The Secret To Launching A Successful Podcast

Sari and Lauren Feingold

Twin sisters Sari and Lauren Feingold launched their podcast, Creative Cravings, with one goal in mind: to nourish our creativity. Beyond food, there's also a whole lot of inspiration and conversations about tapping into your creative power. Thanks to our partnership with Office Depot OfficeMax, we are sharing their founder story and how they built a thriving community by bringing creativity and kindness to the table.

B + C: What set you on this podcast journey?

Sari: First of all, thank you so much for this opportunity to share Creative Cravings global podcast, business, brand, and community with Brit + Co. readers, especially on Women's Entrepreneurship Day! This is a dream come true for both of us. A lot of factors actually play into our entrepreneurial journeys and into bringing Creative Cravings podcast to life.

Within the last several years, Lauren and I, individually, realized how much we had loved and lost creatively expressing ourselves. The feeling of consuming others' creations, yet rarely creating anything ourselves, made us feel like we were not living our lives fully. We both had cravings to create and share something nourishing - for ourselves and for others - but we did not know what, and that feeling was eating at us!

Through countless conversations with each other about being multi-passionate, we realized that we do crave the risk/adventure of trying new creative challenges, like podcasting or making new recipes. It feels great to cultivate and share our creative gifts: playing piano + ukulele, storytelling, singing, hosting, writing rhyming poems and song parodies, cooking, baking, painting, dancing, etc. Since all of these creative outlets have positively contributed to our well-being and mental health, we knew that we would be exactly the right "Twin Tastemakers" to co-found a business dedicated to helping others live more fully, too - specifically, by celebrating their journeys of chasing their food cravings, life cravings, and creative cravings. It has been a bumpy road, and after bootstrapping for a few years, we are now crowdfunding so we can create an epic Season 3 in 2022!

B + C: What problem are you solving for your audience?

Lauren: Creative Cravings is a global, cause-driven lifestyle brand, edutainment company, and community for anyone with a craving to live more fully. During the pandemic, so many people turned to creative outlets at home (beyond TikTok, haha!) and they still are. Despite the heaviness of the last couple of years, it's amazing that more people are finally able to prioritize rest and self-care through discovering new, hidden talents. The seed of our mission - helping others to feel both FULL and FULFILLED - stems from us asking: "How can we chase our truest cravings in life as confidently, and joyfully, as we follow our food cravings?"

It's safe to say, our audience values crEATing as a key ingredient for living life to the fullest. They crave food for thought that inspires, entertains, comforts, and fuels them in the kitchen, in their careers, and in life! We are excited to keep creating content, products, and experiences that enhance their well-being.

B + C: What startup challenges have you faced along the way?

Lauren: My mantra is: If it were easy, everyone would do it. The entrepreneurial path has so many peaks and valleys, and one of the most challenging parts is planting seeds way before reaping the benefits. Sari and I wear a lot of hats, and most of the time, we have to roll up our sleeves and figure it out. We could not be more proud of ourselves for creating and sharing something we love that expresses who we are, but we have faced the challenge of "do we give up?" on multiple occasions.

Though podcasting is a $1 billion industry, it majorly reflects the voices of those who already have huge audiences and teams of people working with them on their shows. This leaves talented indie podcasters treading water to keep up, simultaneously looking for a new model to make and raise money for our hard work. Indie podcasters have so much to offer! We don't want to give up. We want to be good examples to other indie podcasters who wonder if they will ever "make it."

B + C: What strategies helped you overcome those challenges?

Lauren: In times of struggle, being open and honest with myself, Sari, and friends in and outside of the industry has made me feel better. Having a good cry does too, not gonna lie. Creative pursuits like singing, playing ukulele, and cooking also pick me up in moments of sadness or frustration. Also, when in doubt, I walk it out at the Chicago lakefront or commit to at least 20 mins of at-home yoga.

Sari: Agreed. I always remind myself that good things happen just one step at a time. Also, staying expansive, thinking big, and creating "blueprints" for future plans helps us to overcome feeling small. We're both dreaming up a lot for Creative Cravings, including in-person creative getaways (think: camp), fun group workshops, a wearable product to help entrepreneurs with anxiety relief, and a cookbook inspired by our Creative Cravings podcast guests, episodes, and even our podCAT, Gracie.

B + C: What would you say are your top 3 successes so far?

Lauren: The most fulfilling success is when you reached out to us to share the things you're loving and learning from our work. Being able to create friendships and memories with our Creative Cravings podcast guests, listeners, clients, and customers is the best part of this entrepreneurial journey.

Sari: Talking with dream podcast guests whose creative work we've supported for years has meant the world to us! We are also grateful to feature family and friends chasing their creative cravings. Some favorite guests include globally renowned dancing violinist Lindsey Stirling, Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy, our Disney-loving-creative-kid-cousin, Ilan, and our mom, Dr. Carole Landman, D.D.S.

Being selected in the Top 30 pitches of Selfmade's Spring 2021 pitch competition is an honor. Also, we have both returned to Selfmade as Mentors for Summer '21 and Fall '21 cohorts. Finally, investing in the Almost 30/Your Podcast Pro competitive accelerator program for podcasters allowed us to find others who relate to our experience as they grow their shows and businesses, too. We also utilized the knowledge gained from the program to land affiliate partnerships and dream brand collaborations/giveaways.

B + C: How have you approached marketing your brand and raising awareness?

Sari: Good question! We honestly view marketing as building real connections with those who align with our values. We are grounded in our intention to create with flavor, i.e. we know our brand ethos is to be inspiring and educational, and to never be boring! So, we are always thinking about how to connect with and serve others through these lenses… case in point: this incredible opportunity right here to meet you, wonderful Brit + Co. reader!

Lauren: In creating a brand that is so personal to us, we know that we are the best marketing "tools" for our show and offers. A few ways we raise awareness are: thinking strategically, frequently showing our support for those we wish to work with, and taking time to ask ourselves: Wouldn't it be fun if…? regarding our creative, thoughtful marketing efforts. So far, we have only used strategies that are organic (no paid ads).

Here are the key ingredients that have helped us to reach our audience of food/fun-loving, creative, go-getters:

  • Creating engaging social content that ties into the podcast and our handmade products: On the podcast, we ask guests, "What phrase would you love to see written on your mug each morning + what are you drinking from it?" This way, we can make that idea a reality for them (and you!) when you purchase a customized hand-painted mug from our shop.
  • Jumping on opportunities to use our creative gifts for good, like selling our signature Cookies for a Cause in support of Bakers Against Racism and selling tickets to a live, virtual Creative Cravings podcast trivia fundraiser that we organized and co-hosted to help people pay medical bills.

  • 5-Star Podcast Reviews - These help other listeners get a feel for all the goodness they will get from our show, before they even press play!
  • For the podcast, we make it easy for guests to share out and share about their episode.
  • Engaging CTAs (calls to action) in episodes - Each episode has an opportunity for you to participate in a creative challenge, suggested by us or our guest. Share your creation visually with us on IG using #creativecravingschallenge. We also create timely specific challenges, like our #bethelightchallenge2021 . We love to re-share your Stories when you tag us!
  • Collaborations: It's great to be podcast guests on other shows that we admire! Podcast swaps are fun and can be helpful cross-promotion.
  • We join other people's communities, events, and programs in order to learn about what others are needing, craving, and creating.
  • We have co-created a public playlist on Spotify called Livin' Life to the Fullest with pump up songs from our podcast guests and listeners.
  • Expressing our own creative cravings through our visual series, Travel Through Your Tastebuds. This global food series was inspired by a recipe we found in Brit + Co over 2 years ago! Can't make this up!

B + C: What was your most valuable takeaway from Selfmade?

Lauren: Selfmade is self-care. Investing (time, energy, money) in your own growth and expansion is worth it. Also, feeling complete permission and accountability to DREAM BIG shifted my state of being, in the best way possible.

Sari: You get out what you put in! On our live Zoom calls, I always thought about how I could help someone else, in addition to getting my questions answered. On that same note, Lauren and I noticed that there was such an appetite among new entrepreneurs for needing help with brand strategy, pitching partnerships, and how to tell your story, so we started coaching and absolutely love the Selfmade clients we get to serve. Now we're both Selfmade Mentors. I'm so grateful to have new friends to check in with and mentors to turn to during the more challenging moments.

B + C: Would you recommend the course and why?

Lauren: Abso-freakin-lutely! Being a part of Selfmade is the epitome of the phrase "Surround yourself with those who refuse to let you fail."

Sari: Selfmade offered everything we were craving, all in one package. There is an abundance of opportunity to make progress and to build smaller support / mastermind groups. We regularly connect with Selfmade friends, revisit calls with Coach Jessica and Coach Emily, and we're thankful to Coach Annie for helping us finesse our new offers. Even after the course ends, you never have to feel alone, because there is always someone who can help you out, no matter if your question is small and detailed or big and visionary.

B + C: How do you complement each other in business?

Sari: We have similar strengths, but we have found a solid strategy for division of labor across all our efforts. Lauren writes notes for our show's "intros and outros," uses our editing software for post-production of episodes, and closely keeps an eye on stats so we can get a sense of where in the world people are tuning in. She also spearheaded our first Cookies for a Cause initiative by ordering supplies / ingredients, calculating shipping costs, and baking and decorating our first test batch. We both collaborate on figuring out the creative podcast episode titles, making Instagram reels, preparing for our guest conversations, co-hosting, brainstorming content for promotion, copywriting, and crafting written / video pitches.

Lauren: Sari took the lead on funding our business and creating our website, including figuring out how to set up our e-commerce mug shop and making it functional!

B + C: What's one piece of advice you would give to female entrepreneurs on the brink of starting?

Lauren: Lead with generosity. Give more than you get.

Sari: Surround yourself (virtually and IRL) with people who are good for your mental health. And, don't expect people to be mind readers - ask for help and support when you need it.

B + C: What's next for Creative Cravings?

Lauren: What's next is... Season 3 of the podcast, once we reach our crowdfunding goal by December 21, 2021.

Sari: Also, for those on our email list, we are offering exclusive opportunities to work with us 2:1 and 1:1 as you bring your creative, entrepreneurial visions to life, so sign up for our Creative Cravings Newsletter after you contribute. Our mug shop is also open for holiday orders :) Cheers!

B + C: What has receiving the Office Depot OfficeMax scholarship to Selfmade done to help you grow your business?

Lauren: This opportunity to connect with other female entrepreneurs and coaches was invaluable because it brought us new podcast listeners and ideal clients. We really appreciate the opportunity to ask and receive answers to about a million questions that were holding us back! This scholarship gave us access to a lifelong community of amazing people to support and supporters for all things Creative Cravings, now and in the future.

B + C: How have Office Depot OfficeMax services/products helped you accomplish more in your business?

Sari: Using our Office Depot OfficeMax Pitch Day gift card, we're looking at a few options to improve our work-from-home space, whether that's adding a standing desk or new chairs to the living room corner that has become our podcast studio.

In our Take 5 series, sponsored by Verizon, we ask women in business about unexpected challenges, their inspirations, recent wins, and how the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program has helped propel their business forward. Here, we meet Therise Edwards, founder/CEO of Teshley Solutions, an education consultancy firm that helps students and families navigate the complexities of the education system K through 12.

What is an unexpected business challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?

I wouldn't call myself a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) expert, but I ended up having to know a lot more about it than I ever anticipated. FAFSA is what administers Pell Grants, which is what a lot of colleges base their financial aid on. I knew about the application changes, and some were excellent, but they made a series of critical errors and a lot of parents were scrambling. It was not my intent to have this as my area of focus; it just became a necessity.

What's a recent small win for your business?

Recent small wins are my collaborations. I formed partnerships with one organization that focuses on students with special needs. I hosted a webinar with the executive director of that organization. I formed a partnership with members from an insurance company on planning and paying for college. That was my first corporate sponsorship. And I've got a series of events coming out because others actually reached out to me. One of them I met through another networking platform, but I got to that platform from one of the sessions that I did with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program.

How did you start to collaborate with external partners?

Just changing my strategies and my approach, and just being more secure and more emphatic in making connections. It ends up being this continual cycle.

Is there a woman in business that you admire or that you look up to?

I have two. Leontyne Anglin, who runs a nonprofit called Beyond Expectations. She works with a small pool of students, but she just gives them enormous exposure and opportunity. She's brilliant with collaborating with individuals and businesses and really bringing the students what they need. And then the other on a bigger scale is Cate Luzio, founder and CEO of Luminary, who taught her Business Plan Bootcamp through the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. She is just a dynamo. She is just so supportive of women entrepreneurs. She's awesome.

How did the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program help propel your business forward?

All of the collaborations and partnerships with the exception of one all came from joining the Verizon Small Business Digital Ready Program. I’ve taken all of the free classes and the one on projections and pricing, something every entrepreneur struggles with, was very helpful. There have been so many of them. Sometimes you're completely ignorant in a category so you take the class and it's like, okay, that's good to have. But then sometimes you sign up for it and it's like, oh, yeah, I did know 90 percent of that, but this other 10 percent is going to be very, very helpful.

However, he's not in a rush and wants everything to happen naturally. All that matters is that the two of them are in each other's life. He said, "I just know that when I look at her, I just say, ‘I don’t know a world where it could be better than this.’ That’s what I always say to her.”

Selena Gomez tells TIME just how much Benny Blanco means to her — no matter what anyone else says. "My own fans, who I adore and feel like have shaped who I am, will say the most hurtful things to me about how I live my life," she says. "But he has the strength in him that none of that noise fazes him. It’s really impressive, and I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon.”

October 27, 2024

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco looked amazing in their Alice in Wonderland couple's Halloween costume. "Curiouser and curiouser," Selena wrote on the post, which is totally reminding us of Taylor Swift's 1989 (hello "Wonderland"!!!).

Selena wore a corset dress in what looks like slate blue with cap puffed sleeves and a tulle skirt, along with a blonde wig, black bow, and slingback shoes. Benny went all out as the Mad Hatter with face paint, a wig, a top hat, and a waistcoat. We'd follow them down the rabbit hole!

November 11, 2024

Benny Blanco's been featured in People's'Sexiest Man Alive' issue and we're kind of feeling it! What started off as an unlikely choice for Selena has turned into a deep understanding of why she loves him so much. The man is an excellent host, cook, and gentleman which makes him an off-the-charts lover. And when it comes to date night, he believes in making sure every time is special. "I [still] go all out for every date. It doesn't mean spending your entire bank account. It means being attentive and listening," he said.

His most memorable dates with Selena involve the times she "rented out a whole botanical garden" and he "got her Taco Bell" before proceeding to make her "movie-theater nachos" and deep-frying her "favorite pickles from Texas" for Valentine's Day.

He also gushed about his favorite time of the day. "I'm a real morning person. It's my favorite time to spend with Sel, because we both wake up really early. It's like our moment before the rest of the world wakes up." Not only that, but the music producer is thrilled he has "a true best friend" he gets to spend his life with.

Major Outer Banks season 4 spoilers ahead!

ICYMI, Outer Banks season 4 dropped its second half on November 7, and fans have a lot of very strong feelings about it. Despite the fact JJ's entire character arc is about defiance, hope, and being the ultimate Pogue, Outer Banks season 4 ended with his biological dad, a kook named Chandler Groff, killing him in cold blood.

It's an absolutely devastating ending for everyone's favorite character, and fans are having a hard time coping with the loss. The fact we only got 10 episodes of JJ and Kiara together (a relationship written into the show after viewers picked up on the chemistry between Rudy Pankow and Madison Bailey) makes it even worse — and a lot of fans are saying they won't watch the show again.

"I can’t even watch the previous seasons anymore knowing how it all ends," viewer Jordyn Bruder says in an email. "JJ was the literal heart of OBX and he was the glue that held the Pogues together. There is no OBX without JJ."

Outer Banks Fan Reactions To JJ's Death

In which episode does JJ die?

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

JJ dies at the end of Outer Banks season 4 episode 10, "The Blue Crown" after rescuing Kiara from his father Chandler Groff. "I feel mad, betrayed, disappointed and heartbroken to say the least," Bruder adds. "JJ went through a lot of crap through the show and he was the one character who deserved his happy ending the most. When the series first came out, people fell in love with JJ and [Kiara]."

While the cast obviously found out about the ending while filming, fans are frustrated with how they chose to promote the show. "Obviously the cast can’t spoil a character death, but to blatantly lie and mislead fans by saying that Jiara was 'evergrowing' and fans would be happy with how the season plays out?" Bruder says. "Jiara fans deserved so much better than what we got, ESPECIALLY when they knew they were killing JJ off."

Why are Outer Banks fans so upset?

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

The show is the kind of phenomenon that made instant stars out of its cast, but it also made waves because of how the first season portrayed issues like classism, substance abuse, and domestic abuse. "As someone who has been around domestic abuse, I think the handling of the character JJ was detrimental culturally," another fan (who would like to remain anonymous) says. "The character suffered abuse at the hands of a man who was not even his biological father, and the writers almost framed it as if that was okay because in the beginning, his father loved him. Instead of telling a story to victims of abuse about hope and making it through trials, the writers went the opposite way. I also find it interesting that they stated this was a planned death. I think writing a character who is suffering from anxiety and clear mental health issues as well as abuse who is very young like JJ only to let him fall in love and kill him right when he starts to feel happiness doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense narratively."

Another viewer adds that ending JJ's story that way felt "disrespectful...especially when in an interview following the episode, one of the creators literally referred to his death as pointless." She even says "it feels almost like the show died along with him."

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Actress Madelyn Cline (Sarah Cameron) called JJ the "heart of Outer Banks"and for a lot of fans, JJ also became a beacon of hope, a reminder that you can endure, persevere, and come out stronger on the other side. Since the first season of the show dropped during April 2020, it's been one consistent, fun thing for TV fans since the COVID-19 pandemic began, which makes the loss feel even greater.

"Seeing him die at the hands of another abusive father was honestly kind of sickening," the viewer adds. "It’s also unfortunate that his death didn’t seem to mean anything. A character death like this would be one thing if it meant something. If he had died protecting his friends or actively protecting Kiara, rather than having already saved her and then getting killed afterward, it might’ve be easier to get past."

"It’s like a connection to something good and steady was just broken," X user @onlykiep4l says. "Killing a character that has literally gone trough so much trauma and was finally happy just doesn’t make sense. It’s not just the character that’s gone — it feels like a part of the show has ended too."

Why does JJ get killed off?

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Rumors have been circulating for years about behind-the-scenes drama between actors Rudy Pankow and Madison Bailey, which has fans believing Rudy asked to be written off the show(for the record, Outer Banks creators Josh & Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke have said it was the plan from the beginning). With Rudy's exit, the writers had a difficult choice in front of them. JJ isn't the kind of guy to abandon his friends, meaning the writers obviously felt like killing him was the only option. But according to an additional viewer, "Outer Banks hasn't been that type of show."

"To attempt to turn this fun, summer, boat show into some dark, depressing story where the heart of the show is gone destroys everything that the show started out as," she says.

Another anonymous fan calls the choice "a character assassination," adding other moments from the season that feel like a different character than the one fans have come to love: barely reacting to John B. and Sarah's pregnancy announcement, or to the fact Rafe had come to talk to Kiara — especially after his reaction to Rafe catcalling Kie in the first season is a moment that led fans to ship them in the first place.

The fan continues by calling JJ's treatment a "lack of respect" toward the character. "The fact that the writers tried to make us dislike him, to soften the blow of him dying. It didn’t work. It has everyone distraught because many people’s favorite character ended up dying after 'finding happiness' for about 10 minutes in Episode 10."

Does Sarah get pregnant in Outer Banks season 4?

But JJ's death isn't the only moment that has fans reeling. In addition to the fact viewers are saying the Pogues barely reacted to the death of their lifelong best friend, Pope is now a murderer and Kiara makes an absolutely chilling vow to get revenge on Groff — a far cry from the characters we fell in love with in season 1.

"Outside of the JJ of it all, a lot of plot lines/dynamics in part 2 felt off," one of our anonymous fans continues. "Sarah’s pregnancy plot line, especially when coupled with the quote from a creator about ‘giving her a baby specifically because she wasn’t ready’ feels incredibly tone deaf given the current state of things here in the US. The fact that there wasn’t even a conversation of if she wanted to continue with the pregnancy felt very icky. Overall, episodes 1-4 of this season did feel like Outer Banks, but everything after that felt like it was from an entirely different piece of media."

However, some fans are excited to see where the show goes from here. "JJ was such a strong character and his presence will obviously be missed, [but] I am excited to see how the Pogues react and what they do to get revenge on Groff," Virginia McGrew says in an email. "I also think that the scene of JJ dying with Kiara was extremely well done and emotional, making his passing even sadder. I ultimately believe that JJ’s passing serves as a reminder of the themes the show."

"JJ made the group even more aware of friendship, the importance of chosen family, and loyalty, which was seen throughout the season and especially in the finale," she continues. "Now that he is gone, the other Pogues will have to step up even more, creating a shift in their dynamic. While many believe that Outer Banks might not be worth watching after this finale, I truly think that it is only going to get even deeper and more interesting."

Outer Banks season 4 part 2 finally dropped November 7, and after theories were swirling around our favorite Pogues — is Sarah pregnant? Will JJ die? Will the group FINALLY get their hands on some treasure (and NOT lose it?) — we got the answers we'd been waiting for. And unfortunately, not all of them were answers we wanted. Sarah is indeed pregnant but the Pogues finally avenged Terrance, but in the final moments of the Outer Banks season 4 ending, we also lost JJ which is something I literally can't believe I'm writing. JJ and Kiara are the one couple fans latched onto (and that the cast and crew never saw coming) and to finally see them in a relationship only to lose JJ 10 episodes later? I'm heartbroken.

Creators Josh & Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke recently revealed Outer Banks season 5 will be "an epic fifth and final season," and there's one theory going around that makes that finale even more emotional. Here's everything you need to know aboutOuter Banksseason 5. Bring it on home John B.!

  • Outer Banks season 5 will be the last season of the hit Netflix show.
  • The series will follow Kiara and the Pogues getting revenge on Chander Groff for JJ's death.
  • Josh & Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke say "it will be our best [season] yet."

Is JJ really dead?

There are a few theories about how Outer Banks season 5 will handle JJ's death (aside from Kiara's chilling vow to get revenge, of course). Some fans have their fingers crossed the group will use the Blue Crown to wish him back to life, while others are holding onto hope he was simply unconscious. But there's one theory that stands out among the rest to me: JJ is really dead, and this whole time, John B.'s narration has been telling his unborn child about his namesake.

The show teased Sarah and John B. will name their baby JJ, and since Outer Banks is all about family, friendship, and spending time with one another, the reveal that all along, Outer Banks has been the story of the Pogues' adventures would literally be the perfect way to send them off. I'm literally crying just thinking about it.

Will there be a 5th Outer Banks?

Yes, we're getting a fifth and final season of Outer Banks coming to Netflix soon. While we don't have an official release date yet, we're expecting to see the last installment in 2025 or 2026.

In their official letter "to all Pogues," creators Josh & Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke explain how a photo of teenagers on a beach during a power outage inspired them to create the hit show we've all come to know and love. "From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship," they say in an official letter. "At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away."

"Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we're putting Season Four behind us and turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago," they continue. "Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you'll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break."

I can't wait to see Outer Banks season 5, and TBH five seasons will round out the show perfectly considering each season focuses on a different Pogue. That means season 5 will probably focus on Sarah alongside Kiara's revenge. 👀 Stay tuned for all the OBX5 info you need to know.
