There are two things we know: We love charcuterie boards in all their cheesy glory, and we love bread and butter. Butter boards basically mix the two. While butter boards aren't the same thing as charcuterie boards since they're serving a different purpose and aren't as filling, this TikTok trend is still our new favorite thing. It's also just in time for fall entertaining and all of the dinner parties that come with it.
The butter board trend started circulating around TikTok after Justine Doiron (who credits Joshua McFadden for the original idea) posted her own on the app and on her site. There are tons of ways to make this trend your own, so keep reading for the breakdown on some of our favorite ways to bring this appetizer to your next get together.
How To Make A Butter Board
What Is A Butter Board?
A butter board is like a cheese board, but instead of cheese, you spread butter across the board and add your favorite garnishes right on top.
What To Put On A Butter Board?
Aside from the butter, you can add all you favorite toppings. If you want to do a sweet board, whip up some cinnamon butter and top with chocolate and fruit slices. For a savory board, top with salt, garlic, and seeds. Or do a mixture of both for multiple flavors in one. Considering there are vegan butters, this is a great vegan charcuterie board alternative if you want a fun board without all the meat and cheese.
What Do You Make A Butter Board For?

Butter Board Hacks
Edible flowers and honey turn this butter board into something that perfectly balances salty and sweet. Both elements complement the salt and lemon nicely, and provide a full flavor experience that your guests won't be able to get enough of once they try it.
Make your butter board extra fruity by spreading apricot jam (or another jam that you like) right on top of the butter. You can also add dried fruit as one of the garnishes for some extra flavor and a variation in texture at the same time.
If you're really missing charcuterie boards, or you're not a huge fan of butter, just use goat cheese instead! It still provides that creamy base, but it gives you a cheesy flavor that cannot be beat. Hot honey adds some spice that doesn't overpower the rest of the flavor, and nuts (or seeds if you or a guest can't have nuts) provide a crunchy texture that the board lacks otherwise.
To make sure you get the best butter board you can, don't be afraid to splurge on the butter and the bread. That way you know the most important parts will taste good! Start with unsalted butter if you want to be in control of how salty the butter board gets.
If you love spicy foods, go right in with a premade spread or chili crunch that mixes different spices all together. Honey, chives, and flaky sea salt take away some of the edge while still providing a nice dose of flavor.
Adding walnuts and honey on top of your butter board is like a healthier version of the walnuts in syrup you can get at ice cream stores and we're in love. You can also cream your butter with sugar before adding anything on top to make it extra sweet.
Mango chutney, garlic, and coriander put a Desi twist on the butter board that is salty and sweet. Just don't forget the naan!
This labneh board uses Middle Easter strained yogurt instead of butter, and tops it with the delicious flavors of za'atar, olives, and mint. Our mouths are watering.
Jamón, garlic, lemon zest, and salt flakes come together with the butter to create a dish that is so good, you have to taste it to believe it.
