Celebrate Summer’s End With IKEA’s Swedish Crayfish Party (+ a Cheese Pie Recipe!)
Summer’s end can be on the sadder side, as the days get shorter, the weather gets cooler and we start thinking about the winter ahead. But, no worries, friends, because IKEA is here to make things a little brighter. They’re not only wooing us with their 2017 catalogue, which is all about rustic-chic minimalism at its finest (here are our top picks, btw), but IKEA is also totally making our days tastier by keeping with a certain delish Swedish tradition, the Crayfish Party: the end-of-summer event you don’t want to miss.
Going back to the 1800s, the Crayfish Party was originally based around the fact that fishing these critters was limited to just August and September and saw peeps hosting parties featuring the in-season snack. Now, Sweden’s most iconic home decor store is getting in on the fun. “In Sweden, the Crayfish Party or ‘kräftskiva’ is a loved and celebrated food tradition,” said IKEA’s Food Manager Patricia Meumann. “We look forward to sharing our Swedish heritage with our customers in a fun and festive way.”
You’ll need to nab a ticket to get in on the fun, priced at $19 per adult and $5 each for the little ones 12 and under. Or if you want to bring the whole gang, you can jump on the discounted IKEA FAMILY members price that knocks the cost for adults down to $15 and kiddos down to $3 (contact your local store for more deets on how to buy tix).
The all-you-can-eat IKEA Crayfish Party menu includes crayfish (duh!), green salad AND cucumber salad, hardboiled eggs with mayo and shrimp, Rhode Island salad with (more) crayfish, Najad salmon with horseradish sauce, Gravad lax with mustard sauce, plenty of bread and cheeses, potatoes and Swedish staple meatballs with lingonberries. And for dessert, they’ve got strawberry crumble tart, cookies and other sweets. Starving yet?
If you’re not able to make it to the party, IKEA has provided us with a handy-dandy cheese pie recipe that you’ll definitely want to try.
Cheese Pie
Ingredients & Supplies (Serves 6)
— 1¼ cup shredded IKEA OST PRÄST® (semi-hard cheese)
— 3 Tablespoons fresh chopped dill
— 1¼ cup wheat flour
— 4 eggs
— 10 Tablespoons butter
— 3 Tablespoons water
— 5 ounces heavy cream
— 7 Tablespoons chopped chives
— Salt
— Ground black pepper
Directions
1. Mix butter and wheat flour. Add water and quickly work into a dough. Leave to cool for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, roll out the dough to fit the size of your pie dish (preferably 8–9 inches in diameter). Fold the dough in about ½ inch around the edge so that it doesn’t slide down during baking. To let the steam out during baking, poke holes in the bottom of the dough using a fork.
3. Pre-bake the dough at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15–20 minutes. Mix egg, cheese, cream, chopped chives and dill. Add salt and pepper. Lastly, pour the filling in the pie dish and bake for another 25–30 minutes.
Enjoy!
