Celebrity Stylists Spill Their Fave Products for Beach-Wave Hair

Sea salt waves and summer are a match made in warm-weather heaven. No matter your hair texture or length, when you dive into salty water you’re bound to come out with some seriously enviable strands. Since achieving these #hairgoals without a nearby beach is trickier than leaving all the sand by the ocean, we polled the pros on how to fake it till you make it. Below some of the industry’s top hairstylists share their essential products, tools, and styling hacks for recreating beach waves at home. You’re welcome.

Jen Atkin, Celebrity Stylist and Founder of OUAI Haircare

“The OUAI Wave Spray ($26) is essential! Most sea salt sprays are drying because salt dries out your strands, so you have to use it in combination with a hair oil to get the results you’ll want. That’s not the case with this spray, which uses rice protein to create texture in the hair instead of salt. Just spritz on damp or dry hair (from roots and to ends) and let air-dry to enhance your natural wave pattern, or twist random strands for more defined waves. Once dry, scrunch in a little more spray and you’re good to go!

“Another one of my favorite tips for getting no-fuss waves is ‘the clip trick.’ Spray damp hair generously with Wave Spray, then use duckbill clips to create a dent in the hair, pushing the hair up at the root, clipping into place, then pushing the hair up underneath it, and clipping into place until the entire head has been clipped and the hair is in an S-pattern. Let air-dry or blow-dry, then remove the clips, scrunch, and you’ve got beach waves.”

Sarah Potempa, Celebrity Stylist and Founder of The Beachwaver Co.

“The Beachwaver S1 ($129) is a self-rotating curling iron that gives gorgeous waves. Place your hair in the small clamp, tap the arrow away from your face and hold for three to four seconds, then release the clamp and slide the iron down and repeat. Another wave hack is to braid your hair (while wet) in two braids and, once dry, remove the elastics and voilà. If you feel like the top of your hair is looking too much like a perm after taking out the braids, create a fun half-up topknot style and leave the rest of your waves down for any party after the pool.”

Felix Fischer, Celebrity Stylist

“The key to mastering beachy waves is that you don’t want them to look frizzy, fuzzy, or dry, so make sure to use a nourishing curl shampoo and conditioner and use dry shampoo to finish off the look. Start with Davines Love Curl Enhancing Shampoo ($26) and Conditioner ($30), then massage Kérastase Mousse Bouffante ($28) into the hair, followed by a dime-sized amount of serum (for shine) like Lanza Silk Serum ($37). Then either air dry, squeeze the hair, or use a diffuser and finish off with Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo ($44) to lift the hair up and give it a more life-like feel. You want natural, not stiff.”

Christophe Robin, Celebrity Colorist and Founder of Christophe Robin Hair Care

“My favorite products for the sun, sand, and surf are Christophe Robin Lavender Oil ($47) and Daily Hair Cream With Sandalwood ($43). Both contain SPF 6, so you can apply them before going out into the sun to protect your color, and the moisturizing cream helps maintain flyaways while giving your hair natural hold and shine. As for my go-to styling secret… as soon as you get out of the pool or ocean, rinse your hair and towel it dry, then apply two to three dollops of lavender oil and pull your hair up into a high messy bun on top of your head. Let that air-dry, then take it down in the evening for boho waves worthy of Gisele Bündchen.”

Naté Bova, Celebrity Stylist at Warren Tricomi

“For wavy hair, I recommend the Shu Uemura Wonder Worker Air Dry/Blow Dry Multi-Tasking Primer ($33). All you have to do is work (or comb) this leave-in conditioning spray through your locks and let air-dry for killer beachy waves. For straight hair, use L’Oréal Professional Beach Waves Spray ($28). Spray into wet hair, power dry until messy, then touch up with a wand for refined waves. The texture your hair has from the spray will curl beautifully.”

Kendall Dorsey, Celebrity Stylist

“For a wet and wavy style, I love Oribe Foundation Mist ($32) for hydration and then I follow that up with Herbal Essences’ Totally Twisted Curl Scrunching Gel ($5) to enhance texture. For a dried-wavy style, diffuse hair with the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($400) then create lived-in texture with a few well-placed flat iron waves and finish with Dove Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($2).”

Temur, Lead Stylist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger Salon

“Sally Hershberger 24K Beach Glam Mineral Wave Spray is a texture spray that creates tousled waves that everyone loves. It’s super easy to use, whether you use it at home before you leave or throw it in your beach bag. Spritz onto dry hair, then let it air-dry or even apply a little heat to it for extra texture.”

Leo Izquierdo, Co-founder of IGK Hair Care

“My clients love IGK Beach Club Volumizing Texture Spray ($29) because it’s a salt-free formula (with glycerin and gluten-free wheat protein instead of salt) that adds waves and body to the hair without drying it out or leaving it sticky. The aerosol application also gives you a light, even coverage that you can build up depending on how much texture you want. For all-over texture and volume, just spray from roots to ends and massage or scrunch in. For more defined waves, take small sections and twist and spray each section, then let them fall out naturally. For curly hair, scrunch and twist as you spray to encourage your natural curl and to add shine and hold.”

Garren, Celebrity Stylist and Co-Founder of R+Co

“Choosing the right products for styling waves is very important, starting with your shampoo and conditioner. Different hair types need different products, and the most common mistake is not applying the products properly for the end result. R+Co One Prep Spray ($21) is designed to even porosity and let the styling products do their jobs more effectively. R+Co Dallas Thickening Spray ($12) is my go-to for hold and flexibility and the R+Co Outer Space Flexible Hairspray ($17) can be used on sections of hair right before using a curling iron, but let it dry to avoid steam. Finish with a small amount of R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil ($25) for shine or R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray ($26) for a rougher, matte texture.”

Johnny Lavoy, Celebrity Stylist

PRO Beauty Tools Professional 3-in-1 Copper Ceramic Wand Kit is everything you need to create the ultimate beach style. The kit has three different sized barrels so you can create looks anywhere from tight tousled curls to a smooth boho vibe. A couple of more important tips to remember when creating a relaxed beach wave is to never curl the ends. I like to leave the last three to five inches out of the wand so I can create a more natural looking wave. Also, give the curl a little tug after releasing it from the wand — this will soften the wave and give it more length. If you want a flatter wave, try twisting the section of that piece while you wrap it around the wand, and if you want a fuller wave, keep the hair flat as you wrap it around the wand, then finger-comb your hair to separate the curl.”

It's getting to be that time of year where everyone's looking to switch up their hairroutine just a bit — it's the perfect time to try someone slightly new to welcome the new season. But if you're anything like me, then you're portably looking for something that is fun and new but still super low maintenance. I just want to be able to get a haircut that makes styling my hair much easier, not harder — is that too much to ask?

We've all gotten those haircuts that ended up being way too much work in the end, so we asked the experts to get some low maintenance hair inspo for those of us that have medium length hair. We talked toWilliam Whatley(celebrity hairstylist), Katelyn Ellsworth(The Roslyn salon), Bryce Scarlett (celebrity hairstylist), Nickie Alton (Master Stylist), Rachel Eggie (Salon owner), and Terri Rehkopf (Ippodaro Salon) for their hot takes and opinions. Keep scrolling to read their best tips!

Textured Curtain Bangs

Instagram/@brycescarlett

This textured curtain bang — where your bangs are parted down the middle and styled with soft, feathered layers that frame the face — is a super versatile haircut, as shown on Daisy Edgar Jones. These are definitely an upgrade from the classic curtain bangs you may be used to seeing all over the internet lately!

Celeb hairstylist, Bryce Scarlett, let us know that the texture adds movement and a natural, effortless vibe to the overall look — making it super easy to style! The effortless look matches the vibe of the season this fall.

Long Bob

Claire Craig

Celebrity Hair Stylist William Whatley said that transitioning to a medium length bob is going to give you so many options, whether it’s layered or all one length. And since it's not too short, Whatley mentioned that you'll be able to wear it up or pull it back, freeing your face on those days when you just can't deal with it in your face. Whether you have a fringe with the bob or you don’t have a fringe with the bob, it allows you to create some fun options with this particular hairstyle

As one of William's signature cuts, he particularly loves doing a very layered bob to create a lot more movement with just a blow dryer and a toss of the head. You get a nice style with volume by styling it that way! However, with a bob that's all one length, you can just let it dry and go. We love the sounds of that!

Long Layers

Nickie Alton

Another amazing style for our girls with medium length hair? Some long layers. Hair stylist, Nickie Alton recommends these because of how they make your hair flow when styling. According to Alton, these long layers will help to add some “movement” in your every day style.

Long layers also tend to grow out seamlessly, giving a more effortless lived in look. This style is one of my personal go-tos because of the endless styling options — you can wear it messy and lived in, straight, or curled. The world is your styling oyster!

Textured Short-Medium Length Cut

Nickie Alton

Alton also recommends this short and sweet hairstyle! It's on the shorter side of medium length hair, and we're fully obsessed with it! This haircut will really help to frame your face, and define your features. Plus, with the texture from the layers, it will be so easy to style! Easy maintenance = big win for us lazy girls!

Soft Layers

Rachel Eggie

Rachel Eggie Gibbs, Owner of EGGIE Salon Studio, recommends these beautiful soft layers and long bangs to help enhance your natural hair texture. This means that you can embrace your natural wave or curl pattern without extensive styling, making it easy to manage. So this is curly-haired girl approved, which we love to hear! This also require less trims, because the more it grows out, the easier it is to maintain!

Light, Layered Strands

Katelyn Ellsworth

Katelyn Ellsworth, of The Roslyn salon, also gave us some great tips for medium length of hair. She let us know that you want to cut for the texture of their hair specifically. If you consider yourself low maintenance, then you're most likely not doing a lot of heat styling on a regular basis, so you want to cut your hair keeping that in mind, too. (AKA get a hair cut that is great for air drying!)

Given the unique texture needs, these layers will differ from person to person! Face framing layers are good that fall naturally and create some style without daily effort. Lightly layered strands are also a great call as these don't require a lot of styling. Whatever you go for, this easy look is A+ for sure!

Blunt Cut

Katelyn Ellsworth

Lastly, Ellsworth recommended this blunt cut for low maintenance gals! She says that this cut is also a great option because it makes your hair look healthy and thick without having to style! I, personally, love getting a blunt cut because it makes my hair look so much more luscious and full!

Brie Larson takes wellness very seriously. And considering she's saved the universe as Captain Marvel and fought alongside King Kong in Kong: Skull Island, prioritizing her health only makes sense. I got up close and personal with the Oscar-winning actress at Thorne's Mocktail Club in New York City on October 8, where she told me that in the pursuit of wellness, she's "always" seeking to feel "happy and safe in my body."

  • Brie Larson tells Brit + Co that movement, breathing techniques, and temperature changes help her feel "happy and safe in my body."
  • When it comes to her work, she says she chooses stories with messages she'll "be able to live with for the rest of my life."
  • She also reveals the best piece of advice she's received, and says keeping it in mind "makes things easier."

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

But even Larson has days she feels off, saying she knows that feeling "very well," and whether it's seasonal blues or mental health days, she knows routine is where she thrives — and seasonal affective disorder lamps. "Light is a big game changer for me because I grew up in California," she says.

To engage her other senses, she relies on movement, breathing techniques, and temperature changes to keep in touch with her body. "A hot bath, a cold shower, both — anything that sort of wakes your brain up and kind of jolts it," she says. "I have a pretty demanding schedule and I truly don't have room to not feel like I'm present in my life. And so you come up with ways to figure out how to do that."

That includes everything from drinking plenty of water and prioritizing sleep to packing foam rollers and bands in her carry on. "It looks like a clown bag!" she says. "I always do [those exercises] every morning because even if I don't want to do it, which I always don't want to do it, I feel a lot better after I do it."

Thorne

Admittedly, that's exactly how I feel some days about making breakfast — but a powerhouse like Larson knows how important fueling our bodies is. "Pretty consistently I'm having an egg, like a breakfast sandwich, egg on toast first thing in the morning," she says. "I can't think beyond that for breakfast because I wake up so early. It's like there's no creativity happening in the morning. I'm sorry. No."

And while her mornings are all about wellness, her evenings are all about getting cozy, and she tells me her dream night in includes playing a new video game, wearing Gelato Pique sweatpants, and ordering Thai food. But when she's in the kitchen? "I've been making pasta and sausage quite a bit and I make tacos quite a bit. I mean, I kind of just do like protein and veggies and a little bit of a carb," she says.

Walt Disney Studios / Marvel Studios

Cozy nights in wouldn't be the same without a movie, and there's a very good chance you've seen Larson on your screen recently, whether you're rewatching Captain Marvel, 13 Going on 30, or Lessons in Chemistry. But how does the actress consistently choose such beautiful, inspiring pieces to work on? She equates the feeling to having a crush.

"When I feel like [a story] hits something that lives so truthfully in me that I just want to know if it's true to other people," she says. "I just know that we all have more that's the same than different...Film and television, it lives in a way that is beyond me physically. So I'm here talking to you, but anybody can be watching whatever they want. And so I try my best to think through what the pieces are saying so that they go out in the world and I don't get to be at the end of it and explain it or tell people what to feel or what to take from it. It lives a life outside of me. So I try and make sure that it has a complete message in it that I feel like I'll be able to live with for the rest of my life."

Apple TV+

Just like Carol Danvers and Elizabeth Zott empower so many viewers, Brie Larson says she feels empowered by her own Hollywood heroes. "Earlier in my career, like when I was trying to visualize what kind of career I wanted, it was Toni Colette and she's still a hero of mine, but she was truly the one that I was like, 'I want to disappear into characters the way she does.'"

"There's so many incredible [actors]," she continues. "Some of them are people that are more my age and some are older than me. But that's the fun part of my job is that there's so many good people and so many things that are getting made. And so it just feels like we're constantly kind of maneuvering, and when they take on certain roles and represent certain things, it frees up for other people to do other things. And so we kind of all work as a unit."

One movie on the horizon that I'm excited for is Mattel's new American Girl movie. Like many 80s and 90s kids, Brie Larson loved American Girl dolls — and borrowed her stage name from pioneer Kirsten Larson! And just like the rest of us AG kids, she tells me she can't wait for the movie. "I've also seen that there's going to be adult Halloween costumes, which I'm also very excited about," she says. Will she be grabbing a Kirsten one for herself? "I just might!"

Q+A With Brie Larson

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

What's the first thing you did after you won your Oscar?

I probably drank champagne...I drank champagne and I put sneakers on, and then I went to the airport.

What's the best piece of advice you've received?

"When I think I know, I miss so much." We all get stuck in these things — I think an easy one to think about is like, you're in a fight with your sibling or your partner, and you are just so right in how angry you are. And then maybe the next day you wake up and you're like, "Maybe there was another side to that." And so we miss things when we're in a space where we believe that we know. Having an openness to what something can be or that things can be different than what you think makes things easier.

Thorne

What's on your holiday bucket list?

I love the holidays. Because I'm in California, I really am looking forward to this year having a chilly winter. I love a cold winter, cozy winter. I love Christmas markets, so I'll definitely hit things like that. All the little holiday markets pop up around, yeah, it's just like a rare time when everybody is resting at the same time.

What are you watching, reading and listening to right now?

Okay. I am reading a book called Patricia Wants To Cuddle. I am watching Love is Blind season 7 because I am not silly. And listening to Chappell Roan, obviously.

My biggest hair pet peeve is that my hair is naturally quite frizzy, and the fact that it's recovering from heat damage doesn't help. As you can imagine, it takes quite a lot to bring my hair back to life when I wake up. Thankfully, my all-time fave, Targethas a top-rated beauty section — and I went through all their products to find the best ones to save you from frizzy and damaged hair. Let's get our gorgeous locks back in no time together, bestie! Without further ado, here are my 11 fave products for all your frizzy hair needs!

Target

Eva NYC Primer

This 10-in-1 primer works wonders on your hair! It helps to strengthen your strands, protect against heat or hot tools, and reduce frizz — which is just what we're looking for! I would definitely make sure to use a spray like this one to help with any damage.

Target

Olaplex Bond Maintenance Shampoo

A lot of times frizzy hair can be incredibly weak from all the damage it's encountered — whether through heating tools or just your typical bedhead — so you'll need to repair it with a strengthening shampoo like this very well-loved Olaplex option. I've used it multiple times when my hair needs some extra love, and I can't be bothered to get a haircut. Definitely a life-saver!

Target

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer Brush

This Revlon hot brush boast over 7,000 rave reviews — no wonder Target featured it on their top-rated list! The One-Step is extremely user-friendly and easy to use, while also helping to reduce the frizz in your hair more than your average hot tool. You'll seriously love the volume and lift it gives your hair, too! Grab this beloved hair dryer brush for under $50!

Target

K18 Leave-In Repair Mask

The product that will really help you change the game for your frizzy or damaged hair is a leave-in mask. Hydrating damaged hair is really important to make sure that it doesn't dry up further or get even weaker, specifically around the roots of your hair where new growth appears. This leave-in mask will enrich your hair with peptides, vitamins, and jojoba oil for ultimate soft-ness!

Target

Raw Sugar Moisture Conditioner

Since we have shampoo and a leave-in mask covered, we also had to add in a hydrating conditioner for you to use afterwards. This moisturizing conditioner comes highly recommended because of its healthy ingredients like almond milk, coconut, and agave — all of which are great for your hair health!

Target

OGX Renewing Argan Oil

I've traditionally always leaned away from oils, because oily is usually the opposite of what you want your hair to be, right? But that's actually wrong!. If you have frizzy or damaged hair, you want to make sure you're keeping it hydrated by using an oil like argan oil, which has many benefits. In fact, Healthlineexplained that there are up to 12 benefits of argan oil for your hair and even your skin. This is definitely a key ingredient all-around!

Target

Camille Rose Curly-Hair Moisture Milk

This one's for all my curly-haired gals struggling with frizz or damage! You're going to want to add this amazing product to your cart, because it is seriously well-loved — and for good reason! It's a cream made with macadamia nut, vanilla, and rice milk which are incredibly nourishing to, reduces frizz, and helps to counteract some of the damage, while also preventing it in the future! Def a 10/10 produc — AND it's under $15!

Target

It's a 10 Conditioner

I will be singing this product's praises until the day I die. I've been using it since I was little and my mom did my hair for me — that's how deep my love runs for this conditioner. It smells amazing, leaves your hair silky smooth, and gets rid of any frizz I'm dealing with. Genuinely an all-time fave of mine!

Target

John Freida Frizz Ease

Now that we've covered all the daily essentials, let's cover a great handbag essential. Does anyone else constantly get flyaways or frizz the minute they step out of the house? Well, this creme should stay in your handbag for just that reason! It's great for fixing those pesky flyaways on the go. So no more poofy hair and baby hairs flying in the wind!

Target

Eva NYC Therapy Mask

Go to therapy or buy the Eva NYC Therapy Mask... well, lucky for you, you don't have to choose! This mask has over 16,000 reviews raving over how good it is, and it's only $16, so it won't break the bank — which we love! This product will give you stronger hair in no time. Plus, it's vegan, clean, and gluten free!

Target

Nexxus Anti-Humidity Spray

Lastly, we're going to lock in that frizz, and make sure it's going nowhere with this anti humidity spray from Nexxus. I trust this brand completely, having used a ton of their products before, which have really changed the game for my hair. So, I know this product must be as good as Target says it is!

With fall in full swing, it's safe to say you may have already taken trips to a local pumpkin patch or made your way to a haunted house (or two) for Halloween. However, if you're looking for a perfect quaint fall getaway, then add Lake Geneva to the top of your list! Located in Wisconsin, Lake Geneva — not to be confused with the similarly named Swiss body of water — is a gorgeous midwest town located right next to the stunning, sprawling Geneva Lake. You'll find numerous hotels, local restaurants, boutique and shops throughout the city, offering up plenty to do.

Not sure where to start? Luckily for you, I took a trip to Lake Geneva last month, and I've rounded up a quick guide for where (and what) you'll want to check out during your visit.

PS: If you can't make it this fall, just imagine the winter wonderland you'll find this winter, or the summer oasis you'll savor all summer!

Where To stay In Lake Geneva

Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

There are so many hotels to stay at in Lake Geneva, but there are definitely a few that really standout properties you should consider during your visit!

You'll find standard rooms and suites alongside a plethora of dining options and amenities to utilize during your stay including an indoor and outdoor pool, golf courses, a fitness center, a spa, and an on-site trolley. Plus, the resort has packages for the fall available where you can receive free rounds of golf during your stay on The Brute or The Highlands courses. Might I suggest sending the boys on a golfing spree while you and the girls savor the spa? 😉

Maxwell Mansion

Maxwell Mansion

Book lovers, this one's for you! The Maxwell Mansion is a boutique hotel that's two blocks away from Geneva Lake. The historic mansion has 28 rooms, some of which are inspired by historic figures such Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte, Louisa May Alcott, Jane Austen, General Grant, and Virginia Woolf. You'll also find a hidden speakeasy that's open to resort guests, and it's definitely worth checking out if you have some free time. Otherwise, you can find an indoor bar or grab a drink at the seasonally open tiki bar by the pool!

Warning: This hotel is adults only, so it's best suited for a romantic getaway or a girls' trip!

The Abbey Resort

The Abbey Resort

For a more full-service experience, The Abbey Resort is a great option for families and solo travelers. Aside from spacious rooms, the property has indoor and outdoor pools, live music, an entertainment center, and a 35,000 square-foot spa. The Avani spa is absolutely a highlight at this property, too — you can book a massage, manicure, pedicure, hair and makeup services depending on what you're interested in. Outside of all that, the resort is simply stunning, making it an even better spot to enjoy the fall foliage and take some totally Instagram-worthy photos.
