Why You Should Think Twice About Collagen Supplements

Collagen supplements are having a major moment thanks to promises of restoring the protein we’ve lost back into our skin, hair, and bones. But do they actually work? Or are they just another Insta-famous beauty product trap that we’ve fallen for?

“Collagen is a family of fibrous proteins that act as the building blocks for skin, bones, teeth, cartilage, tendons and other connective tissues,” says Jessica Weiser, a dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group. Our bodies produce collagen naturally, but it’s not always so plentiful. “Starting in your late 20s and early 30s, production begins to decline resulting in loss of volume, in wrinkles and sagging,” says Shereene Idriss, an NYC-based dermatologist at Union Laser Dermatology. The answer may be in supplements (at least if your feed has anything to say on the matter), but it isn’t as simple as popping a pill or drinking a smoothie. Ahead we help you come to a conclusion.

why SUPPLEMENTS are BENEFICIAL  

Collagen pills and powders are made of fragmented pieces of amino acids and peptides, which, once ingested and in our bloodstreams, connect with collagen-making enzymes to help skin keeps its elasticity and firmness, says NYC-based dermatologist Dendy Engelman . They may also potentially improve skin hydration, joint health, and muscle mass, according to NYC cosmetic dermatologist and founder ofSmarterSkin Dermatology Sejal Shah. Engelman recommends hydrolyzed collagen (often made of animal hides, fish bones, and scales), like the Reserveage Collagen Replenish powder ($20), as it is the simplest form of collagen to ingest because it’s broken down into the smallest forms of peptides and amino acids. Plus, the odorless and tasteless powder makes it easy to be mixed into any beverage. “This product has verisol collagen that is only one of two types of collagen that shows scientific results in two weeks,” she says. Other popular options include Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides ($43), which is naturally sourced from bovine hides, and Neocell Collagen Beauty Builder ($18), which is made of amino acids and hyaluronic acid to strengthen the skin’s elasticity and give the skin volume.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T RUSH INTO COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS

Collagen pills are not regulated by the FDA, which makes some dermatologists wary of their safety. “It is of utmost importance that consumers educate themselves about the source from which the collagen is derived,” says Idriss. “Make sure that the collagen supplements (if you choose to take them) are from free range and antibiotic free protein sources.” In addition, choose a brand that discloses that it tests metal contamination, as heavy metal ingredients can lead to allergic reactions. “The FDA legally doesn’t require supplements to undergo extensive testing and trials; it only requires that these products be labeled as supplements,” says Weiser. “Efficacy is best proven through scientific studies, specifically double-blinded randomized control trials where the supplement is compared head to head with a placebo.” She believes that because this type of rigorous testing isn’t economically worthwhile for the companies, all consumers have is data based on anecdotal stories.

If you’re curious to try them, do your due diligence and research what they’re actually made of — giving preferential treatment to those with fewer ingredients and the addition of a third-party testing certification from NSF, UL, or USP to supplement the fact that it’s not FDA-approved. In the meantime, protect your body’s collagen by wearing sunscreen each and every day to avoid oxidative stress, followed by retinol at night to promote a healthy, plump complexion.

Jason Kelce is taking the news of being an official girl dad like a champ. He told E! Newshe's "got it pretty easy" because "the clothes are all going to be hand-me-downs or already bought." Not only that, but they've already secured a baby crib! However, Jason was quick to add Kylie's also getting ready for their daughter's arrival. "Kylie's definitely preparing more than I am, because she's actually growing the human being."

“I love my kids so much, and especially my daughters,” he added. "I was telling somebody out there because they're expecting their first — and they look at you. They smile at you. There's just a way that kids have to warm your soul in a way that nothing else can.”

He's also excited to watch his daughters grow up with a new sibling. "And hopefully we'll welcome a fourth into this world, and we'll be able to watch them fight and tear each other apart and all the good stuff."

He even appeared on The Rich Eisen Show where he joked, "I'm screwed [in] like in 10 years. The moment they’re all in middle school, I feel like it’s just gonna be chaos." He also hopes Wyatt "can start helping out a little bit more." But, he's still looking forward to it! "I obviously have not had a son, but there is something about a daughter in the way I think as a dad, you feel an extra amount probably of protection and love toward that child," he shared.

What has Kylie said about her fourth pregnancy?

Meanwhile, Kylie just opened up on her new podcast, Not Gonna Lie, about her feelings on her fourth pregnancy. She said, "I am so incredibly grateful to be able to get pregnant, but it is a means to an end. When I tell you that I cannot stand being pregnant, I mean it. I don't have a a fun time."

If that sounds a little uh...negative, it actually makes a lot more sense when she explained more! She elaborated, "I am nauseous for most of my pregnancy. It tapers off a little after the first trimester, but I continue to have nausea throughout my pregnancy." Woof, I know that's tough!

Kyle continued by explaining she hasn't even really had the fun, wacky cravings many pregnant people get — instead she's had more "aversions" in each of her pregnancies. I'll take cravings over aversions any day!

The podcast host then joked, "When you're super pregnant and someone comes up to you and says, 'Isn't this just the most beautiful thing ever? 'I want to punch you in the face. I'm not going to, but I want to."

Definitely wishing her a healthy, less aversion-filled pregnancy this go-around!

OMG, The '1923' Season 2 Release Date Is So Soon

Yellowstone universe fans rejoice! The second season of 1923 is on its way, and not only do we have the first look at the characters, but we FINALLY have the 1923 season 2 release date — and it's way sooner than I expected. Ever since season 1 ended with the Duttons scattered (and Spencer and Alex split up), I haven't been able to stop thinking about how and when they'll reunite (PLEASE let it be sooner rather than later!!!) And the new 1923 season 2 teaser trailer proves they aren't going down without a fight...literally.

The '1923' season 2 teaser trailer proves we're in for more drama.

Probably the most important piece of news from the 1923 season 2 teaser is that it tells us new episodes are coming to Paramount+ February 23! We also see all our favorite Dutton family members, and I'm simply grateful. Jacob and Cara Dutton (Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren) hold down the fort at the Yellowstone ranch in Montana, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) fights to get back to them (I mean "fighting" quite literally based on his bloody nose and a quick clip of what looks like a boxing).

Elsewhere, Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) is still stuck on the transatlantic sea voyage with only the return address on Cara's letters to guide her, Jack (Darren Mann) protects both the ranch and his wife Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), and Teonna (Aminah Nieves) is still on the move to get to safety. Maybe she'll have a run-in with the Duttons of her own — I just know that Jacob and Cara would take her in!

'1923' season 2 is going to be "absolutely incredible," according to Brandon Sklenar.

It Ends With Us star Brandon Sklenar has been vocal about how amazing season 2 is going to be. “I can confidently say that it’s going to be absolutely incredible,” Brandon tells Forbes. “The tone shifts a lot and it’s definitely a bit darker. It’s very beautiful.” Okay I'm not really sure how season 2 could be darker than season 1 (and TBH, that makes me a little nervous), but more than anything, I'm just excited to dig in. Based on how quickly I devoured season 1, I can't wait to see what else creator Taylor Sheridan has up his sleeve.

And just like me, Julia is hoping for a happy reunion between Spencer and Alex! “I would love for Alex to make it to the ranch and meet the family,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I hope we get to see some of her own strength come out now that she’s on her own. I want to meet the Dutton women. I think that that would be a lot of fun — and Teonna, we all want to meet Teonna.” GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT PARAMOUNT!
