The 27 Best Podcasts On Spotify Right Now

the best podcasts on spotify

Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone has a podcast these days? As it turns out, there are over 5 million podcasts in existence as of 2023 — wild! This number only stands to increase as more and more creators discover the magic of audio storytelling and look to expand their reach to new channels and audiences.

As a former podcast producer, I love staying up to date on the latest podcast trends and keeping tabs on the shows that are generating buzz and topping the charts. If you're in a bit of a podcast rut and need some new show inspiration, or you want something fresh to listen to on your RTO commute, I've recapped the 27 best podcasts on Spotify right now.

Unlock the ultimate podcast playlist with must-hear gems on celebrity gossip and pop culture (think Call Her Daddy and Not Skinny But Not Fat), thought-provoking scientific exploration (like Huberman Lab and Ologies), and TV rewatch podcasts and current events (The Succession Podcast and The Daily, to name a few). Keep reading and you just might find your new favorite podcast.

Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper

Call Her Daddy is ranked number two on the Spotify podcast charts (and it's the most listened to show by women) for good reason — host Alex Cooper gives an unfiltered look at her personal life and is known for candid and raw celebrity interviews with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Cole Sprouse. Cooper was reportedly paid $60,000,000 for her three-year podcast deal with Spotify — making her one radio mogul to watch.

Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain

Gen Z darling Emma Chamberlain launched a near stream-of-conscious show where she talks about everything from minimalism, dopamine detoxes, marriage, Coachella fashion, and whatever else comes to mind. Expect advice, interviews, and an up-close-and-personal look inside the mind of one of this generation's top creators.

Celebrity Memoir Book Club

If you don't have time to dive into the latest and juiciest celeb read, hosts and comedians Claire Parker and Ashley Hamilton have you covered. Each week, they break down the funniest bits and need-to-know passages from new and iconic celebrity memoirs from the likes of Prince Harry, Amy Poehler, Sophia Amoruso and more.

Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

The premise behind this new podcast on Spotify is that we should pass the mic to older women more often. So every week, Seinfeld and VEEP icon Julia Louis-Dreyfus sits down with other legendary women who are in the later chapters of their lives to glean all of their incredible wisdom.

We Said What We Said With Rickey & Denzel

Longtime besties Rickey Thompson and Denzel Dion share hot takes on today's trends and offer up personal tidbits about their dating lives, careers, and more in this spicy and fun show.

Normal Gossip

Let's be real — gossip can be fun, especially when it's low stakes and has absolutely nothing to do with your own life. Kelsey McKinney (host) and Alex Sujong Laughlin (producer) curate quite the collection of guests to hop on their show, talk about their relationship to gossip in general, and dig into a very involved piece of gossip they heard from a "friend of a friend." The amount of times I've literally LOL'd throughout episodes is...exponential.

The A24 Podcast

If you're already obsessed with A24 flicks like Everything Everywhere All At Once, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, Moonlight, and more, you pretty much need this podcast in your life. There are no hosts, no ads, and no rules, so just about anything can happen.

Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

This ranks high as a personal favorite podcast thanks to Dax Shepard and co-host Monica Padman's easy-going interview style with mega-watt celebrities. Recent guests include Paris Hilton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Alison Roman, Jenna Ortega and lots more. Tune in for a healthy dose of armchair therapy, emotional exploration, and plenty of giggles in between.

The Daily

From The New York Times, The Daily is a bite-sized show which breaks down the top news stories of the day from hosts Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise. It drops everyday by 6 a.m. which makes it an ideal car listen if you're a commuter and is generally helpful in keeping you up to date on the most relevant world news.

Succession Podcast with Kara Swisher

Our Sundays pretty much revolve around the ground-breaking HBO TV series,Succession, so it's only natural to jump into the corresponding podcast as well. Kara Swisher brings on show-runner Jesse Armstrong, among other top executives, writers, and actors from the hit series to offer behind-the-scenes details about each episode. The insights are mind-expanding and deliver a whole new perspective on the Roy family. Plus, once the show inevitably comes to its season four conclusion, you can go back and listen to feed your withdrawal symptoms.

Work Appropriate with Anne Helen Peterson

I will consume anything Anne Helen Peterson creates, be it her think pieces on millennial burnout or her viral and resonate tweets. So it's no surprise I jumped right into her new podcast which tackles such topics as what to do when your industry is failing, how to care about your job less, and how to manage remote work the right way. Each episode delivers practical career and work advice you can take to heart.

You're Wrong About with Sarah Marshall

Host Sarah Marshall demystifies all the hot topics you think you know everything about, from Princess Diana and the O.J. Simpson trial to how the world became obsessed with email. Each episode will energize your mind with new learnings and perspectives without trying too hard. Might I add this podcast is great for road trip binging.

Slow Stories with Rachel Schwartzmann

Slow Stories explores living, working, and creating more intentionally in our digital age. Each episode features a conversation with a leading artist, writer, or innovator about their work and brings to light ideas on how we can slow down and find meaning in our lives. The show is hosted by Rachel Schwartzmann, a writer and editor who thoughtfully explores the intersection of creativity and technology. Schwartzmann believes that we can use technology to connect with each other and create meaningful experiences, but that we also need to be mindful of the ways in which technology can be used to distract us and keep us from living our lives fully.

Not Skinny But Not Fat

Host Amanda Hirsch is brimming with pop culture hot takes and celebrity goss in this fun weekly listen. Archetypes with Meghan Markle

Host Meghan Markle upends all the labels that try to hold women back in this revelatory conversation podcast. She talks activism with Jameela Jamil, the "angry Black woman" stereotype with Issa Rae and Ziwe, the stigmas of being single with Mindy Kaling, limitless ambition with Serena Williams, and numerous other topical concepts that are worth delving into on a deeper level.

First In Line with Brit Morin

We can't talk about podcasts without mentioning Brit + Co founder Brit Morin's First In Linepodcast! She debuted season one in 2022 with trend-setting topics to help listeners get ahead of the next big opportunity across industries. High Low with EmRata

After listening to Emily Ratajkowski's best-selling memoir, My Body, earlier this year, I was taken with her distinct and empowered point of view on all things bodily autonomy and body image. This led me to discover her podcast which marries everything high and low-brow to raise big questions about life. Expect topics like pop culture, politics, feminism, TikTok, relationships and more to come up with special guests, authors, close friends, and celebs.

Second Life

Who What Wear co-founder Hillary Kerr debuted this interview-style podcast back in 2018 to tell the stories of women who have navigated epic career changes. Hear from the founders of some of your favorite brands and inspiring women across industries like fashion designer Aurora James, hair mogul Jen Atkin, actress Lily Collins, and beyond.

Crime Junkie

Ashley Flowers hosts this super popular true podcast, which covers a wide array of cases, murders, and unsolved mysteries. While some have a tolerance for these types of stories all day, everyday, take extra care in not tuning in before bedtime if you're particularly susceptible to nightmares.

Dead Eyes

I've heard a lot of buzz about this podcast on Spotify so it was high-time I tune in. Dead Eyes tells the story of comedian and actor Connor Ratliff who missed his shot at glory on the hit show Band Of Brothers because Tom Hanks fired him, presumably because he had "dead eyes." While the '90s offered so many wonderful things, and I really do mean so many (y'all remember those iconic '90s toys?!), the decade also offered some major film flops. Considering I was born in ‘98, it may seem like I don’t have a leg to stand on here, but trust me on this one.

Here are the 10 worst 90s movies that, simply, should not have been made.

1. The Waterboy (1998)

Touchstone Pictures

I have so much, yet simultaneously nothing, to say about Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy. Sandler unwittingly (as far as I know) mocks a stutter and it seems as though they wanted that to be the film’s funny bone, and when that didn’t succeed, there wasn’t much else holding this movie up. That’s probably why it has a 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

2. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Warner Bros. Pictures

Jim Carrey notoriously has a few poorly-rated films under his belt, but Ace Ventura: Pet Detective may take the cake. One of the reasons fans love Carrey is certainly for his range of facial expressions, but it has a time and place, and this film needed more than some quirky facial expressions to save it. The dialogue simply couldn’t be saved by a big Carrey grin, and for that reason, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is one of the worst films to come out of the 90s. And the movie’s 47 percent RT score isn’t doing it any favors.

3. Major Payne (1995)

Universal Pictures

Probably one of the most infamously bad movies of the decade, Major Payne (which has a 29 percent Rotten Tomatoes score) released in 1995 and we’ve never looked back… literally. I don’t know much about comedy, but I do know that delivery is everything, and Damon Wayans did not deliver.

4. Batman Forever (1995)

Warner Bros. Pictures

If there’s one thing the 2000s got right, it's the Batman franchise and universe. Unfortunately, the 90s missed the mark. Batman Forever leaned too heavily on over-the-top humor and campiness that it lacked any ounce of character development – something that is very needed in Batman movies, to say the least — which explains its 41 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

5. Wild Wild West (1999)

Warner Bros. Pictures

A diminished homage to the 1965 Wild Wild West show, the 1999 version failed to live up to the original’s tongue-in-cheek dialogue, developed characters, and the western of it all. Its campy tone didn’t win over new audiences and betrayed fans of the original series. All in all, Wild Wild West was a huge misfire, and only earned a 16 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

6. Hook (1991)

TriStar Pictures

I remember being so excited to watch this when I was a young lass, only to have my young self be very disappointed. Hook played far too much on creating a sentimental and nostalgic film that it neglected a plot line. It relied too heavily on honing in on references to the original tale that resulted in a messy plot that was, at the end of the day, confusing. Hook was sadly anything but magical, as is its 29 percent RT score.

7. RoboCop 3 (1993)

Orion Pictures International

RoboCop 3 completely deviated from what fans loved best in its original iteration. As most third installments do, RoboCop 3 was as much of a failure as it was a cash grab. It could’ve had something to do with swapping out and replacing the main actor for the protagonist, RoboCop, but what do I know? (The 9 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. That’s what I know.)

8. Mr. Wrong (1996)

Touchstone Pictures

Bill Pullman’s character isn’t the only thing wrong in Mr. Wrong, which has a 7 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. While rom coms usually, and obviously, consist of romance and comedy, this film’s plot points appeared manufactured and entirely unrealistic. It’s historically bad, so much so that Ellen DeGeneres (who stars in the movie) has joked about it being a “horrible flop that should have a sequel.” I get the joke, Ellen, I really do, but let’s hope there’s not a shred of seriousness in there.

9. Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)

20th Century

You’d think Speed 2: Cruise Control would set an example as to why sequels of great, standalone films should not be made, but alas we’re going to be plagued by them for years to come. This second installment lacked everything the first had to offer; the high-octane intensity, the action, the non-stop suspense, none of it was there in the sequel, leading to a film that lacked a real premise and any substance — and that got a 4 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

10. Barb Wire (1996)

Gramercy/Universal Pictures

I really didn’t want to put this one on the list because I love Pamela Anderson, but it’s only fair, and I cannot be biased. Barb Wire was, and remains, a hot mess with only a 28 percent RT score. There was no real trajectory of any aspects in this film, but particularly the aimless script. Thankfully, Anderson is having a redemption arc with her newest and upcoming film, The Last Showgirl and I’m loving it.

Buying my first home was a crash course in the unexpected. There’s so much you don’t know until you’re in the thick of it — piles of (actually important) paperwork, surprise maintenance and repairs, hidden costs that can throw off your budget, and navigating regulations you didn’t even realize existed. And through it all, there’s the excitement of finally owning a space you can truly call your own. As a home writer and enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to redesign my space in my cozy Scandi-style aesthetic, but I also had to budget for a new water heater, a new roof eventually, and other non-cosmetic but critical upgrades.

To help you on your journey, here are 13 essential tips every first-time homeowner should know.

Karolina Grabowska/Pexels

Prepare for Hidden Costs

Beyond your mortgage, you'll need to pay property taxes, which can run in the multiple thousands each year, home owner's insurance, and maintenance for things like your HVAC (heating and cooling system), water heater (which can last up to 15 years vs. 8-10 with regular maintenance), and roof. You'll also have to pay for utilities, like water and gas, that you didn't have to as a renter. Make sure to set aside 1 to 3 percent of your home’s purchase price annually for unexpected repairs like plumbing issues or roof leaks. You also have to pay for your trash pickup and recycling. Create a budget to avoid surprises and save for a rainy day – that hopefully doesn't lead to a leaky roof.;)

Understand Your Home Insurance Policy

It's important to know what your homeowner's insurance covers, especially if you live in an earthquake and wildfire-prone area like me. Consider additional coverage for floods or earthquakes or other location-specific concerns.

Create A Maintenance Schedule

Learn the basics of your home’s plumbing, electrical system, and HVAC, like where they are! Locate the main water shut-off valve and circuit breaker box, and create a maintenance schedule for tasks like changing HVAC filters (every three months recommended), cleaning gutters (every spring and fall), and servicing your appliances, plus when the warranties run out.

Have Recommended Contractors On Hand

There's nothing worse than having a plumbing problem and not actually having a plumber on call to fix it. NextDoor is a great resource for finding recommended electricians, plumbers, and other contractors to fix things that you can't. My neighbors knew exactly who to recommend and it was easy to connect with the right people (and avoid the wrong ones).

Get To Know Your Neighbors

Before buying, walk around the neighborhood to get the vibe. I wish I had chosen a neighborhood with more kids on the block. On the flip side, we are in a very quiet neighborhood! Post-sale, building relationships with your neighbors can help you create a sense of community – and it feels good to know you have extra eyes on your home when you're away. My neighbors have my phone number and we text each other when we're heading out of town and need packages taken inside. We also share goodies from our gardens, have an annual block party, and have friendly chats on the way to our mailboxes. Welcome to 'burb life!

Take Renovations Slowly

It's easy to get so excited about renovating and decorating your new home, but I highly recommend taking your time with renovations. I bought a major fixer upper and rushed getting it all done so that it was livable, but now I wish I had been more thoughtful about certain choices, and bargain-shopped a little more. Some things definitely could have waited. Live in your home for a while, get to know it better, before making major changes. Your budget will thank you!

Invest In Good Repair Tools

This is a good time to invest in a quality toolkit (hammer, screwdriver set, drill, and tape measure...) and hand drill because there will be many times in your role as a homeowner that you'll need all of the above and you'll be grateful you have them on hand.

Check Your Safety Features

Make sure to install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and note on your calendar to change the batteries every 6-12 months. If you decide it's right for you, you'll want to install a home security system too.

Keep a File for Important Documents

There is so much paperwork your first year of homeownership. Store warranty information, receipts, and maintenance records in an easily accessible place. If you're renovating, there are also permits you'll need to keep on file. And of course, you'll want your title, deed and mortgage docs in a secure place that you'll remember!

Know Local Regulations

Speaking of permits, before I had the windows replaced in my home, I checked with the county office online to make sure I didn't need a permit to do so. Turns out, the county had different rules than the city (I had moved from the county limits to the city limits), which did require a permit. I will spare you the story of an inspector coming by just as we were installing the last window! This is all to say, make sure to check local ordinances or your HOA (Homeowner Association) rules that might impact any changes, like fencing, landscaping and upgrades, you decide to make to your property.

Improve Your Energy Efficiency Early

Upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, windows, even solar if it makes sense for your home, can help reduce your utility bills and overtime pay for themselves.

Plan for Landscaping

Yard maintenance requires you to invest in tools or services for mowing, planting, and upkeep. If you consider the cost of your time, it's often cheaper to hire someone to do regular yard maintenance. Also, as you upgrade your landscaping, consider choosing low-maintenance plants and trees. After adding just a small bit of lawn and irrigation to maintain it, my water bill was a bit of a shocker!

Take Advantage of Tax Deductions

Either find a tax expert who can help you with your taxes, or research deductions or credits available to homeowners, such as mortgage interest or energy-efficiency upgrades. It's money you can use to cross things off your inevitable wish list!

Chef Genevieve LaMonaca

Foolproof Beef Wellingtonby Chef Genevieve LaMonaca

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef Tenderloin center cut canon (ask your butcher)
  • 1-2 T Avocado Oil for searing
  • 8oz shallots, minced
  • 1 lb Mushrooms, cremini or button, minced
  • 6 T butter
  • 1 t thyme leaves
  • 1 T minced Parsley
  • Salt and Pepper TT
  • Pastry Dough x 2:
  • Bread Flour 1 1/2 cups plus 1 T
  • Butter 3/4 cup (6oz) cubed
  • Salt 1/2 t
  • Ice cold water 1/4 cup

Directions:

  • Slice off a 2 lb center cut canon from a beef tenderloin or ask your butcher.
  • Pat dry, season heavily with salt and pepper. sear on all sides using a fat with a high smoke point (Avocado oil)
  • Tip: Precooking your beef is the secret to preventing a soggy bottom crust and most of the moisture is removed prior. This will also ensure that your tenderloin is cooked perfect every time.
  • Roast in a 150 oven to an internal temp of 115. Chill
  • TIP: I like to measure my canon lengthwise side to side then the circumference by using butchers twine. This will help me determine the size I need to make my prosciutto bed and pastry sheet.
  • Make your mushroom duxelles. Saute half a pound of minced shallots in 6 T butter then add 1 lb finely chopped mushrooms and thyme, saute, deglaze with sherry wine as necessary, cook until pan is dry, add minced parsley, season and set aside.
  • Add flour and butter to a counter top mixer and using a paddle, combine on lowest speed until the butter is turned into crumbs and all the flour is Incorporated. Pour in your ice water and mix until combined. Place dough onto the counter and form into a ball then flatten/ wrap with plastic wrap and chill.
