25 Things To Get Rid Of From Your Closet — According To A "Purge Queen"

closet organizingcloset organizing

In my friend group, I'm the go-to person for design advice, the minimalist, and the purge queen. Having a clutter-free home has allowed me to easily host guests and live more peacefully. Clutter stresses me out, so decluttering is my version of Xanax. Whether it's dropping donations off at thrift stores and online marketplaces, or passing things along to friends, I'm always finding ways to clear out what I don’t need. And it feels amazing. I also love knowing that someone else can extend the use of what I buy. Ready for a good closet clean out purge?

Here are 25 things you should get rid of from your closet.

First, here’s how I tackle a good purge:

  • Start with small wins: Decluttering an entire space can feel overwhelming, so begin with a single drawer, shelf, or space like your closet.
  • Declutter as you go: I keep designated baskets for items I need to donate, sell, or pass along — whether it’s clothes my daughter has outgrown or batteries that need recycling. It’s an ongoing system that makes unloading pretty easy.
  • Be intentional about storage: Try not to store things you don't need or really want. If it doesn’t fit in your space or serve a real purpose, consider giving it away or selling it.
  • Let go of the guilt: Maybe it was expensive or a gift, but keeping things out of obligation only adds to the stress. Release it with gratitude, knowing someone else can appreciate it more.
  • Make extra cash: The best thing about decluttering? You can turn clutter into cash by selling items that are just gathering dust in your space — someone else might actually need them!

1. Anything that doesn’t fit or look good on you

It's widely reported that women typically wear 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time. The same goes for decor, books, and even kitchenware. If you don’t regularly use it, it’s time to let it go. If your clothes are too tight or too loose and can't be repaired, it's time to give them away, donate or sell on marketplaces like ThredUp or Poshmark.

2. Clothes with stains or holes

You can promise to remove stains or stitch up holes for years. If you haven’t already crossed these to-dos off your list, it's time to make room in your closet without them in your life.

3. Trendy pieces you regret buying

Fall victim to fads? We've been there. It's time to lose anything from trends past because even if they return, it will be an elevated version from what you have right now in your closet.

4. Shoes that hurt your feet

No matter how cute they are, shoes that pinch or flip off should definitely be on your Go pile.

5. “Just in case” outfits

I've held onto this black dress for years that I wore to a funeral — just in case I ever needed it again. Thankfully, I never did. But at some point, it turned into a weird superstition: if I gave it away, I'd be inviting another funeral. So I kept it. Now? It doesn’t even fit me anymore. Time to let it go.

6. Duplicates of the same item

Sometimes, you really don’t need five identical white tees. I have a soft spot for cream sweaters — cardigans, crewnecks, vests, you name it. But now, I’ve set a rule: no new additions unless I part with an old favorite first.

7. Clothes that don’t match your current style

If you wouldn't pin it today on your fashion board, then it needs to go.

8. Special occasion dresses you’ll never rewear

I have this red dress that I wore for a Queen of Hearts costume. I held on to it thinking I might do it again, but in reality I always like to think of new creative costumes. Been there, done that, gone!

9. Business suits from a past job or career

Blazer styles change every year and interviews are becoming less formal in many industries. Maybe you work from home now and don't always need to suit up. Time to ditch that old business suit and donate it to orgs like Dress for Success, which gives donated business attire to unemployed and underemployed women.

10. Vacation clothes that only made sense in one place

An old boyfriend convinced me to buy a poncho while traveling in Chile. That poncho never saw the light of day once I returned home.

11. Bridesmaid dresses that aren't versatile

The likelihood of you wearing that traditional bridesmaid or wedding dress again is zilch. Try to sell it or donate it to places like Brides Across America for military brides or Brides for Cause, which donates proceeds to women-focused charities.

12. Freebies from events or work swag

It was fun getting a freebie in the moment, but do you still want to be wearing that 2019 conference tee to bed? Time to toss!

13. Old college hoodies or T-shirts you never wear

Say good-bye to your old college days by upgrading your hoodie and t-shirt collection if it's been a while.

14. Gifts that aren’t your style

It’s okay to let bad gifts go. There is someone out there who will love them in the way they should be loved.

15. Clothes from a past relationship

You've moved on, his old t-shirt that reminds you of him probably should too.

16. Stretched-out leggings or see-through workout gear
17. Bras with worn-out straps or underwire poking through
18. Socks with holes or missing pairs
19. Pilling sweaters that have faded and/or lost their shape

20. Handbags you never use
21. Belts that don’t fit or go with anything
22. Jewelry that’s tarnished or broken
23. Scarves you never reach for
24. Hats that aren’t your vibe anymore

25. Wire hangers, dry cleaner bags, and old shopping bags taking up space

If you want a closet that inspires you to get dressed each morning, keeping it clean and organized is key. Wire hangers tend to bend under weight, so consider donating them to your dry cleaner. As for those plastic garment bags, repurpose them to protect surfaces during DIY projects before tossing them. And instead of letting old shopping bags pile up, stash them in your kitchen or car so they’re always handy when you need them. Here are home storage ideas to keep clothes and accessories tidy too!

When I think of spring desserts, I immediately think of banana pudding. When I think of summer desserts, there’s no question that ice cream is the go-to. To help bridge the gap between this current spring and the coming summer season, Trader Joe’s just stocked their freezers with a treat that really delivers the best of both dessert worlds: Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream! And yes, I am freaking out about it!

More shoppers like me are clearly feeling the same way about Trader Joe's limited-time Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream – a few fans on social media shared they’re buying 6 pints at a time after "waiting all year.” This is definitely one of those TJ’s finds you’ll want to hunt down ASAP!

Scroll on for more about Trader Joe's seasonal Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream that just hit stores!

Trader Joe's

Sold by the pint, Trader Joe’s Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream is reminiscent of, well, actual banana pudding. It’s flavored with banana purée and immaculately accented not only with swirls of salted caramel, but bits of the signature vanilla wafer cookies you find in the OG dessert.

Trader Joe's

Trader Joe’s fan @traderjoestalia shared the returning ice cream flavor with their Instagram followers, and a handful of shoppers sounded off with excitement:

“The banana pudding ice cream ALWAYS gives me life,” one person commented.

“I have been waiting all year,” another said.

@traderjoestalia

Reddit also lit up after the Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream made its official comeback to Trader Joe’s. This thread asking for fans’ opinions on the new pint detailed the ice cream’s exact flavor and was fairly mixed in terms of reception.

Some people noted that the seasonal flavor “tastes like artificial bananas and nothing else” and has a “chemical aftertaste,” while others said it only has a “tiny bit of an artificial banana flavor, but nothing to be mad at.” Several users compared it to banana-flavored Laffy Taffy!

“Omg! I am so happy it is back! It is so delicious!!” one Redditor said. “I add fresh banana and strawberry slices. I can't wait to get some more!”

“I LOVE Banana anything and it's just so tasty. The one issue is that I eat it too fast,” another person said. “I just bought a container yesterday and it's already gone."

“Us southern folk down here recognize Blue Bell as the grand champion of banana pudding ice cream,” someone else commented. “However, I am willing to test this one....for science purposes & whatnot.”

Reddit

In my humble (and very dessert-loving) opinion, Trader Joe’s Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream is a must-try if you love ice cream of any kind. It boasts the perfect lineup of flavors for summertime, so it’s bound to be refreshing.

Reddit

One pint currently goes for $3.79 at TJ’s, but it’s only available for a limited time. I can’t wait to snag a few pints for myself to use for homemade ice cream sandwiches, affogatos (especially stoked on that one amid all the banana latte buzz), and simply shoveling spoonful after spoonful straight into my mouth!

The best thing I've invested in since being a renter is a movable and affordable clothing rack. I'm one of those people who refuses to measure things only to act surprised when something is bigger than I thought (i.e., the sectional sofa in my living room). Since I'm slowly learning my lesson about what's feasible and makes sense in an apartment, I'm happy to share how much the Sywhitta Clothing Rack on Wheels has changed my laundry routine and then some.

In case you need a little weekend shopping inspo, be sure to add this Amazon clothing rack to your cart for quick shipping!

Image via Jasmine Williams

Prior to buying this clothing rack, I had a larger one that featured three shelves and matched my former office's aesthetic. Unfortunately, it was damaged when we moved to our current apartment, so I took it as a sign that I needed to downsize.

After doing a ton of research on Amazon, I came across my current clothing rack — a simple, yet aesthetically-pleasing design that would match my white and gold desk perfectly!

Besides that, this clothing rack makes it 10x easier for me to wash clothes because I'm able to truly see what I want to wear for the next week or so. If you would've taken a look at my closet before I decided to find this more organized solution, you honestly would've screamed. There were clothes, shoes, and accessories covering every inch of it...to the point I'd often get overwhelmed by own my stuff. That used to make laundry day a pain in the butt, but I've put that behind me with this clothing rack!

But aside from the aesthetic, more obvious functionality, and the price (let's be real), the cute little features are truly what sold me on it more than anything. Let's get into the features and how they help me truly keep it together during laundry day.

My Favorite Features on Amazon Clothing Rack

Image via Jasmine Williams

Side Hooks

My hat obsession is real, so the first thing I knew I needed in a clothing rack is an area to store the ones I typically reach for on a routine basis. Though this clothing rack doesn't have built-in shelves on the side, it does feature two hooks that you can hang your lightweight coats, bags, or hats on.

Depending on my mood, I alternate between which of them I'll hang on the hooks. My goal is to never place more than 50 pounds on each hook, so if I have a coat on one side, I'll keep a hat and a bag on the other hook. Organization aside, with these hooks, I don't have to scramble to look for the coat I've been wearing regularly when I can easily see it hanging on the clothing rack.

Though it's under $30, the hooks on the clothing rack are pretty sturdy and haven't popped off in the year I've had it.

Sturdiness level: 5 out of 5

Image via Jasmine Williams

Two Anti-Slip Beads

My former clothing rack didn't have anti-slip beads ,so I'm going to be 100% honest when I say this: I don't think they really help me minimize the chaos of laundry day. They're nice if you're afraid your clothes are going to slide up and down your clothing rack, but I don't feel like they do anything that's groundbreaking.

Rating: 2 out of 5

Image via Jasmine Williams

Bottom Shelf

This clothing rack only has one shelf, so I use it to home the heels I tend to wear the most. I actually have a separate shoe rack that stores my sneakers and sandals, but it was mandatary to have something with a bit of extra storage — I can't help it that Carrie Bradshaw taught me how to love a shoe! Jokes aside, I'd say that the wire port of the bottom shelf isn't as sturdy as what I'm used to, but it's ability to hold platform heels upright and well definitely says a lot.

Before I actually started placing my overflow of shoes here, I used the bottom shelf as a place to store my dirty clothes so I'd know what needed to be washed. I'd fold them so they weren't thrown haphazardly in my laundry basket so I could see what was being washed in case I wanted to do an outfit repeat (no judgement!).

Rating: 4 out of 5

Amazon

Sywhitta Clothing Rack on Wheels

Overall, I think this is a great clothing rack that budget and space-friendly! It's not going to give you all the features that a more expensive one will, but don't count it out! It'll help you keep track of your favorite clothes and accessories while making laundry day less chaotic.

A century ago, nurseries were filled with baby names that now feel very vintage, but according to the so-called "100-year rule," these monikers are ripe for a revival.

The phenomenon says that names tend to cycle back into popularity once they've had enough time to fade from common use. So, as modern parents try to find more unique name choices for their little ones, the forgotten gems of the roaring '20s may start making a comeback.

Here are some of the most popular baby name picks from the 1920s that deserve a second chance to shine in 2025.

Scroll to see all the 1920s baby names we love for 2025!

1. Raymond

Alina Paduchak

Raymond is a strong name of Old French and Old German origin that means "counsel protection" or "hand of advice," symbolizing wisdom and guidance.

It evolved from the medieval "Raimund" and "Raginmund" into its familiar anglicized form. Then, it became the 15th most popular boy name in the United States during the 1920s, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Today, Raymond still feels distinguished yet warm and approachable.

2. Gladys

Photography Maghradze PH

If you're searching for a name that blends vintage charm with regal flair, you can't go wrong with Gladys. Welsh in origin, it derives from "Gwladus" or "Gwladys," meaning "princess" or "ruler."

In the 1920s, it was even the 31st most popular girl's name, gracing a total of 72,561 little ones. While it's become relatively rare today, Gladys has an undeniable elegance that would help your newest addition stand out.

3. Ralph

Carlos Santiago

Ralph became the 25th most common boy's name in the 1920s, perhaps because of its unexpected edge.

Scandinavian in origin, this name actually means "wolf counsel." It was introduced to England before the Middle Ages and later evolved into the French "Raulf" after the Norman Conquest. Ralph has a rich history and rugged strength that make it fit for a future leader.

4. Betty

Tatiana Syrikova

As a diminutive of Elizabeth, Betty means "oath of God" and is bursting with both strength and sweetness. That's why it reigned as the 4th most popular girl's name of the roaring '20s. Plus, this moniker was donned by icons like actress Betty White and First Lady Betty Ford.

Despite once being considered a go-to, Betty has become quite rare, so it's a great option for those who want a classic and lively name for their baby girl.

5. Ernest

Becerra Govea Photo

With German roots, Ernest means "serious" and "vigorous," reflecting a young boy with a steadfast and determined nature. It's most famously associated with Ernest Hemingway, and during the 1920s, it was the 29th most popular name, being given to 53,653 babies.

Ernest has a classic sound, meaningful origins, and the adorable nickname possibility of "Ernie," which makes it primed for a return among modern parents.

6. Doris

Emma Pender Photography

Doris is Greek in origin, meaning "gift," and is linked to the sea nymph Doris in Greek mythology. Moreover, this name traces back to the Dorian people, an ancient Greek tribe.

Back in the 1920s, Doris ranked as the 8th most popular girl's name, thanks in part to Hollywood star Doris Day. Some might say that, with its soft sound and connection to the ocean, this pick is ready to make waves again.

7. Walter

Foden Nguyen

Derived from the Old High German "Walthari," Walter means "commander of the army," and any boy with this moniker is destined to be a strong leader.

Walter was the 16th most popular boy's name of the 1920s, being given to 119,810 babies over the decade. With its old-world charm and heroic meaning, this choice stands the test of time.

8. Ruth

casper somia

Lastly, Ruth has Hebrew roots, meaning "friend," and biblical significance since it was the name of King David's great-grandmother. As one of the few women in the Bible with a book named after her, Ruth embodies devotion, love, and strength.

Parents during the 1920s seemed to agree as well because Ruth ranked as the 6th most popular name, donned by 218,521 baby girls born that decade.
