how you decorate with them! They're not necessarily Christmas-specific, either. Their simple design allows you to spruce 'em up in all kinds of ways year-round. Similar pieces at Target and Anthropologie range from $21 $68 for one tree, but you can get two trees for just $25 on Amazon right now.

Amazon

Plaid Throw Pillow Covers

Plaid – specifically red plaid – is timeless when it comes to Christmas decor. It never fails to make a space extra cozy! These 18x18-inch covers are perfect for throw pillows on your bed and couch alike. You can snag this set of 2 in a few other holiday-ready colorways for just $10, and they'll likely last you a while with the right care.

    Amazon

    Artgar Real Touch Pine Garland

If you have a mantle, use it! A mantle is prime real estate for Christmas decorations like stockings, candles, and cards – but none of that is truly complete without a good garland! This 6-foot faux pine garland can easily span your mantle to fill in any negative space and simply make things cozier. It comes with attached LED lights (no wall plug necessary, just a few batteries) as well as pinecone accents to make the garland itself feel fuller. Plus, $30 isn't so bad for a statement piece like this!

    Amazon

    Vintage Bow Decorative Tray

This piece reminds me of a tray Pottery Barn Teen and LoveShackFancy sells in their collaborative collection, except it literally costs $60 less. It's not a total dupe, but the one thing it does have in common is bows: the most adorable reference to gifting season! I think this $9 pick could be so cute as a serving platter for Christmas desserts or even as a festive catchall you keep on your coffee table throughout the holidays.

    Amazon

Kate Aspen Retro Floral Drinking Glasses

The intricate design on these green-tinted glasses really has me hooked. They'd look so good with any sort of Christmas party tablescape – as long as you're sipping Christmas cocktails out of them! A similar set of 6 is currently being sold on Quince for $48. This one's only $26.

It may be Taylor Swift's birthday today, but she did so much sweet celebrating at the Children's Mercy Kansas City Hospital yesterday! The ever-iconic pop star popped in to surprise some of the patients, signing Eras Tour books, petting dogs, and much more! Here's everything you need to know about how she rang in the eve her 35th year!

See Taylor Swift's adorable visit at the Children's Hospital!

Thx @Taylor Swift for making his day!!!! 🥺🥰

On December 12, 2024, Taylor Swift made her way to Children's Mercy Kansas City Hospital and totally surprised the adorable patients! They did everything from sing together, sign her newly-released Eras Tour Book, and share their favorite songs and stories together. When one child even said, "I like Travis now," Taylor had an adorably cheeky reply.

She said, "Yes, me too. That's an absolute yes on that one."

In every single video and photo, you can see the kids beaming from ear-to-ear with joy.

    www.tiktok.com

    Okay im definitely a swifty nowww💗💗💗#taylorswift #fyp #fy #fypシ #vi #traviskelce @Taylor Swift

She even made a TikTok dancing to her hit, "Bad Blood" with two teens in a hospital room. The video starts out with the kids dancing to the song, with them parting for Taylor to do her big reveal — by sliding open the hospital room curtain and strutting forward. The trio then dance and lip sync together, clearly having quite a good time.

Taylor even found the time to pose with the hospital therapy dog, Queen Jelly. And as for Jelly? She seemed unphased by the star in her midst... but that's probably because she's royalty, herself. 😉

While I'm sure Taylor's set to have a huge celebration for her special day tonight, I love that she closed out her 34th trip around the sun in such a sweet, thoughtful way. Here's to making more silly TikToks, more kids smile, and helping those in need — it's what Taylor Swift would do!

We might just be getting into the holiday spirit, but for the Radio City Rockettes, it's been Christmastime since September! In addition to a very enlightening game of This or That, twins Caitlin and Courtney Sullivan gave Brit + Co an inside look at what it's like to be a Rockette — and what they do the rest of the year. Consider this the perfect trivia for your Christmas dinner after you've mastered that Rockette red lip ;).

Here are 12 surprising things about being a Radio City Rockette.

    1. Rehearsing for the Christmas season is a full-time job.

    MSG Entertainment

Once the holidays roll around, the Radio City Rockette shows might last 90 minutes, but prepping for the season is a full work week. "The rehearsal season itself is six weeks long, six hours a day, six days a week," Courtney says. "So it is a long process and I feel like the rehearsals itself are like a bonding experience for us."

    2. The Radio City Rockettes get some serious bonding time.

    MSG Entertainment

"You spend a lot of time with the girls around you and within Radio City, our dressing rooms too," Courteney says of the Rockette rehearsal schedule. "I feel like that's the time when you really get to form those bonds with your sisters and really create magic that can be seen on stage too."

"Yeah, once we move into Radio City, this becomes your family, truly," Caitlin adds. "We spend every day, day in day out together, we spend the holidays together. So you naturally just become very close with everyone."

Each Rockette dresses up her getting-ready station.

    MSG Entertainment

"Everybody dresses up their station to make it feel very homey," Caitlin says. "I like lots of like decor and festive lights, candles, all that fun stuff."

The women love to have treats in their dressing rooms!

    MSG Entertainment

I'm literally snacking on a chocolate bar as I type this, and I'm not the only one who likes to have sweets on-hand! "I love Christmas cookies," Caitlin says. "We will do something with our dressing room and bring in treats every day. I feel like someone's bringing in something new."

The Radio City Rockettes perform up to 200 shows at Christmas.

    MSG Entertainment

"The Rockettes perform up to 200 shows in a season, and the way that each show feels so special and individual, it's just amazing how you never know who's out in the audience seeing the show for the first time," Courtney says. "And the way the ladies in the line put their best foot forward every single time is so inspiring and made me want to give even more."

"It just really amazes me how dedicated and how hard working all the Rockettes are," Caitlin agrees. "And I think we always knew that, but then once you're in it, you have a whole new level of respect for how hard all these women work."

And each Rockette can perform in up to 4 shows a day!

    MSG Entertainment

"I think sometimes people don't realize we can do up to four shows in the day, which is unreal and amazing," Caitlin says. "That might be a surprise to people when they're coming to a show. They might think we just have that one that day, but we actually might have two, three, or four in the day, which is pretty amazing."

But the Rockettes also find time to goof off.

    MSG Entertainment

The Rockettes might be known for their precision, but Courtney promises their smiles are real! "We are having so much fun," Courtney says. "It's really just an amazing feeling to be on stage and we find times to laugh and joke around, but really obviously give our all to our craft. And I think people don't realize like we are really having an amazing time on and off stage."

The Radio City Rockettes really support one another.

    MSG Entertainment

As you can imagine, a career as a Rockette comes with its challenges, but the ladies on the line always support each other. "I was really proud last year was our first season together and just to complete one full season is such an accomplishment," Courtney says. "I feel like we're ready to take it on again and know like we absolutely can do it. And with the support of everyone around us too, you know, you're going to get through the entire holiday season and you're gonna come out even stronger."

The Radio City Rockettes can work a bunch of jobs during the summer.

    MSG Entertainment

The Rockettes have a busy schedule during Christmas — but that doesn't mean they kick up their feet the rest of the year! "Every person on the line has a very diverse background and they go to different job opportunities throughout the year," Courtney says. "People are pulled in different directions when the holiday season is over. The Rockettes do work year-round [with] different opportunities."

"We're always looking to continue to dance and work on our precision," she continues. "The summer though, our favorite thing is to go to the beach. We're from New Jersey and the Jersey shore is like our home. So if we're not dancing, you can definitely find us relaxing on the sand."

The best thing about performing New York City can also be the most challenging.

    MSG Entertainment

You know how, when people talk about New York, they say, "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere?" That's because it's hard to live here y'all!

"This is just the city that never sleeps," Caitlin says. "There are people everywhere. It's always alive. There's just something magical about New York and I love that. And I think that could come with the biggest challenge as well: the city that never sleeps. You feel like you're going, going, going at all times. But that's pretty exciting to do at our age, living out our dreams. I feel like that will never get old."

"I feel like we have no complaints here!" Courtney adds.

Even as a Radio City Rockette, the work is never done.

    MSG Entertainment

"I feel like there's always room for improvement," Courtney says. "Even today, as we're living at our dream, we're continuously working on our technique and our precision and going back to our foundation, I think the work is never done and you can continue to dream and accomplish some of those really major goals."

"Yeah, the work is never done is I think is kind of our motto," Caitlin adds. "Just keep, keep pushing, keep driving and just keep dreaming. And never give up."

The Rockettes are like one big family.

    MSG Entertainment

Just like so many of our favorite TV show and movie casts, the Rockettes love to bond! "The Rockettes truly feel like a sisterhood and we are so lucky that we are real sisters on the line together," Caitlin says, adding that to dance "with your sister is everything we always hoped for."

And those connections make a magical experience like New York at Christmas even more magical. "[To] be welcomed with open arms has been such a dream come true for us," Courtney says. "We just love the holiday season and to celebrate it at Radio City, I feel like I can't imagine anything better."
