Number One on our “hair envy” list? Blake Lively, of course. It’s a ranking that needs no explanation: Just catch a glimpse of the actress’s flowing blonde tresses twisted back into a loose braid or curled to carefree perfection and you’ll feel the jealous pangs too. While we can plait our manes to match Blake’s latest styles (and trust us, we do), we’ve been kept guessing on what it actually takes to maintain such bouncing bombshell locks. Knowing Blake’s penchant for DIY, we had a suspicion that the key to her healthy hair was more likely to be a hack than an opulent spa treatment, and as it turns out, our hunch was right. In an exclusive interview with beauty website Byrdie, Blake spills on the secret to keeping her tresses picture-perfect, and it’s a weird one.
“My mom taught me this really great beauty tip,” Blake dishes. “She used to put oil or mayonnaise on the bottom half of her hair before she would shower. That way, when she would shampoo, the soap wouldn’t strip the bottom of the hair and dry it out, making it brittle.”
As bizarre as the hand-me-down hair hack may sound — it’s one of those at-home remedies surrounded by a constant stream of “ yeah, but does it really work?” — the sandwich condiment as tresses treatment seems solid. Mayo is an emulsion of oil and egg yolks, two power ingredients when it comes to giving your hair a healthy boost — oil for silky shine and the amino acid in the yolks for promoting the formation of keratin. So thanks to Blake, we can pretty much consider this hair myth a beauty truth.
