DIY Halloween Decor: Burlap Edition

Ever wanted to throw a Halloween party but didn’t have the budget to decorate properly? We know how you feel. Holiday decorations are such an investment, especially since you only use them once a year. Luckily for you, Brit + Co. has you covered on that front. We’ve created 3 super cute and super budget-friendly DIY Halloween decor projects.

Materials:
– 2 yards burlap

– 1 large cardboard box

– box cutter

– scissors

– glue gun

– xacto knife

– spider webs

– 10 plastic spider rings

– hemp cord

– 1 bottle multi-surface black paint

– paint brush

– Crafter’s Pick fabric glue

– alphabet stencils

1. Spider Web Burlap Wreath

First thing to is to get your materials together. Cut 4 lengthwise strips from the burlap, each 3 inches wide.

Trace a large circle on the cardboard box (we used a 14-inch cake carrier base). Trace a smaller circle inside the large circle (we used a 10-inch pot lid). Use a box cutter to cut larger circle and then smaller circle, leaving you with the wreath frame.

Use a glue gun to place a strip of glue on the wreath frame. Attach two ribbons of burlap, letting the sides hang off. Place another strip of glue about an inch from the first and loosely fold over ribbon to create a loop. Repeat with all remaining strips of burlap until the entire wreath frame is covered.

Spread spider webs across the frame.

Use glue gun to attach spider rings to frame. Use hemp cord to attach a hanging cord from the frame, and you’re done!

2. Spider Table Runner

Cut 1 lengthwise strip from the burlap, 16 inches wide.

Create spider stencils by drawing a small spider on one sheet of paper and a larger spider of another sheet of paper (we used this template). Use an Xacto knife to cut out the stencils. Use stencils and black paint to create spiders on table runner.

Thin paint with a few drops of water and then use paint brush to fling paint splatters over runner. Voila!

3. Halloween Party Banner

Finally, a way to welcome all those ghouls and goblins! :)

Cut 1 lengthwise strip from the burlap, 7 inches wide. Cut the lengthwise strip into 14 rectangles, each 4.5 inches wide.

Place a thin strip of Crafter’s fabric glue across the top edge of the rectangle, then fold over about 1 inch to create a seam. Repeat with remaining rectangles. Let dry 2 hours.

Flip rectangles over. Use stencils and paint to create “Happy Halloween” letters. Let dry.

Use a safety pin to help thread hemp cord through letters. Happy Halloween!

It's almost September, and you know what that means. Back to Hogwarts day! Apple everything! Sweaters, and candles, and Gilmore Girls, oh my! With the very best parts of fall come the buzziest September movies. Some are blockbuster flicks, others are indie darlings, but they'll all become some of 2024's most iconic films. Keep reading for everything you need to know about these fall movies.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — In Theaters September 6, 2024

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Tricksy Beetlejuice is back in this very-anticipated September movie — 36 years after the original! When Lydia's (y'all remember Lydia? Who could forget her) daughter Astrid summons the ghost, the family gets very acquainted with the afterlife. This movie will make you squirm just enough to get you in the mood for Halloween.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in theaters September 6 and stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Catherine O'Hara, and Justin Theroux.

The Front Room — In Theaters September 6, 2024

A24

A bride's relationship with her mother-in-law is always a hot topic, but nobody understands how monstrous a MIL can be like Belinda. Her mother-in-law decides to move in (right after Belinda learns she's pregnant, no less), and tries to get her claws on the new baby — literally.

The Front Room hits theaters September 6 and stars Brandy Norwood, Kathryn Hunter, and Andrew Burnap.

My Old Ass — In Theaters September 13, 2024

Prime Video

This coming-of-age comedy is actually fairly deceptive. I was crying by the end! (As was the audience at the Sundance Film Festival). Elliott goes on one last trip with her friends before leaving for college, and by "trip" I mean a literal hallucinogenic trip. While her friends have very different reactions, Elliott ends up coming face-to-face with her 39-year-old self, who's full of advice — and warnings.

My Old Ass in theaters September 13 and stars Maisy Stella, Aubrey Plaza, Kerrice Brooks, Maddie Ziegler, and Percy Hynes White.

Uglies — On Netflix September 13, 2024

Netflix

Hunger Games fans will love this YA adaptation, which follows Tally, who lives in a society where everyone gets perfecting surgery at the age of 16. But when her friend disappears, and she realizes becoming a "Pretty" isn't as beautiful as it sounds, Tally sets out to change her future — and the world.

Uglies hits Netflix September 13 and stars Joey King, Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, and Laverne Cox.

Speak No Evil — In Theaters September 13, 2024

Universal Pictures

Speak No Evil hits theaters September 13, 2024 and stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough and Scoot McNairy.

His Three Daughters — On Netflix September 20, 2024

Netflix

You might be most familiar with Elizabeth Olsen as Marvel's The Scarlet Witch, but I will be singing her praises until the end of time for her work on Sorry For Your Loss. She brings that same nuanced, emotional gravity to His Three Daughters, which follows three adult sisters who come together to care for their father on his death bed. This is an absolute must-watch.

His Three Daughters hits Netflix September 20 and stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne.

Killer Heat — On Prime Video September 26, 2024

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Gotham Film & Media Institute

If you loved the noir of it all in Dakota Fanning's Ripley, then you absolutely have to check out Killer Heat. Private eye Nick is hired to investigate the accidental death of Leo in Greece, but Leo's sister-in-law doesn't believe it was an accident. Nick's not sure what to believe, especially he meets the wealthy (read: powerful) Vardakis family.

Killer Heat hits Prime Video September 26 and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Richard Madden, and Shailene Woodley.

The Wild Robot — In Theaters September 27, 2024

Universal Pictures

Robot Roz finds herself alone when she's shipwrecked on a deserted island. She has to learn to adapt to this new environment, and after meeting some of the native animals, she takes an adorable orphaned gosling under her wing (see what I did there?). I was totally not prepared to hear the cinematic version of Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather" in the trailer and I got EMOTIONAL.

The Wild Robot hits theaters September 27 and stars Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, and Mark Hamill

Wolfs — On Apple TV September 27, 2024

Apple

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are bringing their star power to this brand new September movie. The two actors play professional fixers who would rather work alone — and definitely don't want to work with each other. But when they find themselves on the same job, these lone wolves are forced to team up.

Wolfs hits theaters September 20 and stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan.

Lee — In Theaters September 27, 2024

Roadside Flix

Model-turned-war correspondent Lee Miller travels across Europe, capturing the world in the midst of World War II. As the official war photographer for Vogue, she documents the horrors she sees around her, creating some of the most iconic images of the 20th century.

Lee comes to theaters September 27 and stars Kate Winslet, Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Josh O'Connor, and Andrea Riseborough.

Megalopolis — In Theaters September 27, 2024

Meeting your partner's family for the first time can be nerve-wracking because you're never sure what to expect. Even the most confident person may start asking themselves, "Do I have something in my teeth?" or "What if their grandma thinks I'm a clown?" Trust me, no one wants to get on grandma's bad side.

Take it from someone who's witnessed a few 'Meet The Family' moments when I say there are embarrassing things you never want to do when the time comes. First impressions aren't always everything, but it doesn't mean your partner's family won't judge you if you do something that's awkward or inappropriate.

But, don't worry! Psychotherapist Rachel Goldberg, LMFT, PMH-C works with her own clients on preparing for these milestone moments, and she's ready to share some tips with you! As the founder of Rachel Goldberg Therapy in Los Angeles, CA, she specializes in things like eating disorders, family counseling, anxiety, and depression — so she knows what she's talking about!

To help prep you for the big day, here are 10 things you definitely want to avoid doing when you first meet your partner's family! With these tips in tow, you'll be ready for anything, be it that big annual barbecue, or an intimate family dinner.

1. Putting On A Front

RDNE Stock project

Just like no one likes when someone is rude or passive-aggressive, people also don't like when it seems like you're being overly nice or fake to win them over. Goldberg says, "When meeting a romantic partner's family for the first time, first it's important to be genuine. Putting on a front sets unrealistic expectations moving forward." No matter what you do, your true personality and characteristics are going to shine through eventually.

You may not want to hear this, but she also says it might not be a good idea to introduce your family to someone who should come with a "shock factor" warning. "If someone has a tendency toward crudeness or is passionate about controversial topics, they should keep that at bay for the time being."

2. Dressing Inappropriately

Rachel Claire

"Dressing appropriately for the occasion, while staying true to their personal style, is important," says Goldberg. I'm one of the most open-minded people you'll ever meet, but I'm telling you now that you're going to get a ton of side eyes if you show up to a family dinner wearing something that would make someone clutch their imaginary pearls. Stay away from the deep v-necks, short skirts, and sheer materials — you'll thank me later!

3. Calling Your Partner A Suggestive Nickname

Ba Tik

Sigh. There's plenty of discourse about whether or not you should call your partner 'Daddy' in the first place, but please don't call your partner this — or any other suggestive nickname — in front of their family. Some people may offer a knowing smirk, or think it's funny, but it doesn't make it any less embarrassing. There are plenty of nicknames and cute pet names you can use, but when in doubt: be very mindful and demure.

4. Being Critical Of The Cooking

Mister Mister

If you're going to a barbecue or holiday gathering at your partner's family's home, it's possible the menu may not be your favorite. The food may even be served potluck style, so should you come across a dish that doesn't look appetizing...don't let your intrusive thoughts win by asking who made it.

Everyone knows what it means if a person asks that, and it won't make the cook in question feel very good. For all you know, your partner's mom may have been trying something new and was already nervous about it. No matter who actually prepared what, it's easier to politely decline something instead of being rude about it. "Criticism of the environment or their partner should be kept in check," says Goldberg.

Instead, she says you can offer to "help with tasks like setting up the table or cleaning up." This will leave a much better impression!

5. Purposely Bringing Up Controversial Topics

Timur Weber

Every family is different, from their religion to their political beliefs to how they play Monopoly. While you may dig into those differences further down the line in your relationship, it's probably best to keep it light the first time you meet them.

Goldbeg says, "Maintaining a positive attitude is another key component. They should avoid making underhanded comments about their partner or bringing up issues they are unhappy with. Controversial topics, especially politics or culturally sensitive matters, should be avoided till the relationships are better established or in some cases should never be brought up."

IF someone else brings up a controversial topic that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can excuse yourself from the table so you can collect your thoughts. However, don't be the one to start an awkward conversation about religion, politics, or otherwise — it'll save you from a lot of potential awkwardness later.

5. Drinking Too Much

KoolShooters

If you want to enjoy a drink or two, that's fine! Chances are someone will be doing the same, so that's not embarrassing. Getting drunk until you're slurring your speech or stumbling all over the place is a completely different story, though. All it'll do is signal that you're unable to know when you've had enough, and this could make your partner's family think you're irresponsible. You can have a good time, but just be sure to be mindful and pace yourself!

7. Refusing To Talk To Anyone Unless Your Partner Is In The Room

Askar Abayev

I get it. Your nerves may be bad or you might hate small talk. But, you can't get to know your partner's family and vice versa unless you talk to them. People will notice if you and your partner or only comfortable talking to each other.

And if your partner does decide to join in on the conversation, make sure you don't make jokes that poke fun at them too much — it may fall flat. "They should be mindful of making jokes at their partner's expense, such as "oh now I see where they get that from." These can be fun and light, but it's always best to be more of an observer at that first meeting than taking the lead and potentially leaving a bad impression," Goldberg advises.

Want to truly make a good impression? She encourages you to talk to "as many family members as possible" instead of zoning in on one person, or no one at all.

8. Saying You Hate Kids — Especially If They're Present

Gustavo Fring

I respect anyone who chooses to be child-free, but making it a part of your personality every chance you get means you're bound to say something that rubs your partner's family the wrong way.

It's one thing to be sure you don't want to have kids, but talking about how much you hate children — especially if they're around and very much a part of the family — is beyond cringe. You're bound to not only shock your partner's family, but you'll also piss someone off. If you don't want someone to judge you for choosing not to have kids, don't judge them for choosing the opposite.

9. Looking At Your Phone The Entire Time

Anna Tarazevich

The family is definitely gonna want to chat with you or your partner, but it'll be hard if you're too focused on your phone. Goldberg says, "It's important to stay off their phone and be fully present during this first meeting."

Your partner's family will either think you're rude or too nervous to try to get to know them. Either way, it's pretty embarrassing! Instead, I'd put my phone on 'Do Not Disturb' and try to be more in the moment!

I used to curse my genetics because not only did I have horrible acne as a teen, but I also had an uneven skin tone problem. I had an inkling it was because of my dark spots, but there were times I'd experience redness too. Regardless of the cause, there was one thing I knew was absolutely true: I wanted to find a way to treat it ASAP.

Though I love sharing my journey with others, my trial and error methods won't ever replace Dr. Hannah Kopelman's expertise. She's completed two clinical fellowships in dermatology – hair loss from Columbia University and skin cancer from Boston University — and routinely treats clients at Kopelman Hair Restoration. Here are her expert tips for how to treat your uneven skin tone!

From a dermatologist's perspective, how do you define uneven skin tone?

Ron Lach

It never occurred to me that skin concerns can show up differently on others until I was older. The only thing I knew is having dark spots on my skin post-acne breakouts wasn't normal. "When I think about uneven skin tone, I'm looking at those areas where the skin's color isn't consistent—whether it’s darker spots, redness, or even lighter patches," says Dr. Kopelman.

Don't think acne is the sole reason behind this, however. She says that "sun exposure, inflammation, or conditions like melasma" can also be the cause. It's no surprise when she mentions how this can affect how people feel about their skin because I remember how insecure I felt about mine.

Are there any misconceptions about having an uneven skin tone?

Polina Kovaleva

As with anything, having misconceptions about uneven skin tones occurs. Dr. Kopelman says, "One thing I always emphasize to my patients is that uneven skin tone and uneven skin texture aren't the same thing, though people often confuse them." Interestingly enough, I've seen the two interchanged online before so it's surprising to know they're not the same.

What makes them different, you ask? "Texture issues are more about how your skin feels — like if it’s rough or has enlarged pores — while tone is all about the color variations," she adds.

The other misconception Dr. Kopelman has seen is that the older demographic only deals with having uneven skin. She said it can "affect anyone, no matter their age."

Can all skin types experience this (i.e., normal, combination, sensitive, etc.,)?

Anna Tarazevich/Pexels

This is one of those things where certain skin type 'rules' don't apply. "Whether you have normal, combination, or sensitive skin, no one is entirely immune to it," says Dr. Kopelman.

In her experience, she routinely sees patients who have uneven skin and it can the result of "sun damage, homornal changes, or even genetics."

There wasn't a ton of information about skincare when I was in high school so I was among those who thought only certain types had uneven skin tones. It's oddly comforting to know that's not true.

How can I tell if I have uneven skin tone — and what should I do when I notice it?

Sunny Skin

Like Dr. Kopelman mentioned above, seeing different colors in your skin is one of the indicators of having an uneven tone. She encourages you to revisit your skincare routine to see if there's steps you may be missing. "Are you using sunscreen daily? Sun protection is key in preventing further unevenness," she says.

But, that's not all. She recommends scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist "to get a tailored plan" that treats all of you skin's concerns.

I'm a stickler for making sure you understand your skin because the underlying cause of your uneven skin tone could be accompanied by other factors in addition to consistent acne breakouts. Only a dermatologist can guide you in the right direction.

What's the worst thing someone can do if their skin has an uneven tone?

Karolina Kaboompics

Now that you know what uneven skin is and how to recognize it, we have to talk about what not to do next. The first thing that comes to mind is abandoning the idea of scrubbing your skin. Dr. Kopelman says this is one of the worst things you can do. Over-exfoliating and using "harsh products" can make things worse though she understands why you think it might help.

"It's tempting to try to 'scrub away' the problem, but that often makes it worse. Instead, I suggest gentle, consistent care—think of your skincare routine as a marathon, not a sprint," she says.

I mention this all the time, but it's taken me over a decade to reduce my acne breakouts and skin discoloration. The truth is, my skin still isn't perfect so don't approach your routine with the idea of looking flawless.

Is uneven skin tone temporary, or is it irreversible?

Polina Tankilevitch

When your skin doesn't look the way you want, it can affect your self esteem and mood. You might also ask yourself, "Will my skin always be uneven?" The answer to that is no.

"In many cases, uneven skin tone can be improved significantly, if not completely reversed, with the right treatments and products. However, it does depend on the cause," says. Dr. Kopelman.

She's seen how "sunspots" can fade over time, but "melasama can be more persistent." This doesn't mean you'll always suffer, but she reassures things can be done "to improve the appearance of your skin."

Which brands/products do you recommend to help treat an uneven skin texture?

Karolina Kaboompics

Dr. Kopelman's been kind of enough to not only share expertise with us, but she also has product recommendations you should consider!

Here's what to know about these expert-loved products!

Dermstore

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

"I often recommend incorporating a vitamin C serum, like SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, into your routine because it brightens the skin and fights free radicals," she says.

Amazon

Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

"For exfoliation, something gentle like the Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant can work wonders without being too harsh," Dr. Kopelman adds.

Amazon

Elta MD Broad Spectrum SPF 46

"And, of course, daily sunscreen is non-negotiable — EltaMD UV Clear is a favorite of mine because it’s lightweight and great for sensitive skin," she says.

If you're struggling whit issue, know that it gets better with time and consistently. Try to be patient with yourself and your skin as you work to treat the cause of your uneven skin tone.
