The Cutest Celebrity Stylist-Approved Haircuts for Fall

Fall might be back-to-school season for students, but it also offers *all* of us an opportunity to refresh our look after spending the summer soaking up the sun (safely, of course!). While many might focus on updating their wardrobe or their vanities (so many gorgeous makeup shades to choose from!), nothing serves as a more dramatic change than a haircut. And with a number of serious celebrity coif changes this year, there are loads of hair trends to screenshot and save for the salon. We spoke with a slew of celebrity hair stylists to highlight some of the hottest fall haircuts to ensure your cut is star-worthy, no matter the lengths you’re looking to reach.

Short & Sweet: Pumped-Up Pixies & Bold Bowl Cuts

2017 saw a number of celebs (think: Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne) make the big chop and, while the trend shows no sign of slowing down, this season it’s all about adding a little bit of length to switch up the style. “It seems like the girls who did this big chop are holding strong with their hair,” says the Kardashians’ go-to stylist Andrew Fitzsimons. “I love when this cut is cropped closely on the back and sides with a little length to play with on top.” So in lieu of the badass buzzcuts and close crops we saw last year, the star styles we can look forward to this season feature soft, grown-out length with lots of volume on top and the sides shorn to the scalp to maintain the shape. As trendy as this look is, the experts caution against taking the cut lightly since it requires regular maintenance — that means a trim every four to six weeks.

Another style taking shape comes courtesy of the late ’90s: the bowl cut. Yup, the look that many might remember from films like Reality Bites and Ghostis making a triumphant return as stars like Zendaya, Claire Foy, and Ruby Rose have started sporting it on the red carpet. They’re even borrowing from the boy bands from back in the day by shaving the back and sides. “There’s a little bit of length to it where you can tuck it behind your ear, but at the same time, it’s this layered, malleable texture throughout,” explains hairstylist Chelsey Pickthorn, whose work you might’ve spotted on models like Abbey Lee Kershaw and Julia Cumming. “So you can let it be free and have little pieces that poke out.”

Though some might see the cuts as limiting — after all, there’s only so much of your hair to work with — the experts say that texture is the way to play. For the bowl cuts, Pickthorn suggests following the circumference of your head as you blowdry, going clockwise first and then going counterclockwise, to maintain the style’s shape and smoothness. For pixies, she suggests using a light pomade like Ouidad’s Clear Control Pomade ($26) or hair oil like Ouai’s Hair Oil ($28) to help define and enhance your natural hair texture. Stylist Leon Gorman, who recently touched up the tresses of Michelle Monaghan and Kate Moss, agrees, noting that a touch of color, like balayage, can further enhance the natural texture, making your mane look more rock ‘n’ roll. For Gorman, it’s all about “punk textures,” he says, pointing to models like Edie Campbell, though he suggests using his own eponymous Seaweed Hair Serum ($45) to score the style at home.

Mid-Length Manes: Bobs and Bangs & Asymmetrical Lobs

According to the experts, client requests for bobs and lobs dominate their schedules this time of year. As Fitzsimmons shares, “I actually did Khloe’s cut for her weeks ago!” Stylist Robert Evan Thomas, who sits on Ouidad’s Curl Advisory Board, concurs, saying that both lengths offer a bit of beachy fun that can carry over into the new season. “Short lengths to mid-shoulder haircuts seemingly express new freedom and, after summer, when long hair has been center stage, being able to release your beauty into a great, sophisticated, dynamic movement is a welcomed adventure,” he said.

If you’ve been thinking about getting bangs, pairing them with a bob might be the best way to show it off. Most of the chin-length looks we’ve spotted on the likes of Jourdan Dunn, Saoirse Ronan, Irina Shayk, and, most recently, Amandla Stenberg, feature a bit of fringe that allows you to toy with the texture a little more. Some are even flaring out their ends with a touch of pomade for a more triangular, voluminous shape — much like what we saw at the start of the millennium.

While straighter strands might bolster the bob with blunt bangs, Pickthorn advises curly hair types to taper theirs in order to better blend with your hair as it grows out. “I feel like we’re playing around with the suggestion of a fringe where it’s off of a part where you’re getting some shorter curls that really frame the face but not that insanely structured fringe that cuts straight across,” she says. “You could have a couple of curls falling forward that suggest that fringe, but it’s not a huge chunk of weight in the front.”

On the other hand, the clavicle-grazing cuts for this season eliminate those elements to focus on the strong shape created by the blunted edge. “I think the most modern take on this cut is not including any bangs and tapering the cut to be slightly longer in the front, which is also super practical – you can still tie your hair back for a workout or a hot day,” Fitzsimmons explains. According to Pickthorn, stylists might remove weight and collapse the shape from underneath in order to maintain its shape as it grows out, such as with an undercut.

In terms of styling at home, a bit of salt spray, like Gorman’s go-to Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray ($27), and a few beachy bends created with a curling iron can keep summer going into the early part of the fall for a lob. “At the moment there’s a lot of textured shapes going on, such as the longer bob,” Gorman says. “This is really an update of a classic look, [and] women are really focused on the condition of the hair and being able to manage their hair themselves without too much fuss.” As much as we all love a head of beachy waves, most of the experts agree that sleeker looks will show off the cut’s sharp edges best, so get ready to plug in your flat iron — just not without spritzing a heat protectant like Redken’s Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer Spray ($24) before touching up the ends with a hair oil.

Lengthier Looks: Waist-Length Locks & Loads of Layers

The summer saw a slew of stars go to great lengths to make their strands stand out, with Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Jenner, Lady Gaga, and many others opting for elongated extensions. While the warmer months unsurprisingly saw strands grazing their bums and beyond, Beyoncé, Amal Clooney, Serena Williams, Gigi Hadid, SZA, and many more are maintaining waist-length manes as we start to switch seasons. The hairstylists we spoke with say the key to keeping hair healthy when it’s that long is to get regular trims to get rid of split ends and other damage from creeping up the hair’s shaft, which can lead to breakage the longer it lingers.

One way to highlight all that length: a pumped-up ponytail. Thomas points to the plethora of textured ponies that have popped up everywhere lately, including on Ariana Grande (of course), noting that they’re versatile enough to work in any environment, even when the wind starts blowing. “Textured ponytails are a perfect way to showcase individual beauty and get the iconic look,” he says, suggesting adding a hair accessory to the style for a bit of bling. “It’s a perfect resolution [for] that important second day look for the gym, work, or red carpet.”

Another blast from the past that’s making a triumphant return is layers. But these aren’t the super structured snips that many of us sported in the 2000s. Pickthorn says that the look is a bit more shaggy, “playing around with that sexy, Brigitte Bardot framing around the face or the French fringe where it’s softer on the face.” It’s something we started spotting during Haute Couture season when models like Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss started working the more tender take on the trend, with Bebe Rexha hopping onto the bandwagon right before the VMAs. Gorman is happy to see the trend gain strength, explaining, “It’s always better to have some layers in your cut to create movement, whether it’s long or short.”

While air-drying hair that long can take forever when the temperature starts to dip, you’ll want to do everything you can to prevent damage from heat tools. Even if you’re using a diffuser for your curls or textured tresses, Pickthorn advises everyone to use a heat-protecting primer, like Davines Hair Assistant Blow Dry Primer ($35) prior to styling. “I’ve been playing around with that on wet hair and then blow drying since it says that you should,” she says, noting that it also works wonders when whipped together with a curl cream. “It has a great anti-humidity [effect] and helps build body, movement, and texture.”

As for cutting the perfect layers, she says that following the shape of your head will give it a nice curvature with the option to flip it out à la Farrah Fawcett, or curl it in for a more piecey and wispy effect. And if you have curls, scrunch those areas with a soft-hold styler like Ouidad’s VitalCurl Define & Shine Styling Gel-Cream ($26). As she says, “Play around with scrunching your hair a little bit, going toward that not crunchy but separated look. And if you want to pick up a curling iron or pick up that flat iron to give it a more finished and polished look, just do that on the top surface layer.”

There you have it: Six looks for one seriously good fall hair transformation. The only question is, which will you choose?

Last year, some of us celebrated the holidays apart from our families for the first time. COVID has brought with it many changes, some of them arguably positive (like increased flexibility to work from home), some difficult (such as the realization of vastly different political and social views between family and friends), and some horrible (obviously, the health implications of a global pandemic). However, for some of us, celebrating the holidays without family members isn't exclusively due to COVID. In addition to so many of us living in different areas than our families of origin, some of us simply don't have close bonds with the people we grew up around. Sometimes, this can cause loneliness.

If you're not close with your family members, the holidays can be a difficult time. This is doubly true if you don't have a close circle of friends to call upon. But make no mistake, if this sounds like your situation, you're not alone — there are thousands of other people going through the same struggles you are. We sat down with Irad Eichler, founder of Circles, a website that connects people who are sharing similar struggles, like heartbreak, grief, or loneliness. Here are some of Eichler's tips for coping — and even thriving! — during the holiday season when you're not planning on spending it with your family, for one reason or another.

Don't Fall For "Perfect Families" On Social Media

Laura Chouette

The first VERY important step to having a joyous holiday season when you're going it alone is to stop believing the narrative that others' family situations are perfect, Eichler says.

"Remember people only post a moment in time, and only the moments when they look their happiest and best."

In addition to the fact that everything you see on social media is curated for the 'gram, it's also important to remember that by focusing on what others have and you lack, you risk failing to see the great things at play in your own life.

"These holiday periods can become a time of focusing on who and what we don't have, rather than who or what we do, and can cause a negative spiral into depressing and dreadful feelings of inadequacy," says Eichler.

Gratitude is the reason for the season, after all. So instead of only seeing the negative, try some gratitude journal prompts to help you focus on what's actually really wonderful about your life right now.

Make An Effort To Deepen New Connections

Joel Muniz

While it may seem like everyone has friends and family to spend time with during the holiday season, that doesn't mean no one is available for deepening a blossoming relationship or new friendship.

"Make a list of people you can or would like to connect with, and try to reach out to at least one of them," advises Eichler.

Reaching out doesn't have to mean a big plan or an hour-long conversation. Even a quick text letting a friendly coworker know you're thinking about them can go a long way toward deepening the relationship and moving it in the direction of closer friendship.

Don't have an acquaintance in mind? Then it's time to make new acquaintances. What's more in line with the Christmas spirit than attending a Meetup or event full of people eager to make new friends?

"Join groups with similar interests to yours, such as hiking, baking, or games. Push your boundaries and be brave - you might find new people who have much in common with you."

Give Back

Priscilla Du Preez

The holiday season is a great time to focus on giving back to your community, and coincidentally, acts of generosity and kindness are known to reduce loneliness and help people feel happier. One study found that knowing a few of your neighbors and doing small acts of kindness for them — such as cheering them up, listening to them, mowing their lawn, providing advice about local business recommendations and job opportunities, and chatting over the fence — was statistically correlated with feeling less lonely and having a lower risk of depression.

Helping out elderly neighbors can be a particularly gratifying way to give back.

"Notice older lonely people in your neighborhood or community who might have no family at all, and offer to help them," says Eichler. "These can become mutually meaningful connections, and help you 'adopt' a grandparent."

Connect With Others Online

Thought Catalog

Finally, use the Internet for its highest and best purpose: to connect people. Whether you're using Meetup to find in-person events, digital forums for having conversations about special interests, or programs like Circle for getting support from others in your situation, the opportunities to create new connections are practically endless.

"There are many interest groups that can be found digitally, where or any person can connect with others in the same life stage, going through the same challenges, or who would like to explore the same interests," Eichler states. "Meaningful connections can be formed easily in these circumstances. The Internet enables us to find and connect to people all over the world who fit this, and to whom we can become more easily attached, as we are able to find people with the exact interests that energize us."

From Kamala Harris-inspired bobs to silky Lindsay Lohan-esque tresses, the season of the silk press (or straighter hairstyles) is officially here! It's been fun watching watching TikTok videos of women going to the salon to get their hair straightened, but it made me ask myself if people truly know how to maintain this style at home. It's one thing to watch a licensed hairstylist work their magic, but the upkeep may not be as straightforward for some people!

Luckily, celebrity hairstylists, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew and Natalie Lamorena, are here to answer all my burning questions. Sturdivant-Drew has over 20 years of experience working in the film and commercial industry, styling clients such as Kerry Washington, Lucy Liu, and Ashley Graham. She also worked on TV series like Suits and the Oscar-nominated film Ray. Lamorena owns Polished Pub Hair & Nail Bar— not to mention she invented the viral "Headicure" service for clients who love the idea of getting a manicure while receiving the best blowout of their lives. And with all that experience, the two of them have plenty to say about silk presses.

TL;DR

  • You should rely on professionals for the majority of your silk presses, but you can maintain them at home with "the right tools and products."
  • Different hair types require different temperatures and products — be sure to research and check with your hair dresser to make sure your treating your hair the right way.
  • Don't get a silk press if you've recently straightened your hair.
  • Heat protectant is key for any silk press or hair straightening.
  • Naturally curly or textured hair should limit silk presses to once or twice a month; other hair types should keep it to no more than once a week.
  • Be sure to wrap your hair correctly and use a bonnet to maintain your style.

How do you know when to straighten your hair at home or go to the salon?

Sephora

Desperate times call for desperate measures when you're due for a hair appointment and can't book one. I'm sure all of us have turned into an armchair hairstylist by giving ourselves a trim, quick haircut, or dye job. You've probably even watched a few tutorials about how to give yourself a homemade silk press or blowout. I know I've recently purchased a few things to help me maintain my hair at home, but should we be straightening our hair at home?

Lamorena says, "While it’s possible to straighten hair at home, I’d recommend going to a professional for the best results. Stylists know how to work with different hair types, adjust heat settings accordingly, and use high-quality products that protect your hair." If we decide to forego a stylist's expertise, she says we can "accidentally cause damage with uneven heat or over-processing."

Sturdivant-Drew agrees that it's best to see a stylist "for the first few silk presses," but it's not impossible to safely straighten your own hair. "If you have the right tools and products, along with research, you can achieve this hairstyle at home," she says.

How should different hair types approach a silk press?

Sephora

Just like everyone doesn't have the same skin complexion or undertones, hair types can differ too. This means someone with a fine hair isn't always going to have the same routine as someone with thicker strands — which is why all silk presses aren't the same. "There's definitely no one-size-fits-all approach. The technique used depends on the client’s hair type and texture," Lamorena confirms. This isn't to scare you, however!

Sturdivant-Drew says, "The process of getting a silk press is pretty standard — prepping the hair with shampoo, conditioner, and heat protectant, followed by straightening with a blow dryer and flat iron, and finishing with a lightweight oil or serum."

She and Lamorena do agree that some hair textures require a little more than others though. Lamorena says you could only need "a simple blowout and flat iron" while someone may need "more intensive treatments like keratin or a Brazilian blowout for longer-lasting results." If your hair is very curly or textured — and you're ultimately not seeing the results you want — she says chemically straightening your hair is another option. However, Sturdivant-Drew reminds me, "Stylists usually adjust heat settings based on their client's hair health and texture."

Either way, we always recommend you check with your stylist before making any permanent or lasting decisions!

What should you avoid doing before getting a silk press?

Mike Jones

Getting a silk press doesn't always involve chemicals, but there are still things you need to avoid before your appointment. Unlike the steps you may follow at home, Lamorena wants you to "avoid loading your hair with a bunch of heavy products " because this can "make the straightening process less effective and lead to more heat being used" than you need. Also, she doesn't want you to wash your hair because "natural oils protect your hair from the heat."

It probably goes without saying, but you also shouldn't book a silk press appointment if you've already straightened your hair. "...that can make it harder for the stylist to work with and could increase the risk of damage," says Lamorena. Besides that, Sturdivant-Drew advises against "using color or relaxers should be avoided before getting a silk press" because "this could lead to a lot of breakage."

What increases a risk of heat damage with this style?

Amazon

As gorgeous as silk presses are, it's possible to use "too much heat," according to Lamorena. She says, "People tend to crank up the heat on their flat irons and blow dryers, but that can seriously damage the hair cuticle, especially if your hair is fine or already fragile." Something I've learned over time is that a licensed and experienced hair stylist has better knowledge of what's really going on with our hair. They're able to have a clearer view of your scalp, roots, split ends, and more.

The other thing that contribute to damage is not protecting your hair. Lamorena implores that heat protectant products are "are crucial for minimizing damage." Even if you use the right products, you could be straightening your hair way too often. It's normal to want to have straighter hairstyles for a little while, but you should keep in mind that you don't want to overdo it.

"Not prepping or using a heat protectant on your hair will cause a lot of damage. Silk presses require a lot of heat, so it's best to use good heat protectant," adds Sturdivant-Drew. She personally prefers to use Smooth Moisture's Thermal Hair Strengthener because "their system is built for silk presses specifically." She loves that it truly upholds against heat and "adds a nice shine to the hair" once you apply it.

When would it be recommended that a client avoid getting a silk press?

Kaboompics.com

Here comes the not so fun part. As much as you don't want to hear this, your hair may not be able to handle getting a silk press right now. "If your hair is already damaged, it's best to hold off on straightening. Hair that's brittle, dry, or over-processed can be further damaged by heat styling," says Lamorena. What you can do in the meantime is help strengthen your hair by giving yourself "deep conditioning treatments," according to Lamorena.

This is completely up to you and your stylish, but Lamorena suggests staying away from having your hair straightened "during really humid months...if you're prone to frizz" because "the style may not last as long."

Is there a limit to how often clients should receive a silk press?

Tomaz Barcellos

I'm not an expert, but even I know too much of something can become a bad thing. In the case of using excess heat, I can imagine the implications of that over time. Lamorena says, "There's definitely a limit. You don't want to be straightening your hair too often," and shares her rule of thumb for textures:

  • Naturally Curly or Textured Hair — Limit silk presses to once or twice a month to avoid weakening the hair or losing your curl pattern.
  • Other Hair Types — Keep it to no more than once a week.

All hair types are capable of experiencing "long-term damage," but giving "your hair a break between sessions helps maintain its health," Lamorena says.

Sturdivant-Drew stresses, "Taking a break between silk presses is important in allowing your hair to recover and maintain the health of your hair. I recommend limiting your silk presses to every 6-8 weeks."

How can clients maintain this style at home during the fall?

Sephora

Even though cooler temperatures means you won't have to fight against possible frizz, you still have to take care of your silk press. "Maintaining a straight style during the fall can be tricky with cooler weather, wind, and dryness in the air, but it’s doable," says Lamorena. She suggests that you use:

  • Use a flat iron with adjustable heat settings to avoid unnecessary damage. Tools like the Dyson Corrale or GHD Platinum+ are solid options
  • A wide-tooth comb is great for detangling without pulling or breaking the hair

"Keeping up with a regular routine and using the right tools and products can really help your style last, even through the challenges that fall weather brings," she says.

No matter what your hair type is, Sturdivant-Drew suggests "wrapping your hair correctly and using a bonnet" as they're "key to maintaining" a silk press. Similar to what Lamorena said earlier, Sturdivant-Drew believes "humidity is your worst enemy...so try to avoid humid environments as best as possible!"

October 22, 2024 – Zach Bryan Announces His Breakup With Brianna Chickenfry

On October 22, 2024, after some recent speculation that Zach Bryan and Brianna Chickenfry split up, Zach took to his Instagram stories. The country star said, "Addressing something: Brianna and me have broken up with [each other] and I respect and love her with every ounce of my heart. She has loved me unconditionally for a very long time and for that I'll always thank her."

He continued, noting, "I have had an incredibly hard year personally and struggled through some pretty severe things. I thought it would be beneficial for both of us to go our different ways. I am not perfect and never will be. Please respect Brianna's privacy and space in this and if you have it in your heart, mine too."

To wrap it all up, he closed by apologizing to his fans. He said, "With everything I am and to anyone I let down, I am sorry. I try my best in everything. I failed people that love me and mostly myself."

Brianna hopped on her own Instagram stories shortly there after. She posted, "Hey guys I'm feeling really blindsided right now. Gonna hop off social media for a while and attempt to heal privately, when I'm ready I'll be back and ready to talk. I love you guys so much thank you for all of your kind words. Remember you are so loved and everything's always gonna be okay 🫶"

The Brianna got on Youtube next, posting a raw, emotional video about the situation. Sitting on the floor of her bathroom, she opened up as much as she could in the moment about her breakup. She said, "I just woke up to Zach posting on his Instagram that we broke up and I had no idea that post was going up. He didn't text me, he didn't call me. I just woke up to a bunch of texts, like, 'Are you okay?'"

Brianna, with her teary eyes and red face, explained she's been crying for "five days straight." She said, "I'm at the point where it's like, how can you give someone everything and love them so unconditionally, like through stuff that you shouldn't because you just love them and you want them... like you see the good in them?"

The internet personality said that this is all "so embarrassing" and "really, really heartbreaking." She elaborated that the couple broke up on October 21, but wanted to process on her own and "didn't want it to be public."

Much like her Instagram story, she told her audience that she'll come back when she's ready.

November 7, 2024 — Brianna Claims Zach's Emotionally Abusive, Wanted $12Mil NDA

Well, it appears this week, Brianna decided she's ready. On Barstool Sports' BFF's Pod November 7, 2024, Brianna gave an inside look at the breakup unlike any other. Not only did she claim Zach was abusive, but she also alleged that he offered her a $12 million NDA to "not talk about the relationship."

After saying it's been the hardest year of her life, she said. "I'm still scared right now because I'm scared of him. My brain's rewired and I'm scared to make him mad and last week, I didn't want to talk about it 'cause I was scared."

Brianna then described the alleged emotional abuse. She noted that everything was cyclical and that he would build her up only to break her back down again. "There was always another excuse as to why he was treating me so poorly and why I'm crying myself to sleep every night, why he's screaming at me," she said. "And then you wake up, it's the apology, it's the 'I'm going to be better like I need you in my life,' but if you've been through this — I don't expect people to understand emotional abuse if you haven't been through it. I hope you never have to go through it but if you've been there you know what I'm talking about."

Not only does Brianna allege she was offered an NDA, but she said that other women that came before her had to sign their own agreements. She declined the offer because she didn't want to "sign away [her] experiences and what [she] went through to protect someone that hurt [her]." She also wanted to share this experience for other women who've suffered something similar.

And when it comes to the logistics of losing out on the famous lifestyle and alleged $12 million? She said, "It was never about the money — I was with the dude because I loved the dude."

November 8, 2024 — Zach Quit Touring Amid Abuse Allegations

On November 8, 2024, Zach posted on Instagram — where he clearly loves to share all his big news — that not only is his new single "High Road" out today, but that he's also ending his tour early. Read his full statement here:

After not being home for a year and a half I drove out to my mothers gravestone in the dead of night a few days back on familiar Oklahoma roads and I came to realize just like in the past, that she never would call me again

Told her I quit touring because I got accepted to get my masters in Paris next year, I told her I was back in Oklahoma, told her about all my best friends in New York and all the nights we howled with the moon, told her about the immeasurable laughter my band and me have shared these last five years, all the calluses on my finger tips, every tear shed, told her about making it on The Rolling Stone and most importantly told her about porch swinging with my beautiful sister.
I wrote the chorus for this song a month or two back and finished it when I realized I was blessed with all these things.

I figured it was about time I released it.

Thank you guys for listening to ‘This Worlds a Giant’ last night and thank you to all the people who love me; who have truly carried the weight with me.

Seems that all these Quiet Dreams have gotten much too heavy but I’m home now and I’ll hold you through the pain.

High Road is out today and I appreciate all of you"
