While fall’s short strands are still going strong, the winter hair forecast is showing a 100 percent chance of flirty layers, full fringe, playful pixies, and mid-length manes. Since most of these styles are more about creating accents than making drastic cuts, you can even achieve two trends at once if that’s how you roll. To help you embrace the change, we asked celeb hairstylists to walk us through winter’s most coveted cuts spotted on Ashley Graham, Taylor Swift, and more. Read on to learn everything you need to know to stroll into 2019 wearing red carpet-approved styles.
Face-Framing Layers
If you love the idea of middle-parted curtain bangs but aren’t ready to commit, staggering a few front layers makes a world of difference. According to David Lopez, the celebrity stylist behind Ashley Graham’s trend-setting ‘do above, this face-framing style complements every face shape and hair texture. “Ask your stylist to use your cheekbone to find where the first layer should start,” says Lopez. “That way, you can rock the look, but customize it to your own bone structureand features.” (Photo via Astrid Stawiarz / Stringer/ Getty)
To style, curl the tendrils with an S-wave technique or use a round brush to blow them out. To achieve the equal parts glam and laidback piecey separation, Lopez says to use a lightweight control product like Kenra Professional Dry Oil Control Spray 14 ($19). A few spritzes will tame frizz and flyaways while locking everything in place.
full fringe
Wispy bangs had their moment, but a bold full fringe (like Swift’s look pictured above) is shaping up to make the biggest statement in 2019. According to Linda De Zeeuw, a master stylist at Rob Peetoom Salon in New York City, the choppy, brow-grazing cut pairs especially well with oval-shaped faces thanks to the way it brings balance to elongated features. With the right technique and proper length, it’s achievable on all face shapes — just be sure to leave it up to a pro. (Photo via Steve Granitz/ Getty)
This trendy style typically works best on straight strands, but if you have some wave in your mane, you can still get the look. The trick is to have your stylist cut your fringe on dry hair, as snipping wet strands mayaccidentally lead to shorter bangs. Blow-dry your fringe with a large round brush to both polish and add volume. Finish with a spritz of brushable hairspray like Verb Ghost Hairspray ($16) to lock your bangs in place without making them look too styled.
playful Pixies
If you want a fresh start in 2019, consider following Katy Perry’s lead with a close-cut pixie. While the “Bigger Than Me” singer has an oval face shape, if your stylist tapers the sides and adds a little extra texture on top to create the elongated appeal, it will flatter all bone structures. The best thing about this style is the versatility. “You can play with the length around the face and style forwards or backward,” notes De Zeeuw. To give the pixie cut additional texture, reach for a flexible-hold hair product like Fatboy Spray Putty ($28).
Mid-Length Manes
Short hair might be one of the season’s hottest trends, but there are still options for those who don’t want to fully commit. “This style is flattering for just about everyone because you don’t have the ends of your hair near your face, so it’s not drawing attention to any specific facial feature or area,” says celebrity stylist Andrew Fitzsimons, the mastermind behind Hailey Baldwin’s shoulder-skimming strands above. If you want to upgrade the look, try adding bangs or face-framing layers to the mix for a doubly trendy ‘do. (Photo via Michael Stewart/ Getty)
To achieve Baldwin’s beachy tresses in the middle of winter, spritz Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray ($27) onto your ends. Next, reach for a curling wand like the Amika Chameleon ($300) to add tousled waves. Create a more lived-in look by gathering sections with different thicknesses (try 1-inch and 3-inch pieces) and alternating the direction in which you curl. Finish by brushing your fingers through the waves and spritzing a body-building hairspray like Wella EIMI Ocean Spray Hairspray for Beachy Texture ($20) onto strands.
