A great haircut is crucial, but an even better dye job is mandatory. Highlights can transform your whole look (and your attitude), so we polled a few of our favorite celeb colorists about the trends (and painting processes) they’re loving at the moment. Spoiler alert: There’s going to be a lot of caramel happening in 2018.
Fergie
Fergie Ferg may be known for being a color chameleon, but her go-to signature look (and the one we love the most on her) is blonde with lots of highlights. “Sandy blondes with depth at the root and contrast benefit from a modern edge and easy upkeep,” explains Matrix celebrity stylist George Papanikolas. “And by keeping more depth at the root, you don’t get a harsh regrowth line, allowing you to stretch out appointments to 12 weeks. Plus, less bleach equals healthier hair.” Try a bond productive system like Matrix Bond Ultim8 ($114) with weekly three-step follow-up treatments to keep hair in optimum condition.

Lima is proof you can still rock highlights with super dark strands. According to Papanikolas, “Soft, sun-kissed dimension in the form of caramel focused on the mids and ends gives solid black hair movement and softness.”
Hannah Jeter
Another highlight trend that’s having a major moment in the color world? Bronde. “Honeys, ambers, and caramel tones take mousy brown hair to maximum sophistication,” adds Papanikolas.
Bella Thorne
Bella Thorne, for her copper color with golden copper accents, is another favorite of Papanikolas. “Keeping the highlights tone-on-tone gives the hair movement without harsh contrast,” he says.
Janet Jackson

Celebrity stylist Larry Sims is loving Jackson’s caramel highlights right now, adding that they brighten her face and make her look younger and better than ever. “I would recommend using both the Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Color Guard Express Repair Conditioner ($6) to protect colored hair and help maintain its color, and the Smooth ‘N Shine Conditioning Polisher to make the highlights POP, while also taming flyaways and creating a sleek look,” says Sims.
Priyanka Chopra
Many dark brunettes can suffer from reddish brassy overtones when they try to go lighter, but Priyanka Chopra is not one of them. “Priyanka is one of my favorite client examples of a chocolate brunette with amber highlights,” says celebrity colorist Sharon Dorram. “This style is perfect for her as it’s not brassy, but warm and flattering on her olive skin tone.”
Jennifer Lopez
J.Lo is always #HairGoals, but her signature style is as a soft brunette with honey highlights. “She maintains the warmth in her highlights, which creates a subtle, soft, and very flattering tone for her rich skin tone,” explains Dorram. “The color is predominantly her base color, and I always like it a little lighter and concentrated around the hairline.” We agree.
Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel is the epitome of a beautiful sun-kissed golden blonde, according to Dorram. “There’s dimension and bright flecks of baby blonde throughout, and her blonde is coveted by many girls who may even be a lighter blonde base. I love when highlights light up the skin, and Jessica’s do just that!” she says.
