Confused About Gender Fluidity? It’s More Common Than You Might Realize

The first time many of us heard the term ‘gender fluid’ was with the rise of Australian actor Ruby Rose and her breakthrough US performance on season three of Orange Is the New Black. With her androgynous character, Stella, people became curious about the star, and in 2015 Rose told Elle she was gender fluid, preferring feminine pronouns (she/her).

Rose has explained she doesn’t consider herself a man or a woman, but that she enjoys playing with her physical appearance on any given day. Pop star Miley Cyrus feels the same way, telling UK media personality Lorainne in 2017 that she feels like she’s not really a ‘girl.’

“I ask him [fiancé Liam Hemsworth] sometimes, ‘Do you like being a boy?’” she said in the interview. “‘And he’s like, ‘I don’t really think about it.’ And that’s crazy to me, because I think about being a girl all the time. I’m always like, ‘It’s weird that I’m a girl, because I just don’t feel like a girl, and I don’t feel like a boy. I just feel like nothing.’”

In her TEDx Talk, “Beyond the Gender Binary,” Dr. Margaret Nichols, the Executive Director of the Institute for Personal Growth, says that in a few years, everyone will know a transgender child or person.

“What’s happening is that the culture has changed,” she says in the talk. “And the culture has changed so much that…transgender people are feeling comfortable coming out at younger and younger ages.”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/embed/4MUIYlaWVUk?feature=oembed&wmode=transparent expand=1]

But is someone who is gender fluid trans?

“To understand gender fluidity, you have to understand the concept of the “gender spectrum” or “gender continuum,” Nichols tells Brit + Co in an interview. “Although we are used to thinking of gender as a binary — males and females — the truth is more complex, even in cisgendered people. For example, a cisfemale actually has some cells in her body with XY chromosomes. A cismale has some XX cells.”

“While most people are comfortable assigning themselves to one of two boxes, gender fluid people consider themselves neither, or both,” Nichols continues. “Some gender fluid [folks] consider themselves ‘in between’ while others feel that some days they are more ‘boylike’ and other days more ‘girllike.’ The gender fluid child on the reboot of Roseanne is a good example: he does not consider himself transgender, but some days he wants to wear pants and other days skirts. Gender fluid people vary in their gender expression, not their gender identity.”

So, it’s less about what gender you may or may not feel, but more about how you express yourself within cultural gender norms rooted in specific gender binaries. And while we may expect certain behaviors from men and women, western gender ideals are changing, softening our ideas on fluidity and what it means to be a man or woman.

“In all Western countries, acceptance of varied gender expression has increased, especially in the last 20 years,” Nichols explains. “In the 1980’s, for example, a little boy wearing dresses would have been labeled mentally ill; in the 21st century, there is a book, My Princess Boy, written about a little boy who wears dresses, and the author (his mom, Cheryl Kilodavis) has a foundation to help encourage free gender expression in schools.”

While this concept may be new to many Westerners, gender fluidity has a long and meaningful history around the world. For centuries, Hijras have been a visible part of South East Asian cultures. The term is one that covers all people who may be eunuchs, intersex, trans, gender queer, gender fluid and nonbinary, mostly living in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. There is even evidence that Hijra have been active in Indian culture since the time of theKama Sutra over two thousand years ago.

In 2014, Hijra were given official third gender status in India, removing much of the modern stigma associated with the gender non-conforming members of this group of people. The law followed Nepal and Pakistan in making the third gender option available on all government documents for the world’s second-largest population. While the term is still negative among many in India, Hijra are reclaiming their status after British colonizers passed a law in 1897 making eunuchs (and other Hijra) criminals.

Throughout history, and around the world, gender variations have been accepted (and sometimes highly regarded), and colonialism is at least partly to blame. As scholars have pointed out, gender restrictions were historically used in part as a tool by colonizers to control the populations they were taking over. Nevertheless, gender fluidity has quietly thrived for centuries.

Navajo people believe in four distinct genders (male, female and those that have transitioned from one to the other), and the Mojave people offered ceremonies into adulthood outside gender binaries for children who did not fit into cultural traditional male or female roles. Many indigenous populations continue to recognize “two-spirit,” a third gender that fits outside the male/female binary.

In 2016, The Guardian declared Millennials “the gender fluid generation,” citing their own loose study of how young people today define their gender. With nearly 1,000 respondents from 65 countries, The Guardian found that the gender binary is becoming less important to young people growing up today, and as Dr. Nichols suggests, gender fluidity, like other forms of gender expression, is something we shouldn’t even worry about.

“There is really nothing threatening here,” she explains. “Most gender fluid people simply want to express themselves freely. Gender fluid people make life more varied, interesting and colorful.” And, she says, at the end of the day, many of us express ourselves more fluidly than we might even imagine.

“I think most people, if they are honest, can see a little gender fluidity within themselves. Gender fluid people are just a little more extreme than the rest of us.”

Black Friday will be here before you know it, with thousands of retailers flaunting their best deals of the year. We're shoppers at heart, so you know we're already scoping out 2024's offerings! Given that the list of stores and brands hosting Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year is essentially endless, we're weeding out only the best deals from the places you love to spend (and save). From beauty faves like Dieux and Kiehl's to home goods from Amazon and Walmart, these are the Black Friday deals you simply can't miss.

What is Black Friday?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving that typically signifies the start of holiday shopping season, though many retailers have started to launch their Black Friday deals earlier year over year. A lot of the deals that stores and brands offer during Black Friday outpace their other sales events (such as Memorial Day and Labor Day) in terms of savings.

When is Black Friday 2024?

Gustavo Fring / PEXELS

Black Friday will land on November 29, 2024.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cottonbro Studio / PEXELS

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving that highlights savings and deals online as opposed to in-store offers. It's one of the busiest times of year for online shopping.

When is Cyber Monday 2024?

Anna Shvets / PEXELS

Cyber Monday will land on December 2, 2024.

When's the best time to shop for holiday gifts?

Vlada Karpovich / PEXELS

We're big believers that it's never too early to start shopping for holiday gifts. The sooner you shop, the better, so you can check everyone off your list ahead of the busy holiday season and have some peace of mind once the real festivities start! Plus, if you're shopping online, starting early gives you ample time to wait for items to be shipped and delivered to your door. If deals and savings are what you're looking for, Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer some really great opportunities.

What's the best thing to shop for during Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Kaboompics / PEXELS

The best thing to shop for during Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday promotions really depends on what your needs are as well as the items you're scoping out to treat yourself (or the people you're gifting for the holidays). Typically, big-ticket items like home appliances, tech products like earbuds, laptops, TVs, and tablets, and luxury self-care tools are heavily discounted during this time.

Romance reality TV is probably one of the best sectors of the entertainment universe, at least if you ask us. We love our Bachelor nation binge watches and live for our daily Love Island recaps. Watching people fall in love is so, so cute…and more often than not these relationships spill out of our screens and into the real world, where we’re able to keep up with all of our favorite reality stars à la social media. Such is the case for Gabby Windey — former Bachelor contestant and half of The Bachelorette’s starring Season 19 duo — who *just* came out as queer and revealed that she’s been dating comedian and writer Robby Hoffman for three months. Please excuse us while we squeal in excitement for her!

www.youtube.com

Former 'Bachelorette' Gabby Windey Reveals She's Dating A Woman | The View

On Wednesday, Gabby appeared on The View to share a mysterious update about her dating life. “I have been seeing someone for a couple months,” she said. “And I’ve been keeping it a little private because it is a bigger story and a bigger conversation. Because I’m dating a girl.” She continued, explaining to the speechless (and rather stiff) hosts that her queerness “was always a whisper in me that just got louder and louder” and she “had to navigate through the shame” she’d internalized before coming out. “I don’t want to live and not be living my full truth,” she commented.

Following her announcement, Gabby shared a series of pictures to Instagram with her big news, featuring her girlfriend Robby. “Told you I’m a girls girl!!” she humorously captioned the post. She went on to share an adorable video of her running up to Robby and kissing her post-The View, and it’s safe to say we’re ecstatic for her.

Image via Instagram

Robby also shared her own pictures of Gabby to Instagram, tagging her in the comments.

Gabby was a finalist on Clayton Echard’s season of The Bachelor in 2022. She proceeded to co-star in her own season of The Bachelorette alongside Rachel Recchia, getting engaged to Erich Schwer last May after meeting him on her season. Gabby and Erich called off their engagement last November, and she seems to have started seeing Robby a few months later.

We should note that Gabby isn’t the first Bachelor Nation contestant to come out as queer, either. Becca Tilley, who was casted in Seasons 19 and 20 of The Bachelor has been dating pop singer Hayley Kiyoko for five years, sharing her sexuality with the world in 2022. Colton Underwood, another lead in the franchise, also came out as gay in 2021, not to the surprise of comedian and actor Billy Eichner (IYKYK).

The Bachelor franchise has historically been solely focused on heterosexual relationships, only deviating from the norm in Australia. In 2021, The BacheloretteAustralia lead Brooke Blurton became the first openly bisexual lead in the franchise, hosting both men and women in the Bachelor Mansion.

TBH, we’d love to see more representation in The Bachelor franchise. Love is love — and we want to see it all on our screens!

Major spoilers for the last two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4!!

Only Murders in the Building season 4 has finally unmasked its killer...and it's the one character I never suspected. After last week's reveal that Marshall was Sazz's stunt protégé, stole her script for theOnly Murders movie, and is behind her death as well as Glen's, the Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale opens with Marshall holding Mabel captive — and somehow it only gets crazier from there.

  • In the Only Murders season 4 finale, Charles and Oliver have to rescue Mabel from Marshall.
  • Marshall was Sazz's stunt protégé, then stole Sazz's script and passed it off as his own.
  • The Only Murders in the Building season 4 ending kills off a beloved character.

The 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4 Ending, Explained

Patrick Harbron/Disney

After learning Marshall is the killer they've been looking for, Charles is determined to save Mabel, especially since he didn't get to save Sazz. Realizing Marshall has scaled the apartment building in the past, Charles and Oliver wind up on the building's ledge so they can get to her window. And just like the rest of the season, Martin Short absolutely steals the show. One of my favorite lines is, "Charles, you're my ride or die. And my strong preference is to ride." Icon!!

Our favorite comedy duo jumps into Mabel's apartment and starts to fend Marshall off with Eva Longoria's Lady Longoria-19 in 1 Multi-Tool, but it doesn't take long for him to gain the upper hand. Right when he's about to kill the trio, they're saved by Jan of all people, who shoots him in the back from the empty apartment across the courtyard...then reveals she's been hiding in Charles' apartment since we last saw her. (Feel free to take a deep breath to help process that information. I did.)

Patrick Harbron/Disney

With the threat taken care of, Mabel, Oliver, and Charles return to the Only Murders in the Building movie set — which Mabel says now has "mercifully low" cringe levels. Seeing Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis in their element, and our podcast trio getting to honor Sazz's memory is such a well-earned moment for the season. We also get to see the first page of Sazz's script (which features her monologue from the beginning of the episode), on which she says, "When you take your hero on a journey, get him in all kinds of trouble, but land him home safely? Nothing better than that." It looks like our leads have finally landed safely!

The Only Murders in the Building ending features Oliver and Loretta finally getting married before she leaves to film in New Zealand, and Charles and Mabel joining Oliver at the altar. Loretta's walked down the aisle by her son Dickie and Oliver's son Will, which made me WEEPY. Considering Martin Short as Oliver is one of my favorite casting choices of the 21st Century, I am just so happy to see him happy.

Patrick Harbron/Disney

But, like all the seasons before, the finale takes a turn when Sofia Caccimelio tries to hire the trio to find her husband Nicky, a Caputo crime family member who episode 9 tells us is missing. They deny her request, but considering actress Téa Leoni just joined season 5, it looks like she won't be taking no for an answer.

And in the final moments of the Only Murders in the Building season 4 ending, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver finds Lester dead in the fountain! Lester is such a kind and comforting presence in every episode, I can't believe it! (How could you Hulu, HOW COULD YOU?!).

Who's the killer in season 4 of Only Murders in the Building?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

The Only Murders in the Building season 4 killer is Marshall P. Pope (whose real name is Rex Bailey), supposed screenwriter on the Only Murders movie. He reveals that his dreams of being a writer were always being squashed, and that Sazz was the first person who was ever kind to him.

But when Sazz shows him the only copy of her Only Murders movie, and he realizes just how good it is, he decides to take things into his own hands. He sends the script to Bev Melon at Paramount, and it ends up getting greenlit immediately (which explains why Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are contacted about the movie so abruptly).

When Sazz finds out, she confronts him and says she's going to tell Charles about the stolen script after his Broadway debut. Desperate and suffering a bit of a meltdown, Rex flies to New York and kills her, then puts her body in the incinerator.

Where can I watch Only Murders in the Building?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

All episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4 are available to stream on Hulu!

This Mad Hatter costume is pretty easy to replicate. Grab a brown jacket from your closet, orange wig and top hat. The thread holster is made by stringing thread spools onto yarn and draping it over the shoulder. The makeup is an understated version inspired by the original, but really easy to recreate. And yes, those are fake eyelashes as eyebrows!
