Hey, You’re Probably Wearing Your Shapewear Wrong

Whether you’re aiming to smooth out, perk up, or whittle down, there are now more options than ever to sculpt your look. Unfortunately, that also means there are more than a few ways it can go wrong. From rolling down to riding up, the foundation-piece fails are plentiful and can make you shy away from shapewear altogether. To ensure your undergarment experience is nothing short of excellent, we turned to Madelyn Ulrich, Senior Designer at Yummie, for guidance. Ahead, common mistakes and ways to avoid them to make shapewear your best friend instead of your worst enemy.

1. Your shapewear’s rolling down. “Make sure you’re in the correct size,” says Ulrich. “Shapewear should smooth out your lumps and bumps — not make new ones! If you’re in a size that is too small, you could be creating more problems than you’re solving. Getting your proper size is very important. Just because you are a medium bottom does not necessarily mean you’ll need a medium in shapewear. Try things on.” Brit + Co Pick: Jockey Skimmies Cooling Slipshort ($24)

2. Your bra is riding up. “Fit is incredibly important when finding your go-to bra. You would be very surprised to learn how many women don’t know their actual bra size, ” Ulrich says. “If your bra band is riding up in the back, it’s too big. The first and most obvious step is to get measured. Just keep in mind that some sizes vary by store, but should be consistent across the board.” Brit + Co Pick: Soma Vanishing Back Full Coverage Lace Trim ($58)

3. Your tights are making your feet slip in your boots. “The best hosiery pieces are ones that provide a solution,” Ulrich notes. “I like (Yummie’s) opaque tights with hidden cushion foot. This means I don’t have to wear an additional sock with my booties — it’s comfortable and I don’t have to put two layers on my feet.” Brit + Co Pick: Yummie Opaque Tights with Hidden Cushion (Tall Boot Length) ($32)

4. You have VPL. According to Ulrich, “As we know, high waist pants and shorts are very much on trend right now, and if you want to wear shapewear under them, you can get that awful VPL. Look for options out there that are seamless and still hold you in.” Brit + Co Pick: Spanx Women’s Everyday Shaping Panties Brief ($22)

Parade always keeps the hot stuff comin’, and this time around, it’s a collection made in collaboration with Scandi fashion brand, GANNI. More recently focused on bringing colorful, contemporary ready-to-wear pieces to the historically minimalistic Scandinavian style, the Denmark-founded brand surely doesn’t shy away from boldness in this new edit. I’m not going to lie – I was hesitant to try period underwear for the first time. How could they not leak? It truly didn’t make sense for me at first, but after testing them out I can confidently say that I am a changed woman. This is one modern invention I can get on board with, and hopefully I can convince you to forgo constantly changing pads or tampons in favor of this (IMO) far simpler option.

Before I jump into the best brands, though, let’s go over the basics. You’re probably wondering:

Wouldn’t period underwear smell?

Period underwear, like pads or tampons, do smell over time. As long as you change them according to your flow, then you’ll be all set.

How does the fabric in period underwear actually catch blood?

The moisture-wicking fabric is made up of thousands of small filaments, all of which trap blood and other liquid and contribute to its “leak-proof” title.

How do I wash period underwear?

When it comes to washing, you can machine wash your period underwear in cold water on a delicate cycle. While you can wash with other items, I prefer not to.

My 5 Top Period Underwear Brands

1. Cora ($30)

These are by far the most comfortable period undies I’ve worn. If I’m being honest I have been using Cora products long before I tried their underwear, but even so these are a game changer.

2. Unders by Proof (starting at $25)

Unders has a style for everyone. Whether you prefer a thong, need a seamless style or rock granny panties (same, BTW), you’ll find the perfect option for you. Oh, and they are super comfortable, too.

3. Knix (starting at $24)

I love all of the seamless options Knix provides. If you’re looking for cute styles and even cuter colors, definitely give these ones a go.

4. Lola ($30)

Even though Cora and Unders are my go-tos, I still enjoyed Lola’s Washable Period Underwear. If you’re on the hunt for a practical, comfortable pair of underwear, Lola is definitely worth the try.

5. Saalt (starting at $27)

Known for their menstrual cups, Saalt recently came out with a variety of undies for any level of flow. Personally, I don’t love the stretch (I want to feel like nothing is moving LOL), they’re still a great leak-proof choice.

There you have it! The five best period undies on the market. Don’t be mistaken – the price is definitely worth the functionality, so give these a go and let me know what you think!

Trader Joe’s is the premier destination if you’re eating a high-protein diet – you just have to know where to look and what products to shop for! Luckily, as a self-proclaimed protein aficionado, I have a handful of easy hacks that allow you to maximize your protein intake. I eat each of these at least once a week and can verify they’re extremely simple and so tasty.

From breakfastto dinner (and, of course, snack time!), you’ll definitely want to whip up these Trader Joe’s protein hacks if you’re trying to up your intake.

Scroll on for 5 Trader Joe’s hacks that’ll help you reach your protein goals with ease!

BP / PEXELS

1. Add cottage cheese to scrambled eggs.

This is one of my favorite things to do if I'm craving a savory breakfast – especially one that’ll fill me up! Adding a heaping scoop of Trader Joe's cottage cheese to your scrambled eggs (just mix it in with the eggs before cookin’ them) not only ups the protein content in each bite, but it makes the eggs super fluffy and never dry.

Trader Joe's

2. Use Trader Joe’s high-protein tofu instead of regular tofu.

Did you know that TJ’s carries a special kind of high-protein tofu? As opposed to the regular variety that has around 9 grams of protein per serving, this pack is loaded with 14 grams of protein per serving! It’s perfect to use for stir fries, tofu scrambles, and tofu fries with an extra boost.

Trader Joe's

3. Add Trader Joe’s protein granola to Greek yogurt bowls.

Trader Joe’s also sells a delicious high-protein granola – and it’s insanely good. I like to top my Greek yogurt bowls with it for breakfast, though you could easily use it as a cereal or just snack on it dry. The Peanut Butter Protein Granola has a whopping 11 grams of protein per serving – the only drawback here is that people with a peanut allergy can’t enjoy it.

Polina Tankilevitch / PEXELS

4. Add protein powder to your morning oatmeal.

Trader Joe’s doesn’t carry a name-brand protein powder, though the Orgain variety is typically always on shelves when I shop there. The tub they have is actually smaller than most other protein powders you can find elsewhere, too, which is highly agreeable with my lifestyle since I live alone – and don’t wish to spend $30 on protein every time.

Anywho, I love using this protein powder to ramp up the protein content in oatmeal bowls and smoothies alike. Two scoops delivers 21 grams of organic, plant-based protein that tastes oh-so yummy.

Trader Joe's

5. Stock up on TJ’s underrated protein snacks for an easy (yet satisfying) bite.

If you don’t have the time (or simply the energy) to whip up a high-protein snack, Trader Joe’s actually has plenty of bites to offer. Here are some of my favorites to always keep stocked:
