The Coquette Aesthetic Is All The Way Frilly, Feminine, And Flirty

coquette aesthetic fashion

Pink, sparkles, bows, frills, florals – all the dainty elements that graciously intertwine to create the coquette aesthetic. TBH, we’re running out of fingers to count the amount of “-cores” and hyper-specific fashion aesthetics that come from social media, but the coquette aesthetic is one we’re glad to embrace.

“Coquette” by definition describes a flirty woman — think Mia Thermopolis learning the art of the fan — and it’s evident this trend takes that idea and runs with it. Inspired by the Japanese “Lolita” fashion subculture, it’s all about indulging in and flaunting blushing pinks, hyper-feminine florals, and sparkly silk ribbons. Basically any gentle, yet opulent piece can transform your look into the coquette aesthetic. So submerge yourself in the soft, romantic, and lush styles of coquette with these picks!

Tops

Klassy Turtleneck Peek-A-Boo Long Sleve Brami ($48)

The flirty cutout is giving all the coquette feels, while the sleeves can still keep you warm and cozy. The top is padded — so you can go braless — scoring bonus style (and flirty) points in our book.

High Rack Studios Daisy Lace Shirt ($92)

Floral lace designs are a coquette staple. This top pairs perfectly with a mini skirt, highlighting a softer aesthetic even more.

Free People Night Rhythm Printed Bodysuit in Ivory Combo ($58)

Embrace more delicate details with this hyper-femme, corset-esque bodysuit in a light floral pattern. To go even girlier, pair this top with a silk maxi skirt.

Resurrection Sweet Cherry Pie Cardigan Sweater ($45)

Flaunt a flirty look that's as sweet as pie with this cherry-adorned cardigan. The coquette girl loves to be soft and cozy, so this sweater is sure to keep you comfortable. Wear over a slip dress for an effortless outfit.

Rat Boi Ballet Bolero in Petal ($48)

Balletcore is coquette’s aesthetic cousin, and these bolero sleeves are perfect for both styles. The pale pink ballerina top is the perfect addition to any look.

Splendid Elettra Top ($148)

Puffed sleeves and a fitted waistline add a princess-like look to your coquette outfit. This top pairs perfectly with any flowy bottoms you prefer.

Future Collective with Gabriella Karefa-Johnson Long Sleeve Smocked Bodice Top ($30)

The square neckline makes us want to run through the French countryside and profess our love to a brooding admirer. While that may not be a (realistic) option, you’ll definitely get romantic vibes from this dreamy top.

H&M Lace-Trimmed Ribbed Tank Top ($13)

Lace trims and eyelet fabrics are so in for the coquette aesthetic. Wear a dainty tank like this one under some bolero sleeves or a light cardigan, and you've nailed the look!

Light pink hues are a coquette staple, so this bodysuit from Parade is a perfect addition to your cart! I mean, it’s literally called “Cupid,” in all it’s girly, flirty glory.

For Love And Lemons Rhoda Blouse ($159)

Adorn yourself in romantic florals and pinks with this whimsical top. The neckline and puffed sleeves will make you feel like a total coquette princess.

High Rack Studios Peggy Backless Top ($68)

Get a dash of dreaminess with this eyelet tank. And if you’re really feeling fancy, add the matching shorts as well!

& Other Stories Cropped Floral Embroidery Shirt ($99)

This embroidered top is for the polished coquette girl. The light blue shade and highly detailed lace collar are super easy to style while still standing out in a crowd.

When it comes to coquette, the more pinks and frills the better. But the aesthetic goes beyond just fashion: the coquette girl embraces a slow, gentle lifestyle, full of lush self-care nights, afternoon tea parties, and spending plenty of time with the girls.

Skirts and Bottoms

The transparent fabrics in this skirt feel like they were draped on by a forest nymph. Pair with a basic white baby tee for an easy look!

Selkie The Queen Bee Romance Novella ($325)

The ruffles lying along this dress' neckline accentuate your collarbones for a fully feminine look. Plus, the bow-tied straps gently sit on your shoulders like the cherry on top of a coquette cake.

Sister Jane Sadie Collared Babydoll Mini Dress ($115)

This dress lets you go big with an oversized collar, while staying gentle and subdued with a tiered babydoll silhouette.

Petal + Pup Azelia Dress in Blue Floral ($69)

While the slit gives sexy, the porcelain-like floral patterns give coquette — a delicate, but effective balance. Put a pearl-encrusted headband on to top off this adorable look.

Sweetheart necklines are exactly what they say they are — so sweet. This feminine feature alongside silks and sheer fabrics are iconically coquette.

Shoes

Dolce Vita Kanika Pearl Heels ($135)

Instead of clutching your pearls, put them on your feet. The heels on this pearly pair of Dolce Vitas definitely create a dreamy look, adding style and shine to any coquette creation.

Franco Sarto Capri 3 Clog Sandal ($140)

Pastels pair perfectly with a frilly white mini dress in the spring. And when they’re comfy clogs, too? Talk about dreamy.

Intentionally Blank Mika Platform Mary Jane in Green Tea ($199)

J. Crew Zoe Ballet Flats in Romance Pink ($80)

You already know we love a balletcore-coquette crossover moment, and these flats from J. Crew are no exception. They’re literally called “Romance Pink,” so we don’t think it could be better suited for the coquette girl.

Steve Madden Nylo Mary Jane Pump ($70)

Again, the Mary Jane style is the ideal shoe design for the coquette aesthetic because it's hyper-feminine and comfortable to wear.

Accessories

In less than 6 months, I experienced two devastating events that forced me to gauge my relationship with self care. Tough conversations with my inner circle made me aware that I needed to embrace my "soft girl era", but I didn't know where to start. On certain parts of TikTok, it looked like I needed to surround myself with new home decor or beauty buys, while other people implied it's about living a life that's free of stress.

To cut out the noise, I took a break from social media so I could ask myself what I need to thrive. This resulted in me making a temporary decision about my fertility journey, slowly axing out foods that disrupt my hormones, and choosing things that make me feel at peace in my mind, body, and soul.

Uncover 11 ways having a "soft girl era" can help transform your self-care!

1. It Can Help You Examine Your Relationship With Social Media & The News

Ketut Subiyanto/Pexels

Do you have a healthy relationship with social media and the news, or have you been doom scrolling? I'll be the first to say I've had to set strict limits for myself because it's been too easy to stay glued to gossip sites and what's happening in the world. While it's always great to be informed, there is a such thing as information overload that can affect us mentally and emotionally.

Make an effort to find activities to occupy your time sans scrolling endlessly on Instagram, TikTok, or other news platforms.

2. It Allows You To Be Honest With Yourself If You're An Overthinker

Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels

Have you been allowing overthinking to make you feel stressed? If so, you should try writing down or repeating a few phrases to help you calm down. They're such a big help if you have anxiety because they remind you that you can be present in the moment instead of existing solely in your head.

3. It Opens You Up To Asking For Help

Ron Lach/Pexels

This should be in all caps, but I don't want you to think I'm yelling at you. It's just, I know what it's like to be hyper-independent while embodying the traits of a "strong woman." But, there's some things you can't #GirlBoss or #LuckyGirlSyndrome your way out, and it can be devastating if you don't like asking for help maneuvering a tough event.

I'm still processing an emergency situation I was in after what was supposed to be a routine doctor's visit, so I've been out of my element whenever I lean on my family and friends for emotional support. I usually like to deal with sad or scary situations by myself, but not all things are meant to be shouldered by ourselves.

What I can tell you is that asking for help and receiving it makes life a little more peaceful because there's no extra burden of hurting while trying to portray a role society claims it loves.

4. You'll Become Comfortable Journaling Your Thoughts

Tonette Whitted/Dupe

I sound like a broken record, but I feel strongly about journaling your thoughts. It's a way of processing things that have happened and how you feel about them. Also, it can be a place where you create lists of goals, books you want to read, hobbies you want to try, and more!

5. You'll Give Yourself Permission To Rest

Cora Pursley/Dupe

If you can, push the pause button on being available to everyone for a couple of days. Even if you're an extrovert, it never hurts to occasionally stay in bed and do nothing. Take it from someone who has a hard time resting: you're not "lazy" if you're not always going somewhere or talking to someone.

It's completely fine to reset your mind, body, and soul.

6. You'll Begin To Do Nice Things For Yourself

Abigal Westlin/Dupe

Buying myself flowers is one of my favorite things to do in my soft girl era. Instead of waiting for a man to surprise me with a bouquet outside of Valentine's Day, I regularly adorn my home with tulips or sunflowers. They bring a touch of beauty and greenery to my space which helps on WFH days that feel challenging.

7. It's A Great Way To Rediscover Your Love Of Reading

Daniela Lara/Dupe

Can you think of the one book that makes you laugh, smile, and cry tears of joy? If so, that's the book you'll want to keep near your nightstand. It'll help you break up with your dependence on screen time while also giving you a chance to let your imagination fly. The added bonus is that you'll fall back in love with reading!

8. You'll Genuinely Find Ways To Nourish Your Body.

Payton Butler/Dupe

Being a soft girl isn't just about looking good or reaching for fun things, it's also about nourishing your body with healthy meals. Sometimes we eat and drink things that our digestive system doesn't like, so I'm recommending that you make small changes to your meals.

You can create your own Mediterranean bowl à la Cava or aim to eat more fruits and veggies during the week. Whatever you choose, just remember to start small!

9. You May Even Adopt A Sober Lifestyle

Sivan Weitz/Dupe

Whether you know it or not, there's great joy in grabbing a non-alcoholic beverage with your bestie in the city. You can catch up about life, share your dreams or whatever's troubling you, and sip the greenest beverage that beats the idea of eating green eggs and ham. That's right — I'm talking about matcha.

Is it the pretty green hue we can't stop staring at or does it really taste that good? Let's compromise and say it's both!

10. Solo Activities Won't Feel Daunting

Thyra Morton/Dupe

You don't have to be the next Frida Kahlo to enjoy a paint class! I personally like to engage in coloring or painting because it helps me find something else to focus on. Though it seems simple, the art of having a fun hobby you're not trying to perfect or gain profit from sparks your inner kid's joy.

11. The Beach Will Actually Feel Relaxing For Once

Sash Gabriel/Dupe

You deserve a mini vacation that includes putting beach towel down on hot sand near the ocean so you can read your newest TBR pick. It's soothing feeling the sun on your skin while a gentle breeze blows which is why I recommend everyone try to experience it a few times per month.

Fashion is like a time capsule that reflects the cultural, social, and artistic influences of each era. But for every timeless classic that we've gotten from decades past, there are also plenty of missteps that left us scratching our heads.

From strangely small hats to paisley prints and peplum tops, each decade has had its fair share of fashion fails. Whether you suffered through these trends or just want to cringe, get ready to laugh at some of history's most questionable style choices.

Scroll to see the outdated & absolute worst trends of every decade...

1. 1920s: Cloche Hats

The Vermont Country Store

Cloche hats were all the rage in the 1920s, but they were never the most flattering accessory for anyone. They were bell-shaped, fit snugly over your head, and often covered your eyebrows. So, wearers wound up looking more like swaddled babies in a bonnet.

Not to mention, this style was typically paired with shorter bob hairstyles and had a way of swallowing up the face, almost like a swim cap. You can still get this more old-fashioned style from The Vermont Country Store, or you can try a more modern take from Anthropologie...if you dare!

2. 1930s: Beach Dresses

Etsy

While itty-bitty bikinis are a common sight at beaches today, women took a more modest approach to swimwear during the 1930s. There's nothing wrong with leaving some things up to the imagination, either, but beach dresses took the trend too far.

Typically adorned with ruffles and other decorative details, these garments were supposed to make you look chic as you lounged seaside. But they were really just impractical since, obviously, sand, water, and layers of fabric don't exactly mix well.

3. 1940s: Mini Bowler Hats

Amazon

More than 80 years later, we're still confused about the rise of miniature bowler hats. These tiny pieces were perched awkwardly on wearers' heads and looked more like props from a costume party or play.

Mini bowler hats were simply too small to be practical yet too formal to be fun. And honestly, they were flat-out unflattering for most people.

4. 1950s: Poodle Skirts

Amazon

Along with sock hops came poodle skirts, another fashion faux pas. These oversized, felt circle skirts feature applique poodles or other kitschy designs and were a hit with teenagers.

They were twirl-friendly, making them great for dancing, but the overly literal embellishments were more childish than anything. The silhouette might work for some outfits today, but the poodles can stay in the past.

5. 1960s: Paisley Print

Ann Taylor

It's no secret that 1960s fashion embraced bold, psychedelic patterns. Regardless, paisley print (like this dress), especially in loud and clashing colors, was one of the cringier choices.

The swirling designs were just overwhelming and made wearers look more like dated wallpaper. Plus, when people paired paisley dresses, tops, or pants with equally loud accessories, the result was visual chaos.

6. 1970s: Sweater Vests

Macy's

We can thank the 1970s for groovy trends like tie-dye and bell bottoms, but sweater vests were more baffling. They weren't warm enough to be functional or stylish enough to be a statement piece.

So, these sleeveless knits toed an awkward line between preppy and pointless. Today, they've sort of made a comeback in baggier, more chic variations. But the classic fitted sweater vest can stay in the '70s.

7. 1980s: Sweatbands & Leg Warmers

Free People

In 2025, most people hit the gym in typical leggings or shorts with an oversized T-shirt or tank top. Back in the 1980s, workout classes looked more like overstimulating neon fashion shows.

Sweatbands and leg warmers are probably the worst offenders. They were meant to add flair to workout gear but were more about aesthetics than functionality.

Sure, a sweatband might be helpful, but leg warmers? Unless gyms in the '80s were equipped with crazy powerful air conditioning, it's hard to imagine anyone's calves were getting cold.

8. 1990s: Parachute Pants

Free People

Parachute pants were made from shiny, swishy nylon that, shocker, was the same material used for actual parachutes. These baggy bottoms typically came in neon colors or wild patterns, making them anything but subtle.

Aside from nylon not being very breathable, the style of parachute pants was just too loud and didn't really flatter silhouettes.

9. 2000s: Trucker Hats

ASOS

During the 2000s, trucker hats with air-brushed fronts and mesh backs somehow became a must-have accessory.

Brands like Ed Hardy and Von Dutch really popularized this look among teens and young adults, who paired them with low-rise jeans or graphic tees. While they helped complete the ultimate Y2K aesthetic at the time, trucker hats have been replaced with more neutral baseball caps.

10. 2010s: Peplum Tops

Nordstrom

Finally, peplum tops (like this striped one) are one of the most perplexing trends of the 2010s. They featured flared, ruffled hems that shot out from the waist and added more volume as opposed to defining someone's figure.

If you were a teen or college student during this regrettable era, you probably showed up to class or even parties wearing these tops. In hindsight, they weren't fun, flirty, or flattering.

We finally know who The White Lotus killer is — and who didn't make it out of their vacation alive. We spent all of last week thinking about the possibility of who'd survive the White Lotus season finaleon April 6, and while some of our theories were proven correct (cough cough the poison fruit!!!), there are more than a few moments that shocked us. Keep reading for Mike White's The White Lotus season 3 finale recap!

Here's the only White Lotus finale summary & ending explainer you need.

'The White Lotus' season finale is as wild as you'd expect.

Stefano Delia/HBO

White Lotus season 3, episode 8, "Amor Fatie" opens with Rick returning to the White Lotus and reuniting with Chelsea on the beach. Chelsea leaves Saxon behind to run to her BF, and Saxon's longing look has fans in a tizzy because it appears Chelsea (and her self-help books) finally broke through to him and he's craving real connection now...even though he's still haunted by the incestuous encounter with Lochlan. (No, I still can't believe that happened either). The memory is even worse when Lochlan says he only got Saxon involved because he's a people pleaser and basically didn't want Saxon to feel left out. I'm sorry Mike White, WHAT?!

Piper also finally admits that she didn't enjoy staying at the monastery, and that she does actually need her material comforts, evoking two different emotions from her parents: Victoria is happy, Timothy is not. When Lochlan tells his dad he could live without money, the Ratliff family patriarch sets a plan into action, making the family (sans Lochlan) piña coladas with the poison pong pong fruit seeds mixed in.

After the family takes a sip, Timothy comes to his senses and stops them from drinking the rest...but in a twist of events, Lochlan makes a smoothie with the fruit seeds accidentally mixed in and nearly dies by the pool. But don't worry, he wakes up in his dad's arms, and then says he thinks he saw God. As one TikTok user put it, "him not cleaning the blender out is so youngest brother core."

What are people saying about The White Lotus finale?

HBO

Fans are happy with a standout moment from Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate's last dinner at The White Lotus, where Laurie admits how sad she's been the whole vacation. After explaining that work, romance, and even motherhood haven't been able to fill the void she feels, she reveals their friendship is what gives her life meaning.

"Pleases me greatly to hear Carrie Coon got the Meghann Fahy finale moment," @burritoprophet jokes on X, references Meghann Fahy's standout scene from The White Lotus season 2.

"Meghann Fahy's monologue in s2 and Carrie Coon's monologue in s3...Mike White is a f—ing legend," @contaemplative adds.

Meanwhile, Gaitok tells Mook he knows who robbed the hotel boutique, later low-key confronting Valentin, who begs Gaitok not to report the crime. And after Belinda and Zion received $100,000 from Greg in last week's episode (to help Belinda start her own spa business), they actually get him to send $5 million. And Belinda is ready to get out of town. I would be too, TBH.

How does The White Lotus season 3 end?

Fabio Lovino/HBO

But the White Lotus season finale comes to a head when Jim and Sritala Hollinger show up at the resort and Jim antagonizes Rick, saying awful things about his mother. Chelsea tries to stop Rick from retaliating, but when he notices the couple's bodyguards aren't around, he ends up shooting Jim in the chest before learning he was Rick's father.

When the bodyguards and Rick end up in a shootout, Chelsea gets hit by a stray bullet and dies. PAUSE. This is, without a doubt, the saddest part of the whole season for me. Chelsea was literally the one person I wanted to make it out alive, and the look on her face as she dies (along with her tears) seem to show that even though "in the end Rick finally saw her as his soulmate, I can tell she finally saw he wasn’t," according to one TikTok comment, with another comment calling the heartbreaking moment "brutal."

But it doesn't end there. Rick tries to carry her body away but ends up getting shot by Gaitok. Turns out Rick and Chelsea will be together forever after all. Their bodies get taken off the island as Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate comfort each other after the shooting, and the rest of the characters look toward the future.

Belinda and Zion leave the White Lotus on a private boat while the Ratliffs return to North Carolina, with Timothy promising they'll get through future trouble as a family. We didn't get to see the fallout of their financial troubles IRL, but who knows. Maybe this will play into The White Lotus season 4.

Is season 3 of White Lotus over?

Fabio Lovino/HBO

Margo Millet is the daughter of a Hooter's waitress named Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and an ex-wrestler. She's always had to make it on her own, even though she's not sure how. Now at 20 years old, Margo needs an income and fast. She decides to experiment with OnlyFans and ends up taking some of her estranged father's advice from the world of wrestling to create a character users will fall in love with. You can order the book now!
