Should You Go Commando at the Gym?

In a world filled with adorable athletic gear, gym-friendly underwear gets surprisingly little attention. There are thousands of reviews on Amazon pointing you toward the best sports bras — but how do you pick the right knickers for your morning spin class or lunchtime Pilates sesh? And, heck, do you even need ’em? Surely there’s enough judgment at the gym without adding visible panty lines to the mix.

As it turns out, doctors have their own criteria for determining the best underwear for your workout — and you might want to listen up. We checked in with the experts to learn how your exercise habits can affect your health *down there.*

Exercise and vaginal health

Dr. Angela Jones, an OBGYN and Astroglide’s resident sexual health advisor, points out that the sweat and heat generated by your workout can set you up for a slew of unpleasant symptoms. “The key thing to keep in mind regarding vaginitis [inflammation of the vagina, including bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis] is that warm plus moist is a direct setup for vaginitis,” she says. “This is what all women try to avoid.”

That’s because yeast and bacteria thrive in a warm, moist environment, explains Dr. Alyssa Dweck, a New York-based OBGYN who works with urinary, bladder and vaginal health brand AZO. (We apologize for repeating everyone’s least favorite m-word — it won’t happen again.)

Both docs advise getting out of your exercise gear ASAP after a workout. (This rule also applies to swimsuits, so remember to bring a spare if you’re hanging at the beach this summer.)

Picking the right pair

Dr. Dweck and Dr. Jones both suggest picking breathable, lightweight underwear for the gym. “Choose underwear with a cotton crotch,” says Dr. Dweck. “Cotton is absorbent and allows the area to breathe.” Less absorbent materials like nylon, lycra, silk, and lace are best avoided, according to Dr. Jones.

But if breathability is the goal, why not just go commando? “Less is not always more,” says Dr. Jones. “If nothing else, wearing underwear may serve as an extra barrier between your vulva and whatever equipment you happen to be working with.” There’s an exception to this rule, however: “Workout clothes have completely evolved,” Dr. Jones acknowledges. “You may not even have to wear panties, as a lot of them either have built-in wicking material in the crotch or are made of materials that are highly absorbent.”

One final note: if nothing else, definitely skip the Valentine’s Day lingerie. “Thongs are not only uncomfortable, but can be irritating during a workout,” says Dr. Jones. “And [they] may serve as a conduit of spreading bacteria from your ‘hind parts’ to your vagina.” That’s a hard pass from us.

What could go wrong?

1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Women’s health expert Dr. Roshini Raj works with Keep Her Awesome, a resource for understanding BV and other vaginal infections. Raj points out that BV, which develops when you have an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, is the most common gynecologic infection among patients of childbearing age (14–49, give or take). In the US alone, 21 million people with vaginas are afflicted annually; one in three will have at least one occurrence of BV. Since it’s not an STI, you can get it even if you’re not getting it on. It can, however, be passed to partners with vaginas.

To limit your risk of developing BV, Raj also votes for cotton undies during exercise. “Cotton is a comfortable, breathable material that will help limit excess moisture and avoid trapping heat during exercise – both of which create the perfect environment for bacterial growth.” And you’ll want to slip into a fresh pair before you leave the gym.

“BV is not a matter of poor hygiene,” says Dr. Raj. “But it’s important to keep in mind best hygiene practices, especially after exercise, to help avoid a vaginal infection.” That means showering right away — or at least changing out of that sweaty workout gear.

When you do hit the showers, remember that your fave Bath & Body Works products don’t belong *everywhere*: Dr. Raj advises that scented soaps, like douching, can change the pH level of your vagina. “Plain water usually suffices to clean your vulva,” she says, “But if you want to use a soap, make sure it is gentle and unscented.”

2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): “There are no good data points to show that clothing can cause a UTI,” says Dr. Dana Rice, a urologist and creator of the UTI Tracker app. “There is not a specific fabric type that is better or worse.” But Rice points out that those sweaty leggings can be a source of bacteria when they’re damp, or if they haven’t been washed properly. “For my patients, I encourage clean undergarments and regular washing of all tight-fitting pants.”

And there’s another important step you should take at the gym to prevent UTIs: “Hydration, both during and after working out, is key to preventing bladder irritation,” says Dr. Rice. She explains that dehydration can alter the pH of your urine and irritate the lining of your bladder. “Many people have cystitis-like symptoms if they are dehydrated,” she says.

If you’re worried about your bladder keeping you up all night, Dr. Rice has a pro tip: “I encourage patients to drink enough water in the morning to keep their urine light yellow or better by lunchtime.” By the time the afternoon rolls around, you can sip a La Croix as needed, or snack on your fave hydrating foods.

Speaking of bladder issues…

Attention, new moms: We see you. There are a lot of complicated feels around exercise post-baby. You might be keen to hit the gym to boost your postpartum mental health or just to get a moment to yourself. Or maybe separation anxiety is too real and you’re hunting for baby-friendly mama workouts you can do from home.

Or — real talk — maybe there’s a little voice in your head wondering if underwear is *enough* to get you through that gym sesh. According to a representative from Poise, one in four women surveyed was hesitant to participate in workout classes, from yoga to Zumba, because of bladder leaks.

Their solution? Wear whatever underwear you like — along with a bladder support device, which you insert like a tampon. Also called an “internal vaginal device,” products like Poise’s Impressa basically help keep your urethra closed when there’s extra pressure on your bladder, like when you’re exercising.

Do you have a fave pair of gym-friendly undies? Tell us where to get ’em @BritandCo!

HSA isn’t just for prescriptions and doctor’s visits – there’s actually a ton of things you can buy with your savings. Blue light glasses and sunscreen are commonly HSA eligible, but a lot of people don’t know you can also finesse fancy spa visits and life-changing massage guns (I’m looking at you, Theragun) with their HSA dollars. Some of these items are also FSA eligible, so if you’ve got some funds to use before they expire at the end of the year, you’ve come to the right place!

Your HSA funds can do way more than you think. Check out these 14 unexpectedly fun health-related finds to help you step up your self-care!

What is HSA?

Polina Tankilevitch / PEXELS

HSA stands for Health Savings Account, a type of savings account that lets you set aside funds to pay for qualified medical expenses. HSAs are often available as a part of health insurance plans, though banks and credit unions offer them, too.

What can I buy with an HSA?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

You can buy a lot more with your HSA funds than you think: menstrual products, over-the-counter medicines, sunscreen, and travel to and from medical appointments are just some of the things you can buy with an HSA.

Is HSA worth it?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

Whether an HSA is worth it is really dependent on your needs. There are some nice advantages associated with it, though. You may be able to lower your out of pocket costs for medical needs. Plus, the funds are not taxed, so you may be able to save more. Unlike an FSA (Flexible Spending Account), HSA funds roll over year-over-year, so you don't have to worry about it expiring.

Should I max my HSA?

Pixabay / PEXELS

Maxing out your HSA to your account's annual maximum amount via monthly contributions can be beneficial if your goals are to save money and limit out of pocket costs for medical care. You can also opt to invest some of your HSA funds, which can be a smart decision for saving for things like family planning or retirement.

Since moving from downtown Atlanta, I've been sad about not having a convenient commute to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's anymore. To circumvent my lack of access to them, I've been making frequent trips to Publix. It's been one of my go-to grocery stores lately because it has some of the freshest produce and incredible deli selections I've tasted.

Whether my fiancé and I are looking for inexpensive parmesan cheese or pasta salad that doesn't skimp on quality, Publix truly has everything we need! But, I've recently discovered the most amazing appetizer that cost me less than $15 — and I can't wait to share it with everyone who may not have the patience (or know how) to make a delicious charcuterie board yet. With just two ingredients, you can make an easy holiday appetizer that's totally giving bougie! Here's how!

Here's the inexpensive, luxe appetizer from Publix that'll fill your fancy snack needs!

Jasmine Williams

1. Firehook Baked Crackers

My childhood was filled with eating saltine crackers with soup whether I had a viral cold or upset stomach, but I've been looking for something that feels elevated. The problem is that I can be picky about the taste and texture of what I eat. But surprisingly these Firehook Baked Crackers have passed both tests!

They're super crisp and don't have an overwhelming sea salt taste, which makes my taste buds happy. They're also sturdy unlike some flimsy snacks I've tried. This is important because I knew I wanted to pair them with a tasty dip or spread. I just didn't know which until I took a chance on a new brand.

P.S. It does contain wheat, so steer clear if you're allergic to it!

Jasmine Williams

2. Alouette Garlic & Herbs, Soft Spreadable

This soft spreadable has all the makings of what I imagine bliss to taste like. I know you're thinking, "But it's garlic & herbs," — but this is what my uninterrupted staycation desires consist of! It's flavorful, yet somehow manages to remain lightweight...which is honestly rare with spreads. However, this gluten-free option will make you see stars.

A Tasty Two-Ingredient Luxe Appetizer

Jasmine Williams

Okay, don't judge me...I had to dig in before I snapped a pic. Sorry, but my camera doesn't eat first!

In short, I stand by this quick and inexpensive luxe appetizer from Publix. It's helping me to remember to eat when I'm in the thick of working and caring for a busy toddler. It doesn't require a ton of prep time either. In less than two minutes you'll be tasting a delicious blend of sea salt, garlic, and herbs!

If you're hosting this holiday season, you can delicately arrange this duo on a tray, with the garlic spread dolloped in the middle and the crackers beautifully fanning out around it. However, this is my preferred method of eating it: getting the crackers and dip on my plate as quickly as possible so I can eat it even faster.

Happy snacking!

Olivia Munn bared it all in her latest SKIMS ad, proving you don't have to hide your scars. The actress posed in a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, supporting Susan G. Komen®and highlighting her own journey with the disease. She looked absolutely stunning in every photo, but the most gorgeous moment was the way Munn didn't shy away from showing her mastectomy scars. She spoke to TODAY about her experience during the shoot, and why she ultimately decided to ditch her insecurities. Here's what she had to say!

SKIMS

Munn shared with TODAYthat she didn't initially plan to show her scars on the set. The campaign was focused on her recovery post-breast cancer diagnosis, but the makeup artist had a hard time covering up the scars throughout the shoot. She explained that she took a look in the mirror and thought, "I’m done being insecure about my scars." From there, she took the idea to show them off to the SKIMS team — and the rest is history.

SKIMS

And while she was scared to be so vulnerable on camera, this was ultimately a really empowering move for Munn. She elaborated that there are "so many women that have these same scars" who feel just as insecure as she did about them — and she really hopes those women see this ad. "Skims is so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal, and cancer really doesn't have that same connotation," she said. "So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it."

SKIMS

The star also took to Instagram to give a behind-the-scenes explanation of her experience. She reiterated that she was "done being insecure" about her scars. "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought," she wrote. "I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I’m sending."

She also shared that SKIMS will donate 10% of their bra sales (except bralettes) to Susan G. Komen® — a charity dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer — from October 23-31 in stores and online. "It’s really meaningful to be part of an initiative that supports research and helps countless individuals impacted by breast cancer," she said.

SKIMS

All of this comes on the heels of Munn's announcement earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the diagnosis came after recently tested negatively for well-known breast cancer genes and had normal results from her annual mammogram — but her doctor to check her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. The test showed Munn had a 37% risk of breast cancer, so she pushed for more answers that eventually lead to her diagnosis.

Since then, Munn shared with PEOPLE that she had 4 surgeries in 10 months and underwent medically-induced menopause — all the while juggling being a new mom with husband John Mulaney. She shared, "I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

SKIMS

After that March announcement, it's clear Munn is dedicated to raising awareness for women's health — and particularly their options. While chatting about the SKIMS campaign, Munn told TODAY, "You've got to go your doctor and you inundate them with information and you don't stop until they give you the test you need."

If you want to test your own risk for breast cancer, the National Institute of Health has resources here.

The Family Stoneis all over TikTok right now, with people dissecting left and right whether the 2000's Christmas movie actually good or actually bad. Until now, I actually hadn't seen this Sarah Jessica Parker and Rachel McAdams throwback film — and TBH, I was desperate to weigh in on the discourse, especially after watching the weirdness that was Love Actually (sorry not sorry!). But with the likes of Diane Keaton, Luke Wilson, and Claire Danes in this cast, it has to be pretty good...right? After streaming this 2005 film on Disney+, here's what I thought.

Here's everything I thought after watching The Family Stone for the first time!

20th Century Fox

1. Why won't Meredith sleep in her boyfriend's bed at his parents house?

While I could understand if Everett's parents didn't want them staying in the same room (sort of), I genuinely am so confused why Meredith makes that call on her own. Is she worried about being respectful? About seeming respectful? Do they genuinely not sleep together? A very confusing choice all-around.

2. Yeah, I mean Meredith is a little awkward for sure — but like WHY is she so uptight?

Anyone would get nervous to meet their potential future in-laws, but Meredith is definitely taking this to a different level. It feels like she's totally shut down, or something. I mean, I guess she had a bad experience with Amy back in the city, so maybe she's worried the holidays will end up the same? Regardless, I'm super uncomfy watching just about every exchange.

3. Why do they all act weird when she wants her privacy on the phone?

Okay, even though Meredith is acting a little weird, I don't think it's that weird that she would wanna take a phone call alone. They act like she just told them to buzz off when she asked for space to answer the phone.

20th Century Fox

4. I love how close this family is, but they're incredibly judgmental!

Listen, I'm all here for a quirky, close family dynamic. I have a kooky family of my own where my siblings and I all speak the same feral language! But these folks seem to take their closeness and use it to alienate and shut out others. It explains why Meredith is having such a hard time connecting!

5. Everyone was very nonchalant about Elizabeth breaking Meredith's nice shoes — I would be pissed!

I don't care if they were Louboutins or the latest Target special — if a child (and particularly one I'd never even met before) recklessly broke my shoes without a care in the world, I would be very upset. It's honestly off-putting that nobody in the family seemed to react to Elizabeth's inconsiderate behavior, and instead chose to look at Meredith like SHE was weird for being peeved.

6. It's honestly so weird how everyone keeps making light that they’re all talking about her?!

Ben literally told Meredith that they're all talking about her behind her back...who does that?! It would be one thing if there were lighthearted jokes and jests leading up to that, but the vibes are clearly bad already. Why make it worse?

20th Century Fox

7. IMO, Meredith's not “shouting” to be rude — she’s trying to be inclusive of Thad because he's hard-of-hearing!

The whole family keeps acting like Meredith is a jerk for speaking up and emphasizing things to Thad, but honestly I think she's just trying to keep him included in the conversation in the way she knows how. Maybe instead of silently judging and letting her look foolish, Everett (or literally anyone else around) could gently explain how to best communicate with his brother?

8. Meredith may be awkward, but she lights up when she talks about her life with Everett!

Amy said that Meredith never stops talking, but it seems like she loves to gab when she's talking about the person she loves: Everett. What's wrong with sharing that with people? So what if she's a little robotic — it's the liveliest she's been the whole time!

9. “I can see you beginning to look at me like they do” :(

Aw, this made me so sad for Meredith!

10. Ben is being so creepy, TBH...

"I had a dream about you," um...okay?! Why are you so clearly trying to mack on your brother's girl?!

20th Century Fox

11. Sybil may be “nice” but she’s incredibly overbearing — look at how she treats Amy about Brad!

In one of the greatest musicals of all time (Into The Woods), Little Red sings that "nice is different than good" — and that couldn't be more true here. Sybil seems nice and friendly, but really she's pretty overbearing and judgmental towards all her kids. I mean, truly who brings up that who daughter lost her virginity to in front of a total stranger unsolicited like that? She was clearly trying to manipulate Amy into fitting the mold she made for her.

12. There are clearly a LOT of strings attached with Sybil

Seriously though, this woman is a tough nut to crack. I mean, she rushed to conclusions about Meredith, making it very clear she's not "the one" for Everett to him and everyone else. It seems like she would be incredibly tough to please in any circumstance, let alone the one where you're picking your life partner (and requesting the family diamond).

13. Meredith keeps trying to be thoughtful, even though this family is awful to her.

Offering to make Christmas breakfast for everyone, even though this family continued to haze her to the point where she didn't even feel comfortable sleeping under their roof, was honestly really kind and thoughtful of Meredith. I don't know if I'd have that kind of grace and resilience in a similar scenario.

20th Century Fox

14. This race and sexuality conversation is SO CRINGE I AM CRYING WHY WHY WHY!

Oh my god, please make this end. I know I've been pretty apologetic for Meredith this whole time, but woof. This was uncomfortable and awkward and problematic. She definitely has a LOT to learn — even for 2005.

15. “I love the gays! Gay people!” Okay, me...

Honestly, tattoo this quote on my forehead.

16. Everett is being such a weirdo about the ring and Julie and everything — like what a WEIRDO!

I know he had a nice little evening wandering around with his girlfriend's sister, but it really seems like this man is ready to blow up his whole life so quickly. Like, Julie was so clearly uncomfortable by him asking her to wear Meredith's engagement ring, but he literally forced her to anyway! WHO does that?

20th Century Fox

17. Julie is honestly sus too...

I get that feels can come outta nowhere, but Julie was very clearly into Everett like...the whole time. There wasn't really any hiding that.

18. Meredith is an incredible gift giver — WOW!

Honestly, if someone gave me that photo of my dying mother, I would be beside myself. That is a gorgeous gift, and I hope to be half the gift-giver she is.

19. Meredith could really stand to tone down the "Karen" behavior

This family put her through a lot, but I am really starting to be over her victim mentality. You put your foot in your mouth multiple times, girly. Apologize and move on!

20th Century Fox

20. "Isn’t there anybody that loves me?!” is incredibly hilarious.

The way Meredith says this so earnestly is just too good.

21. Rachel McAdams slipping in the eggs is incredible

I can only imagine how many takes it took to get this scene! I would have been cracking up the entire time. 10/10 physical comedy across the board!

22. Is Brad the only normal guy (and person) in this story???

Okay, I know we're supposed to think he's some boring doofus or whatever, but Brad honestly seems really nice. He very earnestly shows up for Christmas morning (you know, the major freakin' holiday) to impress Amy, bringing a gift and being there throughout all the madness. Even when things get crazier and crazier, Brad doesn't bat an eye. A keeper, for sure.

20th Century Fox

23. TBH only this weirdo family could deal with the girlfriend swapping

Can you imagine? Like can you ACTUALLY imagine? I couldn't! These people are so strange.

24. Poor normal Brad being sucked into all this...

It seems like Brad is fully "in it" by the end. Best of luck to Brad!

25. Okay, so yes I did still cry!

As the weepy softy that I am...of course I cried. It's beautiful that these weirdos still celebrate and love each other after everything — including the passing of their mother. I mean, come on! Can you blame me?!
