See Which Stars Nailed (and Failed) the Cannes Outfit Change

Besides debuting genre-bending movies and award-worthy performances, the Cannes Film Festival offers up nearly two weeks of epic style inspo. But it seems each year — for 68 years and counting — we seem to get a whole lot more out of the red carpet than just major princess moments. Whether it’s because of the extended, ‘round-the-clock schedule that has stars hopping from daytime photoshoot to evening premiere to off-the-charts after party or the fairy tale seaside locale that spurs on starlets to live out their French girl style dreams, we can also count on Cannes to produce some of the best sartorial scene stealers and OMG-worthy looks we’ll see all year. So to mark the end of the festival over this past Memorial Day weekend, we decided to pour through pics of our fave celebs’ wardrobes to see which of them nailed — and failed — the art of the Cannes outfit change. Scroll through to see which looks came out on top and which totally flopped.

1. Sienna Miller: A fashion girl through and through, Sienna nailed every single look she wore at Cannes, including those that were major style risks. From her over-the-top-in-all-the-right-ways Valentino Haute Couture kite dress from The Sea of Trees premiere (those primary colors, that diamond neckline!) to the vintage-feeling, custom-made tiered Gucci gown she wore to the Macbeth premiere that’s actually more on the pulse than you might think (after all, prairie girls are the new boho babes), the Cannes juror was in her element the more non-traditional her looks got. Both outfits get gold stars in our book. (Photos via Pascal Le Segretain/Getty)

2. Eva Longoria: Eva’s ultra glamorous rotation of gowns helped show that it doesn’t matter how luxe your dress is unless it fits your body type. There’s no denying that the silk halter dress by Gabriela Cadena she wore at the Champ’Seed party was stunning, not to mention totally on board with the ’70s revival trend, but it just didn’t have that same wow-factor of the silver mermaid-style gown she wore at the Inside Out premiere by the same designer. Why? The latter fits like a glove over her hourglass figure and helps to highlight flaunt those va-va-voom curves. (Photos via Alex B. Huckle, Pascal Le Segretain/Getty)

3. Emma Stone: By now we expect Emma Stone to turn heads in an elegant yet peppy ensemble like the lace and tulle Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress she wore at the Irrational Man photocall. That’s why we love her white Dior gown from the movie’s premiere more — because it wasn’t so safe. With out-of-the-box details like a ’90s-style neckline (+ crystal choaker to boot!) and a spider web-style lace overlay, Emma left us crossing our fingers that she keeps tapping her grungy side for red carpets to come. 4. Emily Blunt: There’s no doubt that Emily looked stunning in her studded Stella McCartney dress at the Sicario after party — and right on trend too: Eva Longoria, Naomi Watts and Karlie Kloss were also spotted in head-to-toe metallic frocks this year. But in her quirky tea-length Peter Pilotto patterned dress, Blunt looked cool, confident and in command. Throw in matching heeled sandals and a bold orange-red lip (plus an almost-matching hair color) and you’ve got the stuff that trendsetters are made of. (Photos via Tristan Fewings, Danny E. Martindale/Getty)

5. Rachel Weisz: Rachel Weisz epitomized elegance at this year’s Cannes, but in two completely polar opposite ways. First, in an ultra sleek Narciso Rodriguez jumpsuit at The Lobster photocall — the formal uniform of the modern #Girlboss — and next, in a bold silk teal Prada gown at the Youth premiere, which encapsulated Old Hollywood glam. (Photos via Ben A. Prunchie, Clemens Bilan/Getty)

6. Marion Cotillard: Well this is an interesting take on French girl stripes! Suited up in a lined Ulyana Sergeenko jumpsuit at the Macbeth photocall, Marion’s usual Parisian cool seems overwhelmed by her eclectic outfit of a rainbow-hued Ulyana Sergeenko onesie and undeniably fabulous metallic pink pumps (which would feel way more at home paired with a silver shift or next-level LBD). We’re way more enamored with her glitzy custom-made Dior mini dress at the Macbeth premiere that strikes a perfect balance between striking and chic. (Photos via Ian Gavan,Clemens BilanonCo/Getty)

7. Karlie Kloss: Karlie was the queen of awkward hemlines at Cannes, though if you ask us, one garment raised significantly more eyebrows than the other. Skorts are in, if you didn’t know, and just as much as cropped hemlines, but we took the fashion-forward bait of the not-quite-pants, not-really-a-dress Atelier Versace Couture jumpsuit she wore at the Opening Ceremony + La Tete Haute premiere over the shortened double-slit embellished Louis Vuitton gown from the Youth premiere. Any girl who’s ever tried to match her heel height with a maxi has to agree that the stiff, mid-foot length is an exceptionally tricky, and not particularly cute, look to pull off. (Photos via Andreas Rentz, Pascal Le Segretain/Getty)

8. Natalie Portman: When it comes down to it, would you rather have Natalie mimic the red carpet or dress like Black Swan IRL? The answer is obvious, even though her Dior Couture gown at the Opening Ceremony + La Tete Haute premiere was the twist on a classic we live for: her sheer Rodarte dress at the A Tale of Love And Darkness photocall showed that the actress can be dark and mysterious if she pleases. Protecting women's reproductive rights feels like an uphill battle. To date, 14 states have a total abortion ban in place that don't allow any exceptions for sexual violence against women or young girls. One of the states is Missouri, where model Karlie Kloss spent time as a child.

Having given birth to her first child during the pandemic, she feels fortunate to have a positive birth story, but she knows this isn't always the case for others. Unfortunately, doctors don't always prioritize women's pain and this can end up especially hurting Black moms. There's also things like postpartum depression to consider.

Luckily, there are moms — like Karlie Kloss — who are willing to push back against any stigma by sharing their postpartum stories and advocating for maternal health.

Karlie's Postpartum Experience + Maternal Health Inequality

There are birthing classes and books dedicated to educating moms about life during postpartum, but that doesn't always mean you can know exactly what to expect. In Karlie's case, she remembers the difficulties she faced after giving birth. She told Glamour, "My body was completely turned around, you’re not sleeping, and there’s this enormous learning curve that you have to figure out." For some moms, postpartum anxiety or postpartum depression can add to the challenges of adjusting to a new normal. The truth is that 1 in 10 women experience PPD, making it a common occurrence.

As tough as the postpartum experience can be, Karlie feels like it helped open her eyes to things she didn't have prior knowledge about. She said, "...the access to, say, the right kind of formula to feed your child, or protections and rights, is not equal."

Why Karlie's Advocating For Maternal Health Support + Paid Leave

When Karlie learned about the trigger ban on abortion in Missouri, she told Glamour she was upset and wanted to figure out how to become active in fighting for reproductive rights. She said, "We are living in a country where forced birth is a reality. And yet when that mother goes into labor and that child comes into the world, she also is not protected...before being forced to go back to work." She went on to express frustration about the lack of policies that can ensure birthing women are actually protected in a country that demands ownership of their reproductive rights.

It's one of the reasons she chose to join Bobbie's Motherboard and the #passpaidleave campaign. She said, "As I’ve gotten more informed on the history of it, learning how many times [paid leave] has been tried to pass and how close we got this past fall, now is the time to really bring this to the forefront." This inspired her to implement a 12-week paid leave policy at her own company, Kode With Klossy. Right on!

We still have a long way to go when it comes to women's health. We know it shouldn't be a hard decision for the government to determine women need more beneficial policies and less threats of criminal charges but, thankfully, there are people who are committed to using their platforms to advocate.

One thing about me: I have extremely pale skin — like I'm talking almost translucent. That means the second I get even less than 7 hours of sleep, you can see every blue vein and eye bag showing underneath my eyes. So one of my most important steps in my skincare routine is a good eye cream to brighten and liven my under-eyes. As a self-appointed expert in this area, I thought I'd share with you some of my most used eye creams to give you that "I just had 5 shots of espresso and got 10 hours of sleep" look!

Amazon

CeraVe Eye Cream

This CeraVe eye cream is one of the best bangs you can get for your buck in the beauty world. It's under $15, dermatologist-approved, and really does work. It's honestly a go-to of mine because it's so affordable and easy to stock up on. Not to mention how the gentle and mild formula works wonders on my sensitive skin! I love this one for brightening and depuffing on the daily!

Amazon

First Aid Beauty Brightening Eye Cream

What drew me to this eye cream — besides the fact that it was First Aid Beauty and I'm obsessed with them — was the Niacinimide in it. This is a hydrating ingredient that I'm always looking for in my skincare because of how nourishing it is. My skin truly drinks it up, so I knew it would work incredibly under my eyes. This cream has an almost iridescent glow to it that looks amazing when you first wake up and need a pick-me-up. It looks like a highlighter for your under-eyes!

Sephora

Summer Fridays Jet Lag Eye Mask

Hi, my name is Kayla and I have a serious addiction to Summer Fridays. I can't get enough, and I truly wish I could (or at least my bank account does). This eye mask is just as good as the face mask, and that's saying a lot. It's very nourishing, and super hydrating. This makes my under-eyes look awake, bright, and de-puffed as soon as I wake up!

Amazon

Kiehl's Avocado Eye Treatment

Kiehl's has a lot of great products — and you truly can't go wrong with any of them — but this eye cream specifically is amazing. It's made with avocado and caffeine, so you'll be looking like you got 10 hours of sleep in no time (even if you didn't). If you have dry skin like me, then you'll really love its hyper-hydrating formula.

Amazon

Farmacy Brightening Eye Treatment

Did you know honey is actually a great way to brighten up your under-eyes and help them look more awake? Well, this Farmacy eye cream is full of it, and caffeine, as well. It also features Vitamin C and Cranberry Peptides, which are great if you have older, or more mature skin. So tackle your wrinkles and your dark circles simultaneously — we love a multi-purpose product!

Amazon

Biossance Squalane Eye Cream

This eye cream is a bit on the pricier side, but it's a product where you start to see results almost immediately. It really is that good. You'll definitely start to notice immediate brightness, but this also increases overall brightness over time as well with frequent use. Definitely a fave I keep going back to!

Amazon

Mario Badescu Eye Cream

Another brand that's sensitive-skin approved! Mario Badescu has such great products for people that are sensitive to perfumes and certain ingredients. I love this eye cream, in particular, given the helpful caffeine in it! After using it for a while, I've noticed that the blueness and bags under my eyes aren't as visible, and that my undereyes are way more bright overall. I love to see those kind of results!

Lately, Vogue has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. In the March issue of the magazine — the same one that was said to be championing those who “democratize fashion” featuring models like Kendall Jenner, Ashley Graham, Adwoa Aboah and Liu Wen — there is a multi-page spread of Karlie Kloss styled as a geisha in yellowface.

The leaked images surfaced on the web yesterday and, needless to say, netizens are pretty angry. Their choice to outfit Karlie in geisha attire, Shimada hair and white makeup as she poses in Japan’s Ise-Shima National Park in an editorial titled “Spirited Away” (a nod to Japanese animator and director Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 film of the same name), is problematic, to say the least.

The spread was photographed in Japan by Mikael Jansson, who shared the above photo, and was styled by Phyllis Posnick. It features Karlie posing by a sumo wrestler, walking down the stairs of a tea house and even soaking in a bath, and obviously, the internet is upset. How did this happen? People took to Twitter to sound off. Read some of the noteworthy reactions below.

Karlie has since apologized, saying that she’s “truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive” and that she will work to “ensure” her future projects “empower and inspire women.”

Happy birthday Rory Gilmore! Like the true Gilmore Girls fall gal she is, Rory's birthday is in the best autumn month: October. The bookworm would turn 40 on October 8 this year, and this milestone birthday had me thinking about Rory's 16th birthday. On a recent rewatch, I noticed one thing about the scene I'd never seen before: when Alexis leans over to blow out the candles on Rory's birthday cake, her boa almost catches on fire until Keiko Agena (who played Lane Kim on the series) saves it at the last moment!

What episode is Rory's 16th birthday?

Warner Bros. TV

In "Rory's Birthday Parties" (Gilmore Girls season 1, episode 6), Rory's turning 16 and both Lorelai and Emily have very different ideas of how they can celebrate. Emily and Richard throw Rory a posh get together, complete with all the Chilton students who don't actually like her, while Lor gathers the residents of Stars Hollow for a laidback party.

Sookie makes a delicious cake with Rory's face on it, and when Rory leans over the blow out the candles, there's a moment when her feather boa (and a bit of Alexis Bledel's hair) get a little too close to the fire. Good thing Keiko Agena swoops in to save the day!

Warner Bros. TV

This is one of my favorite Gilmore Girls episodes because it perfectly balances the zaniness of Stars Hollow (seen in Sookie's hilarious birthday cake) with something everyone can take part in, even if we can't visit Lorelai and Rory ;).

When is Rory Gilmore's birthday?

Warner Bros. TV

Rory Gilmore's birthday is October 8, 1984! That technically makes her a part of Gen X, but you know she's still our millennial queen!

What's Rory Gilmore's zodiac sign?

Warner Bros. TV

Rory Gilmore is a Libra, which makes SO much sense! She craves peace and harmony, but sometimes her inability to choose sides really gets her into trouble. Rory could honestly pro/con list her life until the end of time, but thankfully she has folks in her corner to eventually get her out of her own head.

How old was Lorelai when Rory was 16?

Warner Bros. TV

Lorelai had Rory when she was 16 years old, so on Rory's 16th birthday, Lorelai is 32.

In what episode does Rory turn 17?

Warner Bros. TV

Since Rory's 16th birthday party is in season 1, her 17th birthday would be in season 2. We know that Lorelai and Max were supposed to get married at the end of summer, which means season 2, episode 3, "Red Light on the Wedding Night," in which Lorelai calls off the wedding, would take probably place around the end of August, while episode 10, "The Bracebridge Dinner," is around Christmastime. My guess is Rory's 17th birthday is around episode 6 or 7.

Miracles happen once in a while, which is apparent because The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works at Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's been 20 years since we last saw Mia, Lily, and Queen Clarisse (and since all three took part in one of the greatest birthday party scenes in film history. Tons of snacks! Karaoke! Mattress surfing!).

The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 remain heartfelt, uplifting, and empowering, and we'll never get tired of them. Plus, the resurgence of Y2K pop culture just makes dressing up like Mia more fun than it already was. While much of this reported film (including the cast) is still rumor-only, we do have a few tidbits to share and will keep updating as news is released.

Who's in The Princess Diaries 3 cast?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Anne Hathaway finally confirmed her return to the world of Genovia with an Instagram video in early October. But will Chris Pine be joining her?

"I don't know anything," the actor said on The Today Show on October 8. "Call Disney. Call Bob Iger. The answer is honestly I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic."

Chris' character Nicholas Devreaux, and his relationship with Mia in Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was a lot of millennial and Gen Z viewers' first enemies-to-lovers relationship, and it's safe to say we've never been the same. While Chris Pine claims he has no clue whether he'll return, his recent haircut (which is very similar to Nicholas') has fans calling his bluff.

"I need Chris Pine to return as Nicholas Devereaux looking like this in Princess Diaries 3, and I will not be taking questions at this time," one X user tweeted, while another agrees, "oh he's definitely already taping the 3rd movie as we speak and you can't convince me otherwise."

Julie Andrews and Raven-Symoné have also been a part of the franchise, but there's no word on whether they'd return either. In December of 2022, Variety reported that Julie Andrews doubts that she'll be able to return to the franchise, but we're still holding out hope!

Stay tuned for the official Princess Diaries 3 cast list!

When is the Princess Diaries 3 release date?

Walt Disney Studios

Rom-com fans will be thrilled to know Adele Lim, who worked on Crazy Rich Asians (one of the best rom-coms of the 21st Century) will direct. We don't have a release date yet, but it appears pre-production has begun. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl and Quantum Leap writer Aadrita Mukerji is working on the script, and producer Debra Martin Chase (who worked on the first two films) is returning to produce. We're all in favor of women behind the scenes, so this news gets two thumbs up from us!

Anne Hathaway (whose new movie The Idea Of You is streaming on Prime Video now) recently revealed the movie's development is going very well. “We’re in a good place,” she tells V Magazine. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

What has Anne Hathaway said about Julie Andrews?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

In her recent cover story with Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway talks about how working with Julie Andrews changed her life forever. “She respected that [fans] had a relationship to her work that spanned their entire lives and made it a beautiful experience for them,” she says of Julie stopping to sign autographs every day during The Princess Diaries. “I don’t know that I was always capable of that. So I’ve learned that I want to handle myself in a way that I’m going to be proud of at a later date.”

Anne also has a major appreciation for howThe Princess Diaries franchise as a whole turned her life upside down. "This was the film that changed my life," she says. "It felt so big at the time, and it wound up being so big, and it's kind of just gotten bigger as my life has progressed...So this is a total fusion of life and work, and all the things, and I'm just so proud to be in this movie."

What is The Princess Diaries 3 about?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

We don't have an official script, but according to sources, the film might continue the storyline from the previous two movies. Based on the books by Meg Cabot, both films follow Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), an awkward high schooler who learns she is next in line to be queen of Genovia. Makeovers, royal balls, romance, and tons of fun follow.

Gary Marshall, the director of the first two movies who passed away in 2016, told People that one idea he shared with Anne Hathaway was to set The Princess Diaries 3 in the big city: "It looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan." As someone who lives in New York City, I might be biased, but setting the story in Manhattan would be INCREDIBLE. Would Mia hang out at the Met? Would the movie feature any nods to The Devil Wears Prada? Anne Hathaway, if you need another background extra, hit me up!

Where can you watch The Princess Diaries 3?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

It's TBD whether this film would release in theaters or on streaming, but you can watch both The Princess Diariesand The Princess Diaries 2on Disney+ now ;).

What's the Princess Diaries cast saying?

Buena Vista Pictures/Walt Disney Studios

Don't fret, Princess Diaries fans, Chris Pine is TOTALLY on board for a Genovian reunion. "Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it," Pine told Entertainment Tonight. "Give me a phone call or an email."

The actor (and our personal crush) played Lord Nicholas Deveraux in 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Deveraux rivaled Anne Hathaway's Princess Mia Thermopolis for the throne, becoming her friend and love interest.

Recently, Hathaway toldPeople that the a third installment in the franchise was still in development and far from production, but it was "thrilling" to "see the level of excitement for it." However, while the movie industry gears turn slowly, she is still very much advocating for the long-awaited three-quel.
