Not to worry – here’s how to cut costs on your next summer vacay so you can enjoy the perks of cheap travel without the money guilt. Bon voyage!

Lodging

Stay For Free

There are a few ways you can score a free place to stay as long as you are flexible with where you want to go. I recently did a home exchange a la The Holiday that was fantastic and free! My exchange partner stayed in my home in Sonoma, CA, and I stayed in their Brentwood home in LA for Thanksgiving (a holiday week no less). Try sites like HomeExchange.com for domestic and international swaps or score a free guest room or sofa at Couchsurfing or BeWelcome.com.

Work For Your Stay

This is actual fun work if you’re into it. Become a pet or house sitter at Trusted Housesitters. Or better, become an organic farmer! WWOFF connects you with international organic farmers seeking a helping hand. In exchange, you get cheap travel lodging and a pretty cool experience on your travels. You can also apply to be asummer au pair if you're traveling solo, like kids, and can take the time off.

Stay Longer

As more workers maintain remote status, the post-pandemic trend is to rent a 30-day spot for sometimes cheaper than you would a weekly spot. And now Airbnb is featuringSplit Stays where you can travel, say all summer, with multiple locations during your stay.

Stay in A Hostel

Stay for as cheap as $10 a night at hostels around the world. Some offer private rooms or you can opt into communal spaces for a lower cost. Check out sites like Hostels or HostelBookers.

Camp Out

Enjoy the great outdoors via campsites (or glampsites). Check out Campspace and Hipcamp, which lets you camp on cool private properties.

Look For Free Lodging Perks

Try booking a hotel with perks like free continental breakfast, happy hours, mini kitchens or laundry service so you can cut costs on eating out and/ortravel lighter (no baggage checking fees!).

Getting There

Air Travel

Accrue miles via credit card (check out The Points Guy’s Credit Card Tips and Travel Hacks) for free airline flights. Use the card to shop groceries and every day expenses you’d spend anyway to build mileage (and pay off each month to avoid interest).

Try apps like Hopper, which allows you to set alerts for destinations and predicts if prices will change, letting you know whether to “Wait” or “Buy Now.” Google Flights and Kayak can send you different price alerts for your potential destinations and websites Priceline or Expedia will scour the internet for the best travel deals. You can also sign up for Scott's Cheap Flights to get an email digest of the most affordable flights from your location — so as long as you can be spontaneous about booking, you can potentially score a super affordable deal.

On the Road

Connect with other drivers who have extra seats and are heading your way via BlaBlaCar. You can also rent a car from locals via Turo for cheaper than a traditional car rental place. Outdoorsy connects you with RV, camper van, and travel trailers for your next roadside adventure.

Attractions + Food

Photo by Pauline Loroy on Unsplash

Wherever you’re going, visit the local Visitors’ Center for discounts off attractions, especially if you’re a student, teacher, or under 26. Schedule your trip around free museum days, free outdoor events and festivals, and other attractions. If you plan to take in a lot of sights, pick up a city tourism card, which might offer you discounted or free access to the major attractions and museums, as well as a free ride on public transit.

Look at taking buses around too, which can be a fun local experience and a great way to take in the town on the cheap. Connect with locals viaAirbnb Experiencesfor affordable and unique local activities, or dine in at Eatwith, where locals will invite you over for a homemade meal. Visiting the local grocery store is an attraction in itself and can save you a ton on eating out. Local candy and nonperishables make great not-too-spendy souvenirs and travel gifts!

Got friends in cool places? Reach out to them about swaps, short stays, free/cheap things to do too. Find a way to get away that is good for your soul and your pocket. Enjoy!

No matter what kind of day you're having, Marissa Cooper's having a worse one. Mischa Barton's The O.C. character went through the ringer during the first three seasons of the teen drama (remember how she overdosed in Tijuana...and also saw her parents post-hookup after their divorce?).

And during her time on The O.C., Mischa Barton struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. She was arrested for a DUI in 2007 and eventually received involuntary psychiatric hospitalization in 2009 after allegedly threatening to end her own life. And in a new interview, Peter Gallagher (who played Sandy Cohen on the show) says he's "just so grateful" for "the fact that she’s still alive."

  • Mischa Barton starred alongside Peter Gallagher in The O.C. from 2003-2006.
  • The actress has revealed the "trauma" of being a star at that point in her life.
  • Peter recently opened up about how he's thankful "she’s still alive."

The O.C. follows Ryan Atwood, who moves in with the Cohens after getting kicked out of his mom's house, and starts a relationship with Marissa shortly after. While Peter Gallagher played Adam Brody's TV dad instead of Mischa's, Sandy was a definitely father figure for Marissa, and it seems like Peter felt that same responsibility off camera.

"I’ve always felt very protective of her," Peter told The Independent. "First fame is toxic. First fame can kill you. She was 16 years old when she started working with us, so just the fact that she’s still alive, I’m just so grateful."

“You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life,” Mischa said in a 2023 interview with The Sunday Times. “There’s just a certain amount of trauma [from] all that I went through, particularly in my early twenties, that just doesn’t go away overnight.”

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed that season 1 overdose not only served as a cliffhanger, but gave “network executives an escape hatch on a performer they had been wary about” (via People). But Mischa Barton got her big break, becoming "how people knew the show," and (thankfully) Marissa recovered — only to die after a car crash in season 3.

As hard as that season 3 ending is to watch, Mischa did have the opportunity to watch it with Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke for the first time on their rewatch podcast. "It needed to be a thing, after everything she's been through, but if it's here I'll watch it with you," Mischa says.

"I couldn't do it, Mischa, I couldn't do it," Rachel adds. "But I'm going to do it if you're going to do it."

Mischa says even though being written off the show "was a little bit of a bummer," it wasn't necessarily a surprise. "The character was just doing too much," she told Vanity Fairin 2023. "And I think they ran out of places for her to go. It was not the best thing in the world, [but] there wasn’t much you could do at that point. It was whether she could sail off into the sunset, or die. At that point, I guess it’s better to have the more dramatic ending.”

Nashville, TN

Drew Hays

Historically, Music City has been mostly known for one thing (music), but in the last few years, the city has been attracting artists of all genres, from chefs to musicians, helping to bolster the city’s reputation as a trendy, must-visit destination. Whether you’re looking to make some sweet music or you’re after another creative endeavor, Nashville’s growing arts and makers scene is hitting all the right notes. Step back in time at Union Station Hotel, a train-station-turned-hotel. The architecture of the early 1900s Romanesque building, the primo location (within walking distance of The Gulch and other nightlife hot spots) and the newly updated modern-meets-historic rooms make this one of the city’s swankiest spots to crash. Enjoy some Southern BBQ at Shotgun Willie’s in East Nashville (top it off with some bourbon banana pudding), shop vintage at the Old Made Good (OMG), which repurposes antiques and thrift-store finds into something extra special; and catch live music at the Bluebird Cafe, where artists like Taylor Swift and Faith Hill had their career-defining moments.

Miami, FL

Jason Briscoe

Miami is a perfect getaway with girlfriends seeking sunshine and nightlife. The award-winning Eden Roc Miami Beach is a solid, oceanfront stay with bright, spacious rooms and multiple pools. The resort is located in Mid Beach so you’re close to all the South Beach buzz, but also far enough to catch a break in a more relaxing environment. For brunch with a side of pool party, book a table at Strawberry Moon, where brunch is served Friday through Sunday in an gorgeous setting. This particular stretch of Miami Beach is the most popular amongst tourists (less so with locals) so you might have some crowds, but it’s worth it to experience quintessential Miami. For a more local experience, head a bit north and pull up your chair at Haulover Beach. Come dinnertime, Española Way is one of the best streets in South Beach. Strolling up and down this pedestrians-only, European-style street, you could easily forget you’re in Miami. Pop into Tropezón for Spanish tapas and creative gin cocktails in an Andalusian-inspired space, then continue the night at M2 or LIV for megaclub vibes, and don’t be surprised if you bump into celebrities at the latter.

Newport, RI

Raul De Los Santos

This seaside town in Rhode Island is home to Gilded Age mansions and some of the best beaches along the east coast. Only one hour from Boston and three hours from New York City (without traffic), Newport is accessible via train or bus from either East Coast capital. Go island hopping to the coves of Jamestown and the diminutive Goat Island, and enjoy the view from the fields of Hammersmith Farm (Jackie Kennedy’s summer home). Another must-do for any first-time traveler to Newport is the Cliff Walk, a walking trail that winds along the coast from First Beach (and the mansions on Bellevue) to the sandy shores of Ocean Drive. When it comes to Newport nightlife, there’s one spot that’s the center of it all: Clarke Cooke House, a three-story bar that includes a midlevel for open-air cocktails, a raw bar, and live music, while the basement plays host to an underground nightclub. For food: Flo’s Clam Shack, next to First Beach, is iconic for its quahogs and fried seafood and Newport Creamery is a local go-to for ice cream. Also, a sunset sail is sure to appeal to rosé aficionados.

Canyon Ranch, CA

Canyon Ranch

Secluded within 16 acres of majestic redwoods in Northern California is the all-inclusive Canyon Ranch Woodside. There are additional locations in Tucson, Lenox (outside of Boston), and Las Vegas. If you find forest bathing appealing, this is the ideal wellness getaway for you. Stay in one of 24 luxe treehouse rooms that peek through the forest, to ropes courses and guided meditations that take place under the magnificent canopy. Locally sourced dining menus are served al fresco or in a cozy dining room and include afternoon tapas, colorful salads, and fresh salmon. Each day, Canyon Ranch offers dozens of mind-body activities including hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, dancing, and free-flow abstract painting. Arches National Park, Utah

Wouter de Jong

More than 2,000 natural stone arches make Arches National Park a special place in Utah. Travelers from around the world come to see the rare colored formations and brilliant sunsets that light up the sky each night. Hikers and rock climbers will love the endless options for exploring, while more low-key visitors are sure to dig the camping (don’t miss Devil’s Garden!), photo ops and ranger-led nature walks. Bring a bike or car to see as much of the 18-mile scenic road as you can or to journey to the nearby Canyonlands National Park or Dead Horse Point State Park. If you don’t want to stay inside one of the national parks, plan to book a hotel or Airbnb in Moab — it’s just four miles away and has tasty restaurants and some seriously cool shops.

After, chill with a customized spa treatment at one of the many spas, like the Solace at the Big Sky Resort, or go for a soak in the Bozeman Hot Springs. Check out Bozeman for delicious food and drink, like wood-fired pizzas at Blackbird and wine at Plonk.

Chicago

Aveedibya Dey

Chicago has one of the best city vibes that blends Midwestern friendliness with big-city sophistication. Take in scenic river walks and hop on an architecture river cruise to get a lay of the land. Shop the Magnificent Mile, Wicker Park’s trendy boutiques and Fulton Market. Art lovers will fawn over The Art Institute of Chicago, and Second City comedy shows make for a fun night out. Don’t miss the deep dish Chicago pizza at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria and inventive cocktails at The Aviary before you wrap up your weekend!

Santa Fe, NM

Shutterstock

B+C founder Brit Morin recently hosted a girls trip to Santa Fe, and it was the perfect weekend for her creative friends. They started the trip with a photography class at Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and explored the city behind the lens. They stayed at the Inn of the Five Graces — think maximalist style and comfort with a Santa Fe twist. Ofc, you cannot visit Santa Fe without a stop at the Georgia O’Keefe’s Home at Ghost Ranch. Some of Brit's personal highlights: Soaking in the Japanese-inspired tubs at Ten Thousand Waves spa and shooting cowboy photos at Mortenson’s Ranch where celebs like Tom Hanks have filmed movies. "We packed in quite an adventure taking in the art, color, food and natural beauty of the city, all while upping our Instagram game. I cannot wait to go back," she said.

Sonoma, CA

Sonoma County Tourism | Bartholomew Estate Winery

My favorite place to live is also my favorite place for people to come visit! Sonoma is Napa Valley's charming cousin, but a little more laid back with walk-in wineries and delicious eateries that don't require a months-in-advance reservation. The Lodge at Sonoma is one of my favorite spa experiences with private warm pool and sauna area, plus cozy private reading areas before you get your treatment. MacArthur Hotel is another favorite with their outdoor restaurant Layla, that is stunning in design and perfect for a leisurely lunch. The Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa is another must on my visitor list — cozy outdoor firepits are perfect for grabbing a bite to eat and a glass of wine (Friday nights they have live music and food trucks in the summer). All of the above can be a bit pricey for an overnight but you can definitely take advantage of their amenities without an overnight stay. Take a bike ride along the Sonoma bike path, which cuts straight to the town square for shopping and eating (Sunflower Caffe has a darling garden in the back) and Valley Bar and Bottle offers inventive California cuisine that's sourced locally and so delicious in an outdoor setting. The bike path leads to two Sonoma wineries — Bartholomew Estate Winery, where you can do a short hike into the oak grove of the winery or grab a bottle and a picnic table in the park and California's first winery, Buena Vista Winery, built in 1857. Cheers!

Former Disney Channel star Dylan Sprouse and model Barbara Palvin are certainly living the sweet life after tying the knot in Palvin's native Hungary. The couple, who have been together for nearly five years, have always been pretty low-key — except for the occasional and undeniably adorable Instagram post (and a stunning wedding!). We are simply ~obsessed~ with this celebrity couple, especially after they pulled out all the stops for their couple's Halloween costume. Keep scrolling to see some of their best moments :').

See Dylan Sprouse & Barbara Palvin's Halloween Couple's Costume!

For Halloween Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin stunned as the Phantom and Christine from Phantom of the Opera. Dylan wore a mask and a black cape, while Barbara wore a beautiful white dress. While the costume is obviously a nod to the musical, it also totally reminds us of their day as bride and groom.

"In Sleep He Sang to Me," Barbara said in a post, quoting the musical's titular number. "@dylansprouse my forever Phantom."

Who did Dylan Sprouse marry?

www.instagram.com

On the couple's wedding day (July 15, 2023), Barbara wore a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown to celebrate her Hungarian nuptials, bringing together their nearest and dearest for an intimate(-ish) celebration. Barbara and Dylan tied the knot on her parent's property, which conveniently doubles as an event venue, with plans to host an larger wedding in California in the fall.

"This past weekend was supposed to be an intimate event, but we ended up having 115 guests in the end because there are a lot of people we care about, and we wanted them all to be there," Barbara told Vogue.

When did Dylan Sprouse and Barbara Palvin get engaged?

Barbara Palvin on Instagram: "♥️"

After months of speculation surrounding the couple's engagement, Dylan and Barbara confirmed their engagement in conversation with Sprouse's twin brother, actor Cole Sprouse, for V Magazine in June, sharing that they got engaged last September.

"We didn't necessarily feel the need to be fully transparent with the public about that aspect of our engagement," Dylan said. "What we wanted to do with Stephen [Gan, V editor-in-chief] and the V team is make something that was kind of tongue-in-cheek about the nature of private versus public. We're playing with the idea of perception."

Barbara noted that the lovebirds wanted to announce the news "on our time," adding, "When some people leaked the information that we got engaged, our PR team was like, 'Hey, so you guys should do maybe a post about it or talk to this magazine or talk to that magazine…' That really annoyed me because I knew we were building this story up. So, I'm very happy that we ended up doing it our way."

According to People, the couple met back in 2017 after a party when the Suite Life On Deck star slid into the model’s DMs (and as they say, the rest is history). The duo made their relationship Instagram official back in 2018 with Barbara’s sweet birthday tribute for Dylan’s 26th birthday.

Let’s be real here for a second though, we all knew they were endgame the minute Dylan went above and beyond to support Barbara at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show that same year (remember this viral video?). Three days after the fashion show, the Hungarian model told Vogue Australia that she hadn’t had a boyfriend in six years, but had now found “the perfect guy” in Dylan (we aren’t crying, you are).

2017's The Beguiled gave us one of the best groups of people of all time: Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Sofia Coppola, and Kirsten Dunst just to name a few. And we're finally getting an Elle and Nicole reunion thanks to Apple TV+! "THRILLED to bring @rufithorpe genius hysterical heart-wrenching heartwarming book to your TV screens alongside a dream group of people!" Elle says on Instagram. Rather than having to test the success of its pilot, the series has already been ordered — even though the book it's based on isn't even out yet! Here's everything you need to know about the series.

  • Dakota and Elle Fanning will produce the upcoming Apple TV+ show Margo's Got Money Troubles.
  • The series follows Margo, who signs up for OnlyFans after learning she's pregnant.
  • The cast includes Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Nick Offerman.
