6 Alternatives to Internships for a Productive College Summer

The pressure to land that dream internship can be intense, especially when you’re in college. Obtaining some professional experience is an excellent way to squeeze the most out of your summer, but it’s definitely not the only option. Perhaps you have bucket list items you want to cross off, classes you need to take, or simply passions you want to pursue. If so, keep scrolling for our list of non-internship ways to spend your summer.

1. Be a camp counselor. If you grew up going to camp, you know that there’s nothing more synonymous with summer than sitting around a bonfire, playing capture the flag, and swimming in a lake. Camp was like heaven during your childhood, so why not return as an adult? Even if you’ve never gone to sleep-away camp before, becoming a camp counselor will increase your ability to work on a team, be independent, and contribute to a community.

2. Volunteer. Maybe you really want to give back between semesters. If you regularly volunteer, you know that devoting your time and energy to a worthy cause nurtures the soul — so imagine the difference you could make if you spent a whole summer on a volunteer project. Not sure where to start? The government actually has a website that will lead you to programs in need in your area.

3. Travel. A few free months during the most beautiful season is the perfect time to tackle that bucket list. Whether you’ve always dreamt of going abroad or envision yourself on a road trip stateside, consider summer an opportunity to catch the travel bug. And it doesn’t have to be pricey. You can keep your travel on a serious budget by booking more affordable lodging that isn’t a hotel, or even try couchsurfing. There are also many services that cater to travelers looking to experience world travel at prices that won’t break the bank. STA Travel, for example, offers various affordable tours, adventure packages, and even round-the-world trips. They also provide discounts on hotels and transportation, including special flight deals for travelers under 31.

4. Take classes part-time in your college town. If you have a particularly heavy class schedule during the school year or want to get that one pesky credit out of the way, think about enrolling in summer school. When you were growing up, summer school was probably considered punishment, but in college, it can be a terrific way to meet new people and enjoy your college town without the pressures of the school year.

5. Tutor or coach. Plenty of academic programs and summer sports leagues need tutors and coaches. If you grew up playing a sport in high school or at the club level, check back with those organizations to see if they need extra help during the summer. And websites such as TutorMe allow you to tutor practically any subject via video chat if you’re qualified — plus you get paid! Sharing your expertise with kids will be invaluable to both you and them as well as incredibly rewarding.

6. Start a business. The idea of starting a business or exploring a side hustle might seem daunting during the school year, but summer offers an extended period of time to really make some headway toward your entrepreneurial dreams. For those who are crafty, creative marketplaces such as Etsy provide a platform for monetizing your talents. It's out with the old, in with the new at Walt Disney World this year! After expanding EPCOT to include Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, as well as adding Tiana's Bayou Adventure to the Magic Kingdom, the next park to get a refresh is Animal Kingdom.

The last time Disney's Animal Kingdom got an exciting refresh was with the addition of Pandora, AKA the world of Avatar, in 2017. So, let's find out what's leaving — and what's coming next — at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom in 2025!

Scroll to find out which Walt Disney World attraction is closing in March 2025!

Walt Disney World

"It's Tough to Be a Bug!" will officially close "permanently" on March 17, 2025, according to Walt Disney World. The iconic attraction is leaving after nearly three decades and is set to be replaced by a new 3D show, "Zootopia: Better Zoogether!" in the winter.

Situated in the Tree of Life Theater, located in Animal Kingdom, "It's Tough to Be a Bug!" first opened on April 22, 1998. Inspired by A Bug's Life, the animated Pixar film, this attraction is a 4D experience that has received mixed reviews.

One TripAdvisor review says, "Not really worth the wait for how short the show is. A little scary, but some cute effects with the steam and water. A couple kids were crying." However, another review called the attraction "brilliant" with "totally unexpected laughs."

Parkgoers wear bug-eye glasses and watch as Flik navigates bug life in 4D. You'll sense creepy crawlies on the ground, you'll smell a stink bug, and watch as the bugs prove how tough it is to be — you guessed it — a bug!

Blake Lively's amended complaint is "underwhelming," according to Justin Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman. On February 18, the Gossip Girl actress filed her amended complaint, which claims two other actresses on the It Ends With Us set were “one million percent made uncomfortable” by Justin Baldoni — and that they could be willing to testify. But according to Bryan, the complaint has a "lack of actual evidence" for their 2026 trial.

Here's why Justin Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman says Blake Lively's amended complaint is "unsubstantial."

Blake Lively's complaint is full of "unsubstantial hearsay," according to Justin Baldoni's lawyer.

On February 19, Bryan Freedman explained why he finds Blake Lively's amended complaint and its "unsubstantial hearsay" (AKA the claim made outside of court) "underwhelming."

"Her underwhelming amended complaint is filled with unsubstantial hearsay of unnamed persons who are clearly no longer willing to come forward or publicly support her claims," he says in a statement to People, adding that Justin and his team "have been transparent in providing receipts, real time documents and video showing a completely different story than what has been manipulated and cherry picked to the media."

"Since documents do not lie and people do, the upcoming depositions of those who initially supported Ms. Lively’s false claims and those who are witnesses to her own behavior will be enlightening," he continues. "What is truly uncomfortable here is Ms. Lively’s lack of actual evidence."

Bryan Freedman's statement comes after Blake Lively's lawyers told The Hollywood Reporter her complaint "provides significant additional evidence and corroboration of her original claims."

"The complaint includes significant contemporaneous evidence that Ms. Lively was not alone in raising allegations of on-set misconduct more than a year before the film was edited," the statement continues, "as well as evidence detailing the threats, harassment, and intimidation of not just Ms. Lively, but numerous innocent bystanders that have followed defendants’ retaliatory campaign.”

Both of these unnamed persons "have given Ms. Lively permission to share their communications in the Amended Complaint as they are laid out, and they will testify and produce documents in the discovery process,” one of Blake's spokespersons told THR.

Now that the holiday chaos is long gone and the warmer months are right around the corner, countless people are currently planning their summer vacations. Yet, before you book any airfare or travel accommodations, you may want to consult Expedia's 2025 Air Hacks Report for the cheapest day to buy flights — you may be surprised to find out what day (and what time) it actually is!

Scroll to find out the cheapest day to buy a flight!

Uliana Novitskaia

The report's findings have shown that Sunday is actually the cheapest day to book flights, with travelers saving an average of 6% on domestic flights and as much as 17% on international flights compared to Mondays or Fridays.

Why exactly Sunday offers the most affordable airfare options could be due to two factors. First, recreational travel is typically booked on Fridays; meanwhile, travel for work is more popular on Mondays. These two days represent the most expensive days of the week to book a flight.

Sunday tends to be viewed as a day reserved for catching up on rest and gearing up for the week ahead. Perhaps that's why fewer people decide to fly on Sunday, and the lower demand leads to cheaper ticket prices.

However, it's important to note that the day of your actual flight departure also matters. Those flying domestically could save as much as 17% if they head out on a Saturday; meanwhile, international vacationers may save up to 15% if they leave on a Thursday.

And even though booking on a Sunday may be the most budget-friendly, departing on a Sunday is actually the most expensive.

Aside from what days to book and fly, Expedia's 2025 Air Hacks Report also debunked plenty of popular travel myths to help better inform passengers.

Sweet July

First, it's long been thought that summer is the most expensive season to travel, given the warmer weather. Contrary to popular belief, August is the cheapest month of the year to jet set. The chillier months of February and March turn out to be the most costly, possibly because people like to escape cold weather over mid-winter and spring break.

Grace Brown

Next, many people think that booking flights as far in advance as possible is the best way to save on airfare costs. This isn't always the case, with the "sweet spot" for ticket-buying differing depending on whether you plan to travel within the States or abroad.

For instance, domestic travelers can save 25% when they book their flights from one to three months in advance as opposed to people who wait until the last minute. International travelers, on the other hand, may save up to 17% if they wait to book until 18 to 29 days before their intended departure, compared to three months or more in advance.

Sydney Savage

Finally, if you hate encountering delays or cancellations, you may want to book a morning flight, as the report suggests these departures are much less likely to be canceled.

After 9:00 p.m., the risk of flight cancellation is 57% higher, with flights between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. experiencing the lowest cancellation rate. Time of year may impact cancellation chances, too, as the months of August and September have just 1.2% cancellation rates.

Thin Mints are undeniably the best Girl Scout cookie flavor, which is why I’m so pumped that Wendy's Thin Mints Frosty is finally here!

That’s right – Wendy’s gave their regular Frosty roster a tasty upgrade in lieu of Girl Scout cookie season. It’s ahh-mazing!

Read on for everything we know about the Wendy’s Thin Mints Frosty.

Wendy's

Starting February 21, you can order the Thin Mints Frosty from Wendy’s. The chain teamed up with Girl Scouts of the USA for the all-new flavor, which was initially announced on January 27. I've been counting down the days to the launch since!

Wendy's

The Thin Mints Frosty is concocted with a mint-chocolate swirl that uses actual Thin Mints cookies to create a “crumbly, cookie butter-esque texture.” As far as the Frosty base goes, you’ll be able to order it in either of Wendy’s classic Frosty flavors: vanilla or chocolate.

Girl Scouts of the USA

Though I haven't tried it yet, I anticipate that the Thin Mints Frosty will simply be a 10/10 treat – or perhaps even a solid 11 or 12/10! It’s widely known that the crispy chocolate cookies are always better straight from the freezer (at least in my family), so knowing they're going to be incorporated into a frozen treat is truly so exciting.

Wendy's + Girl Scouts of the USA

The Thin Mints Frosty is available nationwide – but only for a limited-time – starting Friday, February 21.

Girl Scouts of the USA

The 2025 Girl Scout cookie season began on January 7 with 12 flavors available for purchase. Girl Scouts of the USA did sadly announce two flavors, Girl Scout S’mores and Toast-Yay!, will not return for the 2026 cookie season.

I luckily don’t see Thin Mints going anywhere – they’re a cult favorite!

Lorelai Gilmore is one fictional character we know like the back of our hands. We've analyzed her relationship with Rory, why she's actually super similar to Logan, and why showing up to Chilton in cutoffs and boots was actually pretty unrealistic. But there's one detail about this beloved TV mom literally everyone talks about — and it's not actually that unrealistic. Y'all know what I'm referring to: Lorelai and Rory's constantly eating takeout.

Here's why it makes total sense that Lorelai and Rory Gilmore always eat out in Gilmore Girls.

Lorelai Gilmore probably never learned how to cook.

Warner Bros. Television

Lorelai and Rory's eating habits in Gilmore Girls have been a hot topic among fans for years. Whether it's because viewers are confused about how they afford so much takeout, or they're discussing how the mother-daughter duo stays so slim when all they consume is coffee, pizza, and burgers, for some reason, talking about the girls' food is just as popular as talking about which one of Rory's boyfriends is your favorite.

But one Reddit user points out that while they "always hated the cutesy quirky 'We can't cook. We can only survive on take out and diner food' thing," there's probably a really good chance that because Lorelai grew up in Emily and Richard's house (AKA, with a maid and a cook), "Lorelai never had to learn how to cook and could probably never cook for Rory."

"Dinner was cooked and served to Lorelai at home by a maid and when she left they lived in a shed and she had no way to cook, and then when they got their own house when she was almost 30 she had never cooked," they say. "She could've put some effort in and learned but the way Lorelai and Rory live is exactly how Emily lives just without the at home maid."

I've talked a lot about how trapped Lor felt in her life before moving to Stars Hollow, and how she probably wanted to rebel in every single area of her life. And if Emily never let her eat junk food, opting for Luke's and Al's Pancake World could be one way Lorelai proves to herself that she's truly independent.

And Stars Hollow is full of people who love her!

But it's also a way for the close-knit community of Stars Hollow to get even closer. Because if there's one thing a small town loves, it's a potluck! (Especially for a town that's constantly hosting community events. These people are literally always together). "I'm sure they ate at the Inn a lot too when Rory was younger," another Reddit user says of Lorelai's first few years in Stars Hollow. "Mia seems like the type to offer meals as a part of Lorelei's pay."

"Being best friends with Sookie would've definitely had its perks," a third offers. "She experiments a lot with her food, even outside her capacity as the inn's chef. We often see her bringing over food/leftovers."

And if Sookie's love language is cooking and she's close enough to Lorelai to know she can't cook but wants to provide for Rory, this is the perfect way for Sookie to show these gals some love. "When I was younger and started to experiment with recipes and making my own, my friends were my guinea pigs," another Reddit comment reads. "Very happy ones, too!"

I'd definitely let Sookie cook for me anytime.
